Be kind to yourself. When I did WW, everyone at the meeting was on their 2 or 3 time back. That should have told me something about maintenance! While I lost 35 lbs. On WW, it put me in a very bad place with food. I was constantly thinking of points or what I was doing for my next meal. I got off that merry go round and changed my relationship with food. I try to exercise and eat healthy but don't beat myself up when I don't.

I understand the struggle. This is what has worked for me and I know 99% of y'all reading this wouldn't think of stooping so low to get healthy....I got a job as a picker at Amazon. The job forced me to walk from. 5 to 12 miles per night during a ten hour shift. The first month was grueling. My feet swelled. I was uncomfortable. Now, after 5 months, I am 40 pounds slimmer, can run up 4 flights of industrial stairs, and have stamina I haven't had since my 20s. I am now heading to another warehouse job where I expect to lose another 40 pounds and get paid for working and losing weight. No gym membership necessary. Just work and get paid with your free time, even part time and you will lose weight. I know you are a caregiver too. I know most people will have excuses why they would never work a labor intensive job, I get it. But, it works! I also made an extra $14,000!
P.S. I turn 61 this month!. I was disabled, on 8 prescriptions ten years ago. Now, just one Rx. No more excuses!!!

Hi Cathy, don’t worry about the 1 pound gain, that’s nothing really - especially as you’ve had a stressful month. I think the important thing is to never give up. It doesn’t matter if it’s only tiny steps forward, it’s better than nothing. Something I do if I’ve only had a very small weekly loss, which I find helps me, is I think of the weight I started the week at and add on 2 pounds which is probably what I’d have gained had I not dieted, then compare the real weight with that. It won’t help everyone, but it helps me to stay motivated xx really enjoy your channel by the way xx

I noticed something today as I was watching this video. WW doesn’t “penalize” us for foods. We have a points budget to use as we wish. Whole foods are always healthier even if there are points involved. I’ve been on WW for just over a year, lost 87 lbs so far, and at 63 that’s quite an accomplishment for me. Eat corn, grapes, EVO, and just track so are aware of what’s working. Also for me I have to be all in and stop the excuses. Easier said than done for sure. You’ve got this!

Cathy, have you thought about intermittent fasting? I seriously recommend watching Jason Fung 's RUclips channel. He is a nephrologist and Canadian to boot.😉Just spend time watching his videos, consider his advice and perhaps give it a try. I've lost 21 pounds since December 30 and I've not been exercising. I have several health/mobility issues. I need to lose at least 100 pounds. I feel motivated and capable of doing it now, after struggling for years with the conventional calorie restriction diets. I,too, was a stress eater and carb fiend. I'm conquering that faster than I thought I would. I'm 62 and have struggled lifelong with obesity.
Also, if you suspect you have sleep apnea see your doctor about treatment. Lack of sleep causes you to get/stay fat, a long with other health issues.
Best of luck whatever you choose to do.

Cathy, I'm a few years older than you so I can say this: Part of being an adult is growing in your thoughts and opinions. You can think for yourself now - regardless of what some pseudo-authority (A.K.A. Weight Watchers - who are taking your money, too, ha ha ) tells you how to think. You're an discerning adult and can make up your own mind based on your experience. "Bad" is a judgement some person placed on a particular food. Five hundred years ago it was common knowledge that tomatoes were poisonous. Use your own "Cathy Sense" to think for yourself. (P.S. Only 1 pound gain is fabulous after a month of stress - good for you!)

Hi Cathy, be easy on yourself! I understand and so do many other women. When I was young, I thought that when I got "old", I wouldn't have to be so diligent about what I ate and controlling my weight. Was I wrong. It is a life long process. I where a size xl and now I am happy holding that line. Per the annual usual physical and the tests a person should have, I am very healthy. I eat well, just too much at times. I do water aerobics 4 times per week . I am no longer addicted to sugar or carbs. I am now in the maintaining mode and feel good about it. I always have the " I like to loose a little more weight" mode. If I do, great, if I don't, that is ok.
You are not alone, we are all supporting each other in our journey. The fact that you have not abandoned your mission of weight loss, is indicative of you never letting your weight get totally out of control.
Looking forward to your next video.
    Linda from Las Vegas

I'm an emotional eater as well, I lost my husband 3 years ago after a ten year battle with illness. But I will eat even when I'm bored. I also have a slow htyroid which makes losing weight 10X harder. Tried the counting clories, and portion, but it didn't work for me. 5 lbs a month was not enought to keep me interested and i would just give up. Only thing that worked for me was keto. Eggs, meat and vegtables, soups, nuts, berries and only healthy fats, (extra virgin olive, avocado, or coconut oil and grass fed butter or ghee). All other oils margarines and fats are highly inflamatory to the body. Only 20-30 grams of carbs a day. Spaghetti squash and meatballs or cabbage lassagna are some of my favourite dishes. Being of Italian background pasta pizza were my life. Not to mention the pasteries and sweets. Don't miss them anymore. Keto got rid of my carb addiction. Your body only has 2 energy souces glucose(sugar) or fat. So as long as you feed your body carbs and sugar it will alway use that energy source first. It won't use the fat in your body as energy and therefore it gets and stays stored. As soon as you eliminate the carbs(sugar) It will start using the stored fat. I still go to McDonalds and order lettuce wrapped burgers and bring my keto bread with me to replace the bun. Some private burger resturants even offer a keto bun. Keto reset my metabolism. Lost 40 bls in 3 months but more importantly lost 4 dress size. Keto is more about shrinking your size rather than your weight. Just melts the fat off your body , and no exercising. However once I felt lighter and much stonger I wanted to exercise! It became so much easier. I just turned 61 and physically feel better than I have in years. Been on Keto for 4 years and my doctor says im healthy. I find keto very easy, and the desserts if you want to have one are awesome. Keto cheesecake yum! I bring keto desserts to friends and family and they love them. I really think Keto is worth a try. It takes a couple of weeks to get into it, but then its a breeze. It's a lifestyle that thankfully now is easy to source all kinds of recipes. I guess any system if you follow it right you will lose weight, but Keto for me there is no comparison. Good luck to you, and thank you for sharing your life experiences. We need to communicate and help eachother, and you do just that. Hello from Ontario Sorry for my big rambling!

I moved corn to where it belonged. In grains.... corn is not a vegetable. I love corn.

For me at nearly 60, I’m realizing I need to move my body more. I’m not a “gym rat” I’d rather walk my dog outside with the fresh air!
The other trick for me is if I don’t buy certain foods I can’t eat them.
My weight came over 3 years ago when I was diagnosed with Giant Cell Arteritis and put on 80mg of prednisone to keep me from losing my sight and having a stroke. So, it has really been a challenge, my meds have drastically reduced. Our life is always baby steps to reach our goal.

My two take aways, I am a binge eater, once I start eating, it’s hard to stop, plus it takes my stomach a long time to register fullness. So I restrict my calories every other day to 500 cal and on my eating days, I eat 350 cal meals four times a day. So far this is helping to reset my brain around food. Meditation and exercise, and staying busy keeps my mind off food.

Don't be too hard on yourself Cathy. We all have our ups and downs and let's face it, after menopause the weight can be really hard to lose. Limiting the processed foods and eliminating the over processed foods are probably best. And I know when I go for something processed like ice cream (my weakness) I go for a brand with less ingredients and/or ones that have whole ingredients like cane sugar vs. high fructose corn syrup. So I choose Haagen Dazs over Bluebell. But anyhow, I enjoyed the label info and percentages. I didn't know any of that. Also, I hope your husband is feeling better.

I've been doing this since Sept and it's coming off slowly but it is coming off without a lot of effort as far as exercise goes (I am 70 years old with hip problems and so can't walk too far) but I'm sticking to the plan. Yes I've had a few 'cheats' during this time but I just got right back on my plan and it's working. Honestly, no flour and no sugar plus Metformin ( 1 500mg at dinner) works wonders...You can do it!! I understand the emotional eating, January and February were stressful for me this year and it showed. Interestingly, this year was harder on me than the time when we were under shutdown for covid. Go figure!
Anyway, the tool that was the most valuable for me was a food diary. It was a struggle at first but I wrote down EVERY bite. It was eye-opening and helped me see where I needed more support for my journey and when I was vulnerable. And turning on ourselves over weight gain is pointless. I love your attitude of well, I will try again! We would never walk up to someone else and be so rude to them about their weight but we feel like it is OK to look in the mirror and be more cruel than any one else could be. No one sits down to a meal and thinks well, now I want to be fat so I shall eat too much! We didn't gain the weight in a day and we won't lost in a day.

Hi Cathy! I’ll be 71 this year and I did Weight Watchers back in the dark ages when they required multi fish meals a week and weighed you in front of a crowd. Ugh. It didn’t work for me. When I had my kids my prenatal book talked about watching your weight and said ‘fruit in large quantities can be quite fattening’. Must have been that banana split fruit. Haha! My mom told me she told her OB she was so very hungry and he told her to eat a head of lettuce. The medical community was really on this, right? 🙄 The best advice I got was to get as many colors as you can on your plate, and it has really worked for me making me add things I might not have tried otherwise and leave off things that would have been my first choices. Hugs to you and best wishes to your hubby in dealing with awful sinus. Spring can not come too soon!

My husband is a cancer patient at the Mayo Clinic. We had a consultation with one of their nutritionists, as he's put on weight with his treatment. Her plan pretty much aligns with WW- keeping track of what you eat, portion control, limiting the "high point" foods, and avoiding processed stuff. Here's to a better March for us both.

I can relate. I have been on a learning journey about health and nutrition. There are so many ideas out there. I have quite a few food sensitivity issues, and I am working to find foods that don’t upset my digestion. So many nutritionists mention eating avocados, but those give me lots of problems. I’ve also quit caffeine recently to help me sleep better and help my stomach too. Cathy, don’t give up. Keep working on being healthy and lowering stress. ❤

The problem with stress eaters, and I am one, is that we can eat a lot of candy bars. Or bread, cheese, or whatever our weaknesses are.
This is why a lot of what the “experts” say won’t work for us. It works for sloppy eaters. Stress or compulsive eaters are driven by something other than sloppy eating habits.
Ask yourself if the stress eating is consistent with your goals for yourself before you reach for the donut or whatever. That helps me more than all the “expert” advice. And limit carbs, Cathy. I swear for some of us they open up the floodgates to a binge. I kept 43 pounds off for 3 years while limiting carbs and staying away from junk food for the most part. Then Thanksgiving 2019 came. I ate stuffing. It’s been over 3 years, and the 9 pounds I gained won’t go away until I ditch the carbs.
Been dieting since I was 11; 69 now. I ditched dietitians years ago. WW too.

Great video, Cathy! I love the plate visual. I will use this as I plan our meals each week. I so agree with you that whole real foods are what we should be eating. Corn, grapes, all of it. I found the new labelling regulations interesting too. And I'm with you - I have to get my exercise in the morning or else my day gets away from me. Plus, by the end of the day I am just "spent" and don't put as much into a workout. Thanks for this!

Hope your husband is feeling better or feeling better soon. So much has changed in the weight loss world there is a lot of mind set now that wasn't a part of it years ago. I have learned that stress and loss of sleep can cause weight gain so if you keep going the weight should start coming off again once things are calm again .You can always try meditation or yoga to relieve stress. Also bodies water weight changes frequently (especially with women) so you can gain between 1-5 lbs and then lose it again quickly. Stay positive and know you got this and you will be there before you know it.💖

It was my birthday month plus 2 of my daughters. We ate out to celebrate, I lost 2 lbs buuuut I have to weigh in on Tuesday and am afraid I’ve gained the 2 pounds and maybe more. My diet is using the plate like that but you eat more than I’m use to. I have a medical issue that needs certain foods and not other, sometimes it clashes with what foods on my so called diet. Plus I can’t certain foods I’m supposed to be eating. I am my worse critic also. I want fried foods because it was how I grew up.

Also Cathy , you will find what diet works for you. I’m 76 years old and I probably have done them all. It’s taken having type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure for me to go on low carbohydrate and stay there. I have a cheat meal once a week. There’s plenty to eat , I hardly eat any meat, I don’t like it. I eat salad with nuts and a few croutons bacon bits. I eat eggs and dairy. Dark greens, broccoli is my favorite. Broccoli cheddar soup today.
I didn’t do well on weight watchers, that wide range of choices not for me. I have to restrict what I buy and eat. I eat apples, pears tiny tomatoes too . These are always available to me.
Love you and wish you the best. I don’t eat the low carb treats to buy either , I don’t trust them. Better to eat some nuts or seeds .😘👍❤️

I never lost more than 10 pounds and after 5 years I ended up having the band removed because I ended up vomitting from almost everything including water!!!! I know people have great success with gastric bypass or Lapland surgery BUT, just a warning, its not always the answer and it can end up being a bigger misery than being overweight.

Nutrition and exercise has changed a lot not so much in the foods but engaging your brain.
Personally as soon as I ditched the slimming clubs and fad diets I’ve lost weight and kept it off.
It takes me way longer than most but recently I’ve found that taking breaks by upping calories is really good.
So if life is really hard or I have been really hitting my diet hard, I can feel myself needing a break it’s ok.
Finally seen the hospital about allergies more drugs and a lecture I need to get to a and E as soon as it happens but it’s happening less as since loosing weight I know what’s in my foods.
Also to heck with beating myself up I deserve to be happy enjoy food and life.
Mums got breast cancer dads broken his arm and my diets well it’s ok but not amazing. Old me would have overeaten and said stuff it new me eats more but not to break the bank more and because of that I feel better.
The best thing for loosing weight is your brain get your head in the game it makes it so much better.
Personally I’d rather keep my money and spend it on exercise help and my pt has helped me way more inching up to that 8 stone.
I think you talking to a nutritionist one on one will help you way more.
I know you can do it heck look at this channel takes balls to put yourself out there. More than anything set yourself up to succeed everyone has different ways you will find your path just keep plodding along chick

If you are an "emotional eater" then the trick is to find another habit which you enjoy other than eating food. Of course, the difficulty is making it something which is healthy and you enjoy. For me, it was picking up the dog lead and walking around the block with her!

Can't remember if I have shared this with you before. If so, sorry for the repeat. I am not a registered dietitian but as an RN and Disease Management Health Coach for a long time, have had a lot of training and experience. We had access to resources and academic research that was helpful in helping our clients/patients manage their weight. There are as many pieces to the "eating puzzle" as 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. But one thing I learned that helped me understand emotional or stress eating was interesting. When we eat, our body releases insulin to utilize the sugar in our food. Insulin is a feel good substance. It elevates our mood. So, if we are sad, mad, stressed, depressed, or whatever, we unconsciously eat because the insulin is gonna make us feel better. We may not be hungry, but we want the mood boosting effect that eating brings to us. Cathy, you are doing fine. You have a jigsaw life!!! And becoming more knowledgeable about nutrition is always beneficial. Thanks for being transparent about your journey. Love ya.

So, I know you're not interested in a Keto diet. I accept that, however my story references Keto. Please don't take this as a push to make you do something you don't want to do.
Now, that being said, I was prescribed the Keto diet to deal with a medical condition by my Dr. of internal medicine (ie: specialist). When I contacted a dietician for some advice it turned into a shaming exercise topped off with an hour of being told what my Dr. had prescribed was wrong. Please take care and don't let your consultation change your trajectory. Make sure you are getting the advice you are seeking and don't put up with someone else pushing their agenda.
Best of luck to you and don't sweat the small stuff (ie: 1lb).

She is a little over the top with her appearance but after watching her for awhile I stopped noticing that. The channel is Jenn’s WW Journey. She has lost about 140 lbs and she counts points but she is more about protein, fiber and she’s just a little different and I mean that in the best way possible. Anyway, if you have a few minutes watch one of her videos. She post 5 videos a week so it won’t be hard to find her. If you do let me know if you think she can help.

Weight Watchers is actually the most successful of all the commercial diet programs. About 1% of losers keep their weight off after two years. So, in all honesty, the only thing which does work is lifestyle changes. For me, it was no snacking between meals, eating a homemade properly balanced meal, and halving my portions. I added in a daily vitamin tablet along with a for liver oil supplement. And I just kept with the routine - takes about three months for new habits to stick. In the end, I lost over 100lbs and ended up in normal BMI. Trust me, NOTHING feels as good as being a healthy weight. Please stick with it. Give yourself a year and stop beating yourself up if you don't lose enough weight one week! It took me three years.

Oh and the only foods which you should avoid are processed and ready foods. They are either too small a portion to fill you so they can keep it lower calorie ... Or, they are hideously packed with fats, sugar, salt. A homemade Italian meal can come in at 500 calories - most ready made, processed versions come in at over 1000. And, I kept a box with a few favourite small cookies in and agreed with myself that if I wanted a treat, then I would make a coffee and sit quietly with my drink and one biscuit and enjoy for fifteen minutes.

No point in my giving you nutritional info as you obviously understand all of that .... But, what I will say .... Forget what you've done in the past because it it was going to work for you then you would have already lost the weight .... Personally, I walked away from dieting and decided just to eat healthily by change one small thing every few weeks. My first thing was I usually had two slices of toast for breakfast and I changed it to one slice plus a protein. All the little tiny choices suddenly started to work. Good luck!!
