I was very wrong! Appreciate y'all watching and supporting the channel. Let me know in the comments if there is another lens out there I should try! Im thinking the sigma 35 1.2 next
50mm is the king of lenses. 35 is no man’s land. 28&50 is better than one 35. And One 35 is better than nothing, but if you have other lenses then it’s really not better than anything. I guess that’s why 35 is the “if you could only have ONE lens” lens. In other words, “If you had nothing else, 35 is great” 😅
Funny you should make the "beginner" association with 50mm, since a lot of the old masters (particularly of street photography) favored 50mm. Bresson, Eggleston too I think. And I love the tiny XF35 f2, the small size makes it even more useful.
I feel the exact same way. I first got into photography with a 50mm, and I felt my window to the world was too small. I wanted wider, but didn't always like the perspective changes. Now 8 lenses later, and my two favorite focal lengths are 50mm and 28mm. If I could only have one lens, it would be a 50mm. I love photography, and can't tell you how much time I've spent on Flickr looking at different focal lengths. 35mm actually causes emotional upset in me (I know that's going to sound strange), but the angle of view is unnatural. I'll find myself wanting to look closer at a subject, then as I do it's as if something is missing peripherally in the photo, and suddenly an unease similar to vertigo happens. Then I remain agitated. It's a perspective that simultaneously shows too much and too little at the same time, almost like an uncanny valley angle of view on a 3 x 2 photo. It doesn't happen every time, but I am sensitive to it, and it only happens at 35mm. Maybe 35mm is better when cropped to a 16 x 9 aspect ratio for video, I can't say, but for photography it's typically 3 x 2 and 35mm bothers me. Our eyes actually see things at a 43mm perspective. So 50mm just gets you a touch closer (which is more interesting), yet at the same time is still very natural and relaxed. You can do anything with a 50mm. Since a full frame camera sensor is 36mm x 24mm, the widest you can go without a lot of unnatural perspective distortion is 24mm. 24mm is honest, and very relaxing, but a bit boring. It's very natural for architectural photography, and for a wide angle I would compare it to the feeling of normal (kind of like the 43mm our eye sees but for maximum information). So the 28 is a little tighter, and allows for better subject isolation, but still a lot of context in the scene. The 28 also shows less perspective distortion, especially for people towards the edges of the frame. Ideally, you wouldn't shoot people with less than a 35mm, but again I am just not a fan of that angle of view. So for me, 28mm and 50mm are a great combo. If you read this much, I hope you've enjoyed my musings on focal lengths ;)
I like that transition in the middle of the video where you hit the lens/camera. It woke me up real quick and got my full attention. Love your videos. You are always progressing and refining your craft. Thank you for another great video.
50mm is not just the nifty fifty. Its the lens choice of the most famous photographers in the history. In fact, its the lens that introduced photography on the planet earth!. The father of photography. Nothing can beat 50mm focal length value. Nothing can beat Lumix quality...
50mm is definitely a must have lens especially bc streetphotographers are always using 35mm or 28mm and with 50mm you‘ll get a different way of seeings things on the street and also for a lot a client and product work is better option that a 35mm etc. Nice to see you doing 50mm content! 💪🏼
Don't confuse classic street photographers with modern. I mostly use 85mm and just starting with 100-400mm street, lol. Every lens is great lens if you just love photography 🤷🤩 50mm hit the spot in 80% of my common street walks as it all depends on the city and street architecture as well. Never really liked 35mm but I'm having it and I experiment from time to time. It's all subjective as everything in life, haha
I had this, i upgraded to the sl 50 summilux. The 50 s pro is 90% there to the summilux. S pro has more depth, focuses really fast, its sharper, and more contrasty, i just like the rendering of the summilux for the overall picture better. S pro is really really mind blowing
@@Evrce My thoughts exactly, execpt I sold the Summilux and I prefer the S Pro since I use other lenses (85/135) for portrait. If I used 50mm only for portraiture I think I would have sold the S Pro and kept the Summilux.
I shoot with Sony and their 50m 1.2 sounds tempting but I feel similar about a 50. My thing is it’s either never wide enough like a 35 or never tight enough like 70 or 85! But it’s a really good focal length to master
Totally agree. I be begrudgingly bought a Viltrox 33 for Fuji so I have one but don't see using it unless pairing with another lens like 7 artisans 12mm, Viltrox 13mm (on preorder), or with the 18-55 when I need something faster for low light. But I have the Viltrox 23mm, 56mm, and 85mm so it will see little sunlight. Lol
50+ is great for capturing details, and also portraits of small aspects of the scene. If you like one thing that jumps out at you, the 50 will give you that without the distractions. You don't need to work a scene as much as with wider lenses, which is both good and bad. I over relied on the 50 on my world travels and missed a lot of context, because I just simply couldn't back up enough. Looking at you Tokyo. 😂
I’m 3 min into the video and just want to say keep using that 50mm lens man. Amazing shots. Actually one of my favorite lens since the last 15 years for me.
Hey Evan loving the videos a real inspo. I even picked up a Lego McLean senna model the other day 😌😁. But I just wanted to ask as I'm intrigued by what you use to do those vlog style talking to camera clips in your video?
Great pics evan. I was on your way too... in the past i tryed lots of 50s and never felt confortable. Then i bought the 35 (50 equivalent on fuji xt/xpro) 1.4 fujinon and ... yess i felt in love back with that lenght.... but still 35 (or 23 on apsc) is sometging more dinamycs. Thank you for your work here on youtube!🙏
Yeah, until recently after I brought a Nikon Z 50 f/1.2 S, I had avoided shooting with a 50mm prime for over four decades, after getting tired of using one back then for several years exclusively. However, it only applied to a prime lens and not the focal length, since 40mm is used frequently.
I think 50mm is my favorite focal length and I agree with what you said in the video. It's currently my least used lens because it's one of those cheap ones.
My Nikkor Z 50mm f1.2 S is permanently attached to my camera. It’s, as you said, the Swiss Army knife of prime lenses and the quality is spectacular. I honestly don’t see a need for any other lens for what I do.
You should've jumped on the 50mm train earlier!! excellent photos! Recently set up my online print shop after watching your videos and couldn't be more excited!

I personally own like 7 or 8 lenses and my Nikkor 50 1.4D is on my camera 90% of the time, the sharpness and image quality blows me away. I also only paid $200 for it, cheap doesnt always mean lesser quality.

When doing city, I want something I can put in my pocket (i usually shoot solo and was raised on how not to be a target). My go to lately has been a 16-35. That's my 3 lens do-it-all setup. I found the 24-70 too boring and replaced it with a 50 1.2. Sometimes I miss the versatility if I've only got the 50 on me, but if I'm carrying all three, it works great.

Lumix is a brand where you get great value for money. This lens is no exception. Can easily compete with overpriced Leica. Disclaimer is own Leica and this lens.

Boring Perspective (50mm not Evan :-) The "normal" lens doesn't bring anything to the party, perspective-wise. Traditionally it was SMALL, FAST and lightweight. For years my pro event kit included a wide zoom, tele zoom and 50 f/1.4. The question I want to be answered is why are today's 50s BEHEMOTHS? Boring Perspective (50mm not Evan :-) The "normal" lens doesn't bring anything to the party, perspective-wise. Traditionally it was SMALL, FAST and lightweight. For years my pro event kit included a wide zoom, tele zoom and 50 f/1.4. The question I want to be answered is why are today's 50s BEHEMOTHS? Nikon and Canon (still) make small 50mm f/1.4 AF-S or USM lenses that dwarf mirrorless 50mm lenses. Why are the Lumix, Leica or even Sony 50mm f/1.4 offerings SO DAMN BIG?
Are you sure it is a 2200$ lens because I dont think you mentioned it :D
Lol had to make it clear! Definitely not the traditional beginner 50mm
@@RanftEvan :D it was great humour!
Funny how large and dopey 50mm on 35mm looks compared to M/43
I love your videos, the photos came out BOMB!
I look like an opportunity for someone looking for an opportunity 😄😄
This lens is great! You can also try Sigma 45mm 2.8, can be great option for street photography. It is small, and a little bit wider. Comparable size to my m-lenses actually
If it ain’t a 35 on my camera it’s a 50. Have other lenses but just never use them.
No Way it beats the Leica 50mm SL APO Summicron.....
Actually, the S Pro is sharper. At F2 the S Pro is even sharper than the Summicron SL APO.
All of this 50mm SLANDER. I have 10k worth of glass and nifty 50 (and 100mm 2.8) are my favorite for portraits. Maybe a little to tight for your style generally but slow down on the nifty hate lol.
a what a strange individual re 50mm
