Why are houses made so flimsy in the US? If the houses were made with cinder blocks and steel, like most in the Caribbean, as well as the use of hurricane straps they may have fared a bit better. Our house in Jamaica survived Hurricane Beryl, a CAT 4. Many buildings only lost their roofs (because they didn't use hurricane straps), the structure itself remained intact. Wooden buildings/or shacks here, for obvious reasons, are more vulnerable. But, the majority of houses built on our island are built to withstand at least a category 4 hurricane. Our building codes are quite stringent. You won't find houses, for the most part, washing away from foundations. The US needs to do something about that. To charge so much for flimsy houses... Wow....❤️🇯🇲🌺

An island nation speaks of housing,OK. Cinder box houses, wherever you find them, are the cheapest to construct. Jamaica does not demand insulation for heating. Impoverished countries choose blocks because of a lack of local lumber and fire protection. I have been in every port in Jamaica that can service a 400' ship - 70s, 80s, & 90s. The frequency of hurricane force winds, flood/soil erosion insure failures will eventually stop.

If you're building your house on stilts, you shouldn't be able to get insurance for those homes. You're building in a flood zone intentionally and this should not be rewarded by insurance payments to fix your stupidly placed second home or home for that matter.
My heart just aches for everyone caught in the path of these terrible storms. There will be more storms, more deaths, more grief if we don't elect a leader willing to do what's needed! The Democrat presidential candidate has a plan of action against climate change. The Repubican candidate doesn't even believe in it. It's our choice in November.
