- Today marks my 300th video upload. Which I am actually pretty proud of. Keeping this RUclips channel running has been a hard slog for these first two years.
In this weeks video I look at how long it takes to become a professional photographer in 2022

I woke up this morning to plan next months RUclips content and realised my next video would be my 300th upload! Thanks so much to everyone who has been supporting this channel. Be that from day one, or if you have just found me today. Have a great day !
Positive reality? A novel approach to RUclips. Subscribed and will keep watching.
To be honest, I kinda want to hear more about the council flat and struggle days. Throw in some bands and partying while you're at it. Just found this channel today. Looks good!
Hi there! Man i just discovered you and appreciate your videos. No BS no pitching SP and whatever else. I really appreciate it and straight talk is rare! All the best from Brazil!
Great advice that can be applied to most creative careers. You really are a truth teller, no fluff, no jargon, straight up quality 👌
Thanks
Another great video, Scott! Yep, ‘Jack of all trades’ is exactly how I was perceived for years which brought me years of fulfillment and some decent income. I was a working photog which is something I’ve wanted my whole life. It was okay, but I was stuck. This all changed after your May 2020 review of my work/website and your recommendation to specialize. Now my projects are fewer but vastly larger (think ‘licensing fees’) and, Bonus!, they’ll wait for ME to become available because I’m the ‘industrial/ men at work’ SPECIALIST. I would have never been in the running for the projects I’m working on now if I hadn’t reached out for your input. Thank you Scott. Thank you for starting this channel. Thank you for showing us that no matter how long one has been doing something there’s always more to learn. Thank you for telling us not just what you think we want to hear but also what we NEED to hear. Looking forward to the next 300!
So glad it was of use to you and has helped you progress!
'...but I digress...'
Trademark Scott. 💙
Ill get some merch knocked up with it haha
I wouldn't be to hard on yourself regards RUclips Scott! Ted is great but here's the crunch, what you say is insightful and more importantly, it's honest insightful and no B.S so more power to you! Happy 300
Awesome work man, 300 is not a small investment! Great quality videos, tons of inspiration, and just the right amount of truth Appreciate ya and really dig the channel content
Far out, for someone like me who 'shoots' in his work (journalist previously, marketing guy at a non-profit), is self-taught and flirts with the idea of going fulltime, these insights are very valuable.
Congratulations on sticking with it for 300 videos, that's a wonderful achievement. Thanks for the truth bombs you shared on this channel, they are severely needed in our industry!
I have no idea why your channel isn't far more popular. Both the technical and professional advice is gold and a lot of the latter crosses over to other fields.
Great video; some really solid honest advise on what to expect when you're starting out. Most RUclipsrs out there glorify everything and suggest that everything happens in no time but the truth is getting good at anything takes time and hard work. I'm into my third year shooting property photography and it's only now that things are picking up; jobs are getting bigger and more people are seeing what I'm doing. Much like you, I see work I did in my first year and wonder how I got paid! Even now, I'm picking up new skills and I'm hopeful that I'm heading in the right direction.
Looking forward to seeing video 301 :)
THIS IS SPARTA!
Top work lad
I like your honesty your on pointness and you over all advices thanks alot from dubai and Lebanon, I my self have the talent but lack on some funds and planning to do with what I got fir both satisfaction and side income
You're such an inspiration!
Didn’t realized it was 300 vidros, but I remember watching you for 3-4 years now. I think you had under 500 subscribers or something like that. Your input has always been valuable and I just love that you don’t sugar coat it like other photographers. I can’t wait for what the future holds for this channel.
This is crazy, I'm currently in Project Management. It's inspiring see the transition has been made. Appreciate you and your videos.
Your RUclips channel is great and I have watch many of your videos. Your success and rewards from this channel are very well deserved.
Thank you for those words...I have been struggling.
Those were my goals of covering all my bills but have slowed down posting on youtube. Thanks man I am always feeling ready to create when I see your videos bro! Keep it up!
Words I feel I needed to hear. Very encouraging, and congrats on the 300th video, Scott.
Glad it was helpful!
Timely for me. How this popped up on my feed, I don’t know. I was seriously thinking of quitting, but will reconsider. Thank you
If you still love taking photos, keep at it.
I do! And I will, thank you
This video just popped into my recommended and I'm glad it did. I've been shooting off and on for a few years now and this is my first real attempt to make a go of it. I'm hoping to work within the photojournalism space and took my first step by shooting a local parade. I only really like one shot I got, but I'm sure with time I'll find a few more worthwhile and add them to my portfolio. Thanks for the insight into your personal experience and hope all goes well in the future. Liked and subbed!
Zillion thanks for this video. I really appreciate it. Great advice
My pleasure!
This is great advice, I'm new to the channel but about 2-3 years into my photography career. I'm just getting to the point of getting "real" paid gigs but that imposter syndrome hits hard haha also please consider a discord for your RUclips masterclasses. Cheers
The imposter syndrome never goes. I’ll look into a discord at some point.
Really struggling with the imposter syndrome here too, only about 5 months into taking photography on as a career instead of a side hobby. For some of us it’s really tough not getting swallowed up by our own insecurities and perfectionism, especially when starting out. Also being an artist in other fields such as music etc I find sometimes can make it even more conflicting. So many questions about everything all the time. To stay mentally robust seems essential but it’s really challenging to maintain constantly especially if you don’t have much in the way of physical real life “mentor(s)” around to shine some light on the rocky path of starting out. Excuse the ramble but to be honest I have been feeling a little defeated lately. Non the less I send out my heartfelt compassion to all of those who can relate.
P.S. These videos are awesome. There were a few shots in particular I would love to be able to find online someday (I.e. black and white band/group shot with the flying beer/water etc.)
We are sparta!!! Nr 300 ! Cheers. Your advice keeps me on track and my mindset checked in for the long journey ahead of me! Thanks a lot.
Nice insight, I enjoyed this video.
Congrats on the 300 videos mark! And huge thank you for putting so much interesting and constructive content out there for professional photographers. This is awesome 🔥
Great video; smart and to the point. I just discovered you, and I’m a big fan.
Welcome aboard!
People look at this profession and only see the results, those of us who do it know the everyday grind it takes. One needs to be interested in or curious about Art, Food, Wine, Spirits, Fashion and any other subject that might influence your work. If nothing else, learning about those subjects will make you a more interesting person.
So true.
"MrJohnny Big Balls". It was worth watching just for that statement alone. I have absolutely loved your vids. They dont get any real as you tell it. If I ever did go on the the tube(which will probably be never, because I would be cursing and just being a C...T), It would be in your style of vid. You're telling it as it is. Im at the point where I have to make that leap. Not a leap of faith. Not even a leap of hope. But a leap into the world of photography and growing a skin to be thick enough to take all the bad stuff but believe in my work and know that I can create it again, again and again(little Rankin quote there). Johnny Big Balls..... Here I come. Chat you in 10 years.
Look forward to your next video.
Great work Scott! 300 videos is no small thing! 👌
Congrats on your 300th video! That’s a big number! :) I remember how excited I was about my 100th video 😂
My channel has had to take a backseat at the moment (like you said sometimes something has to give and it is RUclips when I don’t have time)
Well done on the milestone of 300, a lot of hard work. Enjoyed this one hearing your perspective 😀
Thanks so much! 😊 Hope you are keeping well Brett
Good job mate!
4 years in, I've had one solid client whose booked 4 shoots with me this year for 90% of my income but I am really struggling to find more high paying clients like them. I thought this was the year that I would be living off just my photo income but that has not been the case. I struggle with earning money now while continuing to market my niche to the my target for my future.
Keep plugging away. It will come
Great job on the 300th video. Pass video from u is still amazing learnt a lot, this one inspired me to keep going as I’m also being too serious on work and not fun at all in the room. Beginner here Trying to keep up on food photography too, it’s hard to being solo to start up… not sure if I could have some advice? Not sure if u could review my portfolio?
thank you!
My biggest motivation aside from my children, are the people that doubt my ability to be successful doing this and actually enjoying what I do for a living for once. 💪
About 300 years, most people just want to take pictures with their phones these days.
I'm also a can't!
That’s really funny, because I prefer your videos over Teds…
