This has long been among my favorite performances in opera. Mozart frequently, as here, provides a duet between the oboe and the soprano. This opera is filled with glorious arias for three different sopranos, and among them all, this is my favorite. Dame Kiri is wonderful! Every time I listen to this it brings tears to my eyes... so beautiful. Catch her in the Magic Flute (Marriner). I wish that had been a live opera performance.
Stunning, Dame Te Kanawa! She even manages to transcend tears into her voice without the dangers of falling into wailing. She is so in carachter and lovely it´s hard to believe she´s not lip syncing. Bravissima !!
The "Opera" exhibition at V&A Museum in London a while ago had this, sung by KtK, playing about halfway round. When I got to the end of the exhibition, I went back, to make this the last thing I heard before I left: glorious!
Here is the bar that all who want to sing Mozart aspires to for the last 40 years. Kiri's voice and interp. are tailor made to Mozart, Strauss and some Puccini. She sang this aria just as clean and smooth in 1997 as here in 1973! Brava Kiri and thanks for posting!
This is the Kiri - both voice and technique - that so impressed Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge when Kiri was just a student in London. They heard something from her that they said was truly special and unique, and boy were they right.
this was amazing. I'm performing this for a voice competition in a few days and watching Kiri helped me understand the pain the character is feeling. Gosh she's so amazing. wow.
Agreed! Fleming has so much talent that she sometimes (sometimes) "overthinks" her arias and fashions every note a little too much. (mind you I think Fleming is unbelievably talented!) Kiri and Mozart work well because the phrases are so pure and straightforward and her voice itself is so pure and effortlessly lyric that it lets the music speak for itself. Also works great with (lyrical) Strauss who obviously paid a lot of homage to Wolfgang.
Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro, O Love, give me some remedy Al mio duolo, a'miei sospir! For my sorrow, for my sighs! O mi rendi il mio tesoro, Either give me back my darling O mi lascia almen morir. Or at least let me die.
i think her voice is perfect -- perfect every thing -- there will never again be another like her enjoy her while we can the great ones always go to soon and she is getting up there in years
I've been looking up videos of this song for a while, and this is the first one to make me cry. Exactly what I was looking for. So many just over do it, and this is heart-wrenching! Beautiful!
I remember when I was a teen, I had full operas and their libretti. When I was at my grandparents', at the beach, I'd walk the beach for miles listening to them, especially Le Nozze di Figaro.
@baritonebynight we sang with her here in new zealand a couple of months ago, she is still AMAZING... her last note in "oh quand je dors" lasted forever.. indescribable!
@RRydnew I saw her in recital in 2006 and she opened with this...she was in amazing voice and had complete control. Her voice has changed very little with time.
To the young women below, musical taste matures with cultivation. So the more you listen to these pieces, the more you will enjoy them, especially if you think of the qualities of the Countess, and her sentiment, in the aria.
Don't mean to split hairs vottur, but Dame Kiri IS 65! Her birthday is March 6, 1944 but there is still no one to rival her. A true lady with a voice of gold....
Wow. So I just need to learn to.... do all that. I'm getting over a majorly evil cold, but I'm going to sing this today in opera class anyway. Oh gosh, wish me luck.
Dit is toch goddelijke muziek, vooral als je wat somber bent en heel moe bent van het werken zodat je je tranen van geluk niet meer op kunt houden dat je mag werken.
Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro, O Love, give me some remedy Al mio duolo, a'miei sospir! For my sorrow, for my sighs! O mi rendi il mio tesoro, Either give me back my darling O mi lascia almen morir. Or at least let me die.
One of the greatest Sopranos of the last century, a voice without compare and she brought her personal beauty to her roles, this aria is perfectly believable. Well, the count is an idiot.
Haydn listened to this opera in his dreams throughout the late 1780s…..He wrote that “Figaro gently haunts his thoughts at night” … Both were superb composers
It's from a 1973 Glyndebourne Opera performance with London Philharmonic Orchestra John Pritchard conducting. It's available on dvd. others in cast are ileanna cortrubas and frederica von stade.
For me, Schwarzkopf, Te Kanawa and Janowitz are the best at this role. I think that Janowitz has that little something which makes her the true Mozart virtuoso.
calsouthqueen. High praise for Kiri indeed! The other three, Schwarzkopf, Janowitz and Fleming are tremendous too. I have always though Elisabeth is in a class of her own, and sings German Opera the best. Gundula and Kiri come just behind this. I like Renee, but feel she is a little behind the other three (sorry).
In terms of Mozart's opera arias for lyric soprano, Porgi Amor and Dove Sono i bei momento are not my favorite. In fact, I find them rather dull compared to Mozart's more exciting and fluid arias for lyric sopranos, like Ach ich Fuhl's from The Magic Flute, or Ah, chi mi dice mai (that's more of a spinto soprano aria, but spinto sopranos are a type of lyric soprano albeit a "pushed" more dramatic one) from Don Giovanni. I don't know, maybe I'm biased because I'm a light coloratura soprano. I love arias that required vocal flexibility, and coloratura sections. However, Kiri te Kanawa truly does make Porgi Amor so beautiful and heartfelt! Her voice is like the richest and purest gold. Plus, it's a staple aria for her full lyric voice! Not to mention, this aria isn't as simple as it sounds. I haven't personally learned it, but I've read it requires great breath control and exquisite phrasing; two vocal techniques that I have a lot to improve on, even though I have been taking lessons for five years now. Anyway, in Kiri's performance, I can truly feel the desperation and sorrow over the Countess over the loss of her husband's love.
+Megan Tholen I think you should sing this aria, like you sing a constant piano. Don't let the breath control slip away, and every single note in the head, in piano...
I will try to stay calm not to start a furious rant. You lot of pedantic know-it-alls haven't got an idea what you are talking about. This is one of the arias of Mozart that have made him one of the greatest ever, sung by one of the greatest singers ever. If it is not possible to just listen and be moved by the text and music... at least keep us out of it and keep quiet.
gertjaap56 I love that we all had a lovely civil discussion of this aria and its qualities, and enjoying feedback, and then this angry so-and-so comes along and wants to ruffle feathers. People slay me.
Excellent vocal and physical portrayal of longing and sadness for long forgotten affection. The expression on her face speaks volumes...Brava...Brava.
This has long been among my favorite performances in opera. Mozart frequently, as here, provides a duet between the oboe and the soprano. There are no oboes in "Porgi Amor," the only woodwinds clarinets, bassoons and horns.
This is the most stunning rendition I've found...she has such beautiful timbre and consistency!! That is indeed the standard.
0:08 music, 1:22 voce
Kiri at her best.....the sheer beauty of that voice.
Kiri, sensacional... com Mozart, esplêndida. Essas palavras doem na alma. Quanto sentimento!
Stunning, Dame Te Kanawa! She even manages to transcend tears into her voice without the dangers of falling into wailing. She is so in carachter and lovely it´s hard to believe she´s not lip syncing. Bravissima !!
Kiri always thrills me, I just love her...
I love you forever Kiri! My all time favourite singer of all time! 💟💗
DIdn't think I like Kiri, but I listen to this again and again. Best expression ever for this aria!
The "Opera" exhibition at V&A Museum in London a while ago had this, sung by KtK, playing about halfway round. When I got to the end of the exhibition, I went back, to make this the last thing I heard before I left: glorious!

I cry when I listen to this, don't know why, but it touches my soul ...
The most beautiful version of this ária !
This is the Kiri - both voice and technique - that so impressed Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge when Kiri was just a student in London. They heard something from her that they said was truly special and unique, and boy were they right.
I've probably seen and heard this aria 100 times and never before I have I been moved to tears. Bravissima, Dame Te Kanawa.
I love this aria its so beautiful
this was amazing. I'm performing this for a voice competition in a few days and watching Kiri helped me understand the pain the character is feeling. Gosh she's so amazing. wow.
How did you do? :)
One of my all time faves. She's simply sublime ❣
Kiri darling, if he don´t want you, I certainly do!!!

I agree about the renee comment. Luv her as well but smetimes her lack of simplicity distracts my ears after listening to kiri
This is just beautiful and such a wonderful example to listen to.! Love Kiri Te Kanawa!
How I love Kiri's voice. She does the countess so beautifully
Kiri, Kiri. Her voice is aboslutely gorgeous. I can listen to it all day.
Beautiful Kiri and Wonderful Mozart.

One of the best things i've ever listened to. GREAT!
Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro, O Love, give me some remedy
Al mio duolo, a'miei sospir! For my sorrow, for my sighs!
O mi rendi il mio tesoro, Either give me back my darling
O mi lascia almen morir. Or at least let me die.
Cheers Roland!
Thanks for posting this outstanding performance.
Stunning I could feel my chest swell abruptly after 3:47 and I realized I had forgotten to breathe. 😇
Che splendida esecuzione... Anche la sua pronuncia italiana è ottima. Brava!
i think her voice is perfect -- perfect every thing -- there will never again be another like her enjoy her while we can the great ones always go to soon and she is getting up there in years
I've been looking up videos of this song for a while, and this is the first one to make me cry. Exactly what I was looking for. So many just over do it, and this is heart-wrenching! Beautiful!
She has such a creamy voice, with such floating legato, such smoothness. Just grabs me every time.
Just glorious! She is so perfect for this role!
I remember when I was a teen, I had full operas and their libretti. When I was at my grandparents', at the beach, I'd walk the beach for miles listening to them, especially Le Nozze di Figaro.
Beautiful, consistent tone!
This just gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
@baritonebynight we sang with her here in new zealand a couple of months ago, she is still AMAZING... her last note in "oh quand je dors" lasted forever.. indescribable!
If this doesn't break your heart, you don't have one. She's the benchmark Countess. Brava!
@RRydnew I saw her in recital in 2006 and she opened with this...she was in amazing voice and had complete control. Her voice has changed very little with time.
Well done !!!!! She done very good bro I love this songgggg

Heartbreaking. And too beautiful for words.
This is perfection!!

the best mozart's singer ever!
To the young women below, musical taste matures with cultivation. So the more you listen to these pieces, the more you will enjoy them, especially if you think of the qualities of the Countess, and her sentiment, in the aria.
Thank you so much for posting! She is simply divine.

Don't mean to split hairs vottur, but Dame Kiri IS 65! Her birthday is March 6, 1944 but there is still no one to rival her. A true lady with a voice of gold....
she's 80 now
Old but gold.
I agree! Bravissima, stupenda!!!
A friend recommended this by Schwarzkopf, but I think this one is more moving. Schwarzkopf didn't bring tears.
Mozart a mechanism divine.
Wonderful: Thanks
3:46 my heart melts
Beautiful
she captures the heartbreak of this aria perfectly
Perfection!
SPLENDIDA!!!
Stupenda! !!!!!
No-one can better this.
Magnífica!
somebody once wrote this was the greatest piece of music ever written by a man for a woman.... no argument there....
Exquisite!
Wow. So I just need to learn to.... do all that.
I'm getting over a majorly evil cold, but I'm going to sing this today in opera class anyway.
Oh gosh, wish me luck.
And? :) Brava for being able to do this at all!
Это одно из лучших исполнений моей любимой арии
Kiri - Countesss, and then - others.
@choirfreak26 shes retired from opera... you may be able to catch her in concert once in a while
kiri is the best for this role..
Dit is toch goddelijke muziek, vooral als je wat somber bent en heel moe bent van het werken zodat je je tranen van geluk niet meer op kunt houden dat je mag werken.
Gundula is also perfection! i like them both
Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro, O Love, give me some remedy
Al mio duolo, a'miei sospir! For my sorrow, for my sighs!

O mi lascia almen morir. Or at least let me die.

the only genuinely watchable performer in the entire industry
abolutely stunningly f**king beautiful.
I think this has Kiri close to her best, suits her nicely
me encanta
4:00 gets me everytime
Check out the 2nd movement of Haydn's 88th symphony! The "Sighing" motif with the orchestra is strikingly similar!
Which was written a year after ... so Haydn copied Mozart?
Haydn listened to this opera in his dreams throughout the late 1780s…..He wrote that “Figaro gently haunts his thoughts at night” … Both were superb composers
No. "I Loves you Porgy," is from Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess composed about 100 years later.
Exquisite.
SPLENDID
I completley agree! Sorry I misinterpreted your message!
Look at her face and notice her body language; she is the consummate rejected wife;MARVELOUS!!!!
I would like to know when this performance happened and the orchestra, conductor, theatre.
It's from a 1973 Glyndebourne Opera performance with London Philharmonic Orchestra John Pritchard conducting.

I agree. I am not 100% sold on this song, but I am singing it for college juries this semester. I would love to have more breath support like this!
Schoolgirl325Enjoy yourself. :D

Phew *wipes forehead* j/k
anybody know who the conductor is and what company produced this?? thanks in advance
It's Glyndebourne in 1973. The conductor was Sir John Pritchard.
