The SS United States still holds, and will always hold the record for fastest trans- Atlantic crossing by an ocean liner. I came to America with my family on her in May of 1958.
She actually still holds the speed record for fastest crossing from the New York to Southampton, and back. No ocean liner has ever surpassed her (I am not counting that hovercraft)
We should explore legal ways to stop its sinking... Oops, 'artificial reef' plan. The ship is too toxic for the environment, with oil, lead paint, asbestos, and more. It may be more expensive to sink her than to expropriate and turn her into a museum ship. The SS United States is a historic treasure, the fastest transatlantic ship of its time, and one of the last of its kind. Preserving her would not only protect our environment, but also honor a significant piece of maritime history. Let’s ensure that this ship is saved for future generations, not destroyed for a quick profit."
That thing is gonna sit where it's currently at and rot until the end of time there is no way they are gonna get that thing out of there the same way they brought it in
@Godzillafan204 still pretty dogshit, like I mean it's going to rust away quicker than if it were to be just left alone. especially if it isn't sunk in the deepest section of the ocean. it would actually be a better option to sink it in the great lakes for long-term preservation and if you value ease of exploration. so its not really better than just scrapping the poor thing
It's a pathetic commentary that the United States does NOT have a Ship of State, other than ships designed to KILL! I was on the first island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel the dreary, overcast morning she left her home waters behind an Ocean-going tug on her way to Turkey where she would be 're-born', which never happened. As sad as this is, better intact on the bottom, where her steel hull and aluminum superstructure will survive for another Century, then cut up for scrap. I have a few towels and First Class room service linens from my last time aboard.
They act like this is a good thing. Wish it could be preserved. I've been watching it for 7 years, can't believe it's going.

The SS United States deserved a better life. She still holds the speed record and was still never pushed to it's max.
we want her to be saved not a stupid wreck shes still perfect
“Yeah that is very Florida” she’s not wrong 😂
we dont want this:(
Nah this ain't good the ship shouldnt go out like this!
Gotdamn shame.
coast guard has confirmed it’s to unsafe to be towed
Shame...
This is a masterpiece of engineering? Wtf ?
why don't you just turn it in to a floating hotel
Its not as simple as you think it is but i also believe it shouldnt be sinked

How gosh dam stupid too sink such a great ship the we will never see again

All the asbestos in the vessel is already removed.
A historical and important American speed setting Ocean Liner is about to be sent to her death. What is this news crew smiling about?
Did bro really just say USS???!!!! Thats funny
When though?
Idk
Sad outcome because of some greedy wharf owners.!.
That thing is gonna sit where it's currently at and rot until the end of time there is no way they are gonna get that thing out of there the same way they brought it in
I believe the last part in that sentence
Wait USS?
No SS. Civilian. Not military.
such a bad end
Better than being scrapped
place only for divers but not regular people like the rest of us and we won’t be able to see the entire ship in all its glory compared to hotel ship

it could be an hotel just like the Queen Mary

They should sink it in lake supirior so it can be preserved by the freshwater and last longer than being in the salt water
