- The point of a spin-off is to borrow the success of an established main series in order to launch something new and different. Sometimes though that new and different spin-off proves to be even better and more popular than the series that originated it. Behold these seven spin-off games that were even better than the original and return every Thursday, why not, for more list videos like this one!

This should have been posted by Outside Xtra as a meta joke.
I did wonder if that was what the first joke was gonna be but they went with non-union Mexican equivalent dog "food" instead.
7 Spinoff RUclips Channels that were better than the Original.
@@Th3BlackLotus you mean better than Inside Xbox? Right?
Wouldn't apply. This channel is still better for now.
@@GrimDMasterMind That is the significant criteria. The spin-off has to be better. Xtra is on an equal footing.
Now oxventure is the far superior content, but as that is not on a separate channel it probably doesn't count as a spin-off.
Edit (11 months later): Oxventure now has its own channel and definitely counts as a spin-off that is even better.

I'm so happy, I missed the chair so much
Same here !!
Its photoshopped

They both look and sound much better in the chair!
Poor Mike, can't claim barn cars, had his swords taken away, can't store his car in the overhead storage on an airplane. He's got it rough.
How dare you! Mike’s beloved car rides in the seat next to him!
Well see... barn finds are something you can sort of claim... you just have to find who the actual owner is and buy it (usually rather cheap)
I remember that you could link your copy of The Sims to Simcity 4, or it detected the installed copy, so that you could have your Sims live in the city you built. Didn't do much overall, but it was a nice crossover.
There was also "Sim Copter", a flying game where you could use your city as a location.
IIRC you could use sim city 4 to design new neighborhoods
@@smarkley2117 In The Sims 2.
@@coyoteone6197 Indeed, and also Streets of SimCity where you could race in the cities you created in SimCity 2000.
I would LOVE a gimmick like that now!
Imagine if Sims 4 took place in a City Skylines you made!?
There are a couple of spin-offs from Nintendo's 1981 Arcade Game "Donkey Kong" which are worth mentioning as well. Jumpman has done all right for himself.
What an understatement! Indeed.
The big ape’s had a few, too, I suppose.
Yeah... like Donkey Kong Jr. Math.
Nintendo claims Mario is not Jumpman, due to the events of Donkey Kong 2. Which basically has Jumpman as the villain in that one.
@@williamfalls Yeah, well... they sort of also treat it as canon that he IS....
@@marhawkman303 I say that he is, but Nintendo wants to just bury DK2 and would rather people not associated Mario as the cruel zookeeper. Like they said in an interview before the release of a remastered Donkey Kong with Mario taking the place as Jumpman that "Mario is based off of Jumpman, so it is only fitting." And canonically, Mario met the brunette in the DK remake and not the original DK game... The lady in that was different.
"Give us the Sims 5, EA. Were ready."
Mike is one of us. He knows. Only someone in the know could say those words with such fatuige.
While they're at it, they could make a new SimCity game that doesn't suck.
Honestly, I've never ever had any interest in playing the Sims, and when he said The Sims 4 came out in 2014 even I felt that.
Pretty sure The Sims releases are just to update the games base/graphics engine. Most new mechanics and content are added in the expansion packs. Problem is the Expansion packs are becoming more piecemeal per generation and they are approaching the cost of a new release game.
@@roax206 Sims 3 still felt like a game, with objectives and immersion and fail states. Meaningful choices. No number of expansion packs has added to that in 4, unfortunately.
@@roax206 This was true up till 4. You can even see that a lot of animations and such are the same between 2 and 3 (with some being toned down as the ESRB cared more about sexual content type things and anything suggestive). Sims 4 however is different. They tossed the old stuff and built it from the ground up again. I have a feeling that that's what they're doing with 5 as well (and we're probably at least a couple years off from a Sims 5 release) especially considering the rumors that they're going to add a multiplayer aspect to it.
As someone who's been an avid Sims fan (I've played all iterations of the game when they were relevant or close to it) I'm personally gonna hafta see a big change with 5 to consider getting it. It's very much been downhill with every iteration of the franchise and I don't really see that changing when 5 comes out unless they *really* start listening to fans.
If this gets a commenter edition, is that a spinoff of this series?
my god, you're a genius
nah I think that is technically a DLC :D
commenter ed would be a sequel. OutsideXtra would be the spin off...
@@mattyt1961 well, only if you have premium. Otherwise, you can't download it.
I'm pretty convinced that a commenter edition would be more of a mod.
Oh wow the nostalgia of that sims 1 intro. Back then sims didn't age, so really you had no choice but to drown them to end the endless repetition of their mundane existance. Constantly getting stuck. Living off grilled cheese sandwitches. Job going nowhere. Really, I did them a service!
I've been at that point in life, except for the not ageing. I'm glad no one drowned me. 😅
Just like life itself
It was also comically easy to set something on fire, and for some sim to die that way. I remember a hot tub catching fire and a neighbour sim dying
I remember the first time I removed all the ways to get food from my sims home, then put it in fast forward. I could not play the game again for almost a year.
Just hearing the music made me want to go find my copy.

I actually shouted when I saw Rune Factory on this list. One of my favorite game series of all time, and one that never gets enough press.
For real! Rune factory is so incredible and every game is so charming they don’t get enough credit
Flip yes! Rune Factory is amazing ♥
Rune Factory 5 is on its way!
I love all the Rune Factory games! I miss breaking the first three games and exploiting bad ideas for fun and profit. Remember when dungeons had like 20 mine spots a room that respawned when you leave/entered the cave? Goooooood times.

So history factoid Digital Devil stories: Megami Tensei, the first of the series, is based of a novel of the same name, so Shin Megami Tensei is technically a spinoff of that and that would make Persona a spinoff of a spinoff, and the Persona spinoffs, spinoffs of a spinoff of a spinoff, confused yet?
You won't be, on this episode of Soap!
...too obscure?
Well, we can go even deeper as the Persona series is a spinoff of Shin Megami Tensei: if, which is a spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series, so the Persona series is technically a spinoff of a spinoff of a spinoff who's spinoff series are spinoffs of a spinoff of a spinoff of a spinoff, and if people aren't confused yet, then congratulations, you might be one of few.
Spin-ception
You spinoff round round baby right round, like a Devil baby, right round round round
No go back, adaptation to another media.
Man, I got a heavy hit of nostalgia from seeing the Sims 1 intro sequence again
My nostalgia moment was the original SimCity. Didn't really like SimCity 2000.
That opening music, I found this channel right after my dad died 2 years ago.. I was in a horrible place and very scared. It's 2 years later, I still love this channel and it helped me get through the last couple hard years. Now I own his home, I own my own car, I don't drink anymore, and I make $17 an hour. I think you would be proud, and I live in his honor. Hearing this opening music brought flashes of the dark days. Kind of crazy

The Nier games are a step up from the Drakengard series.

Came to the comments for this! One trophy left to platinum NieR Replicant and It'll join OG NieR and Automata. The novels and world guides are great too.
I always thought Nier was more a sequel series than a spin-off.
Good old Soul Reaver: started as an unrelated project, became a spinoff for Blood Omen and then with the sequel became the main plot of the series instead.
Mike: Ahh, the Year 2000. The defeat of the Millennium Y2K Bug in a spectacular armored mech battle was just one of that year's many blessings.

Agreed, I missed the chair and withe background so much, I don't know why I find it so appealing.
Back and already set the kitchen on fire.
Unreal Tournament 2003 was the first real shooting game I ever played. I got the demo from a PC magazine at the age of 12. Such fond memories :')
Can Red Alert be considered a spinoff for this list? Command and Conquer is good and all (debatably up to 3) but the Red Alerts are probably more fondly remembered -- even by the OX team concerning a certain Tim Curry scene.
I'm going to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism.... SPACE!!!
i can agree, red alert was definitely more popular in my house then c&c, ea kind of shit the bed after generals zero hour though
@@trankia1224 What he didn't think about in that monologue is that he's bringing it with him. :p
@@marhawkman303 How so? He was a communist not a capitalist. Red Alert's Russia is futuristic version of the U.S.S.R Russia.
Isn't Red Alert a prequel to the C&C series? A spin off is a game that takes place in the same universe but completely separate from the series' narrative. That's why the Sims, Judgment, and Forza Horizon is on here.
I'll be both surprised and unsurprised if Mario Kart or Mario Party aren't on this list.
Honestly shout out to Luigi's Mansion too.
*drunkenly toasts to miyamoto*
Funny thing is that 'Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters' was a weirdly good book - not as funny as PPZ, but more imaginative and thought out.
I'm surprised it didn't seem to go beyond those two. I had good money on "Emma But She's A Vampire" coming out at some point.
Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter was way better than it should have been.
Another example like The Sims where a spinoff becomes wildly more successful than the original is Bloons Tower Defense. It has three times as many installments than the the original series, Bloons.
@@ShinyGG yeah I played the TD version once long ago and didn't even know there was a game series
Man I love rune factory and I'm so happy it's getting more love
No mention of the biggest spinoffs of all time, Counter-Strike and Team Fortress? CS:GO is still one of the top 3 most popular games on Steam after 9 years, and Team Fortresss 2 is still in the Steam top 10 after 12 years. CS was a spinoff of Half-Life, and TF was a spinoff of Quake, which itself was another hugely popular game that was a semi-spinoff of Doom/Wolfenstein.
To be fair CS and TF were fan mods, not official spin-offs (originally).
Games that started out as mods could be its own list, though. DOTA, that Skyrim one…

Anybody remember SimFarm or SimCopter? They were my favourites after simcity
@@SineN0mine3 Sim-life was just a sandbox to toy with. I made my own goals to achieve... and sometimes failed horribly :/ Like how one ecosystem ended up covered by a plant named "Kudzu" and the animal life was at least 90% "Dragon"s. Worst ecosystem balance ever!!!!
The gist of THAT debacle was that Kudzu could live nearly anywhere. It's not the BEST... at anything, but it doesn't suck at anything. Ocean, plains, mountains... all the places. Except the super-dry ones I think? Hard to remember since it was 20 years ago.
Dragons... were just a large lifeform that could go nearly anywhere and eat almost anything. But they ate a lot, and the main thing they didn't eat out of existence was Kudzu. Hard to be sure WHY that was... maybe I setup stats for Kudzu that made it grow into a large tree or something? I dunno. Like I said... 20 years.
"Give us the Sims 5, EA, we are ready!" Lol, Mike knows exactly what's going on in the Sims community xD
Only for some. There's an even split of those who think they're going the right way trying to fix what they have. Honestly they need some competition to give them some ideas where to push the game before they even think about sims 6
@@meikahidenori yeah in the age of unlimited paid DLC potential... why make a new game? the devs of Star Trek Online have been asked that and their response was that it'd cost too much to be worth rebuilding everything from scratch. Practically anything you could do in a sequel game can be tacked onto the original as DLC, so.,.. why bother making a sequel?
@@marhawkman303 oh i dunno. Sims 3 was worse with it's dlc. At least in that dlc though was stuff that didn't fit into normal packs like the steampunk and until into the future, the futuristic stuff. I wouldn't mind kits if they actually gave us the stuff the realistic playing simmers don't want. If anything the strive to make it a realistic simulation is what is causing it to stagnate....the creative fun stuff is missing.
Who's desperate for them to upgrade the graphics while simultaneously ripping content out of the game to be sold back later?
this makes me think there should be a "7 knockoff games better (or as good) as the originals", and saints row and sleeping dogs both belong on that list
True. And stranger still, Sleeping Dogs began development as a sequel in the True Crime series of GTA-knockoff games.
So it's a knock-off of a knock-off, and still managed to be great.
Apologies, I just want to add - that title would be *screaming* for Alundra (a PS1 knock-off of Zelda, down to the pointy ears). And I'm not sure it's well-known enough to be included...
So that's what Mike was eating.
The first time I got a big enough streak to get "holy shit" from the announcer, I was the happiest I'd ever been.

Unreal Tournament was awesome. I even made a handful of capture the flag maps in the editor... So many good memories.
Shocked that World of Warcraft didn’t make the list.
Was gonna say that, it's probably the most popular spin-off game of all time. Unless the battle royal mode of Fortnite beats it
“Not to put too fine a point on it…….a bit dull” I see what you did there Andy.
To be fair, trains running on time is certainly Unreal...
The Sims Bustin' Out and The Urbz: Sims In The City were really fun spin offs for the console as well!
(I'm not claiming they were better though, just a fun variation)
there’s a TON of wonderful spin offs for pokémon, but how about the pokémon mystery dungeon series? the PMD games are heavily story focused and had emotional moments along with fun gameplay that put them above the original games imo. and some of the best music in the series. plus u were able to play as a pokémon yourself!
Yes this is exactly what I was thinking of! Especially explorers of sky!
Better than the original, though? Na.
@@traviscansler223 I feel like some people might think it's better than the original, mostly due to preference. But not enough for it to belong on a list like this for sure

When I saw Sims in the thumbnail, I feared they'd say The Urbz was the best one.
I was ready to kick off till I remembered The Sims is a spinoff.

Man im both happy and sad at Persona being here, im more of a an SMT og that got into Persona due to loving Digital Devil Saga and finding that persona was another spin off
Yeah, the mainline games stick with me a lot more than the recent Persona games, although they all have their strengths...I also love other spin-offs and would like to see them get some love - Devil Summoner and Devil Survivor are awesome.
I think they are both equally good though I prefer press turn over one mores, but Persona is just easier to get, and easier to figure out for newcomers thus more popular
I’m SO glad I just left the room where my dogs were sleeping when the fire alarm went off 😅
One of the weirdest spinoffs is the Nier series, which is based on one of the joke endings of Drakengard.
Thanks for giving my cats a panic attack with the fire alarm sound 🤣
Dammit Mike! I legit thought my smoke alarm was going off for a second there!
Man, that kitchen alarm really set me off. Bad memories (shudders).
It was definitely interesting to see the Rune Factory come about
The harvest moon games were starting to become more combat focused and eventually they just decided to make a completely new game focused on combat
"And start kitchen fires.... happens to the best of us."
Once I made Young Justice characters (across several households) and intended to have Miss Martian and Superboy get together but then realized I had accidentally set him as a teen and her as a young adult. I was brand new to the game at the time and did not know how to age her down into a teen but did know I could age him up with a birthday cake, so I waited for him to get home from school to do so. In that time, she got hungry and I had her make herself some mac n cheese.... she started a fire.... and Superboy got home during it.... and it killed him....
I tried so hard to resurrect him but couldn't figure it out. I ended up having to just remake him, so the family tree just showed Superman and then his sons: Superboy and a dead Superboy.
Oh, man. 😲 That’s so tragic. Poor you. Poor Sims. 😕

I'm surprised not to see Neir on this. For a spin-off of the Drakengard series, it has eclipsed the original in just about every way possible. There's a reason that replicant got a remake, but the original didn't
I must admit, when I saw Sims in the thumnail, a little part of me was hoping you'd talk about Urbz, Sims in the City, FEATURING Black Eyed Peas!
3:05 - I personally enjoyed SimAnt. Although haven't beaten it full because it's huge the amount of tiles you have to conquer and every time I played it on console, for some reason the incredibly slow save mechanic didn't work.

Y'all should do a skit where great games that are made from book series
Its 2021 and every now and again me and some old gaming buddies come together to have good old fanshioned LANparty, to honor the way we met back in the early 2000's. Top title we still play to this day: Unreal Tournament or UT99 since it has sequels. I dont know why or how they done it but atari gave UT a godlike ability: It doesnt need patches or crazy setting adjustments to run. In the 22 years i've been playing it, i never had any issues to get it to work. That alone deserves a medal. Since how many other games are unplayable these days because they dont run on newer hardware/OS.
"You don't get that in pokemon"
.....not with that attitude
definitely Portal. Half Life is one of the best 1st person shooters, but Portal redefined what an FPS can be
Except Portal is not an FPS: It’s a puzzle game. First person does not automatically make it a shooter.
Tensei rhymes with sensei, Andy. Pedant hat off..
The Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons, well, story is actually pretty interesting.
Marvelous, the developer of Harvest Moon (the Japanese name translates to something like Ranch Story) originally used Natsume as publisher of the Harvest Moon games in North America
Not too sure on the details on why, but they eventually dump Natsume for their own shiny and new subsidiary Xseed as their NA publisher.
Natsume, however seem to hold ownership of the brand name and indeed did publish some Harvest Moon games in the EU without Natsume having developed them earlier, before the breakup of the two companies.
Since then Natsume continued to release Harvest Moon games as they own that name, but the "real" spiritual successor is the Story of Seasons games made by Harvest Moon's original developer Marvelous.
I loved unreal tournament (2004), never knew it was a spin off series
Thank you for THE BEST background music track from all Persona series during the persona section
I didn't hear Burn My Dread in there at all.
Number 8: outside xtra
If it weren't for limiting themselves to 7, I'm sure Nier would've been on the list, being the amazing spin-off of Drakengard that it is.
If we want to go even deeper, I’ve always had a strong fondness for Sims: Medieval and MySims
Judgment was so much fun. Can’t wait to play the sequel. 😁
Andy seemed suspiciously happy about "Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters".
I suspect he read it, and liked it and that's why he has a copy.
Zombie Army is actually a quadrilogy now. And a darn fine one at that.
Oh god, I miss unreal tournament. That game was one of my favorites back in the day
Unreal Engine 5 is the newest, and is being used/developed partially for virtual production like in the Mandalorian.

Does Bloodborne count as a spinoff to Dark Souls? Because if it does, I vote it in for a commenter addition. And for that matter, does Darks Souls could as a spinoff to Demon Souls?
