  • I wanted to compare my 2018 Traditional ES 335 Vintage Ebony against my friends' 2020 Dot ES 335 from Nashville.
    They are BOTH great guitars.
    I believe 2018 was the last year at Memphis(?) and there's a lot of comments I've read comparing Memphis vs Nashville 335s. I figured why not add to the discussion.
    The new Gibsons are AMAZINGLY built. No question. Love the bigger necks too. However; I DO prefer the Memphis Historic (MHS) Pickups in my 2018 vs the alnico V T types in the new 2020.
    Please understand I'm a rookie at this. so the sound quality and presentation won't be tip top. Also my kids are sleeping so the amps had to be quiet ;) Sorry about the loud pedal pops I had nowhere else to put my phone to catch the flow of my Covid hair ;)
    If I got some things wrong in the comparison feel free to correct me below. Be kind. My intentions for the video were to have fun. Do the same if you can please ;)
    Also I'm not a jazz guy and I don't often reach for dead clean tone. Sorry it's not how I use these beauties.
    I wanted to get more info out on these great guitars so please excuse the quality and my slippers. ;)
    Oh and I called the cherry an epiphone by accident and said objective instead of subjective....I am human after all ;)
    btw to see excellent videos look up my buddy william bennett iii
    Enjoy!!

    I have a 2021 Gibson 335 60's Cherry Figured guitar. I just love the guitar. The pickups might be a little brighter but I found for rock, the slightly more open top end is nice for cutting through on lead guitar. For warmer sounds, I put my treble knob in my amp down to 4 to reduce the top end and get a warm sound

    Great comparison and very interesting. I have a 2018 Traditional and it’s just an amazing sounding 335, the MHS pickups are pretty stunning. When I got it, it def. needed some setup work out of the box but it plays very well now…I also prefer to keep the stopbar raised up a bit for a slinkier feel. The Nashville sounds good, but you can def. hear the more strident top end there…the Memphis Traditional is just warmer with more body, and a more pleasing sounding top end.

    I have bought two of the older 335's that came out of the custom shop in memphis as they all did then, and both needed a minor nut file and graphite saddles to stay in tune. I wish that I had known that up front because the first gig I played on stage with the guitar was hellish...I couldnt keep it in tune for a single song and fought it all night. Once I did the repairs to my brand new $3500. guitar it was great. The second one needed the same, but by that time I knew what was needed before hand and didnt get snake bit at a show. Thankfully there are still plenty of the Memphis models still for sale although the woods on the nashvilles seem to be of a higher grade in terms of character

      I agree. Some need a kick in the butt to get going. However the ebony one in the video? Spent two years lost in a show storage room in Canada. Opened the case and the finish was clouded it was left for so long. Played in tune and played amazing! First shot. I have only polished it, fed the board and changed the strings in two years. That guitar was touched by God right when it came off the line!

      @@ericmattei yeah, you really just never know what you are gonna get from Gibson. The second 335 I got was a satin dot, I bought it around christmas and i guess whoever made it was feeling generous and installed the most beautiful figured top on it. I hate satin finishes because they get shiny where you touch them over time and you end up with a mottled guitar. When I polished it to a semi gloss that figuring really popped. But the first one that I had all the trouble with still sounded better. I think I just dig the 57's way better to my ears. I have a Epiphone Sheraton 2 pro right now til I can swing another 335, they almost get there but the differnce i believe is the poly vs nitro finish. Epi's probuckers are really not bad and its the best sound ive heard out of a coil tap / coil split guitar but still planning on another new to me memphis 335 soon.

      @@BillyBlaze7 i had the same experience with a epi pro 335. Really solid guitar. I even gigged with it. Sounded decent etc but that poly finish...nah.
      Gotta say i like satins my friend. Look beauty when worked in ;)

    It’s easy to overgeneralize. I had a 2017 Memphis 335 that I recently replaced with a Nashville 2021 345. The Memphis one had finish flaws, was overly dark and muddy and not very resonant. The nut was a mess and had to be replaced. The Nashville one came out of the box ready to play without a setup. It’s incredibly resonant and a joy to play. It probably all depends on a lot of factors.

    • @ericmattei
      @ericmattei  2 года назад +1

      I agree the Nashville one i played came out set up and really ready to play and is a beautiful guitar. I said that in the video too. However I have three memphis 335s that are just perfect to my ear. Even the one with bb1 and 2 in it. I just find the t type is a bit flat and sharp.

    • @kf8878
      @kf8878 2 года назад +1

      @@ericmattei Understood. My Memphis has 57 Classics which I usually hear great things about but are just muddy and dull in this guitar to my ear. Neck on its own is essentially unusable. Also sounds like a big Les Paul- I’m not getting any of the airy semi-acoustic feeling that 335s are supposed to give you. I do hear that with the T-Types on the Nashville because there seems to be more high end and so they are less muddy. That could have something to do with the specific guitar itself, hard to say. I do need to roll off some treble with these for sure for some purposes, but I appreciate the lack of mud.

      @@kf8878 ive had 57s and man i have to say those are flat and boring. These dont sound like that. Keep in mind i have a crappy samsung phone microphone. Also; i a/b them with a friend at my office and the mhs stole the show. BUT its all preference of course! To each his own.
      Also i do raise the low end of my neck pup. I like a wooly sound and roll off volume.
      Btw i think gibson is bringing the mhs pups back?

    The 2018 sounds like a true 335. It has that character and that’s what’s missing in The Nashville’s T pickups. Also, the “F” insignia on the truss rod cover designates it’s a Memphis built ES. Nice playing Eric.

      Very kind of you Joey. Thank you. Indeed my memphis ebony is the nicest guitar Ive played. Truth ne told Ive played other memphis 335s from that year and they don't have that "alive" sound this one has.
      I feel really lucky I got it. It was lost in a storeroom at a large retail chain for two years! When i asked to see it they couldnt find it. Finally when they did i played it...still perfectly in tune.
      Love it.

  • @1040ecapja
    @1040ecapja 2 года назад +1

    I concur with almost all the comments: yours sounds way better.
    I guess it's the T-top reissues which are quite trebly, but it also could be that yours has had 3+ years to settle.
    On semihollows both the inside plywood layer and the center block are unfinished, and they are exposed to the weather via the f-holes. There's something that happens with age, and it makes the guitar more balanced and resonant, IME.

  • @ericmattei
    @ericmattei  3 года назад +1

    Apparently i didn't differentiate the difference in bridges between the two. I believe the one is an abr-1 and the other is a nashville not sure which is which?

    • @1040ecapja
      @1040ecapja 2 года назад +1

      Both bridges are ABR-1. On yours it's mounted "historically correctly". On the newer one it has Nashville studs and posts, and they put the ABR-1 on top, not historically correct.

  • @BITESIZEJONES
    @BITESIZEJONES 2 года назад

    T style pickups have their own character they're a lower output but very well balanced. Not too hot the way a 335 should sound imo. You push the amp with these style pups and working with the tone controls is very important to eliminate some unwanted higher frequencies. So this comparison really doesn't do much Justice if you don't make the proper adjustment.

    • @ericmattei
      @ericmattei  2 года назад

      The way i see it on this one is 1 in 1 out. If my rig is equal then what i hear is the guitar. I found the pickups abrasive and sharp although well defined. I recently played a 2022 and the pups sounded little more rounded. Could be the guitar. Who knows.

    • @BITESIZEJONES
      @BITESIZEJONES 2 года назад +2

      @@ericmattei I spent a good hour with the es335 60s model. Once you discover that both tone knobs need to be set to (3) tone becomes focused with nice continuity. And I totally understand what you mean by abrasive. It just needs to be tamed. Their are subtle things that need to be discovered with the T style pickups. Height adjustment on the neck needs to be lowered and that's done by ear, by backing up at least 10 feet away from the amp facing it. They are super cool pickups and nice versatility compared to my historics and other Gibsons I own.

    eric mattei: In your opinion can we put theses 335’s in the same category with the custom shop reissues in terms of their tonal qualities and versatility?

    • @ericmattei
      @ericmattei  3 года назад

      I may be the wrong person to ask as I haven't played many custom shop 335 models. But the CS les pauls I've played have been phenomenal.
      What I hope comes across in this video is that the 18 and the 20 are the same model but really two different instruments.
      Their sound and feel in hand to me was different. Some may gravitate to the newer but I love the 18s. I find the rolled edges on the 18 neck and the mhs pickup feel more "handmade"
      One thing is sure is that the quality control at Gibson is remarkably improved. My compliments to them in that regard.

    Memphis did it better. I had one. I regretted selling to fix my teeth. So replaced it with a new Nashville, and so disappointed with the crap they sent out to me. The neck is different, the pickups are different. The neck is very comparable to my 50’s LP RI. On the Nashville. Where the Memphis felt more like a slim taper 60’s of my 61 SG. Watch Nashville, they are sending out junk again. Tool marks, uneven binding, just not cool some of the junk they send out the door it’s hit and miss I suppose.. Watch Nashville.

      For sure the necks are different. I found my memphis felt small but as i got used to it. Man its like its not there its so comfortable. Ive seen some really good Nashville guitars including the one i tried here. My other memphis 335 has all kinds of "mistakes" on it but to me thats just part of being handmade. ;)
