He's definitely one of the greats. His style is very unique yet you can see every inspiration he draws. His use of dream-like imagery in fantasy art is astounding. Funny you mention Kim jung gi too cus he is my favorite artist of all time. Lol
I love Amano's work! It was so nice to hear you talk about him. Have you ever checked out Ayami Kojima's art? She was the concept artist/illustrator for the Castlevania games.
Amano is amazing, one of the greatest Japanese influences over Westeners. Another great guy is Akihiko Yoshida, a brilliant artist and art director of the gorgeous magnum opus Final Fantasy XII
Here's that channel I mentioned and a link to the amazing Amano mini doc (it's pretty short but GOLD) enjoy and for sure sub to the channel..it's amazing! ruclips.net/video/PJEPhBL77lk/видео.html&ab_channel=Archipel
Ya, I picked the same thing out of the Claire Wendling interview. It's a very good quote. Trying to develop a single, all-encompassing style to define one's self is unrealistic. People are multi-faceted complexes of passions and contradictions. It's easier to develop a style knowing you don't have to give up on a component that isn't cohesive to the whole - knowing you can apply that component to a different style as you see fit. And also, drawing in multiple styles makes it easier to improve as an artist. You become aware of why you are doing something because you have a personal framework to contrast it to.
Great, Rich. Amano is for sure my spiritual animal, for years i always wanted to make something lookin for what he did but there's so many clones and spiritual sucessors of him online that i dont really know if i can add something at the point that i feel confortable on doing it, maybe in the future.
So awesome to see you talk about Amano's work! Other japanese artists you should check out are akihiro yamada, takayuki yamaguchi, hiroshi hirata and tomomi kobayashi Loving your content man you have done videos on so many of my favourites. I'd love to see you do a vid on the old school pre superhero artists like Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff etc. Also Miyazaki's actual comic art like the Nausicaa manga would be awesome.
Drawing on paper is one thing putting it in a film is just insane, this is the style that I look up to the most but my drawing is more a Kim Jung Gi's.
He uses aluminum panels/ metal panels for his artwork. Which is why his artwork has that finish. He also uses printmaking techniques for inks. Also yeah he works with watercolors and paper too. But his more extraordinary pieces are done on metal panels/ aluminum.

Have at least four Amano books, including this one. I don't know if I've seen the documentary, but I bet the name you heard him mention was Gustave Moreau, one of the most disturbing and epic of the Symbolist artists. Definitely see some connection between Amano and the Aesthetic Movement. I have this thick Japanese exhibit book called Beautiful Decadence, which was a selection of many of the more bizarre artists in the tradition of that movement: Beardsley, of course, and those who followed, like Harry Clarke, Alastair, Willy Pogany and Arthur Rackham. They were all into book illustration and have inspired some of the more decorative comic artists.
Would like to see this kind of video for Yoji Shinkawa. Another artist that I equally admire and look up to as much as Yoshitaka Amano. And I think I've heard somewhere that Amano was on of the primary influences for Shinkawa, which I kinda see.
there was a western vampire hunter d comic thats on comixology called message from mars, but think thats a different one. thanks for sharing i love amanos work theres a film he did the designs for called angels egg thats really cool
Amano has stated that he keeps all the originals for any commissions he's done and never sells them, but once in a blue moon makes an exception. Though he has stated he always regrets selling even a single piece of his art.
< My recommendation - Levius By Haruhisa Nakata ( Manga ) > Mannn Amano is definelty one of my recent favs and yea the Archipel documentaries are absolutely insane in the quality they bring to their documentaries about Japanese artists 💪🏽
Are there any Final Fantasy mods where the art style is changed to look like Amano’s stuff? I’d love to see something like that… please make it happen dude, someone, his stuff is too good
Hey. This one isn't really popular, but I REALLY recommend you check out Tomomi Kobayashi. She does the artwork of the SaGa franchise, and her work is gorgeous. Similar in style to Amano in a way, but very clearly different as well. Her use of color is also very different from anything I've ever seen.
dude jimmy reyes is doing a live stream right now and jason..... something showed his color of blaster kid.....long story short, they are talking so good about you right now. they did have some critique about your pencils.... but they called you a genius. they said your inking is top notch. i feel the same way.... keepit up

Yep, first saw this guy's art in the Final Fantasy 6 rulebooks. His art is very free and loose and very Japanese.
Amano has stated that he keeps all the originals for any commissions he's done and never sells them, but once in a blue moon makes an exception. Though he has stated he always regrets selling even a single piece of his art.
Great video
