- Make sure you tune in for the second episode this week. Viewers asked for help with doing what President Nelson asked us to when he said to study Section 109, so we did an episode where we explored that section for you.
Kent mentions some articles in this episode. Here is the information for them:
Benjamin R. Jordan, “‘Many Great and Notable Cities Were Sunk’: Liquefaction in the Book of Mormon,” BYU Studies 38/3 (1999): 119-22.
Benjamin R. Jordan, “Volcanic Destruction in the Book of Mormon: Possible Evidence from Ice Cores,” Journal of Book of Mormon Studies 12/1 (2003): 78-87.
Bart J. Kowallis, “In the Thirty and Fourth Year: A Geologist’s View of the Great Destruction in 3 Nephi,” BYU Studies 37/3 (1997-98): 136-90.
In this episode Kent Brown and Kerry explore the disaster and darkness that came at Christ's death, and the amazing burst of light that came a year later when Christ appeared to them. They then delve into the incredible things Christ taught them, and they experienced, when He appeared to them. In the way that only Kent Brown can, they explore the relationship between God and His Son, and His Son and His children.
We are grateful for our generous donors, and for our producer, Launchpad Consulting Studios, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.
Thank you for having Dr. Brown on, he's a treasure, and it's a blessing to hear him speak.
Amen to that 200%!!!
Kent Brown is my favorite Scholar. In my opinion he brings the scriptures to life like no one else can do.
How we love Dr. Brown! I have learned so much from his books and teaching.
Me too! It is a blessing to learn from him!
Appreciate Dr. Brown’s fascinating insights. It is always interesting when he is on. Thanks for having him.
He does teach us all so much, doesn't he?
Amen to what Kerry said. Dr. Brown made these scriptures extremely relevant to me today.
Isn't it so exciting when that happens!?!
Wow! You were right- Dr. Brown brings up a few awesome insights that I didn’t see in my studies. Thank you for having him on your show. He was fascinating to listen to.
He really makes us think!
Thank you for the discussion on the details of the destruction and the timeline. It all makes more sense to me now. Thank you so much.
It makes it so real, doesn't it?
I am grateful to you and Dr Brown for providing us with more details about the appearance of Jesuschrist in our Continent and His doctrine.😊
It is such beautiful stuff!
Wonderful discussion. I liked how he made it feel very real !
Wasn't his ability to do that so great, and didn't it make it so powerful!?!
Thank you… this was beautiful and touching! It reminds me so much of my first few years here in Provo after I had just joined the church in New York in 1998.I used to listen to him every morning at 8 o’clock at BYU on line before I went to work to catch the scriptures and try to understand them through their understanding! Wonderful!
I am glad that his was helpful for you, and that it was great memories too. Bless you!
I’ve been wondering whether the people were in Bountiful for one of the feast days of the law of Moses. Has anyone studied this aspect of Christ’s appearance at that time?
@@reitzejb It is worth thinking about. I don't know of any research on this.
Thank you Kerry and brother Brown. This was so amazing and uplifting
I agree wholeheartedly! Kent uplifted me and made it all so real to me.
I loved this podcast with Dr. Brown! Thank you.
I am glad you were blessed, as I was, by what he had to teach us!
Thank you for this lesson. I was reminded of various times when I have gone around doing what I hoped was the Lord's will without knowing it. I've also been reading Elder Bednar's book on Personal Revelation. In it, he basically says so long as we're living worthy of the Spirit, He's always with and guiding us. We just don't feel His presence strongly. So, I just bumble about and hope for the best. In a few instances, I've been made aware of the difference I've made.
This is such an important point. If we are covenant keepers who have received the blessings spoken of in Section 109, then the Lord will guide us. Surely there will be times when He lets us move forward on our judgment, and surely there will be times He is guiding us, or we are baptized by fire, and we just don't recognize it. I think that happens far more than we recognize. I have seen it happen regularly in my life.
Make sure you check out our other episode this week. You will see connections.
I wasn’t aware of many of those details about Mt St Helens, and wow, that brings 3 Nephi to life in a whole new way.
In your conversation about the baptism by fire, it stood out to me that we have little experiences like that in our daily lives, like mentioned in the recent episode about wonder and awe: where we can be slogging in the cares of the world, or in sin, or in confusion or contention, and then the Spirit washes over us in a way as total as immersion, and suddenly things just aren’t as hard or as perplexing-like an alternate dimension, almost, where things are just not so awful, but awesome in the best ways.
We sure do try to force or list ways to maintain that, don’t we?
What a mercy we aren’t on our own in “learning Heaven,” as Brother Wilcox says it.
Wow, there is so much to learn, isn't there!?
Kerry, you always have such wonderful guests! Dr Brown has really given me some things to think about. Every Tuesday evening my ward has a voluntary Come Follow Me meeting that I love to attend each week. I always try to listen to your podcast before I go, and share what I've learned here with the group. It's been an amazing experience, to go and connect with ward members (usually about a dozen or so), each bringing their insights and learning from each other. Thank you for all you do to make the scriptures come alive to us!
A friend from the group recently traveled down from here in Canada to BYU education week, and at my urging went to see one of your lectures. I think it went a tad over her head but I was a bit, or maybe more than a bit jealous.
Ah, she was probably at the Isaiah lectures. That one was my most egg-headed lecture ever. I think it may have been a bit overkill.
Yes, this was fabulous! Thank you. Also, I don't know if is the right place to ask, but I purchase an Ankh necklace from your wife. I would like to get another one, but I can't remember her website. Can you post it?
I am so glad the episode was helpful. Neither of us remember helping anyone get and ankh necklace, and I don't know a handy place to get one here in the states. Sorry.
Can you please clarify 3 Ne 11:21. Clearly, they had been ordained to baptize because they had been crying repentance and baptizing for generations. Did they have to be newly ordained because the Law of Moses was fulfilled? Did they rebaptize for they same reason? Or, are they called to baptize those who had never baptized?
We don't know for sure, it never tells us. The assumption is that they are baptized into Christ's church, but we really don't know.
I attended your Monday morning Ed wk presentation that got interrupted by the fire alarm and did come back in. Where can we find the rest of your presentation?
I need to make some time to record that. I was going to do it first, but the extra one this week seemed more pressing. I hope to get to it soon!
I don't believe there was anyone who told the righteous to "move along." I think the Savior would have given each soul the time to stand in awe of Him and His sacrifice. There was a temple open house several years ago where we, as visitors, were literally rushed through the temple like cattle. There was no feeling of awe or reverence and it was upsetting since we had taken some of our children who were not participating members in the Church. Jesus took time for each person, one by one, because He values us as individuals.
That is a very good point. I don't think either of us were being serious on that point, it was a facetious way of pointing out that this could have taken a very, very long time. There may have been some mechanism the people or culture employed to make it a calm process rather than a chaotic one, but we really were just trying to make a point. Thanks for pointing out how the way we did it could make the wrong impression. That helps us improve.
Not all cities where destroyed, only the most wicked places.
A few cities or places were spared.
These cities or places is probably where bread and wine were found.
That could be, though these cities still experienced destruction. Still the text makes it clear that it was a year later.
Isn't a tempest a storm which usually consist of rain?
About the people harmed from the destruction.....most likely there were very many harmed people,
not every detail is recorded in the scriptures.
Mormon says so in his writting....he says their writing was difficult and to save space.
Also he could only write what the LORD said to write.
Oh, there is no doubt people were harmed. I think Dr. Brown addresses that, they were certainly harmed and in need of being healed.
What a great thought that our God begins with the end in mind. I'm sure this is why He states early on that He is the Alpha and Omega. The Beginning and the End, and all that is in between.
In the computing world, we use the word Delta to describe the difference when comparing two data sets. In this aspect, in addition to Alpha and Omega, I also like to think of Christ as the Delta. Because He makes up the difference for us. I love that we can find aspects in all things that will point you to Christ. All things denote there is a God (and you'll notice it if you are looking for it).
There is so much to think about in your post. Thank you. I love the notion that He is not only the beginning and end and everything in between, but also the difference and change in between. Thank you.
@TheScripturesAreReal thanks for letting us contribute to an already fantastic discussion. Someday I hope to have a one hundredth part your yours and your colleagues knowledge of the gospel.
