Great intro to the show, Matt. Glad to see you back and looking forward to more content. Now that both Alcaraz and Djokovic are out, what are your predictions for the tournament and who has the highest chance to make the final from the bottom half? It's shaping out to be a very interesting and competitive part of the draw.
Biggest problem for Alcaraz is media, pushing him, pressure him. He is a kid, need to grow up, also need expirience how mentaly to be stable. I am 100% sure that his loss at Olympics had a huge impact on his game. He is doubting himself a lot, but thats a process of growing up.
He relies way too much still on his coach Ferrero also. Struggling to come up with ideas on HOW to play Botic. Carlos lost this match due to strategic weakness and nerves
I don’t think Olympics loss has huge impact and indeed he denied such in yesterday’s interview. He is tired simply after such a long season and many battles. He already has achieved a lot this year.
@@wildcraneart5592you're 100% correct. I think also he's doing way to many promotions. He needs to spend alot more time relaxing in between tournaments.
@@wildcraneart5592 He needs to wean off from Ferrero's micromanaging. And going by his looks and gestures towards Juan Carlos yesterday, Carlos knows it. But then he is faced with a quality playing opponent who is agile and tactically smart.... and Alcaraz' mind freezes. He needs to grow mentally
After losing Gold in Olympics, he looked mentally shot... his loss in cincinnati to Monfils was a shocker... i was half expecting him to crash out of US open in the early stages..
@@anshathani1987this year Djokovic didn't Beat him In a legendary match until the Olympics like last year in Cincinnati So don't be dumb The GOAT destroys you mentally 😂😂😂 Alcaraz's great talent , he will go back even stronger
Father time is chipping at Djoko's legs, Alc will be fine; he did the same thing in 2023, no difference, except to say this year is better than last (2 majors is always better than 1)
The problem was this: Carlos struggled to come up with ideas on HOW to play Botic. He has a lot of technique, but often misses the strategic insights to know how to play an opponent who is intelligent, adapts and who is not defeated by the usual arsenal of power shots & dropshots. He cannot rely on Ferrero for this all the time. He actually seemed angry with Ferrero at various points during the match. Botic also played in God-mode, which didn't help Alcaraz
One of few things Alcaraz needs to figure out in his career, is bouncing back from tough losses. That is the only aspect of mental part of the game that he needs to work on. Last year Novak suffered tough loss to him in the final, and less than two months after that, Novak beat him saving match point in Cincinnati. You could see that loss really hit Alcaraz (he cried a lot) and he wasn't the same player for the rest of that season. Again this year, Novak had another devastating loss to Alcaraz in the same tournament. Again Novak, in about months time, bounced back and beat the man himself who crushed Novak's dreams at Wimbledon, dealing another tough blow to Alcaraz (again lots of tears). Part of the reason why Alcaraz is having hard time after these tough losses is because of the expectations people and media put on him. But I think it's mainly because he puts a lot of pressure on himself. Look at the interview after Olympic finals when he said "I let down Spanish people". He can be hard on himself, and starts to doubt himself. He needs to learn from Novak. Those two instances of mental strength, above mentioned, show also at the same time how Novak is tough and resilient. Probably because he learned it years ago after many tough losses to Rafa and Roger. This season he had fantastic year. But if he wants to be in GOAT conversation, if he wants to be mentioned in the same sentence next to likes of Novak, Rafa, Roger and other all time legends of the sport, he needs to replicate this year's result multiple times. But he needs to work on his mental game and learn to bounce back quickly, otherwise it will be really difficult. But, like you said Matt, he is only 21, he still got time to figure things out.
Also Novak always had almost whole stadium audience against him..Alcaraz never had that.Alcaraz is still mentally fregile. He has to work on that, but I don't think it's something you learn.Either you have it or don't.Novak was always mentally strong.
He actually said in his press conference that he was proud of his silver medal achievement and has not thought about that. According to Carlos, it wasn’t the reason it affected his game.
@@cvekiboy it was mental he said. He was battling with himself mostly and that’s what it looked like. His opponent played better today. It was hard to watch but he’s young. He’ll come back strong.
Ferrer does not appear to be giving him the same point-by-point coaching that he used to. Alcaraz might be trying to spread his wings and he and Ferrer may have a new communication relationship, where Alcaraz does not want his game micromanaged. There were times where Ferrer looked like he wanted to say something, but he held back.
I noticed that too. And I'm always looking at Ferrero micromanaging Carlos. It is a major weakness in Carlos' play, as he clearly still struggles to adapt strategically during the match. Ferrero may have wanted to help and he seems a controlf*eak to me, but Alcaraz is fairly weak still ( despite his ranking) in the mental department. He needs to learn to read the game himself. Needs to learn to trust his own instincts and decide which strategy or playing style to switch to. He will grow in confidence once he does. This daddy-like Ferrero mosquito is ultimately not making him a stronger mental player
This might be a problem for Alcaraz to solve....to be consistent year round.... He drops in form late in the year.... But he is too young still,in a couple of years he will maintain consistency
While it's def possible, that his mental strength is not high yet, many people don't understand, players, young as well, need to implement a healthy diet similar as Đoković has. It needs to be individual, because every body is different. When the matched diet is found, the body recovers faster, which also has a significant impact on the mental state and vice versa! Alcaraz played so many matches the last years, it's normal at some point that the fitness shots down. Remember Roland Garros against Nole? He had cramps, a simple resolution is salt and maybe some magnesium with it. I dare to say, that Đoković's healthy diet is responsible for 50% of his success, as it changed his fitness and his game tremendously. In the early stage of his career, he would very quickly get out of steam, which cost him much in his game. Of course his mental training plays a huge role in it as he mentioned it several times, but at the end, all might and strenght he's getting from the Almighty God, as he also stated it many times. Alcaraz has to learn from the wise man and has still a long way to go
Court speed: the players are probably wrong. The tournament heads meticulously measured every court to play at 42 ish. They even pulled court 9 from singles play because it was too slow. If you walk by, you’ll see it’s basically a practice court.
So what? It's totally normal to bulk up when you are 21-22 yo. ...... And experts determined that he didn't dope. So for media there is neither a reason to report this nor a reason to ignore it....
I have said it multiple times Alcaraz with his hard hitting and running down points so hard has injured his body...his body is already reacting and my opinon he lossed because has a injury and will start fading
Matt, Wanted to ask you about Sasha. Is there any part of you that drifts to the possibility that this tourney could finally be his moment? He’s played at a very high level for most of the year. He’s won big tourneys before by beating big players-just never all together at a slam:). There has never been a question about his game. Can his mind get it done finally? Or is he one of those guys, that until we see it, we just can’t believe in him? I think about that loss to Thiem in 2020 here. It was Thiem’s moment finally. Both players post-match on court speeches were unbelievable to see. It was so real from a human perspective. I loved your show when you called it the “poopin-pantzen” final 🤣. You had me laughing for hours bro. They both definitely were so nervous. I thought about this before the tourney as I had a feeling US Opens sometimes have some upsets. I didn’t expect Carlos and Novak to lose so early though. I just wanted to know if you think Sasha can finally get it done, or is there always going to be something missing mentally & psychologically for him to finally have that moment. Are we willing to push all our chips to the center of the table on him to get this done? Cheers big guy
Alcaraz still need to develop mental strength but then he is the new media darling so getting coddled won't help him at all. He should not underestimate opponents because in tennis, sometimes your opponents just played better tennis than you. it happens all the time when you are playing with the top 100 so there will be upsets like this. And in any match, either one played better or one played worse. The loser saying s/he played worse is not giving credit to the opponent who played better. Knowing that your opponent can play better despite you being in the top 5 will help you prepare mentally.
Absolutely true. But Carlos is also way too reliant on Ferrero. He seems to struggle to adapt strategically mid match, which is also a mental struggle he has
@@wellhello6618 That is why Novak said that all top 100 tennis players are good players but it is a mental game as well. Carlos needs to develop his mental game as he grows older.
Except that Fed was consistent while Alcaraz can miss a lot. He actually mixes between Fed and Nadal. When he brushes vertically it’s Nadal style and in my opinion he should use this more to stay in long rallies and he will be more successful, especially on slower courts, just like Nadal.
Amazing game, couple of things about Botic, he is coming from an injury and was even thinking about quitting tennis after Roland Garros R1 loss. After that he started playing challengers, not because he needed to but to gain confidence. He had some bad draws in R1 and said, even if i play well i lose. Long story short, confidence can do so much with a player.
Biggest upset in history? No...not at all, just the biggest over exaggerated headliner on YT. It was 100% on the cards if you watch tennis and ALL players, throughout the year. Alcaraz's mental strength has always been his achillies heal, especially when he's facing a player that is taking on the best shots he has to offer, absorbing them and once more, taking control of the point and producing an even higher level.
I think he meant upset in terms of the difference between rankings. I agree with your analysis. I wasn’t surprised. Alcaraz has two weapons: big forehand and good dropshots. Opponents like Van de Z if can deal with these weapons can beat him. They just try to extend the rallies and Alcaraz will be more likely to make an error.
@@tijgertjekonijnwordopgegeten The reason he beat Djokovic at Wimbledon is when he hits fast balls Djokovic couldn’t get to them. On clay at the Olympics Djokovic hit most of the balls back. Same thing yesterday Van de Z hitching most balls back that made Alcaraz want to hit harder, as I could see when he was grunting, but ended up making more errors.
My countryman the godkiller! I saw him in Davis Cup in my hometown, he looked so insanely different than today... Glad for him! Also sad Charlie lost, narrows the winners playing field a little too much shit USopen lol
This is the difference, for me, between Alcaraz and Sinner. Alcaraz is unbeatable from an athletic point of view. There is no tennis player in the world with his athletic skills. But mentally, Sinner is stronger. This allows Sinner to be more continuous and above all not to have lapses in concentration against weaker tennis players. Alcaraz, on the other hand, needs to face the stronger tennis players to give his best, while he is often unable to express himself against the weaker ones. (sorry for my english)
According to another tennis analyst, Novak said that there is no weak tennis player in the top 100. Novak said all have good techniques and skill to beat another tennis player in the top 100 but the difference is the mental battle. Seeing the track record of Novak, I guess he doesn't underestimate the top 100 tennis players.
@@blackkitty9054 Nooooo, it's very strong. but he is less mature than Sinner. If he improves his mental aspect as he grows, he becomes a perfect player. But it is not a given that it will improve. Very often when we see very strong 20 year old players, we say: "this one will become a legend in 5 years". Assuming it gets better, but it's not mathematical. Many players at 20 were very strong, had great promise, then they lost themselves
@@whatevergoesforme5129 I think Novak is the mentally strongest tennis player in history. Let's see if Sinner will be able to maintain this mental balance over the years.
we Don't hate Carios as a person! We don't like the media and people around him that put him on a pedestal as the greastest player on the planet! just because he won a couple of majors make you the GOAT! That comes with a lot of hard work and experience over the years! being popular does not make you great! Just ask Nole!
No. Don't see it as an upset. Carlos did not look like he was into the match. I was praying for the match to finish quickly for Alcaraz to go and rest. Botic is a good player though - better than 74 at times.
Upset also depends on the circumstances. For example, if Djokovic is defeated by his opponent today, I wouldn’t see the shock element either. I think over all players have not been that consistent since the pandemic. Maybe, I’ve been watching tennis for way too long.
Carlos' forehand was shaky - he shanked a lot of shots.also, the media put so much pressure on him- it is so evil how the media can affect such a great young player. But he is young and this is a learning experience .
@@petaruzelac2004 You said loosing instead of losing. So I made an arrow joke that he was loosing arrows at him because they yell Loose when soldiers let them fly. It's just a bad joke buddy not to worry much. 😂
Your Sinner take on preferential treatment lacks some context and facts: Every player can appeal the provisionairy ban within 10 days! It is explained in the notice they get, when you test positive. It requires giving awnsers to a set of questions and heavily relies on proofing the source of contamination. This is the same for all players! So if you are worried about Sinner being unfairly looked at. It does not help to say "clearly he got preferential treatment" while his process was followed by the letter and there is no proof for such a thing....
@@badmanskill1112 I am a Nole fan, from the Balkans, but lets be objective. I have no doubt Nole broke Alcaraz in the olympics mentaly. 21y old couldnt beat a 37y old with a peak performance. I couldnt believe my eyes how Novak played in that final. I think it made Alcaraz think a lot about his game. Novak is mentally the strongest athlete I ever seen. I could only put Schumacher and Jordan in the same category but Nole on top in that category just slighly above Jordan.
This lost is worrying as it similar what happened last year. He needs to drop some of other commitments and focus on mental work and strategy, not easy but... And build a wall against media.

All data scientists now. Look, I don't expect you to understand this but somebody else perhaps will: the fact that he was tested positive twice (in a time span of few days) combined with the earlier negative tests is very important as it allowed the 3 independent scientists that investigated this to conclude there was no decreasing trend (so the measured quantity didn't come from a larger dose before). Matt slips into this video at least one more reference to Djokovic as GOAT, even though the title of the video has nothing to do with Djokovic. Oh, wait, I guess it does, because it allows the monotonous GOAT-heads to say that the loss of Alcaraz, a “GOAT” rival-in-the-making (quotes added to show how iffy the whole concept is), is just another reflection of Djoker as GOAT. If Matt just wants to bleat with the crowd, that’s fine. But if he wants to have an interesting tennis podcast-which seems to be in doubt, given his increasingly erratic release schedule-he might focus more on how to be interesting and different, and not boring and the same as most of the others in the GOAT crowd.

Alcaraz will bounce back. The Sinner problem: Not doubting his innocence. But the way the ITIA/ATP/ITF covered up his positive results is unacceptable. It should have been publicized and he should have been suspended like any other player. Having hot shot lawyers just shows how unfair the whole system is.
No they should look to treat more players as well as they treated Sinner, not treat Sinner as badly as they have some other players. Lets not make this a zero sum game where everyone loses.
He's not innocent. Before anyone calls me a hater cos they don't want to look at things objectively. He tested positive TWICE. And WADA has listed that particular cream/spray that his trainer allegeedly used, on their website since 2020. So anyone who believes that a top player and his team who monitor every minute detail didnt know about it is laughable. And the story is even more ludicrous. His trainer had an open cut/wound and used this product (which again I mention has been listed on WADA's wesbite since 2020) and then proceeded to massage sinner's foot which also had a cut/wound. Which trainer or player will do a cut-to-cut or wound-to-wound massage? Forget athletes, no one in this world will do that. In all probability, he used clostebol and had this crea/spray ready as an excuse. And of course the ATP wont do jack. They can't afford to have their #1 player be banned and have his image tarnished cos they dont want to joepardise billions from his rivalry with Carlos for the next 15 odd years.

Sinner bulked up a lot, was complimented for that by tennis media and everyone ignoring it now is hilarious.
So what?
It's totally normal to bulk up when you are 21-22 yo. ......
And experts determined that he didn't dope. So for media there is neither a reason to report this nor a reason to ignore it....
@@BetaD_ it's normal to bulk up naturally, while he did it in a space of few weeks. And he failed 2 doping tests, ignoring it is pure bias.
I have said it multiple times Alcaraz with his hard hitting and running down points so hard has injured his body...his body is already reacting and my opinon he lossed because has a injury and will start fading

Frail mindset Alcaraz vs Fully Motivated Van De Zandschulp
Matt,
Wanted to ask you about Sasha.
Кофи брејк тенис. Say hi to mr. Goat :)

I can see the Federer influence in your forehand technique 👏
Carlos not as good on fast courts. Just lost to 37 year old Monfis in Cincy
@@johnlicciardello2389He just won Wimbledon, the fastest court.
@@tehatte That is true, but he doesn't perform well on fast hardcourts and for some reason the grass is different.
Oh man, were you there on Wednesday? I was there all day and stayed for the Novak match (only reason why I went). I was wondering if you'd be there.
He is a doper. He got caught twice not one.
Alcaraz is trash

This is exactly why I believe Nole will win more GS that people believe bc this stuff happens and injury happen, it's nothing new
Sinner and Zverev and Father Time are Djokovic opponents not just Alcaraz
Yep, burnout. Tsitsipas had the 22nd longest stay in the Top 10 in the Open Era, 237 weeks, through the pandemic hysteria.
Carlos made too many mistakes and took his opponent for granted. Wairing for the mustake was a his biggest strategic mistake.
I think he has the yips.. You can see the pressure in his face.
Being proBotic helps me stomach this loss... Will miss Carlitos lighting up the court
Nothing shocks me in tennis anymore.
No. Don't see it as an upset. Carlos did not look like he was into the match. I was praying for the match to finish quickly for Alcaraz to go and rest. Botic is a good player though - better than 74 at times.
It's an upset. When the world number 3 loses to the world 74, it's an upset.
We all know that those rankings don’t always add up.
@@tiahbawa5771 So what are you saying? What's an upset then? When does that happen?
Upset also depends on the circumstances. For example, if Djokovic is defeated by his opponent today, I wouldn’t see the shock element either. I think over all players have not been that consistent since the pandemic. Maybe, I’ve been watching tennis for way too long.
What did I say about inconsistency? There you have it.

Your Sinner take on preferential treatment lacks some context and facts:
Every player can appeal the provisionairy ban within 10 days!

Why is this such a big shock to people? These matches do happen. Hyeon Chung beat djokovic in straight sets in the 2018 AO.
Things that happen to a player once every 5 years or so are the definition of a shock.
Your best example is 6 years ago? Do you not think that's long enough to be shocking?
Carlos is not dominant on fast courts….
Botic is playing very well..
Why big upset ?? he got beat fair and square....
Please Matt sinner is his name, doping is his game. He got caught twice. Not one but twice.
This is why he was cleared: not because he said he didn't do it, but because his story matched with scientific evidence.
@@Pfaz001 I understand what you are saying. Unfortunately the cream massage explanation is far fetched. If he is clean what the point to fine him 325,000 dollars and deduct 400 points and why this important incidence does not come out until 6 months later. Guilty as sinner.💯👍🙏📞☎️

2)No automatic suspension like everyone else caught in doping or suspected to be doped.

4) No olimpics for Sinner cause we all now how strict WADA is a our doping. And no WADA experts were involved in Sinner testing. Only ATP/ITF (which are Italian like you)
5) low amounts of dope in urine like Sinner had usually mean that he was getting of doping when they caught him.
6) Firing his medical guy who supposedly gave him doping through massaging only after 5 months when it became news and not when he was caught positive on doping is also very, very strange, don't you think. It is a PR stunt too.

Thats happen when you think you lost something so important which isnt like olymbic although you did great job winning two grand slam and one of them against djocovic yet you feel
Down by losing against him at the olymbic grow up! You better not focus so much about playing djokovic just focus on the fu&&ing game
And he is western european, so of course they won't let anything happen to him.
@Norf.F.C.Zoomebut that won't happen.
Yeh, probably Alcaraz will bounce back, but not anytime soon. Last time he had a dip, it lasted about 8 months.
