- “NOTHING FROM MY GENERATION SPOKE TO ME UNTIL I HEARD PUNK ROCK. IT WAS RAW. IT WAS ANGRY. IT HAD ENERGY AND ANGST. IT WAS EVERYTHING THAT I WAS.” - If it weren´t for Punk Rock, Erik "Smelly" Sandin might not have played drums-or any instrument at all. But in 1981 his neighbourhood punk band needed a drummer, so 15-year-old Erik became one. Two years later, he and two Los Angeles friends formed NOFX, which would go on to become one of the most successful and long-running punk bands ever.
With his skittering sixteenth-note hi-hat patterns, clean snare rolls and speedy double kick patterns, played with a single pedal, Erik manages to be the solid foundation of the band´s sound even at NOFX’s light-speed tempos. In our interview Smelly tells us how he sees his role within in the band and explains his current set-up.
Erik plays Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple in Red Autumn:
22" x 18" Bass Drum, 12" x 8" Tom Tom, 16" x 15" Floor Tom
14" x 5.5" Brass Snare (RRS1455).

"I don't need to be 'the lead' anything. I build the building for them and let them play."
Sums up Smelly's personality perfectly, so humble. Doesn't take enough credit though, the foundation he creates for NOFX is everything
Nailed IT !!!
He's the glue that holds everything together, such a great drummer in a great band 🤗 🥁 😘
Smelly is such a hero to me on a personal level. When Backstage Passport first aired in early 2008 I had just quit drinking and was struggling a lot, but seeing him talk about his addiction and being sober for 14 years (at that point) made me feel a glimmer of hope. And I just realized that I recently turned 14 years sober myself.
Congratulations on your sobriety!
The dude is just class. The backbone of that band. Love the book. Love that tried and true NOFX beat!
The NOFX book was really good too. Full of interesting stories.
it's really smelly's book
It's not like he came up with this beat lol. The Monkees did it in the 60s.. Minor Threat, Discharge, Motorhead.. All way before NOFX..
@@dagmerrie nofx just made it more solid than anyone. Smelly’s footslide is undefeated
Smelly is one of best drummers ever. "The Decline" is proof of that.
Gotta love Smelly the dude is a machine. Totally underrated.
Not by me.
Modest as hell. I'm sure NOFX would of fell apart had he left the band or something.
Supersolid
@@denniswoycheshen They went through two different drummers in the one year Smelly left (way back in the mid 80's). Dude's irreplaceable at this point.
Him and Herb from Primus are fuckin killers
he's a beast, good thing he quit heroin
in retrospective, Top3 best things that ever happened to the band
1. Smelly being sober
2. El Hefe
3. the 90s
xD
Limbofish Nirvana’s Nevermind helped everyone punk band too
@@Limbofish wow smelly best drummer in punk REALLY!
Never knew!
Most people don't even realize how good how a drummer Eric is.
This guy is a brilliant drummer, seriously underrated
met smelly backstage in Calgary on the First Ditch Effort tour. Dude signed my book and chatted for a few minutes, super cool cat, my fave drummer since I was 14. NOFX is AWESOME! !
I love the way he does the fast punk beat and snare rolls...so clean!
Best drummer in punk. And a super nice guy too
bill stevenson or derrick plourde would get my best punk drummer vote. erik sandlin is kinda like ringo, just fitting the band so well makes him a good drummer by itself.
yeah well said.... everything he plays is spot on - perfect for what the guitars are doing. every fill, roll, time change is spot on. nothing more or less is needed
Great drummer, very nice guy and approachable too. But Jordan from Strung Out would get my vote
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Byron from Pennywise. Totally underrated punk drummer imo.
I wanted to. he's a beast.
Smelly is one of the few drummers that makes people think he uses double pedal when actually.... he uses just one. Not too many people can kick that freaking fast.
The old heel toe punk rock. It’s so hard to do, for me at least
@@crujones4046 you ll get it one day!!! triplets on the bass drum are fun!
I remember the whole double pedal travis barker freak out. Honestly i have no problem with a double pedal but you damn well better know how to use it. Its not to make drumming easier (which is what most drummers use it for), its to make certain kick rhythms possible which otherwise wouldnt be.
@@crujones4046no slide?
Eric Sandin A.K.A Smelly my drummer punk hero!!!
I met him once, great guy. Took the time to chat.
I build the building and let them play...love it!!!
Love Sandin man. The true hero of NoFX
Thank for watching!
This guys life story is my inspiration
This guy is a living legend. Completely underrated and an absolute inspiration.
NOFX one of the many few that have kept it real, unlike today's list off sellouts
Listening to the NOFX audiobook, his parts made me laugh out loud so many times. Not because his stories were funny, but because I was a troubled and idiotic teen myself and I could totally understand why he made many decisions. So many times I stopped the audiobook, took off the heaphones and started screaming "What the fuck were you doing smellyyyyyy" hahaha. This dude was a mess for so many years, yet I am extremely happy he became sober and has his life under control. Smelly, even if you dont wanna hear it, you are a fucking hero and role model to me, knowing how hard it is to beat addictions. After listening to the audiobook for 11-12 hours it feels to me like I am a part of the NOFX circle of friends. Highly recommendable book. After finishing the book, I immediately bought tickets for a NOFX show in May 2019, although none of my friends wants to go with me, because they think that NOFX sucks live ^^. Yeah ... no shit, still, gotta visit my bros and see them live again, even if I go alone. I surely will have a blast!
I agree the hepatitus bathtub was secretly smellys book
The only guy in NOFX that doesn't f*ck up live.
yes Sir. some of my all time most loved music is NOFX! I switch to air drums with him all the time! so clean. definitely one of my favorite drummer. thank you for being functional Eric.
Smelly is the real dreamed drummer for a bunch of bassists/guitarists!!! What a good professionnal he is... So underrated!!!
Love it Eric!
For me he was and always will be the drummer number one!!! So fast, so clean - excellent!! 😎👊🏻🎉💘👌🏻😍🤗🏆😘
epic!.
what more can you say.cheers.
Love Nofx, love Smelly, love all of them. Wish I could meet these guys.
Ur approach to drumming, not the act itself, but where a drummer fits in a band is beautiful man. One day i will play double pedals like you
The humblest man in the world and in NOFX
Your tone is incredible sir 🙏🏻
very nice, I would love to see the whole footage from that interview. I can tell it has been cut down big time. good broll tho. that brass snare sounded so good
On the Rushmore of drummers. And a completely solid and humble guy.
He's the OG triple double OG of the band!
That last phrase is sooooooo important. Love this dude.
I don't know why ithis took me so long... Erik is one of my absolute top favourite drummers of all times!!!:) Hello from a dude in Norway:)
I have this man to thank for getting me into drumming oh so many moons ago
Humble statement at the end!
damn I like this guy, got the right attitude, I just like it. The king of heel toe
Love Smelly so much
Punk Rock Is Not Dead!
It just smells funny
Still playing Yamaha after all these years - when I can find the damn time
wicked drums,and a awesome drummer.
Even after a shift in my musical taste going from skate-punk to grind/deathcore, even after listening to aliens like Ken Bedene, Kevin Paradis, David Diepold, Anthony Barone and so on, this guy is still my all time favourite drummer. I'm turning 37 this month and since the first year of high-school my heart have been speaking in NOFX beat. I love you, Smelly.
A random Italian dude.
great great great drummer!!
A legend.
Love u Smelly hope all is well!
He's one of the best, and my favorite.he isn't doing Anything that reinvents anything, but his style of playing is him,and he can go fast and hard for a long time effortlessly. I dunno if his wife would agree on that one though,
My fav punk rock drummer.
He looks like James Hetfield in 1991, except the hair, plus Smelly's cooler
you don't even break a sweat. love the band.
Favorite drummer of all time
Very apt tune for smelly’s interview...
Incredible talent . So underrated .
He's the man!
He has to be in the top 10 of all drummers. Way too solid drummer ! ❤️
My favorite drummer.
PunkRock god, important influence... Das them 5 years after civil war in sLOVEnja. Awesome concert, NOFX4life! Cheers
*saw
And best regards from Austria! ✌️
What a guy!
Amazing Yamaha 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Smelly might not be the lead drummer but he’s the best drummer in nofx.
i love you smeeellllssss
Dude is rad AF
Incredible drummer. Incredible person. “I don’t need to be the leading anything” I build the foundation and let them play
Phenomenal stamina. I have not seen him have an off night. Also I saw them a few years ago on the Punk in Drublic tour and he was early 50’s then and didn’t miss a beat.
Love me some Smelly
Nice guy.
My band favorit.......NOFX
He is insanely good!
SMELLY IS AWESOME!
best drummer ever
Beast
King
FRONT MAN! in the back yo... Fuck'n Smelly IS NoFX
I always thought he played OCDP!! Great drummer.
yes he used to but not anymore now
I fucking love Smelly. Honestly, he's a lot of the reason I ultimately got into punk rock. Listening to and playing along to NoFX showed me that d beat is actually and literally the most fun thing ever. XD also, his jazzy solo in California Drought is a testament to the fact that he may well be the greatest in the genre if not the world.
I still tell my drummers to drum like Smelly
Nice guy....(Erik "Smelly" Sandin)
The song playing in the background is about him, actually.
👍👍👍👍👍
Best punk drummer
He's a great drummer. him and dusty Watson are my two favorite drummers in punk rock and really just overall. Eric is tight and solid with a great punch you in the gut and Watson is just tight as fuck. I wish I could play drums like that.
Y'all should use some of the more killer drum pieces in the background. Like I love you more than I hate me...super tight
anyone knows what's the mic they use on the overheads and hi hat mic, I think they are the same they use on the guitar cabs along side the sennheiser 609 or 906
wish i could find a video about his drumming techniuqe and maybe a lesson
Fucking love Smelly, what a guy 😍
I wish more drummers understood what he said at the end
First time I heard NOFX I thought cool dbl bass in punk haha wrong fastest foot in the west I LOVE SMELLY!!! 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼
He plays Yamaha, interesting, I've never really dug Yamaha anything. I remember I went to a Yamaha store once and I hated the vibe I got from all the employees. They were all dressed in nice suits, and I was looking to buy my first real electric guitar. I talked to 2 people, both of them were so pretentious about what genre I played, and what I wanted out of my guitar and talked down to me like a child. I was 14 at the time, but I wasn't a fucking idiot. What I was looking for in a guitar hasn't even changed that much in the 7 years since, despite primarily being a bass player for the past couple years.
Played OCDP for years and years, I think he just recently switched. Not sure how those endorsement deals work or what the incentives are for switching from one company to another.
Sam Haas he play yamaha now bcos yamaha give him more profit deal than ocdp haha
Yamaha make good drums, not really good guitars or anything. But definitely make good drums.
@@KingBlonde good drums and great keyboards and workstations
Smelly START UR OWN BAND!!!
bro I feel so bad for him a lot of people don't recognize him when he is with the rest of the band 😭
there's zildjian on yamaha commercial video, cool....
Bataraja Harahap what kinda cymbals is he supposed to have? when you play in front of huge crowds like NOFX you wanna have the best sounding cymbals lol
My DPW brother
Smelly you rocks dude. Consider a winner. Kurt lost this battle
smelly rules
I wanna be Erik Sandin's stand in
Yamaha Power V was my first kit. It was my reward for getting out of the 8th grade😂
Favorite band ever. Tattooed them on my leg. Look at the profile pic.
Herb Reathstinks!
awesome drummer just wish he would throw in some more intricate parts at times but he fully rocks
Thats been a common complaint of critics, he’s a one trick pony. I’m sure he’s capable of more intricate parts but by god, the few things he does he does to absolute PERFECTION!
smelly is the best
smellys the best
