    The system of programming your VCR via numerical codes printed in TV guides was called Video Plus.

    Yes, Radio Times and TV Times used to only to BBC and ITV+C4 respectively but late in the 90's Radio Times started doing all the channels.
    And yes, the Xmas editions of both are published and if you walked into a supermarket over Xmas you should have seen them as they usually were put in stands right next to the main entrance.
    And yes, although today there are far too many channels I also go through the Xmas RT (I usually get the cheaper alternatives to RT but at Xmas I get the Xmas RT) looking for the stuff I want to record on the PVR, some of which I archive to dvd or encode to MP4 if it's a HD programme.
    I also archive from streaming services but that's a bit of a faff, the TV is so much easier to archive from.

    Wallace and Gromit was the only program this Christmas I would turn the TV on for. If it wasn't for my good lady wife who watches the soaps I would not have a licence . Gone are the days when the BBC would do ground breaking documentaries. Likes of Horizon and other in depth programs is long over. Have a fantastic New Year and keep the channel going.

      W&G, Christmas Lectures, all the Xmas specials we know and love. There was so much it was hard to find the time. The problem is that instead of having just 4/5 channels we have over 100 plus the streaming services too. You remember the old days because back then you had a life. There was no internet or social media constantly draining your time away, no binge watching on netflix. Instead you had TV, just a few channels and what you wanted to watch or record, you did. When you didn't, you switched off and lived, you visited people or cooked or read or gardening or a walk with the kids in the countryside somewhere.
      Today however you have no chance. Too much to choose from, too little time, nothing good on. We have gone from finding stuff to watch and planning tye day around that, to just sitting there complaining about money and time.

    I haven't watched terrestrial TV in years - partly because the aerial has come adrift from it's moorings in the loft, and I can't be bothered to fix it, but mainly because nothing about the BBC, ITV, C4 etc., motivates me to do so. RUclips is the main channel - I also have Amazon Prime Video (though don't use it that often), and cancelled Netflix ages ago.

    You talking about the Radio and Tv Times brought back memories from my childhood in the 70's, we would always scan through them, circling all the stuff we wanted to watch, which often led to arguments when two programs coincided with each other - no vcr's back then! We only had 3 channels back then, but there was nearly always something worth watching - now we have a hundred or more channels and it's hard to find anything worth watching. Now what's that old saying? Quality over quantity? Something like that. Happy New Year Allen!

    The barcodes were for Videoplus. I had a Panasonic VCR which came with a sort of pen scanner thing that you ran across the barcode and then pointed at the VCR to programme it. It was a clever system but wasn't around very long. VCR programming using onscreen programme guides superceded it.

    I haven't watched any TV shows for a couple of years now, just use my TV for you tube and ps5. Still have to pay licence fee as wifey watches soaps and other 'rubbish' in another room. She's happy so it's fine. I'm almost 60 now and definitely turned into a grumpy old sod about 40 yrs ago. Tv Plus was the codes for recording, as I recall it was a bit hit and miss often chopping off the start or end of something, much better to set it yourself and allow 5 minutes either end for delays etc. Enjoy your videos even though I have no interest in repairing TV sets myself. I abhor anything Samsung and have vowed never to own another of their products, have been burnt by them too many times over the years. Happy new year.

    The wife bought this years Christmas tv magazine,can't remember which one, but it was 5 quid, I hit the roof at the cost of it, she only bought it to see what our terestrial TV was putting on over Christmas and the new Year, and what a load of rubbish was on, not even one fairly new film, which could be used as a carrot to entice anyone to keep a TV license, we have not had one for years since I fineally managed to wean her off all of the soaps. (the only thing we kept a license for) there is plenty of decent material out there for free on the internet to keep us occupied, even if the Government scrapped the TV license fee, it would take a massive change in our TV companys contents, to get us interested again.

  • @jkmac625

    Happy New Year. The numbers printed in the TV books were for Video Plus (VCR Plus in the USA). It was either integrated into the VHS timer system or in it's early days you could buy a separate Video Plus remote control that basically started the recording by sending the necessary infra-red commands to the video recorder when the programme was due to start. So it was independent of the built in timer but it did mean you had to leave the special remote control pointing at the VCR so the infra-red signals could be picked up.
    Video plus ended up being quite a good system once it was paired up with PDC (programme delivery control) in the late 90's early 2000's, as it could adjust the timer if the programme was running late. I remember something I was recording moving from BBC1 to BBC2 probably due to some major news or sporting event and the timer still worked correctly as the PDC system appeared not only to adjust the start and stop times but the channel number too. Not sure how it worked but it must have been linked to the teletext signal or something else in the vertical blanking part of the video signal as nothing was "online" back then as the internet was still dial-up. Something similar still exists today on Freeview, as both my Humax and Panasonic HDD recorders wait until a programme starts before going into record.
    The barcodes were probably for the Panasonic system as there were a number of their machines that could be programmed via a barcode reader and they came with a large plastic sheet with barcodes for setting the timer manually. On some models like the Panasonic NV-F77B the barcode reader was built into the bottom of the remote control but on older models such as the NV-FS200B the barcode reader was a separate remote control and looked like a fat pen with an LCD screen. Amstrad also made a VHS recorder with a barcode system for the timer but not sure if it was compatible with the Panasonic system, and I can only think of one model the Amstrad VCR6100 that used it.

    I can't put up with Ads any more for stuff I already have, don't want, can't afford! Gave up my TV license 4 years ago as BBC wre putting out dire content & too many quiz shows. I long for the days of quality drama, good documentaries. ITVX for 1 or 2 months to catch up with a few good programmes seems like a good alternative as the free version has about 25 minutes of ads every hour.

    Happy new year to you Allen! The fact that I would rather spend half an hour watching one of your fine videos (along with those of many other RUclipsrs) says everything you need to know about what has happened to mainstream TV. It has become fragmented and is trapped in a desperate race to the bottom for viewing figures. 50 years ago the reliability and sometimes (but not always) the performance of colour TVs were pretty woeful but there was good quality programming to watch on them. When the BBC had secure income and guaranteed viewing figures it could afford to take risks and produced quality output as a result. Now we have fantastic 4K flatscreen TVs with sometime precious little that is worth watching. Anyway keep up the good work and best wishes for 2025. Cheers Ian E

    With regard to video plus, do you remember something called PDC ?
    It was in the late 90s, and it stood for programme delivery control.
    Working in conjunction with video plus,it was a signal which was transmitted on bbc2 and channel4, but not the rest.
    The idea was, if the programme ran late, it would shift the start time for the recording to follow.
    Problem was, the setting button was on by default,and if you did the recording on a non pdc channel, it would miss the recording completely, without turning the feature off.
    My Sony SLV E8 vhs from 1994 had this.
    I cancelled the licence in 2002.
    You tube all the way, even if I had to pay.
    Free view is total dross.
    I have a radio times from 1974, and it only carried bbc 1,2 and radios 123 and4.
    I looked at the listings on the Internet, they were abysmal.
    Itv1 almost had all the same programmes that you would get on a normal weekday.
    Love your channel, it on its own is better than all of freeview.
    Happy new year !!

    • @EgoShredder

      Yeah I remember PDC, which was due to any sport that went into extra time and might affect the programme you wanted to record. So PDC helped to delay recording and start it on time etc. It was not perfect but better than nothing. I remember my Videoplus remote control for my AKAI, had a number pad rather than a barcode scanner. Once all the programmes had been entered into the remote, you sent the data to the recorder with a button press.

    • @jkmac625
      @jkmac625 18 дней назад

      It wasn't just BBC2 and Channel 4. I have a feeling it started first on Channel 4 then BBC1 and 2. It must have existed on both BBC channels as I remember a programme moving from BBC1 to BBC2 and the timer still worked as the PDC system changed not only the start/stop times but the channel too. But I can only think of one time that happened. ITV was still very regionalised back then so I think it depended on whether your ITV region used PDC or not. I was working in London for 12 months around 1999/2000 and I think PDC worked with Carlton/LWT but not sure it worked with HTV West when I moved to Bristol.

      @jkmac625 18 дней назад

      @@EgoShredder I had an AKAI and remember if you manually started a recording and it detected a PDC signal it would flash "auto stop" on the clock display. @@jkmac625 yes, possibly it was bbc1 too.
      I know that here in West Midlands, it began with channel4. It wasn't on itv central, and later when ch5 started it never came on it either.
      It was a pain having to remember to cancel it when recording channels which didn't carry it, as the programme would never record at all. I lost so many recordings this way that I stopped using it, but I kept forgetting, so for me it was a pain in the neck.

    The idea that broadcast tv has deteriorated significantly to my mind is not such a phenomenon as is made out. People are just more selective. Being brought up in the 60s people would just watch anything as tv was a very cheap way to fill an evening, there still was real low budget tripe then such has houseparty sticks in my mind and lots of US imports. Perhaps what has changed is that it is more manufactured on a production line as the broadcasters have closed all in house production down and now buy in by to spec by the yard. Can I have this much gardening, this much house fixing up…perhaps more risk averse too. 20 years ago we would have just stayed on one channel for the whole evening and moaned but still put up with it.

    It's bloody typical isn't it. My dad just rang me for a chat and amongst other problems, his fairly recent TV has failed. From what he says, it looks like the backlight has gone. He says it makes sound, but no picture. I told him to shine a torch at the screen and see if there is an image and he says there is. Its a 32 inch Panasonic LCD Smart TV, so a fairly recent one and my guess its one of the rebadged TCLs or whatever. I also think he didn't get a proper guarantee as he didn't buy it from a retailer. I'll have a crack at fixing it when I get a chance to visit him, but in the meantime I think his best bet is to get a TV from John Lewis. Nothing on TV anyway as far as I'm concerned, but he's 86 and still watches actual broadcast TV. I've been watching X-Files on 4-online and I watched blurays of Back to The Future trilogy over XMas, classic.

    @Allen, that PayPal address doesn’t appear to work for me. It finds somebody called Wells. Can you confirm that’s the correct person.

    I gave up with terrestrial TV 26 yrs ago. When ITV lost its franchise base, the uniqueness went with the regional companies. The BBC has become a vacuous and pointless broadcaster. I'd rather wait to purchase Wallace and Gromit and Wolf Hall on DVD. The only two things on the BBC that actually make the corporation slightly watchable. I spent more time reading and watching films on my 4K player.

    Even if you watch Now TV, you need a license if you watch anything that is being broadcast or anything that is being shown live. This includes Sky News. Check out "ChilliJonCarne" on RUclips. He covers everything you can and cannot watch if you don't have a TV License.

    TV is all propaganda now. It’s crap. Gave up my license 5 years ago and after a weeks anxiety I realised I was much happier. Wouldn’t watch it now even if it were license free.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder 18 дней назад

      It was intended to be propaganda based from day one nearly 100 years ago. All the psychological mind control research and inventions started around that time. Then if you look at the names of people involved in this area, and the names of the big Hollywood guys / companies etc, it all starts to form a pattern.

      Global media is owned by a handful of corporations, and all of them have one shared common denominator. The names of the owners are of the same ethnic/religious group.

    Clearly not a Wallace & Gromit fan (the only thing worth watching). Doctor Who is rapidly going downhill, so sad. Have I got news was just repeated clips. You have to buy a decent newspaper, if you want a good TV guide.
