    the value lost is insane, the historical loss is so sad. These houses at one time were the finest build ever. these were not plain jane 3 bedroom houses. Look at the brick work that you never see used today. the new Mchouses today are a total joke compared to the workmanship that was put into these grand old houses. a horrible loss

      I started to become a mason (brick, block, stone, cement) within the last year and when in Detroit, or other old towns and cities in Michigan, I marvel at the old brickwork. Or stonework. I never noticed things like that until I started learning it.
      I will tell you this, though, these old houses all have a big problem. Asbestos and lead.

    As many times as I've seen these videos of Detroit, I'll never get over the juxtaposition of these neighborhoods. These "ghettos" are a FAR cry from the actual concrete jungles of Baltimore, DC, and Philly to Jersey, NYC, and Boston where all of the dilapidated homes are all shitty concentrated swaths of row homes and apartment buildings. BUT Detroit ghettos are like suburbs WITH NICE HOMES and front yards. It's so odd. These brick and mortar homes are beautiful but in the middle of the badlands of Detroit. It blows my mind. I really hope Detroit bounces back one fine day and these homes can be renovated and liveable again.

    • @UTxTheArchangel
      @UTxTheArchangel 3 года назад +6

      @@Hanover-ek4jy Simply put, starts with Politics and money. The big reason for what happened to Detroit and many major US cities is poverty, education, and unemployment. When those factories closed a lot of people were without work, some moved out of city to find work, others couldn't afford to uproot their family. Then you have the crack epidemic hitting major cities, and Detroit's government getting more and more corrupt. The city started not having the money for the school system. Meaning after school programs had to be cut. Meaning more kids just on the street while their parents worked or was doped out. You also had parents that had to quit their jobs bc their kids have no sitter since the parent could no longer put them in an after school program.
      All of that happening, ppl with nothing turn to desperate measures, crime. Poverty creates crime.
      Solve unemployment, solve poverty, repair the education system, the city can start bouncing back. A lot of that starts with the people in power.

    Serious question, from someone who has never visited Detroit- how on earth can entire blocks/streets be abandoned? These houses with broken windows and open/broke doors seem like they were so nice at one point. What a shame. I assume it’s not a priority to restore these houses/streets, because the city is so poor? I may sound ignorant, but I really am curious.

    • @michaelduncan6185
      @michaelduncan6185 3 года назад +9

      It's all about investment. When the investment left the neighborhood due to numerous socio-economic reasons, poverty and crime grew, and therefore the communities were unlivable, so people who could moved out. The houses were then abandoned and were left to decay. The only way to bring a neighborhood like this back up is for there to be investment, but many things need to change in the city and in our economy for inner city slums to get the kind of investment they need to bounce back.

      It's not that dangerous. You don't deal with random people who call a restaurant. Customers have to set up accounts in advance with valid credit cards so their identities are known, and the delivery drivers don't handle cash.

      Maybe so... But, there are areas of the city ( name any city ) where nobody will take orders from or deliver to...
      And signs that say that the driver "carries no cash or less than $20.00" stops assaults, robberies, and worse...
      Then, there are carjackings and car thefts while deliveries are being made...
      There was a case in Washington DC where a food delivery driver had his car stolen by 2 teen girls who maced him and forced him from his car and took off with it as he held on and was dragged... They would up wrecking the car and killing him... And they were worried about their smartphones that were in the car...
