Woodcarvers scrapers are not the same as those used by cabinetmakers!
In this video I'll show you what carvers' scraper look like, how to sharpen them and how to use them. If sharpened correctly, they'll leave a beautiful smooth surface with a lot of character and which doesn't need sanding.
Some carvers actually scrape with their chisels; I don't like doing this and prefer a dedicated scraper but it does point to the essence of the matter: Essentially carvers use a very sharp edge, not a 'ticketed' burr ('or wire edge') of the classic cabinetmaker's scraper.
I leave the scrapers straight from the grinder but you can sharpen them further on a fine benchstone 'for that ultimate shave'...

Thanks Chris this is really useful, I regularly use modified shoe knives, and old putty knives as scrapers but this is a good inexpensive alternative

Thank you. I am a huge fan. I have all your books and I've utilized them quite a bit. I really appreciate your style of woodcarving education. The intricate photos and close up details of your tools and techniques are most helpful.

Plunging the HSS creates micro-fractures. It's better to just let it cool slowly. 😎

@archiehebron8944 - Thanks for that point. I think I didn't make it clear in the video but I frequently dip the hacksaw blade in the water as I grind it, to keep metal cool; I never let the metal get more than hand warm.

@@woodcarvingworkshop1 I wondered about that as I watched. I know that I use a high speed grinder and my tools frequently get a small amount of bluing but that's no trouble as long as I don't shock them.
