It’s absolutely criminal that Jimmy never won the World Championship. I truly believe that in most sports, you need a little bit of luck in critical situations, to help you through, and Jimmy never did get that bit of fortune. His potting ability, cue ball mastery and action, rest play, as well as his outrageous skills and flair, put him in a category of the most talented players of all time. Best break I’ve seen on live TV. People talk about Jimmy’s fan base, which is obviously part of the noise but the shots he has to play to keep this break going are incredible. The pot on the brown with the spider is just phenomenal.
What a lovely guy. I remember standing next to him & chatting in Basildon where he was doing an exhibition/charity match for then Vic Harris. RIP Vic. PS. This brought a tear to my eyes.
That brown at start of the break was typical Jimmy, instinctive and completely outrageous, fantastic to watch such a gifted player, such a shame he couldn't convert his awesome natural ability in to the titles most snooker would have loved to see him win.
and I'll add to that by saying that shots like the brown you mentioned are exceptionally remarkable when you consider the way snooker was played back then. in 99% of the cases, players would've just rolled in behind the brown. It's only now that top players take the attacking option about half of the time. Back then, it was outrageous. As for not being able to convert, what he had in terms of potting ability and intimidating flair was countered by relatively weaker tactical play and positional accuracy. You need to have both to consistently dominate. However, the insane (and sadly under-utilised) talent has him still scoring centuries at 60, performances that others of his era simply can't emulate.
@@kashiffarid8175 very few players would even consider playing the brown shot let alone excecute it perfectly, angled shots in to middle pocket are hard enough but to play it with such pace was exceptional, the slightest contact with side of pocket would have resulted in a missed pot, one of the best shots I've ever seen.
I saw him when he was 18 and British Amateur champion, playing an exhibition at a small snooker club in the Midlands. Pretty sure he shared the exhibition with the then Womens Amateur Champion, can't remember her name. He also played some of the clubs established players, winning easily of course, I seem to remember a couple of big breaks, maybe a 125 or so. The main impression I had was of a bit of a lad who hit the ball incredibly hard, was as thin as a rake and smoked a lot. Wasn't obvious to me that he would become the superstar he became later, but he was already very entertaining to watch. If there was one thing in snooker I would love to have happened/seen, it is that this man being crowned world champion🥲He as always being up there with the big boys but those winning trophies eluded him. Your still a champion to many of us JW👌👏🥇👍
Watching Jimmy at his peak was one of the things I'll always cherish, we were so fortunate to have seen him play. Will never stop hurting when Jimmy was playing amazing and was 14-8 up against Hendry and still failed to win the Worlds... 😢
Truly incredible skills. What I loved about his game was the way in which he appeared literally unfazed by difficult shots or using the rest. Unique player 👍
Potting the first brown in the middle pocket at the pace he did is incredible. Jimmy's timing is so good he can generate amazing backspin with apparently little effort but that brown was moving pretty damned quickly! Unbelievable accuracy required. The other brown was very good too, when the butt of the cue is up like that it's easy for the cue ball to lose contact with the table.
It makes you want to weep that he was never World Champion, when you consider players such as Taylor, Parrott, Dott, Ebdon and Doherty all managed to do it. No offence to any of them, but Jimmy at his best was a different level.
