    This just proves that the most influential part of the guitar is the player. A good guitarist can get the best out of anything.
    If I played both guitars, they would both sound just as bad as each other, and no amount of money spent on a guitar could make me sound any better.
    This pair could make a cigar box guitar sound like a Gibson........

    • @craigwelch4597
      @craigwelch4597 3 года назад +6

      Yes, if I could play as good as these guys the guitar I owned would not matter. Also, I’m not good enough to hear a discernible difference between the two guitars. They both sound good. The Epi, to me, is clearly “good enough.” We all have our preferences but the Epi does sound good. If there were no Gibson to compare the Epi to, would you think the Epi sounded good? Based on this video, hell yes!

      I had a Fender Mexican Standard Tele that I put an ad for on a local gear for sale or trade Facebook group. I posted that I wanted to trade it for a Jaguar or a Jazzmaster but that I would consider other interesting trades. I got many lowball offers but I got a message from a guy who asked if I would be interested in an Epiphone Dot. He said that it had been upgraded with the Seymour Duncans and a Bigsby vibrato. I told him that I was absolutely interested. I had played a $2000 Gibson Les Paul a couple of weeks before and I didn't like it very much. While I was on the way to make the trade, I kept thinking "I hope this Epi doesn't play like that Gibson" thinking that maybe that was just how Gibsons play. I was very nicely surprised when I got the Epiphone in my hands. I can't say enough good things about this guitar. It sounds good, plays good, looks good. It has the "it" factor in spades. It has the "soul" that many guitars, including the Gibson I played lack. Every time I look at it or play it, I am amazed at how Epiphone can make such a high quality, intricate, complex guitar at such a low price point. The Dot is the best value in the guitar world today. I don't deny that the Gibson ES-335 is a "nicer" guitar but I can't imagine being happier with it than I am with my Epi.

      I know (I was one of the guys that wrote to Lee for that challenge, and also why I'm mentioning it here too)... I was saying it here for this 335 challenge; (and also Tele and Strat would be great).
      Because the more we see this kind of challenge, and the more blindfold test we do and see, the more we understand that gear is gear and there's not a lot of really "bad" gear today. Even the entry price guitars, amps, pedals, etc.. are perfectly capable and don't sound "ridiculously bad" in comparison to some high-end and prestige expensive gear. So there's absolutely no reason at all to not make music; Music has never been so accessible to everyone.
      And don't get me wrong, there's still some reasons for this high-end gear to exist. But a 10 times more expensive guitar isn't 10 times "better" than a more affordable guitar. But sometimes, it could still be worth the price even if it's just to get the very last percent... on top of the collection value.
      But when we look at the entry prices, regardless if it's some Squier/Epiphone guitars, or even Fender/Marshall/Boss amps, or pedals such Tone City (or other Chinese pedals), we really come a long way from 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. Mass production quality has really improved the last decade.
      Personally, back in the days I was kind of "snob" and would have never bought a Squier, nor even a Fender that isn't Made in the US... But today? I'd buy anything that I try and find good, regardless what is written on the headstock. Few weeks ago, I just bought a '94 Made in Japan Strat for 350 bucks, and she's a beauty and has nothing to be shame in comparison to my 3,000+ guitars that I also love. YMMV
      My 2¢

Let's say upper limit is 500 GBP - so we have quite a lot of Epiphones: Dot, Casino, Casino Coupe, ES339 PRO, Wildkat, but also Gretsch Streamliners, also something from Ibanez would fit into this price range.

I owned several Gibson’s and the epiphones sound great and play great and I changed pickups and run mine thru a great amp and then the rest of the tone is in my hands . It’s not stupidity - face it today they can build great guitars at a much cheaper price , it’s competition and Gibson’s today are not as good as they were from the 50’s- 80’s , they are mass produced with the exception being their custom shop guitars which are hand built by one -2 people . But few can afford those

    I bought an Ibanez AS73 in sunburst years ago which compares to the Epiphone Dot, and it STUNNED me with its fit, finish, and tone. That was the Chinese guitar that made me change my mind about Chinese quality. I like the Ibanez better than my Gibson Lucille, especially if you take price into account.

    Excellent musicians playing great tunes. It makes awesome guitar reviews. Buy the Dot, rent the Gibson if you cut a record. Or swap the pickups in the Dot. Thanks.

    I have an epiphone es-335 pro which I purchased in Andertons. Is got nicer pickups and tuners and a few bits n bobs. But man is it close to a real 335. Closer than the dot and not much more money

      I also have the Epi 335 PRO but I don't like the pickups at all(Classic PRO I think).I've also got an Epi LP Plustop PRO with Probuckers which are so much better.They should put them in the 335.

    Informative and entertaining comparison. Musicianship off the wall! For budget reasons, and after lots of research, I purchased an Epiphone es335 pro. The action needs to be lowered a bit, but for the first time this newbie was able to experience controlled feedback. Love the semi hollow’s tonality. Very comfortable electric for transition from acoustic playing.

    The problems with epiphone are the parts that are easily replaceable; pickups, tuners and other hardware. It makes sense they're cheap because people replace that stuff even on much more expensive guitars! I think Rob mentioned that was what they did on his guitar company too. I love the epiphone I've got and what I've owned before, great guitars with a little work!

      I agree. I had a Joe Bonamassa GT for a while. It was a great guitar (granted, it has Gibson Burstbuckers in it). Not sure about the rest of the electronics, but it was stock. I wish I still had it.

    Law of diminishing returns, there is a very good chance that the pricier Epiphone guitars are going to be the best bang for your buck between the Epiphone and Gibson guitars.

    • @TheGhostGuitars
      @TheGhostGuitars 5 лет назад

      Ah the sound of reason. Always baffles me when people keep asking to do a comparison between most expensive Gibson (LP, SG, 355, etc.) vs the cheapest Epiphone equivalent model. That's comparing apples to oranges.
      What makes more sense is to compare cheaper Gibsons vs the pricier Epiphones. ...Which Anderson's finally did some time ago.

    I played a Dot on my last record. The thing just blew my mind, I used it rather than my 1996 PRS. Through a Marshall it was amazing! The vintage 335 sounds better, but in a dense guitar wall, I am not so sure it matters.

      The ES line are the best guitars in the world. Even the Eppie version stills sounds better than most non Gibson guitars. The only exception is the Guild Starfire VI, and it's South Korean manufactured but is just as good and sounds and plays just as marvelous.

      Sheraton is just a fancy ES-335, but they do have the cool "vine" headstock inlay with the big head! Epiphones are a GR8 deal. I have 3 killer Epis, a custom SG Jr, a custom Les Paul Special & an ES-175 Premium, all for less than 1 Gibson SG Jr.

    I would love to see the exact reversed version of this! The most expensive ES-335 style Epiphone like the Sheraton II Pro vs the cheapest Gibson ES-335! I've heard there's virtually no difference, apart from the fact that Gibson rub all its guitars against unicorns.

    • @devs3720
      @devs3720 7 лет назад +1

      Alejandro Mironov dude, the unicorn dust is magic tho. If u rub your guitar on a unicorn u become Mark Knopfler the second you start playing it.

The other has SD Seth Lover pups and does me just fine without breaking the bank - thank you Epiphone :-)
