  • The 40-hour workweek was established in 1940.
The economy has changed a little bit since then.
In my view, the financial gains from new technology and increased productivity must go to workers, not just to the people on top.

In 1940, a single worker earned enough to support a family with the wife raising children and teaching them morality. Since the 70's it took two incomes to support a family, both worked and their combined pay was about what one earned in 1940 adjusted for inflation. Older bullies raised the younger kids because school let out at 2 and no parent was home until 6. Today working people can not afford kids even with both working. Replacement humans have to come from welfare mothers or immigrants. Does this look good to you?

You had me till the end. Why are we not expanding the welfare to everyone. Clearly each worker essentially makes half what they used to. But you have conservative minded people that made the restrictions so tough, only someone with a child and no job would qualify.
And we don't give fed aid to migrants so that doesn't really feel relative but point is.
Look at the problems, we have loosened all regulations, tax the lowest in history. Companies take advantage of us. Pay attention to that, not the ones that are the only ones who qualify for help at this point as they try to cut even more aid to the masses.

    • @willieverusethis
      @willieverusethis Месяц назад +5

The real shift began in 1980 when Reagan broke the air traffic controller's strike and businesses declared open warfare against workers. Trickle down economics claimed that if we gave greater and greater tax breaks and bigger subsidies to business then everyone would be better off. Both Democrats and Republicans bought into this and "freed" corporations from taxation, while also pushing through free trade agreements that sent jobs to poorer countries. Part of the deal of free trade was cheap labor, whether it is overseas or immigrant labor here. There is still no overtime for farm workers, and children are allowed to work in the field all day in the US. It's to keep wages down. Children are cheap. Soon it will be not only men and women in the workforce working for pennies, but all of their children as well. And people will still be terrified of "socialism" and vote against taxing the rich.

Well, let's look at how the average Russian lives:
the average annual salary in Russia is around 1,240,000 RUB, or approximately USD 14,771. It should be noted that this figure varies greatly based on factors such as geography, industry, and employment role.
According to statistics, the average area of an apartment in Russia is from 55 to 65 square meters. At the same time, on average, there are 25 square meters of living space per person in Russia.Dec 14, 2019
      That's about 700 square feet.
The top surgeons in Russia make less than 90k annually usd
Who would want to live in a tiny apartment making squat?
Maybe if you can get a brain surgeon to agree to a 90k annually salary and live in a 700 sf apartment, and pay a 20% VAT tax.
What is the median salary in Russia? The monthly median salary in Russia is roughly 94,900 RUB, which is approximately USD 1,130. This median statistic is especially telling because it implies that half of Russia's working population earns less than this amount, while the other half earns more.

You won't be able to move around to buy anything or engage in any activity if your health isn't good, regardless of rising prices. In addition, working longer hours means spending a lot of time with toxic coworkers, which is stressful at work and bad for one's mental health. Then, imagine this: if you spend several hours performing a hazardous job, guess what? In other ways, it damages the body and increases stress. Starting a side hustle that's not stressful is the best course of action if the person needs that extra money, along with a 32-hour work week if prices rise.

I brought up this bill to a boomer a while ago and he said, "Whoever thought that up hasn't worked a day in his life," but to that I say, whoever is against it hasn't worked a day in the past 30 years. You used to be able to afford a house, two cars, and a family on one salary, they used to give out pensions to employees, and you used to be able to expect to retire some day. Not anymore.
I hope and pray for this bill's success. It would do so much to relieve the stress I'm sure many employees (myself included) are feeling. With a 32-hour work week, more people would be comfortable having children and raising a family. They'd be free to care for their elderly parents, get more exercise, work on personal projects, take care of their mental and physical health, etc. It would reduce the amount of commuting and therefore bring down pollution. It would employ more workers and make workers more valuable. Please let this pass.

I retired early at age 54, got the hell out of America, and moved to the Philippines. So, I don't really have a dog in this fight, but if employers just compromised and at least cut the work week back to 36 hours, employee morale and productivity would go up. I had a college professor in 1987 who predicted that in the future Americans would have a 32-hour work week because of the increased productivity brought on by automation and better computing. There is one thing he didn't count on: increasingly rampant corporate GREED.

I have older coworkers who would benefit sooo much from this kind of change, and yet one guy who's both working two jobs and is most outspoken about this claims that people today are lazy, entitled, greedy, selfish, etc, and glorifies his life of working 60+ hours a week just to be able to afford a place 2 hours away from work.
Like it's ridiculously sad how indoctrinated people are to the old work culture, to the point where they'll gladly suffer if it means they get to brag that they don't take full vacations or sick days, and label people they disagree with as parasites to the economy.

I worked at a warehouse that bought parts from manufacturers to resell to people. Many of the parts we received were already repurchased, labels changed, price increased..just like what we did. Some of the customers were also warehouses that did the same thing.
The incessant need to have people working 40 hours is what creates pointless middle men like that. Instead of going from manufacturer to customer, it gets transported across the freaking country 3 times, plastic and cardboard waste is generated, prices get inflated, and parts get damaged. There are SO MANY of these kinds of businesses in all kinds of industries. They are completely unnecessary, and they only exist so people can have jobs.
Stop making pointless jobs that inflate prices and waste resources. We can be better than this.

The problem is Greed, at the top. Workers get $15/hr they hire less workers and raise product prices. Why? Greed. So even if you did have less hours for the same amount of pay, which I agree with. The people at the top will make sure everyone knows why it's a bad idea because they will downsize and raise prices. And that's how they have been fighting back against change. Because they are greedy and they don't give a fuck about you or me or anyone working below them.

    • @Hepglon

Yes, as when we were farmers we worked 72 hours a week. So there has been decline historically which has been stuck. Shaving off Friday makes the most sense IMO. But, compromise on this would be to promote it as an option both for employers and employees. Because the best workers will obviously be attracted to the 32 hour jobs. Whether the benefits are the same might be another question though? Which again would be up to the employer. But unions can push for these things also.

Many people would argue that worker productivity has went down in recent years. We have less people working in essential jobs while the people who are working has some sort of physical and/or mental issues/disabilities that can and has hinder the amount of work they can get done on a daily bases (which to be clear is NOT their fault). We live in a time that demands for goods are higher then they ever have been thanks to higher population and increase greed of those in 1st World Nations. It would only make sense for robotic and AI technologies to fill in the roles of those jobs so to better meet those demands. Why pay us, the low and middle class citizens, more money when it would be cheaper and more profitable to invest in robotic and AI technologies?

Although the pay of course could be a whole lot better. Beyond that there is never enough people employed to fill all of the shifts. Plenty of the people I work with put in loads of extra shifts and overtime because of it. Unless you can make more people not only willing but capable of the work this suggestion cannot happen.
