- Panasonic's 2nd L-mount f/1.8 lens has arrived! It's the Lumix 50mm f/1.8. It's the 2nd full frame 50mm lens from Panasonic and it is a lot smaller, lighter and much cheaper than the excellent Panaosonic Lumix S Pro 50mm f/1.4.
In this video, we are going to have a look at this new lens and also do some compairson with the S Pro 50mm f/1.4 and see which maybe the better lens for you.

24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm f/1.8, which one is the one you want to buy? For me, it's definitely 35mm f/1.8!
Or is there any f/1.8 lens outside these four you really Panasonic to make?
I hope they release a 18 or 16
I'll definitely be buying this 50mm (and eventually the 24). I'd love to see a 20mm f/1.8 - would be great for astro.
35 and 85 are interesting focal length but I hope they also release either 20,18, or 16mm as well.
I’m waiting for the 24mm 1.8
I have the 85, and have preordered the Sigma 35 f1.4 because I wanted a wide prime and don't know when the Panasonic will turn up. I'll probably also pick up this 50 when funds allow, but I want to compare the 85 to the Sigma 35 before I decide.
Thanks for the review! After the release of the 28-45 lens, it became very interesting to compare it with the Panasonic 50 1.4, now they are about the same price, but is it possible to replace the Panasonic 50 pro with a new Sigma 28-45?
Perhaps a strange comparison of a transfocator lens and a fixed one...
Thanks for checking for coma!
Looks to be a Great lens for closer Milky Way shots and/panos!
thank you for the video but why don't you also test the AF on the 1.4? I was expecting for that section :(
i already own 50mm f1.8 but unfortunately it doesnt attract me in terms of colours and bokeh.. does upgrading to 50mm f1.4 will worth the quality ? some websites offered this lens for around 900-1000 usd for used lens.. if money and size will not be a problem , do i expect special leica like colours and bokeh from 50mm f1.4 ? thanks
I'll definitely be trading in my 85mm for this one! After having most of my gear stolen it's nice to see some affordable options to help start filling the collection back out
Oh trade in the lumix 85 1.8?
@@TheRealRichardWong yup! It’s a decent lens but 85 is just a little too narrow for my tastes
@@WorkingTitleVP 85mm is perfect for me but i find there's some CA with it, and dare i say softness (relative to an equivalent stupid sharp fujifilm lens). Idk if all the panasonics (50,24) are the same.
Do you know if Panasonic will release more s pro prime lenses? I want the 50 1.4 but only if I know I can complete the set with a 24,35 and 85 but they've taken forever to announce any.
While I am pretty sure more will come, I haven't heard of anything.but the guys are busy creating new lenses all the time so just a matter of time for them. I think the priority is to cover all the biggest gaps in the line up first
I would love to see a 28/1.8 with the same or better image quality as the MFT Leica-Panasonic 15/1.7
28 would be very popular choice
Seems like the 1.8 renders slightly warmer and contrasty images.
Which 50mm focuses faster for video ? The 50 1.8 or the 1.4 pro ? Which is more contrast ?
It's been a while i compare them both so to be honest i can't remember which AF faster. Neither of them are slow. but my feeling is the 1.8 would be more optimised for video
Hi Richard,
If i bought a 50mm 1.8 used for lumix s5ii… does the new pdaf system work with the lens?
Yes it works perfectly, you don't even need to update firmware. Check my S5II review and you can see some AF test i did with this lens.
hi, can somebody explain to me why at 11:55 the pan on the 1.8 is not smooth? thanks
it's just because i play back the video at slow speed to match the review scripts/other video
@@TheRealRichardWong oh so that happens when you say record in 30p but play back in 24p?
I can't remember how much I slowed down but probably like stretching 5 seconds of video into 10 seconds of playback time
@@TheRealRichardWong thanks for the explanation
I must say that I did it: I sold a Panasonic 50 f1.4 Pro and bought a Sigma 28-45 f1.8. On the one hand, such a replacement seems strange, but on the other hand, I suggest considering the 28-45 not as a zoom lens, but as a lens with a fixed focal length of 35 mm with additional zoom capability.
My impressions of using 28-45 are extremely positive. It was a really strange replacement, but having taken a step towards the unknown, now I don't want to think at all that I dared to do it. Sigma 28-45 f1.8 is a truly unique lens with an incredibly vivid picture. He manages to make the object three-dimensional even where there are no suitable conditions for this (cloudy day, shooting indoors with random light sources).
If we talk about bokeh, then it's "creamy" there, I don't know if it's possible to compare it with Leica, because I had no experience owning Leica, but the fact that this is one of the best L-Mount lenses from the Panasonic/Sigma lines, including even fixed focal length lenses The distance is an indisputable fact at the moment. I can't say that it is superior to the Panasonic 50 f1.4 Pro, but it can definitely replace it. At a focal length of 45 mm, it can quite compete with it, while being able to capture a wider viewing angle.
I also have Sigma 35 f1.2 in my collection, and to be honest, I don't like the picture of it. Yes, it is light-bearing, yes it gives a good picture, but it does not have any zest that clings. And in general, even at the widest aperture, it does not recreate objects as voluminous as it does 28-45 at the f1.8 aperture. This is really fantastic, I would never have believed it if I had been told that a lens with an aperture of 1.8 conveys the volume of space better than a lens with an aperture of 1.2.
In general, if someone had such strange thoughts like me about whether it's worth changing the Panasonic 50 1.4 Pro to Sigma 28-45 f1.8, I can only advise you not to be afraid to experiment, in my opinion it's worth it, I can definitely recommend it.
Awesome thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts with us
@TheRealRichardWong I bought two lenses at the same time: 28-45 f1.8 and 28-105 f2.8. My friends tell me that I'm crazy to buy two duplicate lenses, but I have to admit that according to the rendering of the image 28-105 is a typical zoom lens, even if it's damn good, but I really perceive 28-45 as A fixed lens with an incredibly beautiful picture and a side view, which is among Sigma/Panasonic. I don't see any equals.
Sigma recently patented the 45-90 f1.8 lens. If he is as good as 28-45, I think it will be an incredible breakthrough. This is the lens that many have really been waiting for, which can really be extremely versatile and unique for all tasks, unless you are a fan of wide-angle lenses.
I'm a fan of 40mm, so such a lens would cover all my needs from landscapes to portraits with excellent visualization and bokeh.
Thanks for the solid review, Richard! I just bought the 50mm f1.8, can’t wait to get me hands dirty!
@Prince Paks Awesome! Have fun and looking forward to see some cool photos from you!
@@TheRealRichardWong I hope you find meaning in what you do, Richard! Your reviews have always kept me excited and always reminded me why I started in the first place. You've been part of my filmmaker's journey. From being a kid who watched reviews for the cool factor of it all and dreaming that I will one day have this stuff, now I actually own a camera I saw on your website three years ago and fell in love with. You ultimately helped me manifest these dreams into reality.
God bless you, man!
My autofocus is not that good, and the lens is cloudy from being out of focus. The official website doesn't say anything. Sorry, but I didn’t find any way to update the firmware on my lumix lens 50/1.8. but I saw that there is firmware 1.1. The lens currently has firmware 1.0. s5iix camera
Do you have any opinions on differences between LUMIX S S50 50mm F1.8 L for $447.99, the LUMIX G NS043 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH LEICA DG NOCTICRON Lens for $1197.99 and the LUMIX S X50 50mm F1.4 LEICA Certified L Mount Lens for $2299.99 for the GH5ii? What about the LUMIX S S50 50mm F1.8 L vs the 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 leica lens at 50mm on a GH5ii? Thank you.
Hi there, some of those lenses you listed are for micro four thirds camera and some are for L-mount full frame.
Very interesting comparison, and the astro shot made it so easy to see the difference. But the f1.4 lens has a special quality that has nothing to do with conventional tests and I've read that it only shows up with photographers who know how to use it properly. (Not me, but I can see it when it's there) Leica lenses have that effect, and Leica collaborated with the f1.4 lens. It's an effect where the subject seems to be sort of three dimensional, and it feels real as if you could look around it. By contrast, other photos might look sharp and so on, but in the end, look flat, like photos really are when you print them. I think the official explanation is called micro-contrast.
Yes I have both, the f1.8 is almost as sharp (my sample is really excellent) but the 3D rendering is a bit better on the 1.4.
Excellent review, like always, And, thank you for the astro test shot!
Thanks for watching George!
I already bought the lumix s 85mm f1.8 … so 50mm it not that different …. But I will be waiting for 35mm f1.8 or 24mm….I always buy native lenses 💪🏻…. Thanks a lot for the review Richard 🙏🏻
Fair enough! 35 + 85 would be a great combo!
I was very struggling with which lens i should going to chose, but after again and again watch the pictures from differnet lens, the pitures taken by 50mm 1.4 is the only one could make me touch and almost cry.
what are you talking. the subject makes the picture, not the lens.
No the lens does, have an optically bad lens you have a blurry horrible picture @Kakaellsen
Blurry horrible picture? Some of the most famous photos ever take were on lenses that would be considered horrifically subpar by today's standards.@harryvlogs7833
Rich when I shot m43 and you recommended the mitakon 17mm that was the best and my favorite lens i used. I take your lens opinion srs
Thank you Ali! :D
Great video! How do you think this compares to the Nikon Z 50mm F1.8 S?
Oh sorry I can't really answer this until I have both lenses together to do some side by side tests
I picked up a new one for just over $350, what a great value.
very thorough review, thank you!
Thanks :)
The Sigma 1.4 50mm Art is a bit busy with the bokeh wide open, compared to the Lumix Pro. The Pro is out of my budget however. Is the 1.8 smooth and less busy like the Pro, or is it closer to the Sigma? Or maybe in between?
Hey TN, I found the Lumix 50 1.8 has pretty nice bokeh.
@@TheRealRichardWong Is it creamy, or busy and jittery? Thanks
What’s busy mean? Are u using it on the sii?
Do you have a video about how to have the best settings for using auto focus or could you make a video about auto focus settings? Thanks for another great video!
Great suggestion! I don't have one, but will add it to my list :)
Another fantastic review, thanks Richard!
Thank you Tony
Do you use a vnd filter for videos for your lense?
Sometimes :)
So glad you made this video, thank you SUBBED I want this for astro on my Leica sl2s I use canon eso r5 and Leica so this would be my second lens for Leica
Thank you very much :)
I bought the 50 1.8 and I am very happy with it !
it is very sharp better than the 20 60 of the kit !
in low light and bokeh advantage at 1.8
I watch all your videos, good luck Richard !
Thank you very much 💗
The fastest man on the earth! Sir Richard! 😂
Another great review.
Lol. Not fast.. took me three weeks to complete this review from start to finish
And thanks Glenn!
Where are these Panasonic? STILL not in stock in the USA.
Hi JK, I just checked with Lumix USA, they told me it should be in stock with some dealers , you can search the dealer using this page shop.panasonic.com/cameras-and-camcorders/lumix-camera-lenses/S-S50.html
could you do AF test again with lumix s5ii?
Not with these two lenses, at least not planned. My S5II autofocus test did use the Lumix S 50mm f/1.8
Can I put this lens on a Lumix G7 ?
No you can't this is a lens for the L mount system
Does it focus faster in video on the s5ii
A lot faster!
@@TheRealRichardWong thanks for the videos on the 50mm 1.8. Just ordered one!
Great review. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Which is better lens for video
I say 1.8. It's lighter and cheaper
@@TheRealRichardWong does it have IBS?
Good job on the comparison. How would you compare this to the Sigma 65mm F2?
Hey Hassan. Sorry can't answer your question as I haven't got a chance to use the 65mm f/2 and test it properly
A S5 and a few of these primes would make an excellent corporate video kit. Prime users who shoot weddings would find this very suitable, too. Add a 24-105 and almost everything for corporate, docs and weddings is covered.
I've previously used S Pro 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 for weddings/portraits and both great! but 35 + 85 would be perfect
Great video comparing them. I wonder if the autofocus improves on it now with the S5ii
another excellent review ,
Thank you!
Great review, Richard! Also really looking forward to the new 35mm f/1.8!!! I already have the 50mm S Pro f/1.4, but this one looks great too for a lighter alternative when I don't need absolute highest IQ.
Thank you Alain! yeah the 50 1.8 looks really good even though the 50 1.4 is surely the better lens in terms of IQ. Can't wait for the 35 1.8 but we may still have to wait a little while
My problem focus out
Hi Richard, it's great that you managed to do this comparison so soon, but, some of your pictures such as LP Gas tanks and buildings really aren't helpful at all and seem too clinical and rushed. To determine if a lens is worthwhile, some of us actually need decent pics of realistic subject matter and not someone obsessing over technical stuff.
Thanks for the feedback Paul.
I think Richard may simply be the wrong reviewer for you. There are 100s reviewers out there, some do real world, some do more technical reviews. Find the one that works for you instead of asking a reviewer to change their style.
@@jockturner1547 Yeah thanks for the tip, i did
This lens took forever to come out.
Haha I am waiting for the 35.. that one is the one taking forever 😭
f/1.8 vs f/4 is big difference. more than 2 stops in terms of light gathering power and also the DOF too.
Sweet
Nice but with a video comparison would be perfect
hi there, what kind of video comparison do you want to see?
@@TheRealRichardWong thank you for reply. I mean a kind of footage made with same setting, with both the camera, side to side. With different subjects, light condition, and to show also differences like dof, time of focus, and also an impact with a little grading.
I think this should be very useful. Cause these two lenses have a very different price, and I'd like to understand if it really worth it.
That greyish rubber is not looks nice and attract dust. Like an alien on the main body of the lens..... Regarding the new lens, for 0.25x price compared to the big one, I would prefer smaller one...
I agree the rubber attract dust easily. Don't mind too much usually, but makes it hard to have nice clean product shots
I can't help thinking that this 50mm f1.8 uses 67mm filter thread, is beyond Nikon's level of stupidity, almost on par with Tamron's level. Nikon made 50f1.8s over 400g, 86mm long, 62mm filter thread, launched at $650. It was way too long, heavy and complicated for an entry level 50mm. Tamron used same housing for 20mm 24mm and 35mm F2.8 lenses with 67mm filter thread. Their front glasses look comically small compared to the filter thread. Only 85mm F1.8 deserves 67mm filter thread and 355g. Still think Sigma's approach is more user friendly. Compact well build 45mm, high quality DGDN 65mm and 35mm, superb 85mm F1.4 None of them feels plasitcy on hand.
That sigma 45 has an aperture that is way too slow for a prime lens. I’m not going to carry around a prime lens that gives no aperture advantage over a 24-70
@@TheFraziers Zeiss sells a ZM 85mm F4 one of the best M mount short telephoto, Sony Zeiss Batis 135mm F2.8, near optical perfection.
@@frankluo230 they might be really sharp but don’t provide any benefit in low light or with shallow depth of field.
Sorry but the Nikon is a much better lens then this Panasonic
Pedantic but with fun... 1.5 feet...??? decimal description for an Imperial measure. :))
oh Graham which part? :D
@@TheRealRichardWong one point five is decimal so you should really say one and a half if refering to imperial measure as in feet. 😂
