I actually like the L-shot more than the Z-shot, primarily because it's almost unthinkable to even be considered an option to begin with. Like who would have thought that hitting the cue ball straight up will make the cue ball roll straight to the left almost 90 degrees? It sounds ridiculous to even think about. Both shots are amazing, but they differ in HOW they amazed the audience. On the Z-shot, the audience were loud. The shot was well within their expected options. The cheers from the audience is them congratulating Efren in pulling off such a difficult shot. For the L-shot however, the cheers sounded like they they were gasping, in shock, trying process what just happened. When I tried to do the L-shot and Z-shot myself in practice, I was surprised how much easier the L-shot is compared to the Z-shot. It took me less than 10 tries to replicate the L-shot, but it took me 30+ tries to replicate the Z-shot. The Z-shot is easier to find, but harder to pull-off. The L-shot is almost unthinkable to even be considered a possible option, but easier to pull off. Both would garner amazement, but one will be loud and the other one will be in a form of shock, and I prefer the gasps more than the shouts.
What the Z shot made it famous for was the intense situation it was on. It was a hill-hill rack and one mistake can cost a player the match. Reyes doing that shot on such a high stakes rack was incredible.
I get what you are saying but I don't think its inconceivable to come up with that L shot, as I have played shots like that here or there in practice for fun (wont come off for me as often as him of course). The most impressive thing for me, is that he thinks of these shots while in competitive games. It is amazing how he has the courage to commit (go full blooded) to the shot that I would never try outside practicing/friendly game. This man is the Messi/Ronnie Sullivan/Federer of pool and what I love most about it is he is smiling the whole time due to his love of the game. I reckon he enjoys being snookered, loves the challenge of trying to get out of it (but also pot it) and thrives being in a tough match as it brings out his best. Such a humble man and the master of the game.
while many still thinks most of Efren's difficult shots were out of luck, they were in fact deliberate. poverty drove him to learn pool and compete as early as 9yrs old when he saw the opportunity to earn money from betting on his game. for a kid who sleeps on top of the pool table in a billiard hall and watched a lot of diifficult shots, safety and trick shots, he has all the time to study it, understand and practice. he repeatedly try various shots until he master them. he also learn and played carome and 3 cusion billiars which enhanced his talents to master his craft. he mastered the spin, the english, the trajectory, the bounce from the rail including the corner and when the balls hit each other. the man applies physics, geometry, precision with talent, all his knowledge and experience in playing all three disciplines of billiards, good eyesight, mental toughness and conposure to make his shots. the man is absolutely genius and unparalleled. he could have been the first Filipino multiple gold medalist had they included pool event in the Olympics.
The Philippines should award Efren Reyes. Recognize his achievements and contributions to the country while he was still alive. He is one of the most famous and respected athletes in the world. Mabuhay ka Efren Reyes!
@@JaoTom he was awarded Philippine Legion of Honor and Order order of Lakandula. I hope he'll be award as National Artist for Sports sports. he deserve it for all the recognition and glory he brought to the Philippines. not to mention all the tax contributions from all those winnings.
Anyone who thinks it's luck has never devoted their entire life to be great at anything. They believe in luck because they're to lazy devote the time and hard work to achieve greatness!
Great. When I was young, I saw his matches. He really was a genius & very artistic & elegant player. His game was used to be very smooth & pleasing to the eyes. My regards to this great man.
I couldn't help but smile how humble this guy was when he was invited in Vietnam to play (SEA games I think or an invitation tournament). The Vietnamese guys rolled a red carpet for him. When he arrived, thinking the red carpet was for a VIP and not thinking of himself as a VIP, he just walked outside of the red carpet going to the billiard hall. lol
Agreed with you Netflix should make a documentary or a film with other amazing champion in their sport (specially not very visible sport like football or boxing basket or American football)
shots like these are why I watch Efren Reyes' play.:) I am only discovering Pool now that Efren is retired from tournaments. its like my down time past time now. Now I think back about my geometry class in high school, how I have hated it. But now I can see the application. Efren Reyes did not even study Geometry but he understands it. What a genius!
I'm a sore loser myself. But if the only way my opponent is going to beat me is through a magical shot, and he nailed it, then I think I would take that loss proudly as Earl did in this game.
Oh my how true the comment about Earl Strickland. I don't like the man because he's such a bad sport. The one game I loved was when he and Efren played in Hong Kong in 1996 and Efren came from behind - 17 games behind & beat him! Amazing game full of Efren's unparalleled skills! Strickland acted like a 3 year old at the end when he was beaten. I watch that game video frequently!
I loved this. Don't know how I came upon it. But I love pool, grew up with it, played it in the military, played it at the VA, and played it to some town championships. And I watch this guy, and yeah. I could definitely compete here. In another 200 years.
#4 was something only Reyes could have come up with, nevermind pocketing it. A 4-rail kick shot is as rare & difficult as you're gonna get - just imagine hitting all 4 sides of the table, skillfully avoiding all the other balls & then ultimately sinking the target ball. Mind-blowing.
The odds of making these shots has to be astronomical and you add the fact that its a tourney makes it even more amazing, sure people can replicate the shot after but he came up with the shot during the tourney and his imagination, feel and touch are what make the shots possible, many opponents have thought oh boy I have him now.
Yeah replicating the shot in practice is a completely different situation. He's doing this in an international tournament with elimination on the line. He's like the pool version of Magic Johnson.
The El (L) shot has to be the greatest shot ever. Not only because of the shot, but knowing how to manipulate the corner of the padding to make the shot. I would be willing to bet no one has ever thought about trying that shot or even thinking about it.
I did it once. It was before Efren did it. But, I am in no way better then the GOAT. I just happen to see how the cue ball moved if you hit it in the corner. So one day when I needed it, I used it. I only did it correct that one time. I never tried it ever again. And I dont think I will ever be able to do it again.
I was just 11 yrs old nun napanuod ko un #1 match. 40 na ako now and I can still remember that magical shot. Thanks YT and uploader for taking me to that moment again 😊
