335's are a tough guitar to buy. Each one has a personality of its own. They're my favorite Gibson as well as Epiphone. That said, finding the one that you bond with is really a lot of work.

Just like most Gibson's I suppose. Just got done with a disappointing attempt with the new DG335 (Epiphone Dave Grohl signature). Just so far from the PRS Hollowbody II wood library with maple neck and fretboard that has spoiled me for years. Think I might skip the frustrations and just chase a 594 Hollowbody even though I would love to find a way to make a 335 work for nostalgia reasons.

My opinion: you are very, very, very well equipped with your beautiful "PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody 11". You can't accuse her of being uncontrollable (as a hollowbody guitar). It's not the right guitar for the job, but that's down to you and not the guitar.
So I would like to take up the cudgels for PRS here...
My first encounter I remember was in the 90s, when I saw an PRS advertisement with Santana. PRS? Never heard of it. Then I played one (it was a Classic Electric made specially for the Musikmesse in Frankfurt) in my local Music Store and immediately bought it. I was flashed by the feeling, the balance, the resonance, the scale lenght was VERY attractive to me, the neck was (and still is after 30 Years!!!). One day the 3-way switch broke and had to be replaced. I took the guitar to a large music store and had it "repaired". After that, the guitar sounded completely different. Extremely thin, the humbuckers no longer had any punch at all. I complained about it, but they said everything was correct. I couldn't stand that sound, and I thought it was my fault, maybe my ears have changed or whatever... That's why it just sat in its case for years (...so here´s the point why I am an total Idiot...) When I moved, I took it to another dealer (...that was a smart idea...), who discovered that the electrics had not been properly soldered = hence the bad sound. Since then I've been extremely happy with the guitar. I really can only say the very best about PRS. Over the years I've played a few here and there and they've all been wonderful to play. No dead spots on the fretboard, no strange string action... I am not offending Gibson in any way, but from my own experience I have no doubts about which brand I would spend my money on... Best greetings from Germany. Michael.

hey Paul, congrats on the 50th birthday. I’m a little bit ahead of you! I have a Collings I 35 gold top an unusual color for them that I love it’s not relicd- I do have a Murphy lab 54 gold top that I love, I put the music city replacement, compensated wraptail on it and it changed the world for that guitar
One thing I recommend you might want to take a look at is get some aged knobs and other plastic parts maybe the scratchplate from 59 parts I think it’s a Polish company. The guy does amazing stuff because if you look closely at your knobs and the little metal pointers, they’re not aged at all I don’t understand why Gibson doesn’t do that especially now with the Murphy lab fenders able to age everything on their guitars, but anyhow, I replace the knobs on my 54 Murphy lab and it looks amazing. Take a look at 59 parts. The owners a a great guy.

I understand you. My favourite guitar is my cheapest guitar. My mexican strat fat deluxe special edition... I have never seen a strat like that... Weights the double of normal strat but when you play it can feel vibrations of all the woods even the neck... It's a strange strat guitar... Sounds like heaven. I tried to buy another of the same model but it's completely different... Opps and happy birthday!!!!

Happy Birthday Paul ! You're not an idiot . When Gibson changed ownership in November 2018 then new owner James Curleigh and interim CEO Cesar Gueikian were really wanting to correct the Gibson ship . I knew they were going to really want to impress us with better quality Gibson's than in years past . The factory line stuff under Henry's ownership was more miss than hit . The QC was horrible and Gibson's attempts to revamp the line was becoming a joke . So when the new owners released the factory line guitars under their watch , I knew this would be the best time to buy . I actually bought 3 . Flying V , Explorer and the 60th anniversary 59 . I was right . The V and the Explorers are great and the 59 is amazing . I did swap out the bridge and tailpiece hardware on the V & Explorer with Corsa/Faber hardware . Sadly Gibson don't source out great hardware for their factory line . But the sound/tone/feel on early 2019 Flying V & Explorer IMO put the Henry Era models to shame . I have a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Traditional and it is a dud . It feels like Epiphone Les Paul quality . I had to get fret work done and it is noisy when clean . I'm eventually going to have it all redone . IMO the Henry ERA factory line was okay up until 2008 . IDK if the economic crash made Gibson cut corners . I remember playing a 2014 Red wine Gibson Les Paul and a 2014 Gibson Custom Black Beauty at a guitar shop around that time and they were AWFUL . They sounded awful , felt awful and the attention to detail was horrible . I know some found good ones during this era but I didn't . I think Gibson is making some of their best stuff today BUT I think that is about to change . Gibson has been known to underpay and overwork their employees . Being owned by shareholders looking for a quick return and treating employees like shit will eventually show in the product . TBH I've seen some recent videos of bad QC on Gibson factory line stuff . Only time will tell .

Happy 21st! Nice one and congrats! I bought a new Epiphone Rivera (=Sheraton with plainer headstock) on St. Valentrine's Day 1968 and loved those mini-humbuckers. Happy birthday! Such a beautiful 335, I especially liked how it rings when you pick more lightly. My dream 335 is a Rusty Anderson signature. Not the best build quality but it feels great. Soundwise it left a lot to be desired so I swapped pickups four times until I found Monty's PAFs. Best pickups in this guitar by a mile. Buying second hand is great advice for two reasons: one, as you mentioned, you don't lose money. Two, the first ding ist not from you ;-)

    Hi Paul
Happy birthday and what a guitar. Just wanted to share a similar story after watching your video.
Funny things these guitars. I searched for a while playing different r9 guitars each one was different. I eventually found the best one from maybe 10 different r9 guitars and spent a small fortune on it. Then one day i played a strat that was pretty much identical to a white strat i already owned. Long story short i traded the r9 for the white strat. I remember driving back home having a nervous breakdown thinking what have i done "i now have 2 pretty much identical strats" and i loved that les paul. The strat was the same model same pickups ect same colour....
I just connected with that strat more so than any other guitar.
Sometimes you just got to do what feels right even though at times it can defy logic.

I think it would help others when shopping for guitars and when we start to question/feel a same, same but different experience.

    Thanks buddy

    • @djt6546
      @djt6546 7 месяцев назад +1

The 339 is most definitely not like a 335. It’s more like the ES-LP’s that Gibson made for a while around 2015. If you want the shape and style in a small package then go for it, but don’t expect it to perform/sound like a 335. It’s just too small for that.
I was interested in a 339 for a long time because 335 style guitars are so big. Too big I thought. Then when I tried playing these models and comparing them, I realised the 339 was pointless for me. Firstly I actually found the 339 too small in a practical sense. When I play higher up the neck the gap between body and horn is uncomfortably small because my knuckles knock the horn. I also found the larger 335 style body more comfortable because my arm would kind of rest over the body in a comfortable manner. I really wanted to like a 339 conceptually but rather disliked it in my hands. The semi hollow aspect seemed slight to me on the 339 whereas, oh yes, there it is on the original 335 size body. I actually have the Murphy Lab Watermelon 355 now which I got upgraded from a cheaper guitar as a result of a Gibson customer service mess (involving a lost guitar). Do try the both the full size 335 styles and 339 before you buy to avoid any surprise disappointment. Always keep in mind the subject of this video. You can try a row of identical guitars and often there’ll be ones you think are bad and only one or two speak to you. Same, same and yet different 🤗

I remember 5 years or so ago when I realised that I'd prob have to buy a custom shop for any chance of quality. And now years later, even Murphy labs are knocking out sub par guitars. So no matter how much you spend, you still might buy a melon. That ain't right whatsoever. Those guitars should be meticulously crafted and set up to the nth degree. I can't believe 5 to 10 grand can buy you shite. When you can spend 500 and get decent. Sire Larry Charlton for the win.

I think the bottom line is that cost has no bearing on the finished article from a function and tone point of view. It’s like if you got the most expensive HiFi components and they’re all 5* products with amazing cables, sometimes all the bits come together in a way that hasn’t worked in harmony.
I see guitars like this. There are only good and bad guitars, but they’re at EVERY price point. Now if you spend £10,000 on an independent luthier hand made guitar I expect they will try and try again until it’s perfect. You’ll most likely get a wonderful instrument. But all the big brands are making expensive guitars on production lines. Even the high end with more attention to detail, won’t get the same level of attention as the independent luthier who will not stop working until all
the ingredients work together to produce something greater than the sum of its parts. Is it right that there are so many guitars over £1000 that are sub par. I think we can all agree No. But hey ho. Keep in mind for every 5* review of a product there are always lemmings waiting to annoy someone’s turn to get a bad egg. To make matters worse one persons great guitar is another persons worst and vice versa 🙄
The fun and sheer frustration of guitar hunting the model we are after. Ce la vie 😊

Gibson guitars are pretty inconsistent in general but this seems to be worse with the 335s (and I imagine other semi hollows as well). Never played one I liked the sound of, last time I left the store with a 594 McCarty Hollowbody which was far superior in tone and playability. Would love to find a great 335 though

It's almost perfect and will be a keeper, the balance between the two pups is just right and, it can pretty much do anything. Love stripped down guitars, fancy ones always look more like a piece of art rather than a workhorse.

I tried 8 altogether R7's R8's and R9's and came away with my R8 which was not the most expensive didn't have a monster flame top (although it is far from a normal plain top) but it felt, played, sounded, even smelt better than all the others. I still have it and play it every day and have since sold my other 4 Les Paul's as they just couldn't compete.

@@billywagadaggerandthelongg6830 nice, My fave of all my guitars is the 23 Modern Supreme (Massive Red Wine Quilt-top that is almost Black, the light brings out the quilt like the 'Eye of Sauron') that plays like an old thin late 80's superstrat neck. (Reminds me of my 91 US Peavey Destiny)

Gibson Murphy Lab Guitars get bagged all the time, which l don’t understand, “This review is proof” They feel great, they sound awesome and they have Soul, no disrespect “BUT “ if you can’t afford one just keep playing your SE PRS’s and your Epiphony’s and LETS NOT FORGET the Myriads of Gibson Copies out there as well, Really l won’t hold that against you … “REALLY 😂” Great video well done ……
