Steve shows us that every composer is first and foremost a listener. We all listen to a lot of different stuff and borrow everything that seems attractive or worthy of development. Nobody is creative in a vacuum.
In the 1970s and 1980s there were a number of composers who felt that the super-serial craft of composition had run its course. As in all musical revolutions the overly complex is replaced by the simple, and that is how minimalism got started. I was one of those who experimented with music that was not overly chromatic and rhythmically obtuse. We searched for something that had the purity of Webern but the accessability of Copland. Steve was one of the more inventive and successful writers in this new style and the attractiveness of his sonorities inspired many of his contemporaries, me included. Each new music composition is an experiment, so sometimes you are more successful than others. Steve has had many hits and a few near misses. Recently, I composed an homage to Steve that you can hear at soundcloud.com/stephen-jablonsky/petite-homage-2018-woodwind-quintet-and-piano

I do not really know much Radiohead (other than their big pop hits) but I bought this album today because Steve Reich is one of the best living composers in my opinion. Radio Rewrite did not disappoint. In fact, it is easily the best piece of music I have heard this year.

I am surprised he had never listened to any Radiohead. I would think a fair amount of their work from Kid A on would be up his alley, as well as some of their members' side projects.

2x5 Vakula Version. Its a great remix of 2x5 III. Fast, also Under the Weather (an Elecrtic Counterpoint remix), and Godspeed Remix (a Nagoya Guitars remix)

i don't consider him a fool, though.... he has listened to radiohead. '' Expecting Steve Reich to have listened to Radiohead is like expecting Radiohead to have listened to your favorite local band.'' no it isn't. my comment wasn't made in complete seriousness, matey
