Crocheter who knows she needs to swatch and yet is possessed by hubris every time she starts a garment and doesn’t…and quickly regrets it. The cardigan I swatched for came out fantastic. The projects I don’t get restarted. And yet…

I love the seaglass colors you selected, and the color order!! I agree those were the best choices of the options provided. One thought -- if you want the gold color to blend in more with the other colors, you could just use a shorter band of that color so it doesn't stand out as a large band of gold. It would be be small highlight of a gold color. Thank you for these great videos!
I don't usually do a swatch because I don't do wearable projects. I do more blankets and things that don't get worn.

I was so happy when when you said you are leaning towards Megan's color order. As soon as you showed that swatch I thought it was amazing, the colors flow together but doesn't look overly structured. The first time I saw someone swatching in the round, I was amazed. I do swatch for all person-specific wearables but not for caps, scarves, and other one-size-fits-most items. I learned by swatching that I am a loose knitter and have to adjust either needle/hook size or follow the pattern for the next smaller size, or both. Today I am making beanies for teens in foster care. The bad part is that they all want solid black. The little kids enjoy color but the teens just want to fit in. So black it is.

Doing the same pairs of colors in multiple rows can make the sweater look striped. I mixed my 7 colors in different combinations throughout for my first sweater (I had removed yellow and white as too extreme). The next time I made seaglass, I used 24 colors and mixed them all up.

Your Seaglass swatch looks beautiful! Personally, I like the gold, but I wonder if color dominance might help recede the gold yarn a bit if you’re not sure about keeping it in. Idk how you do colorwork, but if using two hands, holding the gold yarn in the right hand/on top might help it blend in a bit better as it’ll become the background color. Or use it on just one row, instead of 2 consecutive rows (although that will break the pattern), but looking at the top of your swatch where there’s only one row of gold and it seems to blend in better/not look so much like a stripe. Looking forward to seeing the final results, I have some fingering yarn I bought years ago that I had no idea what to do with, and I think you might convinced me to make a Seaglass Cardigan if your fingering version ends up alright!
Roxanne Richardson also has a tutorial on how to swatch in the round without having all those strands in the back if anyone is interested

I swatch begrudgingly, with little patience, and only once. If the gauge is close enough I just cast on and figure I can block to size later. If it is not close enough i adjust one needle size and cast on, again figuring I can block to size later. I certainly do not have the patience to block my swatches. This method has generally worked well for me, and in worst case scenarios, if the sweater does not fit, I find someone who it will fit and give it to them. :)

(And I'm working on completing some gift knits: two hats and one shawl). Thanks for the swatch demo. I don't generally do them, but I've been lucky in my size results for the most part with garments. But I'm slowly coming around to the idea of doing a swatch more often, so thank you.

I love both of the Rainbow versions but I think the dithered version (not the smooth gradient of the ROYGBIV) is the best because it lets the individual colours shine more with the contrast. Idk if I'd say the pure rainbow gradient would be too on-the-nose even if it is, y'know 🌈🏳‍🌈💅.
I'm sure there's some mathematical way of arranging 7 colours so that each pair of two is in the pattern once and only once with no repeats which would be 21 different colour combos (not counting order) but I'm not certain how it would be done, and it would be a lot to keep track of.

I feel like most people will buy the sweaters quantity ( for the dye lot reason you mentioned) and if they don’t get gauge, they’ll either adjust needle size or adjust the size of sweater to fit the gauge. If neither work, they’ll find a new pattern to fit that gauge.

Hi. Great video again. I highly recommend to read or see about gauge swatch in Principles of Knitting and Patty Lions book. Very important is to simulate the gravitation and hang the swatch with a bit of weight. This is specially convenient for fibres as alpaca, superwash yarn, linen, cotton.
Recommend also Roxanne Richardson tutorial for fake swatching in the round
