    Kevin McHale, a guest analyst on TNT before the Houston Rockets game against the Golden State Warriors on 2/9/2016 says he was stunned to be let go by the Rockets after 11 games of the 2015-16 season. McHale talks about the challenges they faced going into the season with Dwight Howard unable to go in back-to-backs and James Harden coming into camp overweight after suffering an ankle sprain in the offseason.

    He didn't deserve to get fired. The fact that the Rockets went from a WCF team to a first-round pushover with practically the same roster shows how important he was.

    I thought the Rockets had their coach in McHale, but he wanted to utilize Harden in with him playing off the ball in the open court, passing the ball to his teammates more, and playing defense. Harden wanted to play mostly isolation as a point guard, step back threes, etc....slow the tempo down at times. There is just no way this strategy works against teams that play the motion offense...and have good shooters. Spurs did it for a long time, Warriors picked up on it and became successful. Iso ball gives you 0.78 points per possession, compared to 1.18 for off the ball cuts, and 1.12 for transition. Doesn't seem like a lot but after 40 minutes you could see the iso team losing by 20-25 points against a motion offense team.

The number one problem of the NBA coach is not race, it's the fact that they get replaced so easily with usually no real reason. And that's weird when you add the fact that a coach's main job is to implement a system that is designed to last years.

    • @jreel
      @jreel 8 лет назад +5

      Don't put full blame on McHale. Rockets never fully committed to his system. Harden and Howard aren't good enough to win a championship together. Howard is like a role player on the court getting paid the max. The Rockets is just a thrown together team. There is no formula nor blueprint for how they want to construct their team. That is why they won't win shit.

    • @twashtalk
      @twashtalk 8 лет назад +1

      I'm not blaming McHale, he got the best out of the team last season, they came back (Harden) too cocky and the chip on the shoulder mentality isn't there anymore. Howard is a star but he isn't used properly on offense. Harden's lack of D frustrates the hell out of everyone who does play D. I agree their blueprint of layups and threes suits their star player but not the rest of the team. Morey has added players since they traded for Harden to win a championship with no real formula in mind. The were a team trying to make the playoffs, first round team and then a western conference finalist (thanks to the Clippers).

But once one coach is fired and the team still suffers, then clearly it has more to do with the roster and their cohesiveness rather than the coach. Harden isn't a leader and cannot will his team to a championship and Dwight Howard is mentally fragile and emotionally vulnerable. A recipe for disaster...

      Jack J What? I'm a white nationalist and think white dudes are mistreated by the players and league, but not coaches.
      McHale didn't deserve to be fired, but if he was black, he would've been fired for the same reasons just as easily.

    On a side note, Harden is one of the best to ever play SG. Best Rocket SG ever.

    Why is this video being recommend to me in 2021? Lol! And BTW guys, Kevin was fired because he was an alcoholic. There's times the assistant coaches called all of the plays in the 1st quarter while Kevin threw back diet cokes trying to sober up for the 2nd quarter. Kevin was a great player, terrible coach.
