AIPAC has all but purchased most of the politicians in our government. the questions i would like answered is why are the israeli manipulation team not required to register as foreign agents? why are they allowed to use funding to manipulate our government? how is it that we can criticize our own country but criticizing israel is suddenly antisemitic? how is being against zionism (which is, by definition colonialism) is now antisemitic? why are so many in our government acting to impede the free speech of so many young people who are against israeli atrocities? do we, old farts, not remember when we were against vietnam war? how do israeli's not see that the actions their fascist state takes actually has caused the problems there? muslims and jews lived peacefully together until the state of israel was created. it was the christians who had problems with the jews not muslims. our government's hypocrisy is never so obvious than when dealing with the near east.
Two words: Holocaust and Evangelism. Holocaust because the immense guilt of not doing enough to prevent it and thus prevent the deaths of 6 million Jews and 5 million others led the US to sympathize overwhelmingly with the Jewish population at the expense of everything else. Also, evangelical Zionists support Israel because they think that bringing the Jews back to Palestine will bring about the second coming of Christ.
Oh, and then there's the money and the geopolitics. Israel stands against the Islamic states of the area, most notably Iran, and is technically a democracy although it hasn't properly operated that way for years. Tons of celebs and politicians have dual US-Israeli citizenship... You get the deal. It started because of the Holocaust and because of rightwing religious conservatism, but it's continued because that's just the way it's always been in the minds of most people.

The danger is in how easily these protestors can be co-opted by the right wing. How many John Walker Lindhs in waiting are there out there. I'd like to see us pull virtually all "military aid." It's the equivalent of going into South Central LA during the height of the drug wars and selling machine guns to the Crips and Bloods.
