I just bought my first truck, its a 2000 tundra and you videos are above and beyond helpful. you really are helping people and just being a rad guy. thanks for the educational video!!
I just installed the same camera on a pioneer in dash on my 05 tundra and your video allowed me to do it step by step. Also I’m glad you included your hiccups as it allowed me to avoid the same mistakes.
Sal, your video is much appreciated. I recently bought an '03 Tundra. Just did my first stereo/back-up camera install. Took me quite awhile (figuring in first-timer syndrome, runs to Home Depot, calls to Crutchfield, and troubleshooting), but it seems to be functioning. Thanks!
Glad to hear it! There's a lot of wires and parts, but it's satisfying once it all comes together. And having the backup camera is so nice, I'm glad it worked out for you! Thanks for watching
Very professional looking rear camera installation! I was a bit intimidated by the task of installing a rear view camera on my gen1, so I had it professionally installed. The camera on my truck was installed on the top of the license plate, but I definitely dig the camera near the tailgate handle.
Thanks for the help brotha! I installed the CarPlay and backup camera into my 04’ tundra just by watching your videos. I have no experience with this stuff but I’ve been able to do it fairly easily. Thanks again 💯
So glad I found your channel. I also have a 2002 Tundra. Just installed a Portable Apple Car Play device. (I couldn't live without the volume knob). I mounted my Rear View Camera on top of the license plate specifically for hooking up my trailer. Will be going through all your videos to see what else I need to modify and/or upgrade. Thanks!!!
I just installed the same camera on my 01 Tundra with the help of your excellent video which made it very easy and effortless. If I can install this with your video, trust me, anyone can. Thank you!
Nice video. Sealed wire splices, or adding sealant, is a must, as well as conduit to protect the wire under the chassis. Sorry, but my industrial electrical background is overly critical.
Good point, definitely an oversight on my part. I've never taken the tailgate off in my ownership so it hasn't been an issue, but I'm sure it could be done easily! Thanks for watching
I recently bought an 01 tundra and have been watching your videos and I just saw your key chain with the remove before flight tag on it. That's like the first thing I put on when I got it, just thought it was crazy we both had that
Haha that's great man! I've had this keychain on all of my cars for the last 8 years since high school. Hope you're enjoying the videos, and congrats on the new tundra! - Sal
Great video! Definitely helped but unfortunately the previous owner installed an aftermarket stereo and cut off all the factory plugs so I think I'm going to take it somewhere to have it installed
Dude. Thanks for this video! I have a 2002 and am looking to put some money into it. This video is a huge help especially since you have a link for an aftermarket head unit that already fits. Was there anything special you needed to do or was it as simple as removing the old head unit and simply bolting the new one in?
Do you remember if you used the OEM bracket to mount it on Atoto’s bracket to line up the 4 screws or did you use something else? I have a sequoia which is identical to Tundra but my OEM would not bolt on ATOTOs bracket
If I remember correctly, I used the Atoto bracket and was able to get 3 of the 4 bolts lined up. Not sure if they changed the bracket since I bought mine though. Thanks for watching
@@JDMDrivewayThanks a lot for your fast response, I believe it’s the same from what’s looking like in your video. Will give it another try tonight and hopefully it works Thanks again!
I do have a question, most of the changes I have seen you've made in some videos, I plan on doing or have done as well. With that being said, I have had some issues with dimming (I assume the alternator) with upgraded speakers and headlights alone. More power issues with a head unit. My question is, have you either replaced or upgraded your alternator, if so what amperage are you using? My Current alternator is 100a OEM Denso, im not sure what to look for as changes or an upgrade.
Since it's not centered, wouldn't it not be accurate? I mounted mine on the license plate bracket. The camera came with my head unit but it's now bad due to rain. I purchased a replacement and thinking about mounting it on the same spot as you but centered. I may have to cut the panel to set the camera in. My new camera can rotate and swivel. Personally I don't care for the guidelines. Even if you have a factory one, it will not be accurate when you put on bigger tires or raise your truck. I mainly use it to make sure there are no kids or dogs behind when I backup.
Do you remember using any trim kits to fit right? I’ve used the same the ATOTO stereo but mine had big gaps on the sides and both top and bottom, it looks ridiculous to be honest.
That's super weird, I didn't need any trim kit to get it to fit nicely in there. I don't know if Atoto changed the size of the head unit, seems unlikely. Hope you can get it fixed though, thanks for watching!
Nice install! My self-install (06 Tundra) for my new radio head unit was similar, but I mounted the camera to the license plate. The wire routing was the same up through the grommet under the driver's seat. From there, I ran the wire over to the center consul and tucked the wire along the consul edge and carpet. I then fished the rest behind the dash and connected to the radio head. I purchased the head unit and BU camera from Crutchfield. They have some awesome connectors that I liked better than the fold over clip kind. Well done
Thanks Steve, that routing sounds good too, especially if you've got captains chairs up front instead of a bench like I've got. Good to know about the other connectors too, I'll have to check them out. I typically like to solder this wiring, but for ease of install I chose these splicing ones. Thanks for watching! - Sal
Love your videos!!! New subscriber and based on all of your info…we are currently looking for a first gen 4x4 14:50 for our 16 year old son. Keep up the great work.
my backup camera came with my stereo head unit. license plate mount. not loving the look but camera view is excellent 👍🏼. the small dial clip happened to me, too 😂. one comment, i think the rectangular hole you used might be the hole to lower your spare tire. be careful with that. love videos. keep it up.
I've got the ATOTO F7 XE head unit and I've been really happy with it. I bought the adapter harness on crutchfield and it worked no issues. Thanks for watching! ruclips.net/video/z10_DbflgKo/видео.html
Just a comment about running the wiring through the rectangular hole in the end of the PU bed. That is the hole you would insert the spare tire rod through. You could chaff your wiring when lowering the spare tire? It might be better to remove the tail gate and drill a small hole next to the rectangular hole? Just an idea. Great video!
Hmm, didn't even think about that. I'm not sure what that spare tire rod looks like but I think you should be able to avoid chafing the wiring. Definitely an option to drill another hole right there. Thanks for watching!
Was looking to do something similar. I noticed you can't see your trailer hitch in the view, which would be my primary use case. As such, I was thinking a license plate model may be a better idea vs. putting in the handle.
Yeah, unfortunately that is one of the biggest downsides of mounting it here. I know that they sell handles with an integrated camera that may have a view of the hitch, but the license plate one may be your best, sure bet solution. Plus, it will still work if you have your tailgate down, which mine does not. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. The nice thing about choosing the handle is it’s easy to replace if you messed it up or change your mind in the future. (My rear handle ripped off a few years ago and it was an easy replacement.) Did you replace your head unit or buy it that way? I still have the stock JBL unit. Curious if your after market head unit was wired to bypass the amp or if speakers were just rewired?
Good point about being able to replace the handle, I had replaced mine about a year ago because the handle ripped off as well and it's a very easy job. I installed the Atoto head unit, and I bypassed the factory amp. Not sure if it's correct or producing the best sound it could, but it's been working for me lol thanks for watching! - Sal
The 3 colored loops that stick out of the wiring can be snipped to adjust any flipped images. The instructions should tell you which one to cut to fix the left and right flip. Hope this helps!
Couple of questions. What type of head unit/radio do you have? Are you happy with it? Do the steering wheel controls still work? I guess you can't take the tailgate off with the way it's wired.
I have the ATOTO F7 XE and I'm happy with it. I don't have experience with any of the competitors from Pioneer or Sony or whatever, but the ATOTO has held up well. I don't have steering wheel controls on my truck, but I believe there is wiring available to retain that functionality. And no, unfortunately you cant take off the tailgate with it wired this way, but I couldn't think of a better way to do it. Thanks for watching! amzn.to/3AX0v5O
I have had two of the higher end Atoto head units in my tundra, both 10.1”, the Atoto A6 and the S8. I, personally, would stay away from Atoto after several terrible experiences with their customer service. I’ll try to keep it short… The A6 which cost like $400 at the time, straight up crapped the bed after lien 8 months. Atoto customer service was garbage. They offered me either A) a refurbished, lower grade, less expensive head unit-even though it was under warranty. Or B) to get the newer S8 model of the same level of head unit that I had already, they forced me to pay the difference in price between the older lower grade refurbished model they offered. Stupidly, I angrily forked over the $. Well after like 10 months the head unit started completely factory resetting itself at any random time totally out of the blur. I’d be driving along and then out of nowhere it factory resets, losing all my settings, all my apps, all thr customizations. It was infuriating. Atoto customer service slow walked me until literally like 2 days after my 1 year warranty was up and then completely denied my warranty. It was complete bullshit since I had been emailing with them about it for months before the warranty was up. Pisses me off. So I personally will never buy Atoto again. They also claimed they have just as good a warranty as Apple which about made me fall over Laughing. Tess, sure….except I’ve never had every Apple prodict I bought die within the first year and then have customer service screw me out of replace both times. I would definitely look into getting either like a Joying or preferably a Teyes CC3.
The pink wire is the reverse trigger on the head unit so that it knows when the truck is put into reverse. Hope this clears it up, thanks for watching!
Great job. I will be copying your exact setup. Can you tell me if I need to purchase a head unit mount for that. My 06 tundra still has the original Cd cassette unit installed. When I bought it used I was surprised to see cassette in 06.
That's great to hear. I was able to use the bracket from Atoto and get 3/4 of the bolts to fit up on both sides but it's plenty sturdy. I'm sure in 06 it had to be one of the last cars being sold with a cassette player! Haha thanks for watching!
Just picked up my 04 Tundra today and already ordered the head and the back up camera Can’t live without CarPlay. do you have any Advice about installing the Head?
Not really, just definitely buy an adapter harness from crutchfield. Then you won't need to do any splicing into the factory wiring and it's easy to reverse/change in the future. Thanks for watching - Sal
Rear a bunch of reviews on the ATOTO head unit. Is yours still working and have you had any problems. Looking to place on my Xmas wish list if it is any good.
Mine has been great! I recently made an update review video here, where I go into more detail about my experience. Thanks for watching! ruclips.net/video/z10_DbflgKo/видео.html
Great instructional video. thank you for sharing. I purchased and was able to install the same camera successfully. One Question...I have an ATOTO F7 XE head unit. the reverse function works flawlessly, However, the "live rear view " function is not working.. it say's "NO VIDEO DETECTED". Does your "rear view function work? Thankyou again
That's a great question, and one that I played around with too. I have the same issue where it doesn't play for the live rear view. I think that the issue is that we tapped into the reverse wire to trigger the camera turning on, and using that live rear view button doesn't trigger it on its own. Not sure if we could install a separate relay for that to work properly, or if it's more-so designed for a separate camera like a front view camera out back. Not sure. Thanks for watching, and glad the install went well otherwise! - Sal
In your splice into the reverse light wires, did you use both the red and blue? Or separate for just the red? Can’t really tell from the video, looks like you did just the red but not 100% sure! Love your tundra vids man
Hey man, sorry it wasn't super clear in the video but that wire on my truck is just a single red wire with blue striping. Then the ground is a black wire with white striping. You really just splice into whatever power wire is going to the reverse bulb. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
No specific reason really, but I personally don't love the look of the license plate mounted ones. It would probably give a better view tbh, but I like the OEM+ look of having it in the handle. Can't go wrong either way though! Thanks for watching - Sal
Unfortunately, no I can't see the hitch. Definitely one of the limitations of mounting it here. You'd have to space the camera out even more, and then it would start hitting the upper part of the handle. A different brand camera may give you more clearance to do it.
I'd have to go double check, but I think that everything I unplugged, I re-plugged back in afterwards. I only added one input wire for the camera, and then tapped the reverse wire as well. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching - Sal
Just installed a backup camera on the exact same Tundra. Everything works except the reverse video shows upside down on the head unit display... Any ideas?
Hmm I'd look at the manual for the camera and see what it says there. This one I installed had some wire loops that you could cut to flip the image depending on how you orient the camera. Otherwise, I'm not too sure. Maybe there's a setting in your head unit to flip the image? Hope you can get it figured out, and thanks for watching
Hmm that's funky, I'd assume it has to do with some settings/limitations of your head unit. If it works otherwise then I'd assume the wiring is all correct. Not too sure tho, hope you can get it figured out! - Sal
It's the Atoto F7 XE with wireless CarPlay. I did a review of the F7 SE with wired CarPlay here, and it has a bunch of the same features. Overall I'm happy with the head unit and I would recommend it, especially the wireless version. Thanks for watching - Sal ruclips.net/video/YqfgUjR0HrE/видео.html
I would guess that the reverse trigger wire (should be pink) was either missed or is not reading properly. That wire should get input when the truck gets put into reverse and trigger it automatically on the head unit. Thanks for watching!
I need help finding a double din dash kit for my 2000 tundra (the peice with the 4 10mm bolts that holds the radio in place) i currently have my radio attached to my A/C control panel and is a major pain when removing.
Hmm, I'd assume that you could find some universal double din brackets on Amazon with a bunch of holes to adapt to different models of head units. My head unit came with brackets so I didn't do any research myself. Best of luck figuring it out tho! - Sal
Unfortunately, I don't think so. The way I have it wired up, it only gets power when the reverse lights are on because that's the signal wire to the head unit. I've tried using the camera while in drive or park and I can't get it to work. I'm sure if you wired it differently you could get it to turn on whenever you want, but it may not turn on automatically when you shift into reverse. The other sorta option would be to have a second camera that you could mount somewhere else like your third brake light and have that wired so it gets power all the time and you can select it in your head unit when you want to check on your load. Just spit-balling here. Thanks for watching! - Sal
It's been good, still happy with the picture quality. Unfortunately it had some condensation after a couple of rainy days, but it cleared up again after about a week. No complaints otherwise, thanks for watching!
Still working great. I've had a few instances (maybe 4 times total) where the camera shows as disconnected when I put the truck in reverse. But it fixed itself on its own and has been solid otherwise. Would still recommend!
Ok cool, thanks for the advice. Genuinely curious what you would recommend doing instead. I'm always trying to learn better ways of doing things. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway the best way to connect a third wire is a technique called “threading the needle” This video show the problems with those T-taps and the proper method Really enjoy the videos and was very grateful for the one about the tailgate bushings!
It's a fairly universal fit, so it should work as long as the tailgate handle is similar. Hopefully someone else can confirm here in the comments though. Thanks for watching!
i just spent the 10 extra dolllars on the leekooluu and did not have to do any of that wiring you had to do, just pluged into my cigarette lighter and that was it.
I seriously considered it, and one of the key benefits of doing it that way is not losing functionality when the tailgate is down. I just thought it looked cleaner to do it in the handle. Personal preference. Thanks for watching!
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
Yeah there's definitely some issues with mounting it up there, like it not being usable with the tailgate down or not seeing the trailer hitch, but I prefer the look of it up there. Thanks for watching
Yeah I agree, it just seemed like a lot of money when this camera was only like $30. If I was gonna do it again I would probably get the integrated one. Thanks for watching!
3:45 - PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT USE THOSE WIRE SPLICES. They are absolute trash and lead to all sorts of problems, especially so on the exterior of a vehicle. They should not exist.
Good question, I looked into those and I agree that it would simplify things and the camera could probably see a lot better too. But I personally felt like spending well over $100 for the tailgate masters handle wasn't worth it for my truck. Thanks for watching! - Sal
If you ever lose the metal clips that keep your heater knobs tight, you can use some alien tape stuffed into the post hole or just regular like 3m double sided tape, or even just a rubber band wrapped around the post…I’ve also used just some silicone tape in the post hole as well, they all work great to keep your knobs on tight. It’s one very common issue with these first gen tundras.
Oh nice, good ideas. I've seen some people glue them on which works great until you need to access the back side of that panel for whatever reason lol thanks for watching!

Oh nice!
What did you splice the one into on your back of your stereo when you said I’m gonna splice this one into the pink one?
The pink wire is the reverse trigger on the head unit so that it knows when the truck is put into reverse. Hope this clears it up, thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway thank you I just started trying to find it by splicing into each wire and I found it on the first wire thank you
@@JDMDriveway Thank you very much for your quick reply. This helped me a bunch. Thanks for the information. Will be watching your channel.
Good video man! I have a prinsu style roof rack on mine, I just ran my rear camera to the back of the rack so I can record the bed and tool box.
Oh cool, that's a great idea. Thanks for watching! - Sal
Where do you get the screen unit which is mounted in the CD/Radio player area?
I got it on Amazon, thanks for watching!amzn.to/45Zht1V
Thanks for the video. Keep up the great content. I too use it for modifications on my 2006
Cheers
Awesome, glad they're helpful. Thanks for watching! - Sal

@@JDMDriveway gotcha okay thank you for the response man!
Bravo.
Thank you!
I also own 1st gen Toyota Tundra Crew Cab TRD. You should have bought a back up camera you can mount on the license plate
To each their own, I just preferred the aesthetic look of it in the handle. Thanks for watching!
I like the install but just wondering what made you choose this style vs one that mounta to like the license plate frame
No specific reason really, but I personally don't love the look of the license plate mounted ones. It would probably give a better view tbh, but I like the OEM+ look of having it in the handle. Can't go wrong either way though! Thanks for watching - Sal
@@JDMDriveway great video either way man. Hey do you have IG, where i can DM you?
Yeah dude, my insta is @salciolino22
Great video man, with a hitch installed are you able to see the hitch? I feel like you could but hard to tell from the vid.
That's a great question, I'm actually gonna go try it right now lol
Unfortunately, no I can't see the hitch. Definitely one of the limitations of mounting it here. You'd have to space the camera out even more, and then it would start hitting the upper part of the handle. A different brand camera may give you more clearance to do it.
@@JDMDriveway lol well thanks for trying and letting me know. I still like how oem/discreet it looks
When you disconnect all the wire is one of the white connections did u just leave it disconnect
I installed the same camera on my tundra today but if I am on the phone and put the truck in reverse the camera will not come on any suggestions?
Hmm that's funky, I'd assume it has to do with some settings/limitations of your head unit. If it works otherwise then I'd assume the wiring is all correct. Not too sure tho, hope you can get it figured out! - Sal
Where did you get mounting bracket for the aftermarket radio?
My aftermarket Atoto radio came with the bracket, and I think most of them should. Thanks for watching - Sal
what head unit do you have in that? i've been looking for one
It's the Atoto F7 XE with wireless CarPlay. I did a review of the F7 SE with wired CarPlay here, and it has a bunch of the same features. Overall I'm happy with the head unit and I would recommend it, especially the wireless version. Thanks for watching - Sal

Hey I got the atoto f7 would you know why my back up camera only works when I use the app R-cam ?
I would guess that the reverse trigger wire (should be pink) was either missed or is not reading properly. That wire should get input when the truck gets put into reverse and trigger it automatically on the head unit. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway i guess mine didn’t come with a trigger wire only power ground and rcin so doesn’t work 🥲
Keep up the video i use them to fix my tundra thank u
Will do! Glad the videos are helpful, thanks for watching! - Sal
- Sal
@@JDMDriveway thank you sir, im just gonna buy your head unit when i get extra money. Building a truck at 17 really isnt the easiest😂
What is the cable size that runs from the camera to the head unit.
Cheers
Hey Daryl, its a normal RCA cable and it's 26 feet long. Thanks for watching - Sal
I want the add the same touch screen stereo on my AC 04 tundra where can I get it
Nvm just saw the description
Thanks for watching!
Is there any way to keep the camera on while the truck is in drive? I often haul big items and would love to see behind me
Unfortunately, I don't think so. - Sal
Is there a camera for 2008 tacoma?
This one that I used is universal and should work on just about any car/truck with an aftermarket head unit. Thanks for watching!
Gracias. ... great video

How is it holding up?
It's been good, still happy with the picture quality. Unfortunately it had some condensation after a couple of rainy days, but it cleared up again after about a week. No complaints otherwise, thanks for watching!

A year later how is the camera working for you??
Still working great. I've had a few instances (maybe 4 times total) where the camera shows as disconnected when I put the truck in reverse. But it fixed itself on its own and has been solid otherwise. Would still recommend!
what do you have for a head unit?
I've got the Atoto F7 WE. It's served me really well! Thanks for watching

Great video!
Would strongly suggest NOT to use those T Taps though. They’re garbage and cause all sort of electrical gremlins.
Ok cool, thanks for the advice. Genuinely curious what you would recommend doing instead. I'm always trying to learn better ways of doing things. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway the best way to connect a third wire is a technique called “threading the needle”

Does anyone know if this will work with my 2000 Tacoma?
It's a fairly universal fit, so it should work as long as the tailgate handle is similar. Hopefully someone else can confirm here in the comments though. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway thanks!
I would just drill the tail gate and be perfect with distance and level.
i just spent the 10 extra dolllars on the leekooluu and did not have to do any of that wiring you had to do, just pluged into my cigarette lighter and that was it.
Nice that's an easy solution for sure. I just prefer the cleaner install with no exposed wiring. Personal preference. Thanks for watching!
Your 2002 is in mint condition.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching
Should have mounted it in the center of the tag...
I seriously considered it, and one of the key benefits of doing it that way is not losing functionality when the tailgate is down. I just thought it looked cleaner to do it in the handle. Personal preference. Thanks for watching!
Great video but you didn’t have to cut the wire you could of ran the wires from the front to the back instead of back to front
That's a good point, I didn't even think about that. Everything still worked out though, glad the video was helpful! Thanks for watching
No worries just trying to help out
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
I think it would’ve worked better down by the license plate.
Yeah there's definitely some issues with mounting it up there, like it not being usable with the tailgate down or not seeing the trailer hitch, but I prefer the look of it up there. Thanks for watching
It will be better if you buy the handle camera directly
Yeah I agree, it just seemed like a lot of money when this camera was only like $30. If I was gonna do it again I would probably get the integrated one. Thanks for watching!
3:45 - PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT USE THOSE WIRE SPLICES. They are absolute trash and lead to all sorts of problems, especially so on the exterior of a vehicle. They should not exist.
Thanks man for the heads up, I haven't had any issues with them in the past but I'll try to swap them out to prevent any issues. Thanks for watching!
Why not get a tailgate camera for it they sell them all you have to do is replace the tailgate handle
Good question, I looked into those and I agree that it would simplify things and the camera could probably see a lot better too. But I personally felt like spending well over $100 for the tailgate masters handle wasn't worth it for my truck. Thanks for watching! - Sal
Where in the hell he found a metal hangup
I had my metal hanger laying around from getting some clothes done at a dry cleaner, not sure where you can buy them anymore though

Don't use those cheap red splices, do it right and use a proper crimp on or solder your wire connects and cover with heat shrink.
I generally like to solder my connections, but the his one hasn't failed on me yet lol *knock on wood*. Thanks for watching!
