When Jimmy White was in a sweet spot, his cueing was so smooth, so intuitive, such a joy to watch. This 147 is legendary and I clearly remember as if it were yesterday seeing it live on BBC television at the time. John Virgo as the commentator...what happened to all these legends? And the hug of Drago... God, I miss those days.
@@ajs41 Very true. But as a spectator of sport, I feel I wouldn't bother to know their relationship status for the gesture. It's because Tony is a legend - having met him personally a few times and once had dinner in a group setting with him (Matchroom Pool 9-ball event in Europe), he is just great - was great to watch as a snooker player - great as a human being, and of course he'd congratulate Jimmy - their styles of snooker are very similar.
Jimmy is an incredible player as we all know ... What I like about him is, he has an edginess and unpredictablity in his playing that is so great to watch. It can also lead him to triumph and downfall. Looking at the big picture, he’s just a great guy to watch and a master of the game of snooker. Long live Jimmy White 🤟
i didnt know about that 147 before today (thanks youtube :p ) and i actually was surprise of the speed and then u realise that its not even close to the record 147 of ronnie ... making it even more crazy... all that said not going to make any compareason or denying tthe fact that jimmy is not as good as ronnie , in that level of play we just have too amazing champion that we all can be happy to be able to watch play and master the game .
@@guetali Yes Jimmy is probably as quick in amongst the balls but just pauses slightly now and then working stuff out.Surely this is one of the fastest made though?
The way he addresses the ball, and his style of stroke and shot. Pure Jimmy at his best. Those balls thud into the pockets like darts in the treble twenty. Perfect.
Its easy to forget, with all the often deserved hype around Ronnie, that Jimmy was another "most gifted player to ever pickup a cue", we used to marvel at his technique is accurate positional play and potting. I dont think there is another player who hits the white so low on nearly all his shots, if i did that i would mis-cue every time lol. Never foget and its no disrespect to Hendry or Ronnie, that if Hendry had not been around, Jimmy would have won a few world titles and a lot more too.
Without doubt the best ever player not to have won a world championship. He just couldn’t quite pull it off, Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan were the main reasons why. Any other era and Jimmy would surely have bagged a few championships at the Crucible. That was an amazing clearance, a lot of tricky shots played beautifully and quickly. As for Tony Drago, an incredible show of sportsmanship and class. You don’t see this shown in any other sport, excepting possibly in golf, Tony is a top bloke!!!
Jimmy or ding junhui the greatest to never win a world title definetly ding still got a shot but seems to be declining now if he works hard at his game he's still got a shot I suppose
I must admit, I used to question Jimmy's bottle, Especially with those world final losses. But bottle or no bottle this guy is definitely a fighter. Playing to a high standard all these years and keeping his snooker game alive, That is an incredible achievement for his career.Well done Jimmy.
6:18 this shot is amazing! The way he controlled the cue ball's position after the shot-at a such difficult pot- is incredibile! Almost certain he is 1 of the top 5 players in history in top of the cue ball's positioning after the shot!
Nice to see the grimace on Tony's face when Jimmy runs out of ideal position on a break of 80. Great sportsmanship from him to want his opponent to make the 147 once the frame was lost
I remember after the match, Jimmy saying what a lovely person Tony Drago was. He said that there were some players on the circuit who would of been willing him to miss, but that Tony and a few others would be happy for him. I loved watching Jimmy White playing when he was at his peak. A great talent.
Jimmy's 147 has to be at the very top of a high class list of Maximum breaks. Some of the shots he had to make as well as controlling the cue ball to keep his break going are incredible. What a truly gifted talent and entertainer Mr Jimmy White the 'Whirlwind' ❤
Much as it hurts to say it, that shot around the 5:09 mark is indicative of how he blew so many chances to win the World Championship. So many times over the years I've watched him play the greatest snooker EVER then he plays one to make you go 'what?...what are you doing?'.
Love both player. They both have it's unique style that we don't see very often in nowadays snooker. Hurricane Higgins, white, Sullivan, Drago the kind of risk taking to entertain the crowd we don't see that anymore.
It's crazy to think that Cliff Thorborn was the only player to make a Maxi at the Crucible in the 80s, Jimmy's was the 2nd 147 at at the World's, and Hendry & O'Sullivan made the other two in the 90s.
It's absolutely brilliant all around Jimmy's 147, obviously, but I love Tony Drago's attitude equally as much. You could see during the break, he was willing Jimmy to succeed
Tony Drago used to stay at the seaside hotel I worked at when a student. No one else on the staff knew who he was! He was a delight to serve. He used to have Coke Cola with his breakfast!
Jimmy is defo one of the best snooker players ever. Here's my top 6 in no particular order: Jimmy White Alex Higgins Steve Davis Stephen Hendry Ronnie O'Sullivan Mark Williams Obviously Selby and John Higgins came close as well there but for raw talent and what each player did for the game of Snooker that's my top 6.
His lifestyle hindered him somewhat could of won more. Love watching him most memorable match was 1982 vs Alex higgins in semi final, when Higgins made a 69 clearance to stay in the match an eventually win probably one of the best breaks in crucible history. Seen that when I'd just started playing age 12.
as youtube give me the possibility to watch this one (thanks for that :p ) as a non expert to those game like snooker , darts , bowling . can we classify the level of difficulty comparing 147 in snooker, 501 9 darts finisher in darts and a 300 in bowling ? or just the 147 in snooker is just by far the most difficult ? sorry for probably a stupid question im really more a "like to watch" than really an expert of it ..
Classic 147 and so pleased for him. He may never have won the World Championship, but I think he lacked the killer instinct and that edge that you need to win them. He won everything else though. I agree with what Steve Davis said about him never winning the title. It was just plain, old fashioned bad luck. Jimmy was always the right player, in the right place, but at the wrong time and always got the best players in the final on top form. That's just bad luck, even though he blew it really on that missed black. I think that was the weight of fan's expectations, which Jimmy said himself got to him a lot of the time. He was anxious and afraid to miss it so he rushed it. A pity, but doesn't change the fact that he is a snooker legend. He was around for two separate eras, Davis and Hendry, and not many players can say that, if any.
I'd say Davis had the best cue action. absolute textbook brillance the master Cueman some would say. But osullivan changed everything different level to all

tony drago is a great person...i love the fact that he went for a hug instead of a simple hand shake
Drago loved every minute of it. See him grinning half way through the break
Making 147 points is harder than being a champion. All great players have champion titles but not every champion has managed to score 147 points

Tony total class act, Jimmy still one of my favorite players ever.
Tony hugging Jimmy at the end was the most heart warming moment.
Every time his face is on camera he's smiling too..even he was happy for him
Well it would have depended on how well they knew each other at the time. Two players who didn't know each other very well wouldn't have hugged.

I still remember that exact moment very well... such a shame...
