Worked out well. I was interested to see how you would chuck it up. Drilling it like you did made me nervous, given that the piece was only lightly supported. A lower speed might be a bit safer. I've often thought about doing a video on adding tang substitutes/extensions to Morse tapers, as I'm sure a lot of folk are oblivious as to how easy it is to do. Good video. Cheers Rob
Thanks Rob, The thick copper jaw guards really helped keep the two hardened surfaces from slipping against each other and I had it really cranked in tightly in the chuck. I applied the pressure from the tail stock very slowly until the center drill got a good start. Boy was that a hard piece of hardened steel. The cheap center that I modified with my friend Ted was a piece of cake in comparison.
I took this fella under my wing a couple of years ago when he was having issues with school. He is so talented with his hands and is a natural craftsman to be.

Hi Fred,
I was thinking about this and maybe you could keep it safely centred with a fixed steady, provided there's room for it ?
Cheers Rob
That's a wonderful thing when a a journeyman shares his knowledge with the less experienced. Kudos to you Fred! Tc, Mike
