    Voultar,
I can't thank you enough for compiling and releasing this video. Not because I need the assistance, but because you're spreading the word of modding and helping other people learn how to extend the life of their consoles and games. You do so much for the betterment of the retro gaming scene.

He explains it better than any of the other mod videos I’ve watched. Normally I get lost somewhere in the middle of the mod process, give up, and have to start all over again. Not with this video! 👍
Funny enough, I think I watched 20 different videos while trying to mod my vita a little over a year ago. It seemed like everyone had a different method too 😅

I'm grateful for them too. The WiiU was a solid console fucked over by Nintendo's shit naming and marketing. It should have done way better than it did.

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 2 года назад +3

@@clblanchard08 100% agreed. I wasn’t one of those that thought it was just a gamepad add on for the Wii… but I WAS one of those that thought it was a weak console and didn’t buy one during production. What’s worse, I’ve owned every Nintendo console dating back to the NES in 1988. But then the pandemic happened, had a lot of time on my hands, so I bought I Wii U. Started tinkering with it and fell in love. Now I see why Wii U fans are so die hard. Now I own three of them, haha.

The bigger and more anti-consumer a company becomes, the more I am indifferent to piracy of their IP's....

  • @dekky3908
    @dekky3908 2 года назад +10

Have had a hacked 3DS for many years, hack a lot of co-workers, friends and family 3DS systems, play a lot of my SNES collection on the go. This is why "piracy" is important to game preservation, once the company no longer makes boat loads of money off the game it gets thrown out with the trash. Many great classics would have disappeared entirely if not for dedicated archivers, and I can't justify spending hundreds of dollars to play a legit copy of some classics that won't ever benefit the original developer.
I never "pirate" games on current systems or ones that are easily obtainable and "reasonably" affordable, but I have no quarrel with 20 year old titles that are only available from 3rd party resellers.

You made a great jail breaking guide, and charismatic as always, but halfway through the explanation of Tiramisu I had a different thought. I’m going to get tired of doing this, jailbreaking my system in order to preserve my games through a system designed by a company that doesn’t want me doing that anymore.
At this point, I feel we need to pass some new legislation that keeps the burden on the platform developer to keep support for purchased licenses from a digital space for near perpetuity. It isn’t enough that another company handles licenses better than Nintendo, there needs to be something that protects consumers purchases on a digital platform when the company that made it still exists and they just decided to change platforms. Tired of getting our feet swept from under us, other companies are getting better at bringing back their older products in the TV streaming space, and it seems to work.
I restarted the video and watched it again after typing the comment and before uploading it. Great 3DS and WiiU guides. I used to collect 3DS handhelds during the console life. So I’m passionate about returning to it to enjoy 3DS ware. Thanks again for teaching us.
A question, I already have Pokémon Picross on my system and play it, will this affect the game (make it unplayable) after going through the steps above?

We've got a l-o-o-o-o-o-n-g way to go with consumer rights before this is even something you could consider the faintest possibility. Let's undo the damage caused by the DMCA first. If we manage to accomplish that, then we'll see if there's any hope for enforcing perpetual rights. But I highly doubt it.
Purchasing media with intellectual property has never been a transfer of ownership. It's just right-to-use, and the terms are entirely within the publisher's rights to set as they wish. It would take a _very_ big cultural shift to change that, and seeing as there's a ton of money bound up in subscription services right now, they're gonna fight tooth and nail.

Personally I think that it should just be a law that whenever some software has been replaced by enough new versions with major changes/become completely obsolete, the code has to be open sourced. Companies can bypass it by properly supporting their older products (ie. Maintaining and updating the code so that it still runs on new systems as time goes on) but if they choose to drop support then the community can pick it back up. Maybe under a new OSS license other than GNU, BSD or Apache which is designed purely for preservation. (eg. It's open source, but you can't use the code in commercial projects without permission, only community projects.)
It's more than just games which deserve preservation and even just for games you need the other software (eg. Operating system, libraries, APIs, etc) to run them. For example something like Windows 95/98/ME is required to run a whole range of PC games from the late90s and is completely irrelevant to MS competitively, while also having their own place in history on their own feet. Another example would be allowing console firmwares to be shipped with emulators once the console is no longer sold new in stores and the online storefronts are shut down. (ie. The company is no longer profiting from the hardware)
Another point is MMOs and other online-focused games: The server software should be eventually released to the public, at the very least once the game shuts down for good.

To hit on what I said in my tweet, I hold no value to digital content simply because companies can delist games that we have bought tells me they don't value them either. The especially do not value us as consumers. "Pirating" content that you paid for is NOT piracy.

Gotta say, Don't usually mod consoles but modding the Wii U is tempting. Most of the games I ever wanted to play on it are on Switch or are GBA and DS games they released on the store. Would be neat to open it up to be a more useful system. Does the homebrew channel operate just like it does on the WIi? Buddy of mine modded his Wii and it was pretty neat playing stuff like the F-Zero and Mario Kart Arcade games on it. And this one game where you have to drunkenly piss into a toilet.

Re: That intro -- well said.
IMO, if a console isn't able to be jail-broken, I have no reason to invest in it. Because it's not an investment. It's a money pit. I will always treasure my Wii, Wii U, PSP, Vita, 3DS, Switch, PS3, and PS4, because I can hack them, and the only thing I have to fear is the inevitable decay of all hardware.
Xbox, post-OG? I'll only buy the essential exclusives. If it's available multi-platform, I'm putting my money on the release for the system that I can jailbreak. Congratulations on the security track-record, but I'm never going to support that kind of ecosystem.
It's not about money. I'm happy to spend the money, and I've got the library of hardware and physical media to back it up. It's about the ownership. I've no interest in renting.

There's a new system update to the 3ds and Wii U as of 8/29, will this impact anything?

This is great stuff. If my Wii U has already been jailbroken, should I go through these steps to update? I did it back in 2016.

This has been literally the best how to video I have ever watched. However I am only half way through lol. And I’m currently scared because my sd doesn’t have the dcim file like yours does.

    Here's a question!
Let's say after everything, you wanted to install game programs on your 3DS
How would you go about that? Is it through the FBI app or the Homebrew app?
Also, what is the best site to get those roms/programs from?

I recently softmodded my new 3ds xl and it is a pain trying to get the Sd card out everytime. I wish it was like in the OG 3ds or the new 2ds XL where you don't need a screwdriver everytime. It would also be nice to allow the 3ds to connect to the PC to transfer any new games or software over.

Thank you Voultar for the video! I have done this for all of my 3ds and 2ds systems. I do have a quick question. How do I delete the pokemon picross safely? I am a bit nervous as you didn't say we should or not. I can see me doing that and it crashing on me. Thanks again!!!!!

Just outta curiosity, are you running a Win7 skin, or are you actually still running Windows 7? No hate, just IT guy curiosity!

Hey by the way you can use much bigger SD cards /micro SD cards on both. Just need to format them to Fat 32 and it will work...either using Rufus or aomei partition...
My Wii runs with a 128Gb micro SD card for GameCube Games and a 500Gb external USB 3.0 SSD for Wii games... I use a R4i Gold on my Ds lites and my 3DS XL with a 64Gb micro SD card i can play all the Ds games i want.. (ROMs/backups) can be downloaded for free...

I have an idea for a sequel to this video, the next step if you will.
Configure NTR & NTR View to cast the 3DS to the Wii U so you can use your Wii U as a giant 3DS.
