I remember in a Q&A forever ago someone asked how to get started making videos. And you said to “Just start making stuff.” I did that and let me tell you. In 3 months I’ve garnered an audience of over 300 people. So even though it’s late, thank you for that advice ❤ Edit: Wow, so a lot of people showed up in support! I really appreciate that. So if you do show up and watch something, or even just leave a comment, thank you.
Love the positivity. I've been wanting to scratch that itch, and I've put it off for different reasons, and it's been 6 months lol. I'm trying to push past the nerves (?) before the end of the year lol
Hey Jake, if you're eating a slice and a piece of pepperoni falls on your shirt, what percentage of the time do you turn to whoever you're with and say "Oh boy, looks like pizza's on me!" and then wink and shoot the finger guns?
My first game was Combat on the 2600 at somebody's house. I was born in 1974. I was 6 or 7. You can not imagine just how in awe I was at being able to PLAY on a TV. And it had SO MANY MODES. I received a Colecovision for xmas -- maybe 1982? Or 1983? So the first game I ever played at home was Donkey Kong for Coleco. And, luckily, they also made the Expansion Module which let me play 2600 games too. And with the video game crash my father was picking up games from bins every week. The only game my father (born in 1942) ever played in his entire life (he passed in 2021) was Dragster on the 2600 -- and he was the best at it. He equaled the best time that was published in an early gaming magazine of the time. I don't think I really LOVED videogames until the NES though. Metroid, Zelda, SMB, Mega Man, Castlevania -- the usual suspects in those first couple of years, but also Shadowgate, Nobunaga's Ambition, Final Fantasy, etc. Incidentally, I was obviously older when that X-Men fighting game came out but I have a particular memory of playing that at an arcade one night with a buddy of mine and this dude walked up and challenged me -- and I wiped the floor with him. That was a cool game!
My dad was and still is obsessed with Atari (from back in the day) and he got the 2600 for all of us to enjoy together, the first game I ever played was Smurf, Rescue from Gargamel’s Castle. I also have vivid memories of a game where a lion is collecting fruit and every time a piece of fruit is collected a monotone voice says “a banana”, “a cherry” and so on. To this day I don’t remember if it was a fever dream or actually real, I haven’t been able to find it.
My first gaming experience was Keystone Kapers and Space Fury on the CBS ColecoVision in around 1995. It was my Nanna who was a gamer way back in the 80's and she gave me a lifelong passion for games and movies, I still can't believe it was my 65 yo Nanna who showed me the way. RIP you beautiful lady.
How do you feel about how negative the gaming community has become? 7/10s being the worst game ever, culture wars, etc. I make it a habit to not fully trash talk a game I've never played. But it seems like people take one look at a trailer or review and decide a game is the most awful game ever, the devs are losing their touch, etc. I really love gaming and want to have more positive conversations but seems like the negativity is all I hear these days.
I love these kinds of videos. It makes me feel more like having a direct conversation with ya. I particularly enjoyed your first gaming memory. I would love hearing more stories like that. Alll of your memories with different games.
My first gaming experience was a cross between playing a Super Nintendo in my grandparents basement and a Playstation my dad bought for us. I can remember playing Super Mario, Battleship, Mortal Combat 2, Street Fighter 2, Terminator 2, Super Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back, and some off road racing game. On Playstation there was Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2, Need for Speed hot pursuit, Road Rage, Tomb Raider 2, Spyro, Syphon Filter, and maybe a half dozen others. Also had a disc that had a bunch of demos on it for other games. Then I got a portable Playstation for my birthday I got Medal of Honor as my first game for it. Also played Incoming!, a few of 3DOs Army Men games, a game where you played as model airplanes from WW2 that was cool, and some other miscellaneous ones on PC for a short while. Miss those simple days.
I always love your take on games. Positive, informed, fun, and always for the love of games. Great Q&A Question: What are some of your video game music scores? Music that not only perfectly embodies and underscores the gameplay, but something you’d listen to on its own?
My first game was Super Mario Bros. But like you, I was in awe when a local bakery had the arcade machine with X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom. I loved hearing the VAs from the show performing the attack names
For me it was Lego Batman and New Super Mario Wii. My cousin and I played those games to death. In that era, we played games on the original Xbox, Wii, and GameCube. Battlefront I and II, The Incredibles Rise of the Underminer, Star Wars the Force Unleashed, the Lego games, Halo, and Super Mario Galaxy games were highlights during this era. Good times
I admire your ability to keep your cynicism behind closed doors. I am naturally cynical and pessimistic, and I try to keep a chill demeanor but it’s difficult to do it all the time. You always come off as excited even though the industry you cover frequently has things to be down about. That’s why KT and I love watching your content. It’s so easy to focus on the negatives and despite you feeling cynical on the inside, all you give us is positive vibes. Keep being cool, dude!
The outro got me for real lmao. I was literally taking my gloves off to find another one of these to watch. Love watching your videos Jake. Thanks for making these and take care!
Thanks Jake for your videos and just being you. Hearing you talk about things we're all so passionate about, and so positively, is really inspiring. This vid made me reminisce about my history with gaming, good times 😁
My first game, I think was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on PS1. When I was about 3 years old. I especially loved it because Spider-Man is a guest character in the game. And Spider-Man (2002) is also the first movie I remember watching in theatres, also when I was 3 years old.
Hey Jake, you've said a couple of times that you're an art and history nerd, so I've got ask: Do you have a favorite historical painting, and if so, what is it?
Honestly now that you have kinda done a deep dive on an early child hood core memory, I would love to hear more biographical stuff. As tbh I really come to these videos / gameranx because I have grown to “know” you so much over the years and it’s like a one sided chat with a friend every time I load one of these vids. And as your friends! Tell us about yourself :)
Arcade Videogames are the way people used to get into it. Grocery stores, Pizzerias, Bowling alleys and actual Arcades...and being pre-internet it was extremely local. I remember being REALLY good at Yie Ar Kung-Fu at the National Grocery near my house.
The first game I have a memory of seeing was the first prince of Persia and I was obsessed ever since, took me a long time to get a pc and finally be able to play something. Dune 2000 was the first game I got.
With VR's recent moment in the spotlight with games like Batman, and Metro, what are some of the smaller games you enjoyed that aren't big/popular enough for their own videos? I remember you name dropping Boneworks in on of your reviews.
Agreed 100% on cod4 multiplayer. Haven't played cod multiplayer seriously since then. Though that might be because of life. Thanks for the ep, love your videos and gameranx!
My question would be how you fell about sports games? I feel there is a big divide between those who play them and those who don’t, especially with the feeling of getting hosed by buying what is essentially the same game every year. My earliest gaming was almost exclusively sports and racing until I played the elder scrolls IV in 2006. College football has always had a special place in my heart specifically so I was glad to hear it was coming back.
Pacific Drive has been my all time fave game this year by miles. Played through it 3 times and I'm back on my 4th run. Can't get enough. Just you, the janky wagon, and trying to not die. Doing the Iron Wagon run rn.
I'll mention the game that got me back into gaming after many years away. An Xxbox wound up living with us for a few months in 2006, and I bought a used copy of this little game I'd heard about called Halo. The opening that just throws you in hooked me right away, the soundtrack blew me away, and then.... the Freakin' Flood! What a game!
First video game: Atari PONG Home Console My parents bought the Pong console for Christmas, 1975, when it was featured in the Sears Christmas Catalog. I was 5.
googling yourself is a hilarious flex. as if you don't have photos of yourself in your camera roll lmao. glad to hear your doing well man. ur an important voice in this community
I was born in 1995 and my first game was the original Spyro the Dragon. Relatively basic answer, but just a perfect and in a lot of ways, revolutionary platformer. I remember being particularly interested in how dreamy the environments felt, like everything felt bigger than it was whereas modern games feel bigger than they have any justification to be. Wonderful series, and I hope Toys for Bob can make a true Spyro 4 at some point
We are alike on some ways so its good to hear you are doing good. Your video's actually do alot for people like you when they are feeling down. I hope that if you read this it can be one of those things that make you smile even for a bit.
I’m dating myself way too much, but mine was table tennis in 1976 when my dad’s buddy brought his Magnavox Odyssey over. We hooked it up to the old RCA tv. Ugh I’m old :/
My first experience seeing and playing video games was Xmas eve night and my grandfather got my grandmother an Atari 2600. My grandmother fired up Combat! and Pac Man and a few of my family members battled all night. It was a night I'll never forget. (I believe the 2600 came out in '77 or '78, but that gaming night was in '82).
I had watched my dad play some shooters on PlayStation 2 but the game that really showed me the potential of gaming was Spider-Man 2. Technically I played the first one as well but didn't get as into it as I got into Spider-Man 2. Such a great game! I also remember my Mom letting me get my first T rated game which was Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I was so nervous she was going to see something she didn't think was appropriate and not let me play it but after the opening scene where Nick Fury says "what the hell" and I sheepishly looked at her, she just gives me a look and smiles as if I had gone through a rite of passage! Such fond memories of those games. Do you think they'd ever revive that series? If they do I have a feeling it would be a live service game, which I wouldn't entirely be against.
My first memory is actually playing Frostbite on an Atari 2600. I was born in 89 so Atari was around for a while. But the first games I remember playing over and over was Donkey Kong, Rocknroll racing in Super Nintendo, and later MGS, GTA1 and Harvest Moon for PS1. Also The Sims 1 for PC
I remember playing the X-Men 4-player beat em up arcade game as a kid. It was so epic! The X-Men cartoon show was my favorite and having that combined with video games was incredible.
First game was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the 64. Then around 7 or 8 I got a PS2. My older sister had a PS1 but had never let me play it. Then one day she brought out her PS1 collection that was in a cd plastic case. She had like 80+ games. Which meant I now had years of fun to be had. Spyro, Resident Evil, Hogs of War, Silent Hill, Jak and Daxter, Tenchu Stealth Assassins, the list goes on
The first time I saw MVC 1 was at an arcade in Florida in the 2003, my grandpa the mad lad that he can be gave me $100 in quarters and I couldn’t stop playing
@@JakeBaldino first game in a while were i don't skip the dialogue, Red mentions Bannockburn in the game, as it where i live i totally did the "Dicaprio point at t.v meme" in real life 😄
I did the same. the gameplay could use some work, but the story and the ideas were great. I would be there if they ever made a prequel or another game in that world.
Is that an Oh Deer Diner coffee thermos on your shelf over there? I fell in love with the Remedy Universe when Control came out, and I just recently finished AW2, and loved that as well. RIP James McCaffrey. He had recently become one of my favorite voices in gaming.
Hey Jake, I've had an idea about a video game stuck in my head for years now. It all revolves around a small island in the Pacific Ocean (it has a history of a double murder, ship wrecks, ghosts, etc). I was wondering if there were any real life locations you want to see in video games that have yet to be explored in the medium?
Bro. X-Men COTA was my first PS1 game as a kid. Me and little brother rocked that game so hard. He would button mash and get specials off consistently and I would struggle to land one. Good times.
Hey Jake! Hi from a fellow New Yorker (Hudson Valley here). You always talk movies and games, curious what kind of music you dig. Genre, top 3-5 artists, anything like that.
Hey Jake! Always watch your videos, love your enthusiasm! Do you actually mean it when you say "pizza's on me"? I'd be down to grab a slice when I go to NY, and hey if you ever come to Montréal, I know a lot of amazing restaurants and coffeeshops. So to you, good sir, I say "croissant's on me!"
As a fellow New Yorker I really appreciate good pizza, so I'm curious what is your favorite style of pizza? Also have you ever considered making your own pizza from scratch? And on the subject of cooking, have you ever considered buying and making recipes from a video game cookbook? Cuz apparently these recipe books aren't just fluff, or so I've heard.
First game was a game called "Munch Man" in a TI-99 home computer was a cartridge based system that has atari like games. And this one was a spin on pac man. Each level had different "ghosts" and each level was FASTER and harder than the next. This had to of been in the mid to late 80s
Here's a question; What's the first game you remember being blown away by it's graphics and thought to yourself "Graphics can't get any better than this."? For me, embarrassingly, it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 after coming from the NES. The colors were popping, the parallaxing background added depth (compared to the NES). Music/sound was so much better (don't think I would agree to that now but I was like 7 or 8 at the time). 🤣
I wish I could remember the first game I played, but I was 5 years old. I know it was on the Commodore C64. Maybe "The Duel Test Drive II", Maniac Mansion, Sid Meyer's Pirates, Legacy of the Ancients? Probably one of those. My favorite was Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. I still load up ScummVM and replay it every decade or so.
Jake, I’ll self plug, online coach, gamer, and PhD student. If you need any help with the working out, nutrition, or sorting out what to take from different stuff related to it. I’d be more than willing to answer any questions. You’ve been putting out content for me to watch for free for years, I’ll answer any questions you have!
My first video game was "Top Gun" on the NES, at my parents friend's house. I still remember today how difficult it was to land on the aircraft carrier at the end of a mission. It was mind blowing, and afterward, I harassed my parents every day to buy me a Nintendo with Super Mario bros 3 ^^.
I remember that when I was about 7 I played my first game on a Megason (I think it was called that), the game was Duck Hunt with a gun toy that connects to the console, it was a magical experience at age 7
One of my first games was the Thomas and Friends on Time Plug and Play TV game. Another one was Madagascar (2005), really solid game with lots of very ”game-like” stuff in it. Love it a lot.
❤ Love this Q&A segment, you’re a good dude for doing it. I would ask, does it weird you out to know so many people know you, but you have no idea who they are? Asking, because I’m thinking of doing content creation….as a 40yr old 😅
Hey Jake!! Long time fan!! So now that actors have been appearing in video games and delving into our world my question is what actor would you absolutely love to see in a game and with which game?? I think when Far Cry had rumors that Cillian Murphy was going to play a part possibly the villain that was it for me!
With the amount of time left in the year and with you most likely having a good idea of your game(s) of the year, what were some games you played that you didn’t like, but others seemed to a lot?
Hey Jake! Was wondering why you and Gameranx didn’t cover Slitterhead? It’s really unique and weird, it feels like a breath of fresh air nowadays. It seems right up your alley!
With Ryan Payton saying on your podcast they’d like to do an Arkham shadow 2, what would you like to see them do? Another villain origin story? More Bruce Wayne undercover stuff, Playable bat family (omg give me nightwing ecrisma sticks rn)
I was really young, maybe about 5 or 6, when my family inherited my cousin's old computer (can't remember the model) and it played floppy disks. He had the old Atari Star Wars game but it was on a floppy, and that was probably the first game ever played on my own, in my room, around 1995
the first game game i really remember besides old ms-dos learning games was mario 64. my dad wrote about tech and for the n64/ps1 era and a bit before and after we got like every video game free, japanese stuff, went to a lot of press events, gamecube van came to our driveway, etc. i pawned a lot of them for heroin in the mid 2010s when i was in the shit and right before game prices blew up, kept my super favorites but i regret it constantly. but i remember playing mario 64 in japanese when i was about 3 just trying to figure out what to do and exploring that magical world. i think it made me prioritize good exploration in games for the rest of my life
The first game I can remember playing is the original Star Wars Battlefront II on the PS2. Loved that game to death, and playing the PS5 port made me wonder how I beat the rise of the empire campaign as a child. Shooters without modern aiming are hard 😅

I believe mine was either Super Mario World, or Mortal Kombat 2 on the local arcades. Good times :)
Spyro, Resident Evil, Hogs of War, Silent Hill, Jak and Daxter, Tenchu Stealth Assassins, the list goes on
My mom was into bomberman and Mario bros on NES. I remember Mortal Kombat on Game Boy. Buster Bros!
The first time I saw MVC 1 was at an arcade in Florida in the 2003, my grandpa the mad lad that he can be gave me $100 in quarters and I couldn’t stop playing
If you were stuck in a 4 year time loop for the best games, what 4 years would you pick ? How bout for movies?
Grabbed banishers ghost of new eden on your recommendation, damn its good, feel bad that its not talked about more
some cool storytelling going on in that one.
My earliest gaming memories were Medal of Honor on the PS1 and a demo disc with games like C-12: Final Resistance on it.
What was everyone else’s first game ever/earliest gaming memory? Mine was playing Toy Pop with my mom on the original PlayStation.
Bro. X-Men COTA was my first PS1 game as a kid. Me and little brother rocked that game so hard. He would button mash and get specials off consistently and I would struggle to land one. Good times.
Thanks for the vids, Jake
GTA vice city/NHL 07, the only two games we had for the ps2 and I played them every day till I got a ps3 slim
dedication
Coleco Telstar. Came out in 1977. I had my hands on it in 1978. I was born with a joystick in my hand.
Great that we can now play X-Men children of the atom with the new collection
Everytime I check out a game you recommended, I never get dissapointed
I installed Nine Sols on Friday and I'm having tons of fun with it
People didn't realize duck hunt was two player.
Player two controlled the duck. XD
Good times...
Thanks, Jake! Love you!
Lmao I just got to the end and was actually washing dishes while listening
@JakeBaldino still waiting to hear your thoughts on Alien Romulus, did you enjoy it? Did you have issues with some of the choices they made?
Bro my life changed when I found my barber. I don’t have to tell him anything, he just does it
As a fellow New Yorker I really appreciate good pizza, so I'm curious what is your favorite style of pizza?
My first gaming experience was the original Mario bros on NES at a babysitter.
My first arcade game was when street fighter two came out, and from then I literally still play the exact same game, can't get enough
What is your opinion on this years Game of the Year controversy?
❤ Love this Q&A segment, you’re a good dude for doing it. I would ask, does it weird you out to know so many people know you, but you have no idea who they are? Asking, because I’m thinking of doing content creation….as a 40yr old 😅
“Classicly trained if you will” lol cringe. Love your work. Been watching for years. Keep it up. ❤
Hey Jake! What's your favorite kind of pizza and your fave pizza restaurant? 🍕🫡
Hey, thanks for the warning to dry my hands. That timing was too perfect
😂
Hey Jake, if they were to remake Resident Evil 1, how would you like it to be done? What would you like to see?
Also, how much can you bench press?
congrats for 400k finally
With Ryan Payton saying on your podcast they’d like to do an Arkham shadow 2, what would you like to see them do?
Another villain origin story? More Bruce Wayne undercover stuff, Playable bat family (omg give me nightwing ecrisma sticks rn)
I was really young, maybe about 5 or 6, when my family inherited my cousin's old computer (can't remember the model) and it played floppy disks. He had the old Atari Star Wars game but it was on a floppy, and that was probably the first game ever played on my own, in my room, around 1995
I grew up playing on the NES of my stephbrother. So many great games on there but it really was The Legend of Zelda that was most magical to me!
the first game game i really remember besides old ms-dos learning games was mario 64. my dad wrote about tech and for the n64/ps1 era and a bit before and after we got like every video game free, japanese stuff, went to a lot of press events, gamecube van came to our driveway, etc. i pawned a lot of them for heroin in the mid 2010s when i was in the shit and right before game prices blew up, kept my super favorites but i regret it constantly. but i remember playing mario 64 in japanese when i was about 3 just trying to figure out what to do and exploring that magical world. i think it made me prioritize good exploration in games for the rest of my life
The first game I can remember playing is the original Star Wars Battlefront II on the PS2. Loved that game to death, and playing the PS5 port made me wonder how I beat the rise of the empire campaign as a child. Shooters without modern aiming are hard 😅
thank you for shouting out the lost crown, im still reeling from ubisoft shutting down the team..
Thoughts on the sonic riders series? Honestly feel like it could rival mario kart if it got the treatment it deserved.
It’s crazy to think the game that hooked me was super Mario bros. The game that hooked us all 😂
