I have conchs in my saltwater tank, but they are only about a inch long and hide in the sand bed, and come out to eat they go back in the sand bed

It’s best to call them seashells or living mollusk. As all sea shells have different families and names assigned to each variety with in the families. A bit confusing! For now the whelk you are displaying is a channeled whelk.
The conch you showed and asked for help in identifying is what I believe is murex called the Florida Lace Murex.
    Hope this has been useful.

Those are beautiful shells!! It's fine to call them conchs; they're all conchs to us normal people.

Gig, I sent you photos of whelk pots we use up here in RI. I was hoping you would make a couple and catch a few whelk. The best way to cook whelk is to get the meat out of the shell and put it in a pressure cooker for 45 minutes. Make a seafood salad with shrimp, whelk, squid, lobster, celery, olive oil, hot pepper seeds, oregano, garlic, pepper and salt. Give it a try.
