Socks are the first garment that I’ve gotten really excited for though, so yes it’s a good cult to join! Any tips for the newer devotees to the cult of sock knitting?

I love knitting socks too. I’m now progressing to more than single colors. My daughter has a terminal disease. Hospital medical staff like to see me come with my time-passing craft, my current sock project. It is small so it fits in my purse, not large that it drapes over the chair or fall to the floor. It doesn’t offer the same possibility of bringing in infection or taking out hospital germs from being a large project item, shawl, afghan, etc. I started knitting socks during Covid. I don’t enjoy knitting anything else. Do I qualify as a potential sock knitting member. So glad I found your blog!! Today is my lucky day. I needs all your advice and words of wisdom on sock knitting. I so want to try color work.

Socks were also my second knitting project. I started 18 months ago and cast off my 38th pair last week. I almost always have a sock on the go now. My sock projects can fit into my coat pocket or handbag whilst I’m out and about which is super practical as a mum. I get a few stitches in when ever I can. You’re right about them being great gifts too. I’ve knit for my friends and family and everyone has always enjoyed them.

My first pair of scrappy socks were shortie/ankle socks, and very pretty…but I did not try them on as I was knitting. I learned at the end - after weaving in all the ends as I went, naturally - that I had picked the wrong size in the pattern. So they’re now my mom’s socks.

I've been knitting socks for years and I agree with everything you said! Especially the part about it being way more beginner friendly than most people think. I kind of learned knitting in the "wrong" order (started with socks, then a sweater, then a couple of hats, and have yet to make a scarf lol). It really is a lot less intimidating than it may look, it's a cheap way to start because you don't need large quantities of yarn, and you learn so many important techniques. Great video! :)

I have knitted lace doilies and tablecloths for 50 plus years. I love using tiny needles and thin crochet thread. The smallest size needles I have used is 0000 and size 30 thread. At times I am using 3 cable needles. 2 on the project and 1 to work with. All are 60 inches long. It's beautiful to see the lace come together.
I am starting to learn socks because I have never made a pair. I am learning 2 at a time method with magic loop beginning.

Also bought two new sock knitting books for my birthday, The Sock Project by Summer Lee (she also has a RUclips channel Okay Knits), and Knit a Box of Socks by Julie Lebouthillier. Hand knit socks are my family’s favorite gifts so in January I made my list and am working my way through 17 pairs (many will be DK or Worsted weight). I like CoBaSi by HiKoo for summer shorty socks. It’s a blend of cotton/bamboo/silk/nylon that holds up and launders great! Love the Crazy Sock Lady and Earthtones Girl video sock tutorials as well.

This was a great video! I feel inspired to share even more reasons!
1.) It’s a great way to use single skeins, especially those more wild variegated ones you may not want to use in a garment.
2.) There are so many methods to explore, from the types of needles (DPNs, magic loop, 9 in circular, flexible DPNs), to an array of different constructions and heels (there’s this one pattern I’ve seen that basically has you knit strips for the sock), and some people can get really into customizing them for the best fit. If you get bored with repeating projects, there’s always a way to keep it fresh!
3.) While second sock syndrome is a thing, knitting the socks in tandem can really help!
4.) A 100 g ball of sock yarn can go a long way, especially if you use a different yarn for heels, toes, and cuffs. You can also use scraps for things like colorwork and stripey socks.
5.) Sock yarn is really versatile and can be used for many other types of projects, and you can hold it with other yarns to meet a thicker gauge for different projects.

I guess I lucked out that I wasn't aware of exactly how hard it was. But it didn't bother me. I just took one step at a time and used the knitting equipment that worked for me so the whole process wasn't so overwhelming...meaning I used a circular needle first and then moved on to DPNS.

Oh, this is so funny! Your video started auto-playing on RUclips because I'm knitting socks and didn't click on anything on the page LOL. Also, one of my first (if not THE first) project I've done was a pair of 'house socks'. They were in worsted weight yarn, really loose, to wear over socks, so that I could practice all the techniques - like you said, marvelous project to learn different things! The ones I'm working on are my first ever pair of toe-up socks - thanks to which I learned how to do Judy's Magic Cast On, how to do an increasing gusset instead of a decreasing one, how to turn a heel using wrap & turn (first time in my life doing short-row shaping), how to knit a slip-stitch heel while closing the gusset and gave me an opportunity to practice Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. Like, I've been a knitter for about five or six years now, and some of these techniques are brand new to me! (And I've done my fair share of different projects, including beanies, berets, bandanas, sweaters, cozies... The only category I want to tackle now is a blanket) My mother gets pissy at me for taking my socks everywhere, like you, but it's so comforting to know I have something to work on if I'm in a different/awkward social situation. It's not obstructing or obnoxious, like say, a sweater would be, to whip out at a bar, at the movie theater or on the bus.
Like you, I'm still a cuff-down girlie, but it was so freaking interesting to experiment with a different way to achieve the same results!! I'm a sock aficionado (thanks to watching Crazy Sock Lady's tutorials for literally six months before ever even picking up knitting needles, which yes, is a bit insane, but I'm nothing if not a nerd at heart and love me some good research) and it was so, so cool to find your video

Your list is exactly why I enjoy knitting socks. The 'sock heel turns are magic' is something I say a lot. You're knitting along, you do a few shortrows, and magically you have something people can identify as a sock! I also agree that there are so many patterns that you will never knit them all. I probably have 400 patterns saved and all of them are FREE. I have them divided into textures, lace, and colorwork.
I also love the idea of coming up with these patterns, if they are lace, textured, or colorwork. within the confines of the 56/64/72 stitch parameter. As a person who loves math, I find it fascinating.
Your froggy socks are adorable! You did a great job on both pair. Yes, handknit socks are amazing to wear, amazing to knit, completely portable. I enjoy knitting them so much, I have 8 pair on the needles. I would love to get a few pair off the needles because that is WAY to many. My goal is to finish those 8 and perhaps a few more. I want to knit 2 pair each for my grandsons because they came over to go sledding and had to borrow my socks! Their's will be tube socks, though, so they can wear them longer.

Its so funny because growing up I always HATED math and told myself I would never have a job/hobby that has anything to do with it, but now I crochet, knit, and sew and I am constantly doing math 😅. I also teach theatre and have to build sets and there's SO much math in construction!! Maybe I don't actually mind it 🤣
Also, 400 patterns!!?!?! That is amazing!!

I love knitting socks because sock yarn is so beautiful, and you can make a wearable from only one skein. I went to a prayer meeting at a friend’s house on a cold rainy November evening. When I came out, leaves had blocked the drainage in the street , and I stepped into a pool of cold water, in my crocs. My feet were soaked, but because I had on hand knit wool socks, it wasn’t that uncomfortable.

I learned to knit, just because I wanted to knit socks. I followed Marly Bird from Red Heart, she taught a 4 video (maybe 5 ) series, and I learned using DPN’S we knitted house socks on size 5 needles, but then we had the 100% ability to knit them. Everyone loves hand knit socks, I work on them all year, they are my Christmas presents and they all look forward to them. 😎

I am a fairly new knitter and have recently in the past. Few months have started knitting socks. After a little trial and error, I think I finally got it!! as of right now I am only needing a basic vanilla sock but I’m still excited about it because the type of yarn and color of yarn makes even the basic vanilla sock exciting to knit! I love watching the sock come together I love watching the colors play off of each other and I just love everything about knitting socks.
But I always wonder if I could consider myself a knitter if the only thing that I ever knit is socks? 🤔😀
I have a knitted sweater currently on the needles and all I have to do is that one sleeve but I am so burnt out from the time and effort it took me to make this sweater that I don’t even wanna go back to it right now but socks, nice, easy, portable. I love everything that you’ve said about them. !! ❤❤❤❤❤

I knit 1.5 pairs of socks probably about 4-5 years ago (the second pair was for someone I was dating at the time, but we broke up before I finished them and I never polished it off). I found it fun at the time but didn't quite catch the groove.
But recently I've thought about becoming the types of knitters that only do socks!! Not exclusively actually, but I feel like I frequently want to knit but rarely know WHAT I want to knit and socks are the perfect project for that type of thing. There's always a need for them, they're fast to make, and it's easy to come back to if I get sidetracked with a bigger project for awhile.
The thing that really got me back into it was doing 2 at a time with magic loop. There's something so daunting about making a pair of something that I have to finish one at a time-- I almost never get back to the second one unless it is a gift or I'm on a time crunch. I don't know if you've tried it, but I think it's super fun and has elevated my sock game.
Thanks for the video!! Really inspired by your (relatable) passion for sockmaking.

Winter socks: Wool-Nylon blends. Spring and summer socks: Cotton- Nylon blends. Why nylon blends? Well, pure wool yarn tends to "grow". I also like my hand knit socks to be machine washable and on a decently hot temperature. I'm also (sock in progress on my lap as I'm typing this) on a quest to make the heel flap stitches as smooth and invisible as possible when knitting toe up socks because all the tutorials I've found left me very unsatisfied.

I am getting ready to make toeless socks they are great for flip-flop season and because I’m a diabetic the toes and my socks are driving me. Crazy actually painful so I decided to make these and the other reason I make socks is because I have big feet for a woman I wear an 11 men’s so I have to measure my foot in multiple places I don’t have big ankles or thick calves just really long feet, but I started in Germany when I was learning to knit making a pair of tights came from North Carolina and you just do not understand how cold it is until you move to Germany. As soon as I got my daughters tights made, I immediately went into lace socks. We went to Bavaria and everybody wore two pairs of socks with lace designs and it’s so fun remember when doing lace or color work, you can keep changing your pattern every couple of rows, so it’s a really good learning experience.

Gurl, the first video I watched from you was your sweater video and you were so charming and your sweater turned out amazing! I started knitting again and got really into it this time. I’ve knit two scarves the past month and was wanting to finally knit a sweater but was intimidated by it.
Watching your video really inspired me to go ahead and do it and I’m so happy to say I’m almost done with my last sleeve and then will be ready to seam it up! I’m nervous about how it’ll fit but it looks cute and I think it’ll turn out alright (I’m worried the armpits will be tight but I think I can add gussets if it is and it’ll be ok).

Another reason is how nice it feels to wear socks that are custom fit to your feet. Most commercial socks for adults come in two sizes: men's or ladies'.
