His drumming is insane. It s not following any rule and doesn’t repeat at all, yet at the same time, it is so precise and not random at all. It is pure art.
@Enrique Vidal yea i know that s why I said it s precise. Still it s just unbelievable.
Neil Peart *is* incredible...... but Stewart floats MY boat
His brilliance is so obviously instinctive it's just not fair. Stuart's fills are decoys-the pocket is where his genius is on display, layered, textured, and thicc af.
What I love about tracks like this is, you hear that he's a human. It's not quantized to sound robot-like (!)
Exactly
Exactly the way drums should be played! His playing is great.
I think the little 'mistakes' or 'misses' make it even more fucking boss!
@@davidmarsh3674 , ' a wizard is never late. he arrives precisely when he intends'
Lack of quantizisation frees the soul. His style is extremely present, responding to and communicating with every point in the music.
what a MACHINE!
This bedtrack is better than some drum solos I've seen guys do.
That verse at 2:12 is just soooooooo gooooood
I love how it starts out sounding like the Only fools and horses theme tune 😁
3:32 SENDING OUT AN S.O.S!!!!!I’M SENDING OUT AN S.O.S!!!!!
Listen to that SNARE drum!
I'm a musician, I love music, and the only thing I have to say is: AWSOME!!!!!!!, GREAT STU
Listening close to the tom hits during the second verse… it seems like he has them tuned to the pitches of the chords of the song.. sounds like he is playing the chord progression along with the guitar/bass with those hits!!
It's wild how he hits on the ride the drums sound sharper in the recording with the music as in everything's tighter sounding not the playing but the sonic part. The playing is super tight what I'm trying to say LOL is the drums sound more Ambient and looser themselves isolated. Incredibly original band. In the 80s I didn't appreciate Andy Summers but man is he something else.
Beautiful to listen to. So complex and varied.
This is so shockingly modern
I like his "S.O.S." jabs at the end of the song
Stewart had a style all his own. He had his own rythms and beats too.
Brilliant--so very creative! I bought my first drum kit--black Tamas because Stewart played them. Thanks so much for these videos!!!!
Stuart Copeland belongs in the goat drummer conversation.
Anyone heard of the story where Stewart Copeland never listens to this song on radio until the end? Apparently he dislikes the end part of the song, always saying "Where was Andy (Summers)?! He always said 'Less is more'."
I was just listening to the end and thinking something similar.
...but in an interview he (SC) said this song is one of the very few in which he would not change anything at all...
Stewart Copeland is the best
Anyone notice he doesn't play the first snare hit going into the first two "I'll send an SOS to the world" parts?
There is a snare hit on that count when you listen carefully but it sounds like it ricochets
It's an effective trick by SC to add extra punch to the following part of the groove.
@@CarinaPrimaBallerina Yes, exactly. I did notice it had a different effect on getting that section of the song going.
Grande Stewart Copeland...!!
A syncopated drum rhythm 🥁
TMI, but I think I just reached some form of sexual ecstasy listening to this. I will never NOT love and be in awe of one Stewart Copeland's drumming.
2:10 Walked out this morning, I don't believe what I saw

Thank you for this. Great practice tool for me.
I love this drumtrack. best ever.
Imma toss my kit out the window with this one ☝️
the rolls? on the toms at around 3:30 is nuts!
Best musician of that band.

4:00 whoooo!!!!
Im so practicing & jamming to this
0:10 how does he hit hi hat, ride and snare at the same time?
Maybe he hits the hi hat and then the snare in one motion? Like he slides the stick off of the hi hat on the snare in one strike?
Hudson Music published a book recently about SCs drumming. He honestly mentions how he overdubbed some of the notes on the recordings. But any live version still seems to have the same energy and feel no matter what he hits at any given time.
He overdubbed some of the cymbals. I’d guess the hihat was first take with the rest of the kit, and ride was 2nd take. Still it’s remarkable how tight the whole thing sounds.
His hands are so fast.
Very good!))
Yes! ))
Hi High hat work is Otherworldly!
Just so we're clear, at least some of this was overdubbed, right? I mean, there's no way he's on the ride in the first verse with everything else in that groove. Stewart is in my top two, but even he doesn't have three arms.
Stewart Copeland is a bad motha fugga. Bet that dude got so much trim kicking ass with The Police in the 80's! Lol
Interestingly there seem to be more notes to me when I listen to the recording. I’m considering transcribing this and this will make it much easier
You’re hearing more notes probably because he overdubbed some of the cymbals. In the beginning for example you can hear him playing the hihat with the kit, and there’s also an overdubbed ride from a 2nd take. It’s remarkable to me that he was still able to make it all sound so tight.
Good job🤟🏻Can you make April wine -I like to rock
Unfortunately not. I do not have such tracks.
Damn.
This sounded way easier initially than it actually is its deceptively difficult
Thx for posting. Please post drums only for no time this time.
Reggae de Blanc is my favorite Police album...PERIOD! It caught them at their finest punk moment before going mainstream with Zenyata. And my favorite tune on Reggae is No Time This Time. That album has some of the BEST non radio tracks....Bring on The Night, The Bed’s Too Big and my second favorite song It’s Alright For You. Just a GREAT album.
Stewie is class
Gotta be overdubs with some of those imbricated hi-hat and bell parts or he is actually Doc Ock.
Stewart has admitted as much that they overdubbed certain parts. Doesn't change the brilliance of the drum part though.
Copeland would often run the hi-hat track through a delay effect as well.
I read somewhere that there was an album of covers of a bunch of popular songs that had this on it, and the drummer called Stewart and said something like "You're a beast; it took me hours and hours to play those bell parts on the ride and get the hi-hat going too," and Stewart said something like "...I overdubbed those".
@@wyssmaster Stewart is such a savage that he would say that to someone just to mess with them. Even if he didn't overdub the parts.
Check out a cover by a guy called Mike Michalkow doing a cover of this, he does all the parts that were overdubbed in one take he's a beast
Overdubs are heavy towards the end there. Either that, or he has an extra arm.
He seems to be playing highhats, snare, and ride all at the same time.
@@kevnarhi hat foot pedal
@@akmedia8206 stewart has said lots of overdubs on message .
