    I am Iranian. I wish all the best for my Turkish brothers. Unfortunately these days the relation between Iran and Turkey is not in good mood but at the same time we have very great commercial relation with each other. This relation is very especial. Iran and Turkey had wars for 3 centuries but during last 150 years every thing was calm and their border is one of the oldest borders in the world.

      The regional powers in that area always have been and will continue to be Anatolia, Persia and Egypt. Everyone else is a flash in the pan. How power and influence distribute themselves among Turkey, Iran and Egypt, and whether or not these polities can get past their ethnic, historical and sectarian differences will determine whether or not the region as a whole blossoms or withers.

    I really want to get started on history with this kind of stuff.
    I just don't know where to start my studies.
    My grandfather was a student of history, but sadly he passed away this summer and he was too old for him to teach me anything.
    He had a lot of articles and notes he made, but sadly they get distributed among family members which prevents me from looking into them easily.
    He also had a library of over 7000 books, Encyclopedias and history books, most of which are hard to come by these days.
    I'm really sad and wish i could continue my grandfathers work, he had much knowledge and he was a very wise man.

    Turkey has started to grow up after the election handled in 2002. There were heaps of to do things was not solved before that. pkk was just one of that problems and Turkey almost sort that out, additionally Turkey sort out most of the other problems such as the rights of ethnics and scarf ban in Education and public institutions. During last 5 years, Turkey playing a great game against Israel, USA, England (inc all Europe), Iran and Russia. Turkey realized that this is the only way being the most powerful country in the middle east.
    If you guys look objective and check the history of the Turks, you can easily see that Turks have this power and just woken up from a sleep taken almost 100 years. And if you look without blinkers, you will notice how big changes held on during last 12 years then, you can predict where this country will be in next 10-15 years.

    from what I absorbed from reading lots of Turkeys politics culture history etc.. is that Turkey is starting to move away from the west not only that they even wanted to become part of the shangai organization!
    what does this mean for Turkey will they ever achieve the goal of the shangai wil russia china ever allow them to be part of that? will turkey ever leave NATO? and what if turkey really achieves that goal of becomming part of the shangai organisation what could happen to europe/usa?

    • @CaspianReport
      @CaspianReport  10 лет назад +17

      DeadManRising Turkey is not abandoning the West, those ties are irreplaceable. Ankara is just getting closer to its historical Eastern neighbors. Thus you could say Turkey is moving not to the East or West but to the Middle.

    (1)Ex-Sunni Muslim Imam, Turan Dursun, was savagely killed in Turkey after numerous fatwas from countless clerics to have him killed for insulting Islam.
    (2) Jewish and Christian groups have had to fight increasing pressure to study Islamic religious texts in public schools
    I would not say that in a society where ex-Muslims are killed can be called secular-leaning by any stretch of the imagination.
    I would say that a government that forces Jewish kids to read the Quran in school is an Islamist government but who am I to not hold their hand and pretend they are reforming.
    4:35 you claim that surrounding Muslim nations will follow Turkey's example of secularism? Have you watched the news lately? There is a huge Islamic Caliphate state next door to Turkey now!!! Secularism is NOT spreading, its fading away.
    Your job is to convince everyone in the English speaking world that the Middle East is reforming, enlightening and coming to terms with modernity.
    Shame on you......dont use you education to promote a pan-Islamic agenda- people are dying. Time to be an atheist and help your people instead of hold them back. Azerbani-Love

    This may be a hard question to answer, however, do you think that Turkey is changing due to social pressures from Europe and the Anglosphere? If so, could the dualities you describe perhaps be the result of this, i.e. the German idealism that has heavily influenced the Western world.

    Very interesting. I shall read, time permitting. Turkey is stuck between two diametrically opposed personalities and identities. My Turkish friends in America mostly left because of this slow painful return to Islamism. If Turkey continues a path toward Islamism I can assure that there will be a brain drain to the west as the secular intellectuals who don't pray 5 times a day pack their bags and seek better ideologies.
    One Turkish Engineer I know cited the arrest of Fizal Say in 2012 as the last straw. He said that Attaturk's effort to modernize was going to slowly be overshadowed.

    What are you actually trying to say when between 1:32 and 1:37 you said "And as Turkey is now slowly awakening from its ninety years long political comma"?. I would appreciate a detailed perspective on this, because this is a very strong statement that requires a very deep and extensive arsenal of knowledge to make such a statement. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not questioning your knowledge nor your integrity concerning this such matter, I just want to know what you base your statement on.

    • @carpediemdeii
      @carpediemdeii 9 лет назад +2

      bugder Im Turkish and I would like to detailed that state. With strong power and the caliphate Ottoman Empire became the leader of the whole muslims. For centuries 'Turk' was equal to muslim, in Europe. Even in our worst and weakest times which are 1800 to 1900 all muslim world are respect and follow us and Ottoman Empire was everywhere in the world except sub-saharan africa and americas. For example we sent aid to Ireland we opened consulates in China India Indonesia we tried to took care of the muslims. We were not responsible to only our country we were responsible to all muslims. Also muslim people were helping to us. For example Pakistan people helped us in our Independence War. But with the republic and abolition of caliphate and secularization and nationalization putted us that 'comma'. This is the shortest way to explain it. Today again we are everywhere in Egypt in Syria in Palestine in Asia in Balkans in Somalia in Africa in South America. Im suggesting that you people should take a look TİKA Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency and what are they doing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_International_Cooperation_and_Development_Agency

      carpediemdeii Although there is some truth in your statement it is quite biased and inadequate. The Ottomans lost power due to its uncontrolled expansion and the corruption within its ranks. Its refusal to adapt to the changing world and its inadequacy in handling foreign affairs aided its fall.
      Your statement is much more in line with propaganda instead of pure history.

    • @bugder
      @bugder 9 лет назад +1

      carpediemdeii First of all learn how to write in English properly, secondly you are too simple and lack any intelligence. Swearing just shows how much lacking your intelligence is and how much of a real imbecile you are. What are you trying say by "comma" ? As far as I know a "comma" is a punctuation rule. carloa877 Right now the Iranians, the Turks and the Saudis are competing for a new balance of power. Each country is spreading its own version of Islam, governance and ideology. In general, Saudi Arabia and Iran have larger financial and hard-power resources. Turkey, on the other hand, has better soft-power, diplomatic and military resources.

    As a non-Muslim American looking at the Near & Middle East, I have never been impressed with Turkey. While they have a good geographical position, and are not the type of people you want to get into bar fights with, they simply have too many internal problems to deal with. Perhaps this is what makes them so passive and cautious in foreign policy, or any policy , really. The Kurdish tribes are much more aggressive and willing to give their lives in battle. The Turkish military seems to be some kind of jobs program more than a sword to wield when necessary.
    Just as the Chinese tend to succeed in every country they go to live in, and the Russians do better than their neighbors with their limited resources (the Russian thugs economy is about the size of Italy), so I would bet on the Iranians to dominate much of the Middle East way before I would bet on Turkey. It's really a matter of national character.

    • @DaniyalZeX7
      @DaniyalZeX7 10 лет назад +25

      ***** Not true. im a kurd and ive lived in Iran and Turkey. In turkey most kurds were killed for saying they were a kurd or speaking Kurdish and in School Kurdish is not allowed to be spoken. In Iran Kurds are not very good at speaking Persian and some dont even need to learn Persian since it is more populated by Kurds. And in kurdish-iran kurds speak Kurdish not Persian. And kurds were and are treated as second class citizens in Turkey.

    Excellent book review and I agree w your last analysis of what this book lacks. Maybe a few twitter notes to #cagaptay will encourage him to discuss Erdogan, the government and the repression of the more liberated Turks. I look forward to reading it, but it is overpriced on Amazon for such a short book that isn't quite up to current conditions in Turkey. I'll order a used copy, reasonably priced. Erdogan's resistance to helping the Kurds against ISIS in Syria is sad but I understand they are having to handle most the refugees alone and are only asking for a no-fly zone. The Kurds have large populations in close proximity to one another in four adjoining countries~it seems they should have their own state. I want to learn more about them. Do you suggest any books on Kurdish History? Also, what is Erdogan's beef with Assad? Maybe you should write your own book as your reports are very interesting, and bring many otherwise unknown things to light.

      have fun with our f-16, bankrupting inept greek.
      our closest enemy is Iran, but we are stronger than them too;
      The website Global Firepower offers an extensive comparison of the militaries of these two countries: World Military Strength Comparison
      "Though their armies are similar in size, Turkey holds a significant advantage in total aircraft (1639 vs 992), helicopters (629 vs 232) and armored vehicles (8532 vs 1550). Turkey's annual defense budget is also nearly three times as great ($18 billion vs $6 billion). This reflects the much more advanced weaponry that Turkey receives from their NATO allies as opposed to Iran's aging hardware.
      If there were to be a war along their shared border, it would not be an easy fight. Likely, there would not be an outright victor, since neither would be willing to sustain such high casualties. In a hypothetical all-out war, however, Turkey's advanced weaponry (particularly in the air) should prevail.
      Turkey's advanced fleet of F-16s would quickly gain air superiority

      Iran has struggled to find parts to keep its aging fighters (an F-5 shown here) in the air. Described here: medium.com/war-is-boring/4a26263947ca

      Ali Budak Don't show me global fire power ranks , are inaccurate about Hellenic Army , the site itself have agreed to that, also What Advanched F-16 Fleet? What Airsupperioty? Our F-16 are upragding to AESA and we have also F-16 Block 52+ ( The best F-16 in the world) We have Mirage that can shoot Exocet. Your closest enemy is Russia , Greece , Armenia , Cyprus , Israel , Kurdistan , Syria and Iraq Actually , you have been encircled by 2 Meditterean Super Powers Greece & Israel , an world Power (Orthodox) Russia and 7 Minor but strong forces . You have no hope even against Greece , how can u match so many forces? Your airforce also is nothing , as it can't operate in Aegean cuz A/A Greek Shield is able to even Lock Ankara with its missiles , by the way Turkey now doesnt have any A/A shield . Hellenic AF have the best Pilots in NATO , Turkish General when was spectulating the exercise of PARMENION 2014 , asked the Greek Defence Minister , '' How can they have 100% Accuracy on the enemy positions with 2 weeks of prepaparation only?!! . Yesterday , i show that Turkish ''Economy'' is at collapse , you are in worst position again against Greece , as you dont have any serius logistics to stand or to confront Greece that its stockpiles are heavily fullified to last an very long war.

    Yoldash you can not manipulate history for defending pan turkism - because you have to be realistic about war between Osmani empire and Safavids ( Azerbaijani people) - Safavids raised as a shia Islam and formed the country of Iran 500 years ago - Today republic Azerbaijan is a banan republic dominated by Turkish raising empire - Reason is clear Azaris are shia and pan turkism destroyed all shia mosques in Republic azerbaijan and build 100s of sunni muslem mosque in Shia azeri country - and same time under Karabaq conflict turkey was totally passive with invaider Armaniansso please stop became house animal for pan turkism - and save Azeris culture and land!

    It is about time the Kurds had their own nation.

    • @Ali-wl6pm
      @Ali-wl6pm 9 лет назад +5

      So? They could fuck off from Turkish lands and can build their own nation.
      There are 5 million Turks in Germany, is it about the time that German Turks have their own country too?

    • @MrJarth
      @MrJarth 9 лет назад +1

      Ali Budak no, they can go back to turkey.
      kurdish lands aren't turkish, the kurds are the native people of the region.

    • @MrJarth
      @MrJarth 9 лет назад +2

      Ali Budak The Germans decide, it is their country.
      Well yeah, you can say the same about America as you can about Turkey, should the Turkish get out of Byzantium and go back to Turkmenistan?
      No, because they both conquered it centuries ago and both have their own people living there.
      Yes but the people there are not Turkish, they are Kurds, it is already a kurdish country and land they just don't have a government yet.
      Why fight a war for lands that don't belong to your people? Why not just let the Kurdish rule themselves.

    • @Ali-wl6pm
      @Ali-wl6pm 9 лет назад +1

      MrJarth Why Germans decide? Why? They are migrated, they conquered those lands just as we.
      No we don't go back to Turkmenistan because we conquered Anatolia.
      No USA don't go back to Britain because they conquered the Americas.
      Whether people are Turkish or not, those lands are Turkish. You don't care who is living in, when you assigning a government.
      In Berlin, there is a place called Kreuzberg, includes many Turks and few Germans. Even the street signs are Turkish, there are Turkish restaurants and plazas everywhere. But Kreuzberg belongs to Germany, not the Turks who live in Kreuzberg.
      Belonging is a matter of government not the people. If Kurds want to establish a government, they can freely go to Iraq or Syria or what the hell they want to live.
      Do you think those lands have been given to us free? No. We fought and conquered.
      When Germans give Kreuzberg to Turks (which is ridicilous), when Americans give Americas to the native american, when French give some land to Algerians in France, when half of London given to immigrants who is non British, I will give my land to Kurds. Okay?

    • @MrJarth
      @MrJarth 9 лет назад +1

      Ali Budak Because the Germans are the native people and they own their country.
      German conquered the land from who? Neanderthals?
      HA no they can't Iraq or Syria won't let that happen :)
      Also they are conveniently under the control of ISIS. I wonder who benefits from that? hmmm
      What you asking for is a full rebellious war then with so they can brake away.
      There is no other Kurdish country they can go and live in, like the Turks who are living in Germany. All these other groups have their own country, the Kurds don't.
      You continue the conflict by not allowing them to rule themselves.
      The Armenians rule themselves, they are not Turkish or even Islamic.
      If you took over their country there would be only conflict.
      So there is no point to rule over them.
