While many focus on the Development Road as just a transport link, it's actually much more. Yes, the initial $17 billion covers the port, roads, and railway, with companies like Daewoo Engineering and Construction involved, but the true scope goes beyond that. This project is designed to revolutionize Iraq's economy. It's about building new electricity grids, logistics hubs, and entire industrial cities along the route. By 2040, it aims to position Iraq as a key trade hub, creating jobs, boosting industries, and driving long-term economic growth-not just improving transportation.

A regime change in Iran would affect Iraq the most in the region as it would take off the grip that Iran has on any development in Iraq, Iran thinks of Iraq as a bank that it uses to dodge sanctions and get US dollars and it's an important passage to their allies in Syria, in Iran's prospective Iraq is probably the only country that it can't afford to lose.

It's hard to imagine why anyone would decide to use this for the purpose of transporting goods from Asia to Europe. Trains and trucks just can't compete with container ships in terms of efficiency for longer trips, so its preferable to minimise their use. The prospect of saving a handful of days is pretty irrelevant in most supply chains and anything that needs to get somewhere fast will fly there.
"The prospect of saving a handful of days is pretty irrelevant" It is not. That is billions upon billions of USD we are talking about. Halting the Suez canal caused 9 billion USD worth of economic damage every single day.
@justsefa1843 Those billions are ofset by the cost of offloading ships, loading trucks and paying people to drive. Meanwhile just having the ships go through the canal is cheaper.
@@RK-cj4oc You have the cost of offloading ships anyways. If I want to send goods to Turkey from let's say Bangladesh, would it really be cheaper, if I take extra days to navigate around Suez? That is the question here. I dont think the people that made the project ignored the most basic question: How much profit can be made? If you want to send goods from the US to Europe, duh the port plays no role at all, but the targetted market is asia/south asia. I am not convinced that this is a useless and profitless project. Not to mention that saving days for a small cost increase is still much much more profitable than saving some money but increasing your delivery by days.
@@justsefa1843 Those were the costs of delays and the piling up backlogs and bottlenecks caused by the delays. A thing that needs to be somewhere on day X is ordered well in advance so that it will be where it needs to be on the said day. as a Highway/Transport Engineer from Iraq, this project (on paper) is probably the best thing that would happen to Iraq since the Medieval golden age... this corridor is one of the reasons the British colonized Iraq, they tried to establish a route from their other colony in India to UK through Iraq, this corridor was famously known as "the orient express" however it is hard to be optimistic - Iraq is still extremely weak politically, and almost all countries involved, have interests, or competing with Iraq, can take advantage of this project on the behest of Iraq (Turkey for example who is the key partner, made some very difficult demands in exchange of their partnership, even though they would benefit from it too, which Iraq had to accept because very few countries are willing to partner with Iraq in better terms due to this political weakness) as well as many foreign interferences in the government - corruption is also extreme in Iraq, with almost all projects end up only on paper and their entire budgets disappear, not to mention Iraq does not have sorverienty in its economy since US and UK took over the oil fields and ALL of Iraq's income goes to US banks as a hostage.. and US controls the Iraqi money that Iraq can get based on the government performance if it is beneficial or not to the empire. - you perfectly mentioned why Iran don't want this to happen and it is 100% accurate, but failed to mention (as expected) why the US will also not allow it to happen, you briefly mentioned how the US and EU threw massive cheers for India- middle east because it involves both Saudi Arabia and their colony Israel, so it is purely about geo politics. The US had already began massive propaganda campaigns against the Faw port project because it involves China, and they successfully halted the project for few years, and they also threatens Iraq regularly to cut our oil money if Iraq doesn't comply to the US. - also, a lack of engineering expertise can turn this project into harm more than good with poor engineering judgment, even the most prestigious international engineering firms could very well perform poorly due to lack of any engineering standards and regulations, as well as corruption, corporations will want to maximize the profits first and foremost But there's nothing I wish more in my life from all my heart more than we can overcome these challenges, and see this project through to life as intended

All politicians are thieves and corrupt, we have seen many promises from them over the past 18 years, such as uninterrupted electricity, building the tallest tower in the world, high-speed internet, all of these projects and deals are stolen in the end, even the simplest ones like building flat roads for driving
A country that can't even secure its borders and aviation wants to become the main road to the Middle East. Funny.
The Iraqi citizens face very big problems such as unemployment, extreme heat and power outages.Unbreathable atmosphere and undriveable roads A big dream like the one in the video is a big leap for the necessities of life.
😂😂😂 I know how it is, as a Balkan guy. Here also everything looks good, but it is not 😂
I sure wish it works out well. The main obstacle to this project is Iran. They'll fiercely oppose any project that risks weakening their hold on Iraq.
If the Iranians rebel and can overthrow the Ayatollah and the rest of his fanatics then Iran would most likely start to support this.
@@stevewright9779 It doesn't work like this. The IRGC is very strong and they are bloody fanatics. The armed forces are not a factor. Israel doesn't want stability in the region either.
@@stevewright9779It's not a matter of regime but rather interests, Iran under the Shah was more open in its harassment of Iraq with taking lands forcefully from Iraq and destabilizing it. A different regime wouldn't change the goals since each regime thinks of its country's interests first.
I really hope this will work put for Iraq it really needs to see a light at the end of the tunel after 2 decades of bas economy and wars.

The idea behind kuwaits new port, which was introduced some 15 years ago when Iraq was at its weakest, is to landlock Iraq on its 58km2 coastline by building new port close to Iraq's coastline in order to connect it with Iraq via railway. So not only to landlock Iraq, but to to have finanicial and political influence over Iraq and to prohibit any attempt to build new port in the tight area by Iraq
Some years ago it was leaked that previous decision-makers in Iraq received bribe from Kuwait in order to approve railway connection but luckily the approval never procceed although they received the bribe.

Plus, it's not long til the northwest passage and arctic ocean become navigable making shorter/faster/safer routes around Canada a competitor
"The prospect of saving a handful of days is pretty irrelevant"
It is not.
It doesn't matter how much time the thing spends sitting on a container ship as long as it arrives when it's supposed to arrive and this is the problem that this project suffers from.

Another Fantastic EcoGeo / Political analysis. Thanks.
No roads can overcome corruption, you just get expensive tolled roads.
But if the cost savings or benefits outweigh the tolls and the corruption the roads can pay for themselves.
That’s why a nation needs a proper military and rule of law to prevent it. But Iraq can’t even stand on 2 legs anymore, all these dictatorships with failed states under them trying to do mega projects like as if they are as developed as the West is what makes them always fail
@@meilinchan7314 A road running through Iraq from sea to Turkey already exists. I'm not sure what cost savings or benefits exist by building another road.
Maybe a railroad would be a better option?
@@luddity This includes a railroad. It's a corridor for both trucks and trains.
Sag ol, Shirrvan! It was very interesting!
as a Highway/Transport Engineer from Iraq, this project (on paper) is probably the best thing that would happen to Iraq since the Medieval golden age... this corridor is one of the reasons the British colonized Iraq, they tried to establish a route from their other colony in India to UK through Iraq, this corridor was famously known as "the orient express"
however it is hard to be optimistic
- Iraq is still extremely weak politically, and almost all countries involved, have interests, or competing with Iraq, can take advantage of this project on the behest of Iraq (Turkey for example who is the key partner, made some very difficult demands in exchange of their partnership, even though they would benefit from it too, which Iraq had to accept because very few countries are willing to partner with Iraq in better terms due to this political weakness) as well as many foreign interferences in the government
- corruption is also extreme in Iraq, with almost all projects end up only on paper and their entire budgets disappear, not to mention Iraq does not have sorverienty in its economy since US and UK took over the oil fields and ALL of Iraq's income goes to US banks as a hostage.. and US controls the Iraqi money that Iraq can get based on the government performance if it is beneficial or not to the empire.
- also, a lack of engineering expertise can turn this project into harm more than good with poor engineering judgment, even the most prestigious international engineering firms could very well perform poorly due to lack of any engineering standards and regulations, as well as corruption, corporations will want to maximize the profits first and foremost
But there's nothing I wish more in my life from all my heart more than we can overcome these challenges, and see this project through to life as intended
Shirvan, I continue to be impressed by your research and appreciate the alternative, non-Western-centric viewpoint of Western Asia - I learn something interesting every episode. Thanks for your stellar work.
