QUOZL!!! Omg I've been trying to remember the name of that book for literal decades and could only remember that it was a weird little book with creatures on it and started with a Q. There was a little old bookstore that sold paper bags full of "mystery" books that I would spend my allowance on as a kid, and that book happened to be one. So wild that you happened upon a copy of it and solved my mystery.
I can say it's been such a joy finding your channel, not only have we discussed books, but other topics as well (which is difficult to find nowadays). But you really need to stop adding to my tbr, it's already a monster and I can NOT get through as much gems as you do every month.
@Talking_Story I just ordered 2 copies (the one you have because so pretty, but then I found a different one that looked like a painting and had to have it) of Frankenstein because I'm joining you on that read, it'll be a first time read for me. So I do need to know when the booktube with the fam is happening because I need to plan around it. And I found the narrator for my favorite character in the sci-fi trilogy I always mention, and added a few audiobooks that he narrates for, and I'm just here going, Ezra what are you doing as an amusement park scare artist stoner? 😅

Happy belated birthday John! You guys absolutely deserve everything you've gotten from the community. Your passion for books is contagious and reminds me of why I love to read so much. This month I came out pretty well but not so much for fantasy - except I got and read Mistborn era 1 and thought it was awesome! My comere journey will for sure continue. I also got Capture or Kill by Vince Flynn, the next book in one of my favorite series! Action thrillers are one my main sources of reading. Otherwise I got Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger and a lot of other nonfiction stuff, ranging from Jack Carr's new nonfiction work to American Civil War biographies. I guess that's how it goes as a history student. This month though I plan to start the Lord of the Rings for the first time! Thanks again John and enjoy your reads this month!

Saint of Bright Doors has been a bit polarizing but those who love it really love it. It’s won several awards this year (starting with the Crawford Award, which I find one of the most astute award juries) and Nebula, and it’s been shortlisted for most of this year’s awards-we’ll see in a few weeks if it wins this years Le Guin Prize. I’m looking forward to giving it a shot before too long.
@@Talking_Story I love that Evie came in clutch with two other versions of Frankenstein too. I think the 1818 one is Mary's version, as she wrote it before her husband edited it, which is the version that's commonly known.

What a crazy book haul! Speaking of the New 52 how did you feel about that when they released. I started reading comics when the New 52 was getting close to wrapping up in 2015 but I know it upset a lot of people at the time. I actually have the whole Superman New 52 run.
I definitely have «LPQ» on my 2025 MBR List! In September I bought «Navola» by Paolo Bacigalupi (Fantasy inspired by Renaissance Italy) and «The Blood Dimmed Tide» by Stephen Aryan (The Nightingale & The Falcon #2, Historical Fantasy inspired by the Mongol Conquest of Persia) for my 2025 Spring TBR, as well as my digital Indie preorder of «Dreamer, Awake!» by Liam Hall («Liam’s Lyceum», Post-Apocalyptic Cyberpunk/S&S(?😅))! I have mentioned this before, but I also bought the Bernie Wrightson-illustrated «Frankenstein» and «The Secret History» by Donna Tartt as gifts to a good friend I am planning to visit abroad: Illustrated Gothic Horror and Dark Academia is right up my friend's alley!

And speaking of «The Secret History» and Tartt, I was reminded of the «Once Upon a Time...at Bennington College» Podcast, about Tartt and Bret Easton Ellis' time at that Northeastern College at about the same period of the early 80s, making it an interesting intersection of two authors with very different backgrounds and styles (Ellis the Preppy MTV-obsessed Californian Troublemaker with an Post-Modern obsession for the macabre and risque behind the polished images of Hollywood and New York, Tartt the Southern Wallflower obsessed with both 19th Century Classics & Ancient Classics, as well as Jazz-era Oxford) that both have shaped Modern American Fiction immensely, often with direct and indirect parallells and callbacks to their time at Bennington, especially «Hampden College» in «The Secret History» and Ellis' «Camden College» in «Less Than Zero» & «The Rules of Attraction»: «Mad Men for Gen-X» to quote LA Times! And now Ellis' obsession with Elvis Costello, has made «Oliver's Army» and «Accidents Will Happen» earworms in my head!😄Cheers John!
@@Talking_Story Apparently they even had a couple of dates together at Bennington (what I would have given to be a fly on the wall during one of those, sounds almost like a John Hughes Brat Pack comedy movie IRL! 😆) and later read each other’s manuscripts for their first novels, something which just cement my belief in having a wide range of different perspectives in both your own reading and in your beta-readers is needed to create modern classics!

I don't know if you filmed and/or posted this on your actual B-day, but October 3rd is my B-day, so I'm feeling a little kindred spiritship - I'm merely 41 though. BTW, I'm fairly certain Jakob confirmed in one of your livestreams - I'm quite sure it was with Philip Chase, but for some reason I can't find the video now - that his edition of Frankenstein was the 1831 version (with sweet illustrations), but as there was other talk going on at that moment, I think it wasn't wholly appreciated. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe he's found an 1819 since then, but maybe you should double-check. Not that it wouldn't be interesting for him to read the amended story, and then you can try to compare and figure out what's different, but there it is.

When I read Frankenstein last year the edition I had was a mix of the two. So it had the 1832 (?) text, but in brackets it showed what the original 1818 had been. It got confusing. Sometimes she just deleted or added a word, or swapped out just a word or two. Other places it was whole different paragraphs. Do not recommend.
I have the exact same edition of the Long Price Quartet and I am irrationally annoyed with the ugly green sticker on the spine. Bought it 3 years ago and still haven't read it because of it, out of pettiness. You reading it in 2025 might be a good opportunity for me to forgive the publisher.

I guess that's how it goes as a history student.

Saint of Bright Doors has been a bit polarizing but those who love it really love it. It’s won several awards this year (starting with the Crawford Award, which I find one of the most astute award juries) and Nebula, and it’s been shortlisted for most of this year’s awards-we’ll see in a few weeks if it wins this years Le Guin Prize. I’m looking forward to giving it a shot before too long.

What a crazy book haul! Speaking of the New 52 how did you feel about that when they released. I started reading comics when the New 52 was getting close to wrapping up in 2015 but I know it upset a lot of people at the time. I actually have the whole Superman New 52 run.

In September I bought «Navola» by Paolo Bacigalupi (Fantasy inspired by Renaissance Italy) and «The Blood Dimmed Tide» by Stephen Aryan (The Nightingale & The Falcon #2, Historical Fantasy inspired by the Mongol Conquest of Persia) for my 2025 Spring TBR, as well as my digital Indie preorder of «Dreamer, Awake!» by Liam Hall («Liam’s Lyceum», Post-Apocalyptic Cyberpunk/S&S(?😅))!
I have mentioned this before, but I also bought the Bernie Wrightson-illustrated «Frankenstein» and «The Secret History» by Donna Tartt as gifts to a good friend I am planning to visit abroad: Illustrated Gothic Horror and Dark Academia is right up my friend's alley!
Those are wonderful gifts. The Wrightson art in that edition is soo gorgeously dark and brooding.

And speaking of «The Secret History» and Tartt, I was reminded of the «Once Upon a Time...at Bennington College» Podcast, about Tartt and Bret Easton Ellis' time at that Northeastern College at about the same period of the early 80s, making it an interesting intersection of two authors with very different backgrounds and styles (Ellis the Preppy MTV-obsessed Californian Troublemaker with an Post-Modern obsession for the macabre and risque behind the polished images of Hollywood and New York, Tartt the Southern Wallflower obsessed with both 19th Century Classics & Ancient Classics, as well as Jazz-era Oxford) that both have shaped Modern American Fiction immensely, often with direct and indirect parallells and callbacks to their time at Bennington, especially «Hampden College» in «The Secret History» and Ellis' «Camden College» in «Less Than Zero» & «The Rules of Attraction»: «Mad Men for Gen-X» to quote LA Times! And now Ellis' obsession with Elvis Costello, has made «Oliver's Army» and «Accidents Will Happen» earworms in my head!😄Cheers John!

@@Talking_Story Apparently they even had a couple of dates together at Bennington (what I would have given to be a fly on the wall during one of those, sounds almost like a John Hughes Brat Pack comedy movie IRL! 😆) and later read each other’s manuscripts for their first novels, something which just cement my belief in having a wide range of different perspectives in both your own reading and in your beta-readers is needed to create modern classics!

BTW, I'm fairly certain Jakob confirmed in one of your livestreams - I'm quite sure it was with Philip Chase, but for some reason I can't find the video now - that his edition of Frankenstein was the 1831 version (with sweet illustrations), but as there was other talk going on at that moment, I think it wasn't wholly appreciated. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe he's found an 1819 since then, but maybe you should double-check. Not that it wouldn't be interesting for him to read the amended story, and then you can try to compare and figure out what's different, but there it is.

When I read Frankenstein last year the edition I had was a mix of the two. So it had the 1832 (?) text, but in brackets it showed what the original 1818 had been. It got confusing. Sometimes she just deleted or added a word, or swapped out just a word or two. Other places it was whole different paragraphs. Do not recommend.

I have the exact same edition of the Long Price Quartet and I am irrationally annoyed with the ugly green sticker on the spine. Bought it 3 years ago and still haven't read it because of it, out of pettiness. You reading it in 2025 might be a good opportunity for me to forgive the publisher.
