I use Uber in WA and Lyft in OR. This is helpful because you often cross over the bridge as there are 2 very large cities on the border (Portland/Vancouver)
You actually can drive in other unconnected states as long as your car meets the new states requirements. My home market was Tampa fl but when I went to visit my mom in waco Tx I added her car to my profile got added to her insurance submitted all paperwork and drove for the couple weeks I was visiting both Lyft and Uber. Then when I went home I switched back to my fl car and drove in fl. I did have to notify both Lyft and Uber to get my area switched back because Florida is a standard region. You can drive any car that you own and have insured in your name so I could’ve drove my mothers car in Florida but it didn’t switch back over automatically I had to contact them.
Hey guys, so, I'm a California uber driver who's visiting Nashville, TN for a few months. I want to drive there too, so I called up Uber and they told me I can drive in Nashville during this period IF I meet all of Nashville's regulation standards (the process to verify this takes around 10 business days). So they're transferring my account to a city in a state 2,000 miles away for 3 months, while still having my California account active.
Short answer: Yes. I live in N. Idaho and can drive both here and in Spokane, WA. I do both Uber & Lyft. They're considered one market, but two different and distinct areas with their own rates for both services. As of today, Spokane area is $1 per mile with a $1 base fare, a $2.10 "booking fee", $6.35 minimum fare and $0.10 per minute. CdA (ID) is $1.75 per mile with a $2.50 base and $0.25 per minute with a $1.85 "booking fee" and a $5.85 Minimum fare (Uber X rates). Uber XL is $4.50 base, $1.85 booking, $7.35 minimum, $0.30 per minute, and $2.75 per mile in N. Idaho. In WA it's $1.60 base, $2.10 booking, $7.35 minimum, $0.20 per minute, and $1.50 per mile. Lyft Plus increases the minimum to $5.25, a base of $1.60, $1.50 per mile and $0.20 per minute in both locations. Typically, ID trips are under 4 miles, and in WA 6.5 miles. Plus Spokane has an International Airport, so plenty of "captive audience" action. The originating state fees stay with for the entire trip if crossing the state line, so if I do a "round trip" taking a pax to the airport from Idaho, returning with pax +, it's all on Idaho rates. If I did a trip from ID to the airport, dropped pax off, picked up another fare going back to ID, the trip is divided, and I'd make more going there than coming back. I've found that the money is about equal in both locations on the weekends, but N. Idaho is dead otherwise. The biggest regular, non-surge money is in Uber XL from the airport/casino area. Surge in downtown Spokane on weekends is huge, often over 5x after midnight, but you'll deal with mainly super drunk overprivileged college students and white trash stoners.
Hi, I am in CDA and wanting to work on both Uber and Lyft in CDA and Spokane. I was told we cannot do both - Is there a # I can reach you at to discuss this?
2 Years ago I was a Lyft only driver and I transferred my city from Indiana to Florida to drive on spring break and Lyft require me to obtain a Florida insurance policy and do a city change on my app.
I'm seriously thinking about switching to lyft ,I hate being restricted so stupid. I uber in Topeka ks no market here so I drive to Lawrence ks and appreciate the jayhawk community thanks a million
PA/NJ too...with uber we can drive in both states..wow...nice tip about being able to drive multiple states with Lyft..im callng my insurance company to know the legalities..
Do you know if you can rent a car through Lyft in a different city to drive in that city temporarily? Like when visiting some friends across the country, etc ?
I can tell you at least one exception Harry. That's Washington DC Market. If your Washington DC Virginia or Maryland you can drive it all three markets.
It sucks if you live little outside of there market in say the Eastern panhandle of WV, which is basically becoming the main commuter area for DC/NOVA you end up dropping people off in those areas and can't get any rides back until you cross the WV line.
That's weird because I'm a Lyft driver for going on 4 years now. When I pick up rides from Philly to drop off at NJ, after I drop them off my driver app says I'm missing requirements to drive in NJ. It takes me off and I have to drive back to PA like 2 1/2 hours. Like if Lyft knows that stop giving me rides to drop off in Jersey. However, when I go to GA, I'm allowed to do Lyft there.
Nice Harry! That answers my questions. I would like to follow this united states disc golf pro tour around this summer, but was unsure on how I would be able to find this idea. I've driven for Lyft and Uber in the past, but haven't in years. I am definitely going to look into this tonight. If I have to sign up again I'll use your link!
Very timely vid for me at least. Cincinnati is obviously in OH however, the greater Cincinnati International Airport is across the river in Kentucky. There are also many fares to and from the casinos/concert venues in Indiana. I will ask Uber & Lyft about that question. Thanks for the post. Would love to read the blog or watch the vlog from the guy that drove in 60 cities. Sounds like a Craigslist Joe (the movie) situation and quite fun.
I live right on the border of two states. At least 1/4 of my rides are from my state to the neighboring one's airport. I wanted to see if I could add the other state because I am constantly faced with deadhead rights for up to an hour to get back out of the neighboring state. --- Uber's "support" was absolutely terrible. 1) The first reply was that they were all set to switch me to the other state but it would take a couple weeks and I couldn't drive anymore in my home state. Nope, not what I asked Uber, please try again. 2) Their second reply was we are happy to add switch me to my home state (which I am already set up for) and that it would take a week or two. NOPE! I am already a driver there, I just want to ADD the other state. No joy. So frustrating...
Ikr this shit is so annoying. I live in Pennsylvania and have family in New Jersey and am very frequently going back and forth. Why does it matter, why do I have to pick only one or the other this is ridiculously inconvenient
Do you have any updated information on this because this video is 4 years old and I'm trying to figure out where else I can Uber and it sounds like lift and Uber or the complete opposite now because Lyft won't let me drive in Texas but I'm from Tulsa Oklahoma and I guess since they're part of the same hub or something I can drive in Texas too I'm already signed up I drove a guy from Tulsa to Dallas Texas and then I stayed for a couple of days and I was able to Uber like crazy
I wish Uber would change this. I work in the Charlotte market, I'm from Philly and I would like to drive there when I visit home. I'm petty sure I can do postmates.
I'm originally from Philadelphia too which I'm here right now for the holiday break. But I just recently moved to GA. And I always wondered that too. They definitely need to change that
Thanks for the great information. Hoping to try out a run from Phoenix to the tip of Michigan Canadian border to see the new grandbaby. Hopping from one city to the next to pay for the trip is what I was hoping for. Will be sure to check city and state rules before starting out😁😲
Wanted to do something like this myself, unfortunately I think Lyft has changed their policy on this. For most states, Lyft requires either license from that state or the vehicle to be registered in that state you want to drive in :/ kind of a bummer.. I don’t see what the big deal is.
Be aware that if you don’t have a taxi license, most often you will get snagged driving in another state. There are many videos on Facebook showing drivers getting arrested for picking up passengers that don’t have a taxi license and our in a different state
No you cant . You must have same state driver license and car insurance which your license plate issues based on that and pass inspection at same state.
I live in Pennsylvania but I am right on the border of New Jersey. Sometimes I get a ride going into New Jersey. If a ride pops up in New Jersey does that mean I can take it? I’m guessing based on what you said if I couldn’t do that then the ride wouldn’t pop up at all?
I'm an insurance agent licensed in 45 states, and I can tell you that insurance laws vary greatly from one state to another. New York and Nevada consider other state's insurance to be INVALID. Also states have their own rules, such as Florida requiring PIP more so than even Liability, and you need to have certain amounts of liability, which varies by state, in order to legally drive for Uber/Lyft. If you have questions about any of this, let me know. Bottom line is, if you have 100,000/300,000 for BI Liabililty, and RIde Share Gap insurance, you have enough for any state, but it's really the laws of each state that comes into play, and not so much Uber or Lyft's rules. I don't see all states having uniform insurance laws anytime in the near future. They all have their own laws and have had unique laws for many years. If anything, they are becoming more unique as time goes by. For instance, to buy any kind of insurance policy in North Carolina, you have to prove residency there first.
Thanks for the video. So if I as an uber driver moved from Massachusetts to Texas, let's say for a one year or longer, would I be able to drive there and then come back to Massachusetts and drive again here?
I moved to west coast. They transferred your account and number. It took a couple weeks to be on the road. You have to do kind all as it comes to license and registration and insurance. You contact them and they transfer acc and number to new state.
I am a Lyft driver in Los Angeles. I have not driven since the Pandemic began in March 2020 so my driver account with Lyft is dormant with expired documents. I have a California drivers license. I am going to Martha's Vineyard, an island in Massachusetts for the summer. I own a minivan which is already in Massachusetts with California plates. All documents are in the car. When I arrive in a couple weeks, I will reactivate the account and have the vehicle inspected by Lyft in Massachusetts. Do you think this will work and the driver account will be reactivated so I can drive there?
As soon as I enter California I get a message from Lyft saying im not authorized to drive in California so I don’t know where you getting all this wrong info
6:02 so information that I’m looking for is what other states for a Lyft and Uber are considered a standard region? For example, Florida is a standard region and you can drive your car from North Dakota in Florida without any other state regulations like there’s no inspection or anything, but when you go to Texas, your car Hass to be registered in Texas, so I’m wondering what other states are considered a standard region
Harry, is Uber doing anything about passenger's who are cancelling their trips a few minutes before we drop them off! Us drivers are losing alot of $$ from this bad practice and we're not able to rate tge passenger's who are doing this cuz we can't complete the trip! thanks!
Is this happening frequently? I would stop the trip right then/there if so... But no don't think Uber is doing this atm. You should still be able to rate though.
You can see on the app if they cancel enroute. Drop off the passenger immediately. Don't forget to tell them "have a nice day". Then report to rideshare co passenger ordered under.
Change your city on the app to the California address and they probably will require you to buy California insurance to drive Lyft. That should do it...
I wanted to drive with lyft in Texas but they said I had to upload a copy of the registration/inspection sticker. I didn't do it because I don't want to change my tag to a different state. It looks like uber eats may be able to be done in multiple states without changing your home state. Do you know?
Hey, do you have the link to the podcast you referenced with the guy who drove Lyft in many different cities? I'm interest to learn more about how to do something similar. Thanks!
Question. When switching states, or applying in a new state, I'm assuming you must have a local state mailing address that you have access to. What if I'm just travelling and dont have a permanent rental or address in a state that I want to spend time in. What would or could I do for the address? Any ideas?
This only one state stuff with uber is ridiculously inconvenient. What even is the point of that, why do they want drivers to be restricted to only one state?
This really sucks for Snowbirds who spend winters in Florida & summers up North. What if you register in another state? Does Uber cancel your original account? Can you be registered in 2 States? Or do you have to re-register each time you change locations?
You can't be registered in 2 states as far as I know, because you need a driver's license for the state in which you drive to sign up. But you can drive for Lyft in other states without re-registering, you just won't see the bonuses/promos in that area.
I have a California license but looking to drive in FL. When I go to rent through the marketplace it doesn’t redirect me to the vehicle marketplace for the Miami area. Is this because my license is CA and I have to switch it to FL first?
Weird, I drive in new York 5 boroughs, and when in I drop off passenger out of 5 boroughs Nassau county ( Long island) or Westchester county, I can't go online with Lyft , eventhough it is New York State, but I can get a passenger on Uber
Hey everyone! Does anyone know about Postmates and other states? I do Postmates in Tampa and I am taking a road trip in a few weeks and I’m wondering if I can do Postmates if I pass thru a city that has it?
I do postmates in texas and drove to Orlando and as long as the app is on it will ping you. Once you finish the first delivery youll get the map for that city
I have a trip to Austin TX from San Antonio TX which is about 80 miles. Is there anyway to let riders know i am going to take this trip and am available to drive someone one way to austin?
Thank you for the info.. I'm a new driver for both Uber and Lyft. Did my 16 rides for Lyft yesterday and looking forward to earning my bonus for both services. My mom lives in Ft. Pierce, FL and I was planning a road trip to see her and now knowing I can work while I see her makes it this feasible. Any cool podcasts or gear I should get?
Definitely think you should download the Rideshare Guy podcast - it's my favorite! Here are some suggestions for gear I recommend too: therideshareguy.com/11-products-that-every-rideshare-driver-should-be-carrying/ and therideshareguy.com/7-practical-gifts-for-your-favorite-rideshare-driver/
Hmm, I would think so. You could reach out and check to be sure. Uber Eats delivery across states sounds challenging - let me know how it goes if you end up doing it :)
ScottyDoes did you get an answer to this? I’m moving from Olympia, WA to Overland Park, KS and was wanting to know if I had to officially change my location or not.
Can Drive For Lyft With Out Of State Plates On Your Car..? For Example: You Live In Phoenix Arizona, But Your Car’s License Plates Be California Plates As Well As Your Drivers License Be From California?
Now I live in Florida and plan to move to North Carolina beginning of 2018. I plan to change my insurance, license and tag to that state. Would I still be able to be accessed as a driver again if my license hasn't been registered to that state for a year?
I would like to drive for uber or lyft but neither one have a rental or lease program where I am located. Is it possible with either one of these companies to rent or lease a car in a state where they have a program and drive it in a state that does not have that program? I live in Utah and it has no rental or lease program. Can I drive to Las Vegas and rent or lease a car on their program, drive it back to Utah?
If I have car requirements that meet my state but don't meet a state I want to drive in (a connecting state), can I still give rides in that second state where my car doesn't meet that state's requirements? I'd register in my living state. Thanks!
The Rideshare Guy, I live in Portland Maine and one day I decided I was gonna uber and/or Lyft in Boston MA. When I got there, I realized I couldn't uber(the message from Uber was clear), but I couldn't Lyft too. Do you know anything about that?
Yeah did something really stupid yesterday thinking I could go to Vegas rent a car and do Uber or Lyft here but their policy is really strict. I booked a flight fell inconfident that I could rent a car and do Uber Uber here in Las Vegas Nevada where they have the Is pro bowl NFL and the NHL All Star game here. So I felt like an idiot and flew back to Minnesota where I'm from and wasted money because one of the Uber Is Hertz rental in Minnesota said you could possibly do do ride share in another state I'm glad I found this video because I'm on my way back to Minnesota And I'm trying to figure out how to do a road trip through the Spring or summer Because I'm not giving up but with the help of this video I still need more confirmation confirmation so I'm not stuck can I use a rental car instead of using my own car instead of using my own car to do this with lyft ? Please let me know so I can make plans and make money Do I have to go to a lyft hub
Do you know if could do this with express drive and Lyft like I have a an emergency where I need to go to Fresno from vegas this weekend and would still like to try to work if I could. I can't really find an answer anywgere
You should be able to get insurance through the Express Drive service, but you can find more insurance options here as well - therideshareguy.com/rideshare-insurance-options-for-drivers/
I have a really good question here.. so I live in the states as my main residency and my second residency is in EI. Would I be able to do Lyft in both countries, or does Lyft have to be available in that country in order to do so?
My home market city is in Gainesville, Florida. I went down to South Florida (Miami) and it told me that I was unable to go online and drive, even though I have driven in Orlando, Florida and Jacksonville, Florida with no problem....doesn't make sense.
That's odd - did you have your current vehicle inspection uploaded? See here for more info: help.lyft.com/hc/en-us/articles/213707938-Florida-Driver-Information
GREAT video thank you so much! I recently signed up for lyft after a passenger had lied that i was high with uber when i was just dancing outside my car smh. I live in Hartford county and i can only pick up people in CT and bring them out of state and not vice versa with uber. But it sounds like if i was gonna end up in Springfield i could use lyft to still get rides. I also heard though that if i get a vehicle inspection with my car and pass it with uber that i could do rides in Mass, anyone know for this to be true? You could also just use a RENTAL to do uber in any state which wasn't mentioned in this video, they have a program for it and just add the car onto your account when its in use :)
It really depends on your insurance provider if they will honor paying for an accident if it happens in another state. You can get insurance in the state you live in for rideshare here - therideshareguy.com/rideshare-insurance-options-for-drivers/
I'm a cab driver in Michigan who wants to also sign with Lyft and/or Uber for part of the time. We'll be visiting our son in Norh Carolina for nearly two months over the holidays and I'd like to do some driving there. Can this be done? I saw Howard Walton's comment about insurance. Does that prevent me from doing Lyft while I'm out of state?

I was driving from NH to NC and turned the app on in CT. and did 5 hours non-stop before shutting it off.
Uber or Lyft?
Was this in uber
I'm from Baltimore Maryland and I've been on the road for 4 years and have been to 44 states. Lyft is easier where is Uber as trickier.
This was EXTREMELY informative and helpful!! Thank you so much!! 👍🏾
The Mobile, AL Uber market allows Mobile, AL partners to drive in Pensacola, FL and Destin, FL.
Phil Forrest makes sense with the closeness of it... you can throw a rock into the other state
From south ms. trying to drive in mobile al, my app didn’t alert me that I couldn’t get rides trying to figure out if it will tell me or not 🤷🏼♀️
PA/NJ too...with uber we can drive in both states..wow...nice tip about being able to drive multiple states with Lyft..im callng my insurance company to know the legalities..
Im in PA but when I cross to NJ I can’t accept rides till be back in PA.
How you can do that?
@mayaorganica325 my post was 7 years ago I guess when you could do that. It been years ago since I've driven for Uber or lyft

Here in Pittsburgh, PA we can pick up in other states, WV, DE and OH I believe.
Not sure about WV, I have a home down there (vaca rental) and when I'm there Uber won't let me log in to drive..
If someone wants to change state , California or Florida, they also need to change driver license
Not true. I pick up in PA drop off in NJ and work in NJ from there. My " market" is p.a. and have worked in other states I was visiting .
Uber or Lyft?

I was told today in can drive in Tennessee. I drive in Georgia
Thanks for the video. So if I as an uber driver moved from Massachusetts to Texas, let's say for a one year or longer, would I be able to drive there and then come back to Massachusetts and drive again here?
I think about moving to bullhead city....do I have to start over in new state
thank you for the straight forward answer !! subscribed
Hello I know this is late but what about Uber rental? If it's in another state it's already legal and insured right?
Just now Subscribed.
I thought I had already. Weird.
Thank you for the LYFT information.
In Chicago, we can also get requests in Indiana, and Wisconsin
Panama City Beach Uber here and people from Atlanta and Dothan come down here and drive all the time somehow
How my wife couldn't drive for Jacksonville
As soon as I enter California I get a message from Lyft saying im not authorized to drive in California so I don’t know where you getting all this wrong info
Does this also mean no ubereats in other states as well?
@todd smith im n houston and delivered in New Orleans
6:02 so information that I’m looking for is what other states for a Lyft and Uber are considered a standard region? For example, Florida is a standard region and you can drive your car from North Dakota in Florida without any other state regulations like there’s no inspection or anything, but when you go to Texas, your car Hass to be registered in Texas, so I’m wondering what other states are considered a standard region
I am out of Georgia and in July I will be in Florida for a week. Could I lyft in the Orlando area?
Can I use New York driver license to drive Uber or Lyft in Los Angeles because I may comeback to NYC
My prime state is Oregon. I would like to drive in Palm Springs 4 months of the year. Can this happen with Lyft? I will be signing up soon. Thanks
What about if you have two residences I have a residency in New Jersey and I have residency in California Uber if I am a resident in both States
I am now a lyft driver in Oregon. I asked to drive in California for a few snowbird months . They said NO
Change your city on the app to the California address and they probably will require you to buy California insurance to drive Lyft. That should do it...
I wanted to drive with lyft in Texas but they said I had to upload a copy of the registration/inspection sticker. I didn't do it because I don't want to change my tag to a different state. It looks like uber eats may be able to be done in multiple states without changing your home state. Do you know?
I sign up in NY but I switch to do Uber eats in PA but it takes 7 days
Hey, do you have the link to the podcast you referenced with the guy who drove Lyft in many different cities? I'm interest to learn more about how to do something similar. Thanks!
Yep...very interested, great info... can you share the podcast.
I'm from LA and dropped off in Vegas I was not able to get rides in NV I tried for 2hr nothing.
But you can drive for Lyft in other states without re-registering, you just won't see the bonuses/promos in that area.
how do you do this with lyft?
Thanks! I was def wondering about this!
I have a California license but looking to drive in FL. When I go to rent through the marketplace it doesn’t redirect me to the vehicle marketplace for the Miami area. Is this because my license is CA and I have to switch it to FL first?
I live in Harrisburg, PA. Why is it that I can drive in Philadelphia but not Lancaster, PA?
I drive for uber and plan on signing up for lyft soon I live in Connecticut would I be able to drive in Boston as well?
Deshante Braggs Doubt it, I had to go to a greenlight hub in Boston to submit for the CORI check.
Can you still drive Lyft in other states
Is this still accurate. I’m in mn and am going to Las Vegas for a month and would like to know if I can drive Lyft while there
You still should be able to drive for Lyft while you're there.
Weird, I drive in new York 5 boroughs, and when in I drop off passenger out of 5 boroughs Nassau county ( Long island) or Westchester county, I can't go online with Lyft , eventhough it is New York State, but I can get a passenger on Uber
I am wondering if Lyft will allow you to drive in NY outside of the 5 boroughs, like Long Island or upstate NY...?
Hey everyone! Does anyone know about Postmates and other states? I do Postmates in Tampa and I am taking a road trip in a few weeks and I’m wondering if I can do Postmates if I pass thru a city that has it?
I do postmates in texas and drove to Orlando and as long as the app is on it will ping you. Once you finish the first delivery youll get the map for that city
Do you know if there are any exceptions in New England?
Thank you, very useful and nice explained info
I also plan on moving to the Chicago suburbs, would I be able to pick up people all over the suburbs and the city?
If you drop in Nevada (las vegas) must one have their TNC sticker?
How expensive is it to go across America?
You could set up multiple accounts with multiple emails
Is most of this information still the same?
I was thinking of taking a cross country trip and doing uber eats along the way. Does uber eats apply to these rules as well?
Hmm, I would think so. You could reach out and check to be sure. Uber Eats delivery across states sounds challenging - let me know how it goes if you end up doing it :)
You can do postmates anywhere in the country
You shuld start a ride shere insurance company.... you are famous now ...and we need a insurance company that knows we get $3.75 per trip 😂
It would depend on your lease terms, but there are a few more options you should check out first: therideshareguy.com/uber-vehicle-marketplace/
I booked a flight fell inconfident that I could rent a car and do Uber Uber here in Las Vegas Nevada where they have the Is pro bowl NFL and the NHL All Star
game here.
Harry how long my acc uber will be approved by uber?
Hey Jerry have you mention about insurance on those who participate in the Lyft express drive/rental Carr?
You should be able to get insurance through the Express Drive service, but you can find more insurance options here as well - therideshareguy.com/rideshare-insurance-options-for-drivers/
Thanks Harry!
Okay, thanks, I am in San Antonio, good money but, it could be better
This reminds me, I need to get an LAX permit.
How about if your insurance is from a different state and your license is from a different state
It really depends on your insurance provider if they will honor paying for an accident if it happens in another state. You can get insurance in the state you live in for rideshare here - therideshareguy.com/rideshare-insurance-options-for-drivers/
I drive in Chicago and we need a specific Chicago emblem, so while I'm driving down to Texas, will I need any other stickers or emblems on my car?
Not that I'm aware of, but you might want to contact them to see: therideshareguy.com/the-most-popular-rideshare-questions-answered/
You'll want to confirm with your insurance company that you're covered for rideshare driving, but yes, with Lyft you can drive in other states.
Can I drive for both uber and Lyft with the same rental car from uber??
If it's an Uber-only program, you can only drive with Uber. Did you sign up with Hertz? therideshareguy.com/uber-vehicle-marketplace/
Watching this 7 years later. Is this still true?
you said you would leave a link to that podcast from that guy who did Lyft rides in 65 cities but I don't see it anywhere
Here it is: therideshareguy.com/rsg045-whats-it-like-to-give-a-lyft-ride-in-65-different-cities/
