If this video is here to create a special vibe around this exotic and amazing adventure, be aware it doesn't show the whole story, so find there some little complements about the company's story: - Three launches were done from the Zaire facilities (in the video, I mixed footage from 2 & 3: the orange rocket is from the 2nd while the aluminium one is from the 3rd) ; - The third launch was a total failure: the rocket crashed like ten seconds after the engine ignition, and even worst, in front of president Mobutu himself ; - After French and Soviet pressures on the Zairian government, Mobutu cancelled the agreement in 1979, and the OTRAG was forced to abandon the project ; - Mobutu's reign on Zaire was a total failure, the economy measures completely failed leading to many internal conflicts and crisis. With the first signs of the end of the Cold War in 1989, Zaire wasn't the "wall against communism in Africa" anymore, ending most of Western aids. The man was driven out of power and exiled in 1977, then died of cancer some weeks later ; - The failure of the program didn't put an end to the contribution of this country to the Space Race since the international airport of Ndjili, in Kinshasa, is part of the list of emergency runways usable for the American space shuttles ; - In 1980, the OTRAG's adventure continued in Gaddafi's Libya, where several successful tests were conducted. Sadly, Western powers got worried about a possible military use of OTRAG facilities by Libya. Due to Gaddafi 's regime and its bad reputation in the West, OTRAG personals left Libya. All equipments and installations were confiscated by Libyan military, hoping to later use the technologies left by the company. - A final launch was conducted in 1983, from the Swedish Esrange Space Center, but failed again. This will mark the end of the company's activities, which will share its experience before finally disappearing in 1987 ; - However, the modular design was proven to be feasible, and was directly taken up by Interorbital Systems, which will use the OTRAG design for its Neptune rocket series. I hope you enjoyed this little known piece of German/African/Space histories.
I had watched the documentary a lot of this footage came from beforehand, so I did notice things were a little jumbled. Still, great job capturing this weird little footnote in spaceflight history. For those interested the documentary is available online for free: ruclips.net/video/LfBcCLSQP-c/видео.html
My pleasure man, I really liked to work on that and I wanted peoples to discover it. Feel free to subscribe, like and share: it sounds common, but it really helps the channel! Thank you for the kind words.
I cannot wait for some more German Videos , this is some upperclasse Footage and some strange and rare Footage, be proud of yourself I hope to see some more in the nuear future
