>Sword Art Online >anime I hate that everyone else likes Josh...you do know Sword Art Online is basically universally loathed by most anime fans right?
Also, everything that happened in Elfen Lied was NOT just for shock. They were a chain of events that led to Yuka breaking mentally and going insane like she did, aka a MAIN PLOT POINT.
I Actually thought Light being unlikeable was the point. He starts as a principled, good-hearted person who slowly becomes corrupted by the power he was given, to the point where he loses his grip on all those things, losing his principles and becoming a cold-hearted, unfeeling killer himself.
Bar Rag Exactly!!!! The reason why I love Death Note (besides the thrilling cat and mouse game between two geniuses like L and Light) is I like the rise and eventual downfall of Light Yagami. He starts off the show having good intentions, but eventually he is consumed by his own ego and power. I believe without the Death Note, Light would've led a normal life. In the show, Ryuk says "humans are so interesting..." It makes you wonder what would happen if you received such a power. Surely you think you wouldn't change, right? That's what makes shows such as Death Note or Breaking Bad or House of Cards so amazing. We see "normal" people who start off with good intentions who eventually spiral into evilness in such a realistic and natural progression because of the events that happen to them. Did they become evil through these events? ...Or were they inherently evil to begin with and power simply fueled the flames? Hmm... This is why I love Death Note. It's a show that makes you think and there's many different interpretations to be had.
It is the point. The show is one big tale of a normal everyday human being obtaining a large amount of power (the Death Note) and being so overwhelmed with power that they start abusing it for their goals and satisfactions. Lights intentions were admirable from the start of wanting to clean the world full of criminals. It's not the best philosophy in the world but we get to see him attempt such a daring plan using the death note and avoiding the insightful L and the Task Force, all while he starts gradually becoming a psychopath and consumes the power he has to become the God of the New World. It doesn't make him the most likeable of protagonists but he doesn't need to be. The writers intended for Light to be so cruel and evil as he show progresses so that it demonstrates how someone could change if they contain so much power. That's what I find fascinating about the show and Light as a character since he plays the villain in the leading role. I get that some would hate Light for what he does. I mean, I love him in the show but if he were a real person right now, the police better fricking shoot the bastard down. But, I don't get why Light being unlikeable as a villain protagonist could be considered a flaw in anyway. I enjoyed him on screen, especially when him and L were facing one another like a Cat and Mouse. Not every protagonist of a show/movie has to be a good person, otherwise the term "Antihero" or "Villain-Protagonist" would not exist.
Disclaimer: This is coming from someone who hasn't seen Death Note. The way I see it, if you are going to make a show/movie/book from a villain's point of view, especially one that deals with morals and law, you need to have the villain be relatable. If you saw Tarzan or 101 Dalmatians from the villain's point of view it would not work well because the villains are too onenote to the point that they can't be easily related to. If they want to make the perspective of Light interesting, they need to give him moments of genuine humanity so that the line between viewer and villain blurs.
Yeah. I wasn't saying someone was stupid for not wanting to watch a show where the main character is unlikable. That is, in my opinion, one of the story's flaws; Light is kind of conceited all the way through (it just gets turned all the way up over the course of the story).
Nicolas Warren For me, a villain doesn’t always be relatable. As long as their character and motivation is interesting, such as Light, then that might make them good enough in my book. That, and I can tell that Light wasn’t written to be relatable in the first place. He’s basically nothing but an egotistical hypocrite who thinks he’s above everyone just because he has a magic book.
IMO Death Note was good because it was focused on the villan of the story, a twisted "hero's" journey through the eyes of a psycopath, for me that was the entire point because it was a clever subversion as for him being kira being obvious... it really wasn't, well at least in the first season and the second one pretty much took it all down.
I saw him as a true hero, but he started to fall and that led to his destruction. I rooted for him to bring justice to the world until he started killing off good people just because they were getting close. They way he manipulated people too. In the end the power corrupted him and showed why man shouldn't play god, but still I related to the desire to have that power to make the world a better place.
Why is SAO on this list? Don’t most people hate it?? I mean i don’t. It’s not great or anything, but i was under the impression that most people thought it should be cast into the deepest part of hell 😂😂
LavenousForever Despite the fact that it’s one of the most despised anime today, it has tons of fans and is incredibly popular. Heck, it got a second season, a movie, and has a videogame released every other year.
Personally I like light Yagami because he’s a bad guy, he isn’t a good person, that’s what’s so fun about his character. It’s so rare we get an actually bad character. It actually makes me upset when people say he’s just misunderstood. He’s not, he’s a bad person. *accept it you fools.*
I liked the ending of death note ..wtf is robin talking about..the 2nd half is even better than the middle third and more entertaining than the 1st half ...near is the best I love how cold calculated he is ..he seems to be the author himself as a kid inserted into the story.. and seeing him win vs light cocky ass was hilarious in the way he did it saying we had you all along ...Giovanni mvp ...
_ teriyaktastic Personally, I always enjoyed Light because he started out as a decent person. He wasn't a great person, but he wasn't bad. Though, even in the very beginnings there was something off with him. I enjoyed seeing him slowly shift from a cocky 17 year old to a totally insane, shell of what was once human as he tries to kill as many as possible without getting caught. That's what I like about Light Yagami, and what makes Death Note my favorite Anime.
Hating Light Yagami is like hating Eric Cartman. You love to hate them and see their downfall, except light yagami’s defeat is a slow burn rather than getting his own medicine every episode
PhantomStrider wait does Madoka Magica count because the main stream audiences thought it was too dark and gave it a 2 out of 5 on Netflix. Why would they do that?
It's not the Christian symbolism that makes Evangelion a deep anime imo, it's the personal psychological struggles of these very flawed characters. I think many people, myself included, relate to Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Misato's struggle and that's what makes it such a great anime. My biggest flaw with it was the "monster of the week" formula that takes up most of the series, but the last 6 episodes and the two feature films make it more than worth it.
What gets me is that people seem to have this perception that Evangelion has a “happy ending” yet the tone of it seems to suggest otherwise. And the whole plot about everyone being taken away only to be put back later is only implied and we never see it. If you are going to tell me that everything will turn out fine, show it. Film is a visual story telling, not a word based assumption storytelling.
Well to be completely honest, HATING Light Yagami is what made me enjoy the series! I just found myself SO motivated to watch the detectives inch closer and closer to bringing his downfall, so that when it finally came it was extremely satisfying. For me, it;'s like watching a horror. Not all protagonists have to ACT like protagonists! In fact, I enjoy it when shows put in the twist of giving the protagonist an antagonistic role. It makes it much more interesting, because stories don't often show the villain's side; and it is VERY hard to NOT SAY the anime was showing Light as a villain. He's manipulative, psychotic, shows multiple cases of him actually being a bit sexist (this is a maybe, but he seems to objectify women a bit in the series). The author himself confirms that if Light NEVER found the notebook, he would have been the best cop there was, and L's closest ally. But the power just corrupts and destroys him and turns him into an egotistical god-complexed monster. So it's fascinating to watch because it is VERY MUCH like watching a villain's origin story, their rise, and downfall. That's one of the reasons I enjoy the anime so much.
The fact that he found it as a naive, arrogant 17-year old, is the reason why he turned out such a prick. If he had found it as a responsible adult, he would not have seen the world as such a black-and-white place. Death Note is a tragedy of the wrong things happening to a potentially good person at the wrong place during the wrong time. His descent to becoming a criminal, the very thing he swears to destroy, is one of the reasons I consider Death Note a masterpiece.
ArtMun Studios true, not all protagonists have to act like a good guy but we need at least something that's decent about them in order to actually give a fuck about them. It's the same issue I have with Kratos.
@@EliM-fy4zs here in indonesia, most english teachers are shit at english themselves. for example i met this student teacher that spells elephant ayleephen. so you can blame our stupid education.o
To be fair there are more dislikes than in his usual videos so there was some justification. Honestly if I'd been making the video I'd have been worried too because usually people aren't accepting of you touching their holy calfs, especially Evangelion which I'm honestly amazed isn't what half the comments are about (and I'm not even a fan myself).
.hack also wasn't as shallow about humans as Sword Art Online was. I feel like this is a big problem for me in modern media in general is that humans feel like they've come to the point where they're so obsessed with their own species that it feels like nothing else is allowed to be good anymore. Even when a non-human character is good, it's usually temporary and they turn out to be evil later on.
I liked Light in Death Note for the reasons you said you hated him. I loved his intelligence and smugness. It was so great to see the mental chess battle against Light and L.
I really liked the opening from series 1 :) Season 2's one was popular, though I personally found it a hair too rough on the ears as a teen. Oddly enough, I enjoy season 2's opening a bit more now though.
The canon can be whatever you want it to be. If you like SAO proper, great. But if you don't, don't let yourself be restricted by something as silly as the show's original creator. :P
I personally really liked the ending of Death Note. It's so cool to get to see Light finally crack and express everything he's been holding to himself for years. I don't mind him being the main character either, since it's cool to see a story from what is basically the antagonists pov, and the ending is meant to represent the protagonists winning. Also Light Yagami's laugh (sub and dub) is so damn creepy I love it
Not gonna lie, it broke my heart to see Death Note here as it's one of my very favorite anime, easily in my top ten, but I can kinda understand your reasoning behind it. Opinion respected as always Strider.
I love naruto...I can admits its absolute dog shit .....like the worst ...it always was ..still is ..it has every negative thing you can say about anime story cliches and just really preachy boring messages ..what action ..I have seen more action in gumball lol
Nah, Naruto isn't nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. I think it had a really strong start, but I feel like i fizzled out over time, especially in the anime, what with the literal 72 episodes of filler in a row before Shippuden came out... The only good thing about the fillers was that the fansubbers I used to download the episodes from back in the day would always leave a little funny message after the ED, and during that big slog of filler it was almost all of it jokes about these fillers never ending, which was pretty funny imo xD
Surprisingly, i agree 100% with you on Light Yagami, but that doesn't kill the anime for me. All the detective work and investigation is what kept me engaged to this series the most, as well as the moral dilema that the series proposes, killing criminals for the greater good... only to then become the greater evil. Still, i understand why you don't like it.
+The Goblin I fully agree with you. Near (Nate River): "No. You're just a murderer, Light Yagami. And this notebook is the deadliest weapon in the history of mankind. You yielded to the power of the Shinigami and the notebook and you have confused yourself with a god. In the end, you're nothing more than a crazy serial killer. That’s all you are. Nothing more, and nothing less.” In this Nate (or Near) was correct. Light Yagami became the very thing he started out trying to 'fix'. Despite the flaws, the closing song "Zetsubo Billy" by Maximum the Hormone, I feel was perfect for the second part of Death Note. It is worth just watching to end to hear it. (It is closing song for episodes 20 - 36) if anyone else is wondering.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since. Evangelion is nothing but a bright shining lie. There is no instant cure for depression as so many on RUclips and Reddit claimed and praised this series to be. I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate this series which people treat larger than life, because of how much pain it resurfaces. Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic. But it only spiraled me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now. I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters. But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
Light Yagami is supposed to be a childish character. The entire idea of his character is that he is immature, which is why when he's also a genius, and he's given a power to basically play God. His character is supposed to be unlikeable. I respect your opinion, and this is just mine, I just wanted to give some counterpoints to your death note argument.
Gola245 it's an interesting anime if you're into more slower moving mystery kinda detective series, but it's personal tastes really. I loved it but I know people who got bored and dropped it.
Gola245 This anime is far from being boring. They managed to make Light eating a potato chip engaging. It’s a great anime, with a great soundtrack, plot, and voice acting. If you have trouble reading subtitles really fast then i’d recommend the dub. It’s just as good as the sub.
Liam L I treat Light Yagami in the same way I would treat Frank Underwood from House of Cards. They're both characters who are delightful to watch in action...but those actions are usually fucked all the way up. At least Light justifies his actions as for the greater good
I absolutely LOVE Death Note. Because it was my first anime to take place in the antagonists perspective. That was a fun little change up. We got to see him start out as a very smart person academically but a still dumb teenager wishing that he could make a difference in the negative he saw in the world. Then we got to watch him dive into the sadistically manipulative person he truly was all along. And I want to make this abundantly clear. He would not have gotten as far as he did if Misa Amane hadn't been in the picture. Go ahead and fight me on this. But if she hadn't been on his team then he would've been caught within the first season by L himself. Also, N was not the only one to trap Light. N had help from probably the two best characters who had more screen time in the manga. Notice me, Senpai. I'd love to dive more into the good and the bad of this anime.
Light is still the protagonist of Death Note, even though he might be the bad guy. The protagonist of a story is the central character, the antagonist being the foil to that character, making L the actual antagonist.
Don't apologize for having unpopular opinions. This video wouldn't be worth watching if you mouthed the same opinions as everyone else. That being said, your opinions aren't unpopular with me, after all. I hate all of these anime on your list except Death Note.
NET Alliance - Star Wars Fun Lol, hi fellow casual. I'm still new to anime too but I'm slowly going deeper into the rabbit hole. DBZ was my gateway into anime and now I've discovered even more animes that have now become some of my favorite shows of all time!
The problem with DBZ is Taito's tendency to cut as many corners as humanly possible(see One Piece) to the point that it starts to drag their shows down, and DBZ itself isn't an exception. It becomes even clearer when you watch a great studio like Madhouse, and their action series like Parasyte and OPM, where there is such an emphasis on fluidity of motion that the static fights of DBZ become even harder to watch.
Alexander Storm I know exactly what you mean. I've seen it with DBZ and I'm seeing it with One Piece, which is a shame because One Piece is my favorite anime. Toei is ruining One Piece with the animation and dragging the plot beyond belief. I wish One Piece would go to a different company at this point.
I don't see why watching the villainous protagonist win villainous victories is a flaw. But anyone will concede that the last arc was a fair bit wonky.
In defense of Eva's late game character regression (at least for the main trio): The characters are meant to be at their lowest points by the movie so the overly bleak tone isn't completely out of left field, and to make their eventual resurgence and victory more meaningful and well earned. -Rei's loyalty to Gendo was put into question, leading to her siding with Shinji at the last moment. -Asuka's pride was shattered and her repressed trauma over her mother was forcefully brought back to her mind, leaving her feeling worthless and miserable. Midway through End of Eva, she realizes her mother never truly left her, giving her the motivation to continue fighting. -Shinji was forced into doing horrible things for the sake of Nerv's plans and the only direct answer he ever got from anyone was Gendo affirming he only wanted to use him. All this (including "that one scene") left him confused, frustrated and drowning in self hatred. When shit gets serious (in both the movie and the finale two episodes of the show) and goes through a mental battle and comes out learning to love himself, and to live for the sake of no one but himself, reinforced the core message of the entire series up to that point. If that regression was still aggravating to watch, that's perfectly reasonable, I just wanted to at least clear that it wasn't for no good reason. The other criticisms were all perfectly valid as well. All in all, good video! You were honest with how to felt, and for it you have gained my respect.
Light wasn't ever MEANT to be a likeable character. He's an antagonist that a lot of people like me can't help but root for. He's an arrogant, sociopathic, narcissist but that's what makes it so good. He isn't meant to be likeable, but you want him to win just to see if he can do it. (We don't discuss after L's death. That didn't happen. He won.)
Light is the protagonist and L is the antagonist. The protagonist is simply the main character of a story, and the antagonist opposes them. If they are good or bad, a villain or a hero doesn't change their status as protagonist.
@@phantomstrider I heavily dislike Evangelion for a number of reasons. I saw the movie, The End of Evangelion in January 2020 without seeing the series first, thinking it would be a stand-alone sequel. The movie resurfaced my deepest traumas and made me feel as if I was forced to relive them. At first, Catharism assured me that a similar fate would never befall me again. But two weeks later, my best friend Max committed suicide. This broke me as I too saw him as a little brother, and he seemed so happy in the pictures he sent. At the time, I was alone, living in an apartment complex for people with social disabilities, me being higher functioning. I wanted someone I could relate with, someone who I could share my pain with, someone I could watch over. Enter Shinji Ikari, who I have come to treat as a real person, as that is how vulnerable I have become. As Covid-19 came around, there was little to distract myself from the franchise, so I became obsessed with it to try and make sense of the entire thing. People claimed the series, including the movie somehow cured them of their depression in ones sitting, when it seemed did the opposite for me which made me more determined to get to the bottom of the rabbit hole. Five months later, I underwent the worst breakup of my life, which continued to place me under the impression that Evangelion was becoming my reality. I was so disturbed at the time, that I was having nightmares of myself as Shinji Ikari choking Asuka and indirectly initiating the Third Impact. After everything that happened I often asked myself what I had done to deserve such suffering. I speculated Evangelion was becoming my reality. One of the things I did to try and find closure with my dilemma was sharing my predicament with people on Discord. Again, for the majority of my undertaking, I was begging for sympathy because I didn’t want to feel I was alone in my suffering despite the fact I was the only one who was unfortunate enough to be traumatized by the movie. Because of this, I was often met with mockery rather than assistance, and was banned from almost every single Evangelion server on Discord. This hurts me very much as I wanted to know if there truly was a cure, that same feeling Shinji felt when his loneliness washed away and he found himself surrounded by love. I refuse to accept the series doesn’t work for me just because I’m different. Because if the problem is me, I have no one to blame but myself. And I’m tired of blaming myself. I just want to appreciate something that others have given so much praise to. But sometimes I can’t help but blame myself for not changing fast enough to love myself as others have wanted me too, especially when the finale made it seem so fucking easy. All I want from Evangelion is for Shinji to be happy. Because he reminds me so much of the person I used to be, I often feel his happiness matters more than my own. If Shinji is not happy, neither am I. I feel his pain on a daily basis because he’s the only one goes wherever I go. I am afraid to lose him just as I have lost Max.
Howdy! A big thanks to Robyn for helping out again :) Next up is... I'm actually not sure. I was thinking one of these but feel free to leave your own suggestions. A: Worst Video Game Cartoons B: Creepiest Cartoon Glitches C: Creepiest Animated Movies D: Anime I love but everyone hates
An anime I hate but everyone likes is Tokyo ghoul because it's trying to hard to be edgy and I grew less and less entreated as the first season went on
Do you know why Death Note is good? It's because even though Light is probably one of the most insufferable characters ever it's so worth it to see his inevitable downfall. Also, L is a really interesting and likable character to root for.
I'll admit, Bakugo isn't an amazing character. He's certainly not in my top ten favorite's in MHA, but at least he can be humorous at times and has a relatable goal. Light, on the other hand, is a cold-hearted killer who literally had EVERYTHING going for him and isn't relatable in the slightest.
Jory Porteous I tried to read the manga but I just couldn't get into it like I did the show. The manga I like to read is more light-hearted and slice of life type stuff. 😅
nah, it's cause it pits against eachother ideas about justice and morality, that are relatable and make us think about them. i wouldn't like light as a person either, but as a character he was great
That’s the point of Evangelion. It’s a deconstruction of Mecha anime, it’s intended to show what would really happen if teens were tasked with fighting in a horrifying and traumatizing war.
What bothers me most is that they insist on using teens to fight these things. Hello! Earth to Gendo! They're kids! Here's a thought: Why not design the EVA's to be piloted by adults?
They needed to be piloted by children because they were orphans, and the EVAs they used had the souls of their mothers inside them. This was because one of the the most powerful emotions a mother could have is protecting their child. This emotion is shot up to homicidal levels, so the EVAs could fight with immense strength. But the main reason was because in those kinds of shows, the pilots are always young children. This was intended to show what would actually happen if a teen was forced to these sorts of things that would actually happen in a giant robot cartoon.
@@spidertwines If you haven't watched it then don't judge it. And if you think Magical Girl stuff is immature, you haven't seen Puella Magi Madoka Magica. You should see it, it's probably the best magical girl anime ever
@@leilanivaughan-williams3038 It's really hard to think differently about magical girl shit when you literally have what was it doki doki precure or somthing everywhere

I absolutely LOVE Death Note, but I can see where you're coming from with your complaints. Light is a stuck up arse, but I thought it was kind of interesting to watch a show from the villain's perspective, instead of being in the dark about who the villain is and what his or her motives are.
I understand where Light was coming from, but I personally couldn't stand him in the later episodes (probably because he was killing off all my favourite characters...)
Thank God I'm not the only one. Looking back on the first three seasons, everything felt like a first draft, from the cliché and one-dimensional bullies, to the unnecessary drama and COMPLETELY forced death in the 3rd season, and the lack of character development and interest on the antagonists' side. Even when Monty Oum was alive, the show had a ton of problems, and I'm not talking about the animation or overabundance of feminism, just that everything felt like they were making shit up as they went and their only rule was to put women in the lime light.
My first, and thus far only viewing of Elfen Lied was with a friend at his apartment who insisted after every episode "the next episode will be less porny" I think he Elfen Lied to me.
william timonen no why would you kill anyone for not liking what you like, that's wrong boi! I wouldn't hurt anyone if they hate Hetalia even though I love it!
I'd rather throw him out in Cathedral as he sneaks in a grenade as he's falling out and then he reflects on his life while a choir sings. And then somehow we both survive the encounter.
That's the entire point of Death Note. Light is an analog for Lucifer himself, his pride and ego is fundemental for booth his character and the metaphors sprinkled through out the show. You are not supposed to like Light your supposed to want him to fail and its dramatic irony whenever one of the good guys fail.
I love death note so much but it did get a bit dull later on. And you do have a point that it is very unsatisfying to see Light win, but that's kind of what made the ending so good in my opinion. I know a lot of people didn't like it but it was so satifying to finally see Light crack under the pressure. The whole series it was alluded that he wasn't exactly right in the head, and when he finally loses it and goes crazy, it's honestly satisfying to see him get his commupence.
Evangelion is one of my favorite anime series of all time. Funnily enough it's for the reasons they disliked it. It was about fundamentally broken people, so watching them fall apart WAS if not development, revelation. Though I have to disagree about Gendo though. For me he went from horrible jerk, to a broken man who was striving for the only person who ever loved him. Also, the last two episodes were nothing but character development. In the end, I think that the people who dislike Eva either can't strongly relate to the characters, or went to it for escapism, rather than an analysis of mental illness and depression. But that's just my personal opinion.
Yeah I feel that them regressing into broken people isn't necessary bad writing. A character doesn't have to be better off than they were at the start in order for them to be written well.
Nothing wrong with escapism, of course, as long as it's not done to excess. But I see your point that Evangelion isn't really the place to go to for that, and I can see how it might be frustrating to people who were looking for that.
Sam the Pony Man I’m a huge fan of EVANGELION for those same reasons myself! Though personally I prefer THE END OF EVANGELION over the final 2 Episodes, as not only do I feel that the film ties up all the lose ends the series had been building up to perfectly, but it actually ranks among my top 5 favorite movies in general! As for Episodes 25 and 26, while they are very interesting, they do have a lot of flaws that prevent me from considering them to be the series’ true ending. But I still enjoyed watching them! They’re a mess, but a very enjoyable mess in my personal opinion!
Agreed @Sam the Pony Man. For me, Evangelion touches upon the human psyche in a lot of ways, especially depression (I mean we all know how famously Anno was going through depression when he created Evangelion.) It's also why I always find it funny how people who hate the series (or even if they like it) talk about Shinji being one of their least favorite characters when he's in my top 3 favorite Eva characters. He's a great representation of how depression can affect someone, how someone who is tired of fighting (against abandonment, against friends, or people they love, against 'fate') has to deal in a world where they have to (obviously it's exaggerated here in the anime with giant mech like things against monstrous 'Angels' but you get my point.) I mean Shinji is not even alone in showing off depression (as it comes in many forms and I see a good chunk of the main cast, especially he, Rei, and Asuka) as showing off different facets that one can have when suffering from depression. Shinji represents hopelessness/on the flip side fighting the hopelessness to regain 'hope', to fight for a better next day. Rei represents numbness/on the flip side fighting against the feeling of not feeling and learning to like and love things again, as the depression fades. Asuka represents anger (using anger to hide raw and deep feelings one is actually feeling)/on the flip side fighting against anger and letting people in again, after the depression has pushed people (whether intentionally or no) away.
Aside from 16-year-olds who think that being edgy and disturbing means that a piece of fiction is good, I thought that people generally thought that Elfen Lied (the anime at least) was bad. I mean I dislike the anime because it's so unfaithful to the manga, ending at the manga's halfway point and killing off characters that didn't die in the manga while keeping characters that did die alive. Not to mention that the anime doesn't really explain the villain's motivations like the manga did and they never really touch on the effects of child rape like the manga did. The name was honestly terrible when compared to the source material. And while the source material is just as disturbing (if not more disturbing), it uses its dark imagery to work with its themes of abuse, Dissociative Identity Syndrome, and loss. The anime, which is made by the infamous Studio Arms, traded all the depth that the manga had for fan service.
Mytru Mara It was very highly praised at first, but over time it seems as if that praise has waned after people have become aware of more of its flaws.
@Otaku I honestly don't think Studio Arms is a terrible company. I mean they ended Brynhildr in the Darkness when the manga should have ended (about halfway through again) and they did make a fairly good adaptation of the Queen's Blade games. You have to remember that they specialize in eroge anime.
@Ruben I think that season 0 is better because it doesn't use plot contrivances. The title "King of Games" makes more sense, as Atem is constantly beating people at a variety of games. it creates a greater comparison when Bakura shows up later on and is just as psychopathic as Yami, but arguably more justifiably so. Season 0 held a constant level of quality, and even if it's far from a perfect show, it has some really good moments that Duel Monsters will call back to. But Duel Monsters, well... Seasons 3 and 4 are honestly really bad and season 1 wasn't all that great either due to Pegasus not really having any motives. Seasons 2 and 5 focus more so on who Atem was and use villains that were, in some way, wronged by him. The villains have understandable (if cliche) motives and we delve deeper into Atem's character. Regardless, you have to look at a series as a whole when deciding whether or not it's good, and Duel Monsters simply isn't good a majority of the time while Season 0 is passable all of the time.
Lil Missy Look, you dont have to be rude about it. It’s not normal for english to not have an s for plural. It’s because most Japanese words dont have a plural indication.
I really enjoyed Death Note myself, and it's actually the series that got me into anime in the first place. I've watched it at least 4 times by now and the thing that keeps it so interesting for me is how fast paced it is, and I absolutely love seeing how the characters plan and figure things out piece by piece. Of course the series isn't perfect though, there aren't too many likeable characters and some of the later episodes were just.... not that exciting. I personally never had that much of a problem with Light, but the character that really put me off was Near. Near is such a paper cut out of L that it's frustrating. And the idea that both Mello and Near had been raised into becoming the successors of L is kinda lame. Other than that I really enjoyed seeing Light plan everything so successfully over the years it almost made me want to see him defeat Near. But the story has to end somewhere, right?
Blue Blaze King Yeah, that makes sense. I have my own theory that Haruhi exsits in the same universe as another anime called The day supernatural battles became common place, just at a different time.
To be fair, Light was probably supposed to be a gigantic piece of shit because it gives a unique experience. While watching the anime, I was almost supporting Light's goal of a cleansed world... then it gets personal. His God complex twists him and we're just watching unable to stop him, unable to speak to the good guys as they die one by one. I can't count how many times I said "You bastard!" while watching the series, and that's honestly very unique. When was the last time the story was told through who would've been a villian? It's probably not your cup of tea, but I just like the unique perspective of Death Note
top 5 anime i like and everyone likes 5: despacito 2 4: corry in the house 3: shrek 420 2: dragon ball x 1: despac-E-ta 420 DX ft. shrek, shaggy, corry, thelegend27, and knuckles & knuckles
the thing about evangelion is, as i read on a youtube comment, "how much you like evangelion is indirectly proportional to how much you like yourself." it really is a show that you can only like and relate to if you have issues i think. i enjoy seeing the brokenness of humans and how... vulnerable they are. and like... i know 14 year old me would have LOVED asuka, but current me does not like her very much, but rather relates more to shinji and rei. i don't know. that's just my two cents. it definitely has it's flaws, i'm not going to deny that, but i can't help but love the spirit of it and the psychological aspects.
oh yeah, i know i need to be careful too, because it can make me end up feeling worse and cause me to go to a really dark place. but one of the reasons i like it so much is because i can point at a character or scene and basically go "there! that's how i feel! just like that!" and i just like that i'm able to do that and finally communicate what's going on inside my head.
Death Note has been one of my top favorites for years. It's odd, but I like Light because he is so awful. I think it was interesting to see him change so drastically bc of the death note's power. I wanted L to win but for some reason was really sad when Light died. The scene where he's running away and passes his old self by the fence still gives me chills. In a morbid way, I liked seeing that contrast of how getting that power changed him. A lot of people would worry about turning into a bad person when given power, money, etc. It's kinda relatable in a very sad way. I can definitely see though why someone would dislike it for his personality lol. Just another viewpoint.
I personally disagree with your number 1, Death Note, but I respect it! Personally, I think you have a better handle on the show than some of the fans out there! Light is meant to be almost exactly as you said, an obnoxious, arrogant kid who thinks he's way better than he actually is. The series shows how his god complex spins out of control and eventually becomes his downfall. There are a lot of fans out there who think he's "cool" or whatever (at least, there were when the manga/anime were new) that completely miss the point. I can understand why it might not be fun to watch a plot that revolves around someone you dislike, but it makes for a different kind of story that I found fascinating. I was actively rooting AGAINST Light, waiting for the time he'd get his comeuppance. It's sad that it wasn't L who got him, but at least he still lost... eventually. I think like 99% of fans agree that the show was at its best when L was alive, though. (And I have a big problem with the poor female representation in the series, but that's another topic entirely.) I think your perspective is very valuable and entirely legitimate, though!
My personaly opinion about the series on the list: 5: never watched 4: the First time I watched Elfen Lied, I don't like it. But this is also 6-7 years ago and I was Really young. I should watch it now again, maybe I like it now 3: The Concept was Not that Bad and the First 3-5 episodes also, but after this episodes, the Story becomes so dumb and Bad, that I have a Really big Problem with the series. But the soundtrack is good 2: Neon Genesis Evangelion.........still My favorite Series of all time (Not only Anime) 1: Death Note had a Really Good Concept and I like the Story. I unterstand why anyone hate Light, but I find it interesting too see 2 different ways about the idea how we can Make the world better. Light becomes a psychophatic Character at the end and this is the point, why we should hate him. But I like it📽 But I respect your opinion🙏🏻 PS: i'm from Germany, so sorry, when the English is Not so Good 🙏🏻
You need to watch haruhi Suyuzmia it's a good show until endless eight the disappearance movie is very underrated though and doesn't get the attention it deserves.
This...wasn't even that bad of a list! This comment is gonna be pretty long though, apologies in advance. Haruhi Suzumiya and Evangelion are probably the only really controversial inclusions here, in my opinion. I haven't seen Haruhi Suzumiya but I have seen the others in some capacity. The only thing I would note about Evangelion is that a national tragedy in the form of a sarin gas attack happened in Japan while the series was running, so the story had to be entirely rewritten halfway through to avoid story elements that could come off as insensitive in the wake of the tragedy, so the way that the personalities of the characters deteriorates, as you noted, is in part because of Hideaki Anno's own levels of stress and deteriorating mental state. The budget wasn't terribly high for these parts, either. So the anime ending up very "emo" wasn't even intended at the start, but circumstances caused it to turn out that way. It's very interesting to ponder how different the world of anime would look today if the story didn't have to be rewritten, and if Anno's mental state were different. I don't feel Death Note is that controversial because I know a lot of people who could go either way on it. I personally didn't care for Death Note mainly because of Light, yes, but also because it felt like it was telling such an important, meaningful story when in actuality, the only way for Light to *actually* accomplish his goals would be for him to not actually kill "criminals", but to kill corrupt politicians and CEOs, the people with the power to change the living conditions of the common people so that there would be less crime in general, but don't because it doesn't suit their needs. *For some reason*, the show probably isn't comfortable with endorsing political assassinations as a morality choice. Elfen Lied, as I recall, was extremely well-received at the time but it was essentially a Linkin Park AMV made into an actual anime--all edge and style with no substance. As time has gone on, I feel like its good reputation has worn off, and it's generally regarded as being the edgelord anime it actually is. And then, there's...*sigh* Sword Art Online. It's not THE worst anime ever made, but it's probably the worst ongoing anime by far. It has the effect of its popularity exposing more people to how terrible it is. It has a lot of incredibly vocal haters, ranging from Mother's Basement to Digibro and then some on this site alone. I was immediately turned off by the very first episode, with the way the cartoonishly evil supervillain just plot-dumped his motivations on everyone and treated death as such a casual thing. Reki Kawahara couldn't write his way out of a cardboard box with no sides. It's just incredibly atrocious, but people are of course allowed to like whatever they like! tl;dr Excellent video, and I actually agree with the majority of your views! But you explained them all very thoroughly, so even if I didn't, I'd happily be able to understand both of y'all's criticisms!
Death Note is still an EPIC. Like it or hate it, the whole point of the series is to make you FEEL. Whether you hate Light or Love L, as long as it invoked EMOTIONS (That is what makes an amazing series). I loved Death Note, and I have tried to re-watch it, but after knowing how it all ends, its VERY difficult--nigh impossible to re-watch this series.. Light Yagami, was supposed to be The Beloved Hero who later turns Antihero along the way by making bad decisions that corrupt his moral compass. Albeit he does get arrogant and starts to abuse his power, as an Antihero who began with GOOD intentions I can't seem but to still like the guy and follow him to the end. I just can't see how SOME people get blinded by their deeply ingrained sense of morality to HATE Light as the main character and instead vote for L because he represents the side of the greater good. I could never understand why people who can't enjoy a good ANTIHERO.
I really enjoyed Death Note until the death of L. The next part with Near and Mello was just dull and uninteresting. They just weren't fun to watch and honestly it ended up ruining the manga for me. I haven't even watched the anime and gave the series to charity 'cos I knew I'd never read it again. That being said, I did really enjoy Light and L as characters. Hated Misa, though, and couldn't stand Near or Mello in the end.
Reicero EXACTLY! Death Note is one of the first anime’s I watched. All shows have flaws, but to me, Death Note’s flaws were very, very minimal. The ending was really the only disappointing part and L’s death could’ve been brought about better in my opinion; it was too sudden (if that makes sense)
Maybe because that's not what an antihero is? An antihero is a hero that lacks some of the hero's regular attributes. He may be a coward, he may be unskilled, he may used underhanded tactics, he may be rude, he may be shy, but at the end of it, he saves the day. Eren Jagger is an antihero, Piccolo is an antihero, Shinji is an antihero, the Straw Hats are antiheros, Saitama is an antihero, Jotaro and Joseph are antiheros. Light is just a villain with God complex. Even before he got the Death Note, he believed himself to be pure and above the rest of humanity. And his intentions where decent for what, one episode? People don't like Light because maybe most of us don't enjoy with the suffering of the innocent and those who seek justice? I highly doubt that is a case of getting blinded by the sense of morality, and even if it was the case, it's far better than getting blinded by greed and power. Just making you feel is the bare basics of any product of any and all products of media, not the top. The top is telling an appealing, interesting, well developed story. Death Note is not special in that regard
though I initially liked it at first even I can admit that all of it's hate is completely justifiable I think Ordinal Scal was done better than the entire series IMO
I found that I actually enjoyed the first half of season 1 of SAO however the second half just became weird and then I was horrified at how they treated asuna and the weird relationship that kirito had with his sister not to mention how OP he is.
same. I really like the concept and the animation, but then alfheim happened and then, the scene in alicization happened I have a question: DO PEOPLE LIKE WATCHING THIS?!
>Sword Art Online
>anime I hate that everyone else likes
Josh...you do know Sword Art Online is basically universally loathed by most anime fans right?
Also, everything that happened in Elfen Lied was NOT just for shock. They were a chain of events that led to Yuka breaking mentally and going insane like she did, aka a MAIN PLOT POINT.
yes, there is. I mean there are ppl who still defend the shit outta SAO.
Kenshin 811 I said most anime fans. The common opinion is that SAO is terribly written. I didn't say SAO has no fans, because I know it does.
we know it sucks. Really sad this mistake of nature got 3 seasons, 1 spin-off, 1 movie, and 4 irl video games. ._.
Kenshin 811 A1 has money so sadly they can keep the series going
OMG..THANK U!,SO MUCH!!
Simply being a subversion doesn't make something good though.
@@robertharris6092 True. But that's not why Death note is good. It's a well-executed story with a unique concept.

LavenousForever Robyn probably convinced him to put it on. XD
Ryan Laughlin lmao true
Believe it or not, it still has a lot of fans.
Bunch of video games, movies and merchandise.
Most people who like it are casual anime viewers.
Actually, most people mainly hate season 2 from what I hear, but everyone I know who's watched SAO, love it.
Light is so fucking annoying
_ teriyaktastic Pretty much. He went mad with power and just started killing anyone who was in the way.
Jenny Akers Indeed. Dude was highly intelligent I'll give him that. But his arrogance though.
Hating Light Yagami is like hating Eric Cartman. You love to hate them and see their downfall, except light yagami’s defeat is a slow burn rather than getting his own medicine every episode
True but Light’s dialogues can be really cringe worthy at times tho
@@stinkymrsnow.............. "I'll take a potato chip... And EAT IT!"

I despise Light Yagami as a person but I love him as a character. Also I personally still love Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Trevdawg Productions the only character that I don’t like in Evangelion is Asuka Langley.
Shinji is stupid and I don't like him
All I can say is...get in the Eva, Shinji!
Light Yagami is someone the character is not supposed to root for.
He’s pretty much the villain of the series.

"PUPPIES!" (In Jerry Lawler's voice)
PUPPIES! Just hope it doesn't involve killing them like in Elfen Lied. 😟
PUPPIES!
Ah the you just don't understand argument a widely used tactic by the eva fandom
I took a chip.....
...A N D A T E I T !
ArtMun Studios it just seemed like he didn't have a motive
The fact that he found it as a naive, arrogant 17-year old, is the reason why he turned out such a prick. If he had found it as a responsible adult, he would not have seen the world as such a black-and-white place. Death Note is a tragedy of the wrong things happening to a potentially good person at the wrong place during the wrong time. His descent to becoming a criminal, the very thing he swears to destroy, is one of the reasons I consider Death Note a masterpiece.
true
ArtMun Studios true, not all protagonists have to act like a good guy but we need at least something that's decent about them in order to actually give a fuck about them. It's the same issue I have with Kratos.
His motive was to cleanse the world and become the God of the new world

.hack also wasn't as shallow about humans as Sword Art Online was. I feel like this is a big problem for me in modern media in general is that humans feel like they've come to the point where they're so obsessed with their own species that it feels like nothing else is allowed to be good anymore. Even when a non-human character is good, it's usually temporary and they turn out to be evil later on.

SAO is great. As long as you accept the abridged version as the one true canon.

Sadly abridged is just fan fiction...
And Reki kawahara's writing is still shit...
I heard SAO progressive is pretty good. I havn't checked it out myself yet though.
Abridged is funny but og SAO IS THE BEST
Opinion respected as always Strider.

like that one scene in the simpsons when ned flanders loses his shit
The Goblin
Yep. I agree with both you and Strider.
+The Goblin
I fully agree with you.
Nothing more, and nothing less.”
In this Nate (or Near) was correct.

I watched the whole thing. Even though I hate Mellow’s guts. And he’s supposed to be a good guy?
Gola245 This anime is far from being boring. They managed to make Light eating a potato chip engaging. It’s a great anime, with a great soundtrack, plot, and voice acting. If you have trouble reading subtitles really fast then i’d recommend the dub. It’s just as good as the sub.
I liked the anime's first half, but the second half did fall flat for me.
That is true.

I still think DBZ is the best anime. But then again... I'm a filthy casual.
NET Alliance - Star Wars Fun Check out Jimmy Neutron. That's the best anime ever in my opinion
Cory in the House is the Super Saiyan of best anime.

He won.)
The 3 Japanese live action adaptation films handled it better
yeah but u minion of satan forgot that your master satan is gonna be defeat by Jesus once and for all
Light is the protagonist and L is the antagonist.

Faith That is why I watched it. I don't mind being in the minority.
I actually really liked Light. But honestly the Manga ending was A LOT better.
Jory Porteous I tried to read the manga but I just couldn't get into it like I did the show.
The manga I like to read is more light-hearted and slice of life type stuff. 😅

I totally agree with you. Besides, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who loved those last two episodes that most people hated.
He's a great representation of how depression can affect someone, how someone who is tired of fighting (against abandonment, against friends, or people they love, against 'fate') has to deal in a world where they have to (obviously it's exaggerated here in the anime with giant mech like things against monstrous 'Angels' but you get my point.)
I mean Shinji is not even alone in showing off depression (as it comes in many forms and I see a good chunk of the main cast, especially he, Rei, and Asuka) as showing off different facets that one can have when suffering from depression.
The dog scene made me cry so hard :(
The Dislikers: I'll Take Toxic Patato Chip, *AND DIVOUR IT!*
@Otaku
I honestly don't think Studio Arms is a terrible company. I mean they ended Brynhildr in the Darkness when the manga should have ended (about halfway through again) and they did make a fairly good adaptation of the Queen's Blade games. You have to remember that they specialize in eroge anime.
Mytru Mara The people that think Toei Yugioh (Season Zero) is better than Duel Monsters because it's "dark and edgy".
@Ruben
I think that season 0 is better because it doesn't use plot contrivances.

Finally, an anime related video
P/S : The title reminds me of some n.critic videos
There's a theory about Haruhi Suzumiya that states that Haruhi doesn't have any abilities and the person with powers is Kyon.
I like the theory that the entire SOS brigade is all in Kyon's mind
PhantomStrider That's cool never heard that one.
Yeah I always believed that Kyon has no idea of his ability and haruhi is just a manifestation of his powers
Blue Blaze King Yeah, that makes sense. I have my own theory that Haruhi exsits in the same universe as another anime called The day supernatural battles became common place, just at a different time.
That’s actually a cool theory
To be fair, Light was probably supposed to be a gigantic piece of shit because it gives a unique experience. While watching the anime, I was almost supporting Light's goal of a cleansed world... then it gets personal. His God complex twists him and we're just watching unable to stop him, unable to speak to the good guys as they die one by one. I can't count how many times I said "You bastard!" while watching the series, and that's honestly very unique. When was the last time the story was told through who would've been a villian? It's probably not your cup of tea, but I just like the unique perspective of Death Note
When you realize that it’s 2020 and Sword Art Online takes place two years later.

the thing about evangelion is, as i read on a youtube comment, "how much you like evangelion is indirectly proportional to how much you like yourself." it really is a show that you can only like and relate to if you have issues i think. i enjoy seeing the brokenness of humans and how... vulnerable they are. and like... i know 14 year old me would have LOVED asuka, but current me does not like her very much, but rather relates more to shinji and rei. i don't know. that's just my two cents. it definitely has it's flaws, i'm not going to deny that, but i can't help but love the spirit of it and the psychological aspects.
oh yeah, i know i need to be careful too, because it can make me end up feeling worse and cause me to go to a really dark place. but one of the reasons i like it so much is because i can point at a character or scene and basically go "there! that's how i feel! just like that!" and i just like that i'm able to do that and finally communicate what's going on inside my head.

Han Lee Same!

Those puppy sounds tho.. my heart 😭
My personaly opinion about the series on the list:
5: never watched
4: the First time I watched Elfen Lied, I don't like it. But this is also 6-7 years ago and I was Really young. I should watch it now again, maybe I like it now
3: The Concept was Not that Bad and the First 3-5 episodes also, but after this episodes, the Story becomes so dumb and Bad, that I have a Really big Problem with the series. But the soundtrack is good
2: Neon Genesis Evangelion.........still My favorite Series of all time (Not only Anime)
1: Death Note had a Really Good Concept and I like the Story. I unterstand why anyone hate Light, but I find it interesting too see 2 different ways about the idea how we can Make the world better. Light becomes a psychophatic Character at the end and this is the point, why we should hate him. But I like it📽
But I respect your opinion🙏🏻
PS: i'm from Germany, so sorry, when the English is Not so Good 🙏🏻
It's okay
I also gave Evangelion a 10/10, the End movie was also great.
You need to watch haruhi Suyuzmia it's a good show until endless eight the disappearance movie is very underrated though and doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Evangelion is complete utter fucking garbage
Sword art online is one of the worst anime ever made. It’s horribly unwatchable
Mcyxof yeah they were annoying af
Reicero is
Reicero EXACTLY!

Yes and I'm one of them.

Yes. Its popularity is WHY there's such a huge trend of people shitting on it.
I found that I actually enjoyed the first half of season 1 of SAO however the second half just became weird and then I was horrified at how they treated asuna and the weird relationship that kirito had with his sister not to mention how OP he is.
