"Special Stage" (Sonic 3) LIVE Jazz Cover // J-MUSIC Pocket Band

- Our live cover of "Special Stage" from Sonic 3, otherwise known as the "Blue Spheres" stage. Original composer believed to be Jun Senoue (individual composers for each track not listed), and this arrangement by Patrick Bartley.
DANG IT I HIT THE FREAKING STAR BALL AGAIN MOTHER-- Oh, sorry... This has definitely one of the most memorable special stages of all time across all video games, and is arguably the most beautiful music written for a special stage in history, as well! This song has such a simultaneous triumphant, yet nostalgic, and funky vibe to it - another classic home run for the world of Japanese music. When tasked with making a set dedicated to the music of Sonic the Hedgehog, the first thing I (Pat) thought was that we HAD to do the special stage music from Sonic 3... but this is such a daunting task, we really needed the right personnel to pull it off. Luckily, we got the greatest cats in the scene to make it happen! Our resident Mario (stuck in the wrong game), Jake Chapman, really blows it out of the park with his essential VGM-tinged sounds on vibes, and Norman goes full Knuckles Echidna on the drums without needing any music! I'm sure we all have nothing but fond memories of this special stage as a kid... Nah, just kidding, we remembered. There's a surprise for you during the ending of the song in tribute to those good ol' memories we all have... ;)

The best part about this is that everyone is so damn good, lol. At first you're like, "Damn, that's some smooth trumpet playing" then you're like "Man, what _sexy saxaphone!"_ then the xylophone guy nails a solo, then the drummer kills it -- y'all are just so freakin' good!! You're taking these classic melodies and turning them into magic \(^-^)/
I'd be sweating bullets if I were that bass player with my music blowing around like that!

That ending has me with the goofiest smile, just imagining the energy in that room. It’s so wild that somehow the drum solo at the end still sounded like the melody even though it’s all percussion. Absolutely incredible work here fellas.
Big shout outs to Jake Chapman tho, my guy is hitting the vibraphone about as fast as Norman is drumming and running that melody as well. I’m so blown away by all the spectacular talent across the board here. Bravo guys

The original composer of this song is named Yoshiaki Kashima. It was originally composed to an canceled arcade game named SegaSonic Bros, then slightly re-arranjed for the Sonic 3.

Love the song, but always hated playing the stages because I worried I'd get dizzy from them. I also hated hitting the star balls and bouncing back into a red sphere, forcing me to wait until the next time to go for the Chaos Emerald again.
This is one of the best videos on this channel! I don't play Sonic (I was kinda "Nintendo person in the 90s), but you guys nailed it in this song. I kept wishing to watch the gig in person (I almost applauded in the end!). This is by far the best game music channel in RUclips!

Awesome job by all of you here. MY favorite part is the expressions and motions of the drummer. And I love the addition of the Marimba as an instrument. Really added to the range of sounds.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles was such an iconic moment from my childhood. I absolutely love the way you all performed this piece, the hype and joy was positively infectious, you were all so talented here but I do have to give an extra shout-out for the drummer, we went off to another level there
