In which Mr. Wargaming defines the educational benefits of three children's games and how those lessons apply to advanced games as well as civilized life.

There are generations of "designers" who just sell Advanced Mother May I, including the OGs (notably including Kevin Siembieda), and a lot of them are lacking in the wargaming basics that Gary and Dave brought into the hobby back in the day. This brainrot is old and deep.

Foreigner here (no not Canadaian, English), games philosophy on a Saturday morning with my tea: all goes to prove that the GM, DM, REFEREE, KEEPER or what ever the person running the game is called, that role is to mediate and interprate and not to dictate, let the players make the choices (good and bad) then they only have themselves to blame, however the bad choices should also lead to further play not just to eliination or TPK, remember the snakes in snakes n' ladders, they just put you back a while not knock you out of the game....
    More tea now.....

I think there are quite a few drivers around here that never played Mother May I. Quality video.

One of my problems as a DM is to even get the Players to even look at the rules, boy would it be nice if they would just crack that PHB open at least once?
And I am about to drop a RPG hammer when I have been begging for a year almost to the players, to tell me WHERE DO YOU KEEP YOUR LOOT! Well they are all just about to loose it ALL because they keep it at the inn owned by the NPC theif in the party... Oh.. your first guess is.. the NPC theif is going to steal it all???? WRONG!!!!!! They led a NPC Villain, from about their second adventure, the villain is the wife of a Bandit Leader, and she is a Noble??? in title only not in deed, and they killed her husband ( about a year ago, 1 1/2 in game time, Yes I keep track of time!). and she had tryed to assasinate the Paladin in the party ( I have not been stricked enough about the paladin hanging with the NPC dwarf- fighter theif,) and the paladin survived, and the party wisely make shop in the larger city, ( actually the city she lives in, but by doing so, she lost the trail) Well anyway, about a month ago, the Paladin lost his prize +4 sp[lintmail, which was stolen by the family of a dead Player Character whom he turned over to authorities as that character had killed another character. but he lost it because the party hesitated, and had not even bother to buy a horse between the time they started and got to 4th level, every silver piece ( I run a Silver Standard) they ever earned not a dime was invested in themselves ( other than paying for leveling). and instead of getting on the road searching for the theif, then had to go try to buy a horse or 3 ( spending the better part of a day giving thieves who stole the armor for revenge, instead of just Assasinating the paladin ( took advice from someone out to the game as to a few happenings on this one thanks to your advice)!
Anyways long story short, I am about to have Mother May I say... you lost, go back to the beginning because they will not even look at the rules, figure out encumberance, buy a horse..... they will not read the rules at all. and....... what is going to happen is ... The "Noble lady" theif is going to have the NPC dwarf's Inn Burned down, after stealing all of their stuff, and everyone else's stuff in the Inn, then ... because she her self is a Moderately high level Magicuser, ( of the Illusionist persuasion) and she is also a minor power in the Town they are inn, albeit a hated one, she is going to have Illusionarily changed what "Eye Witnesses saw" and try to frame a member or 2 of the party, as the ones who Burned Down the Dwarf theif's inn, the dwarf theif is going to have a arrest warrent for her, and the Paladin wanted for questioning in the whole affair.. ... and most of the Player Characters coffers will soon be bare.......
And on top of it... They have clues, to whom might have done it, but.... they will no follow the clues, they will quickly give up, after they blunder around, and I doubt they will do nothing more then a half hearted attempt at recovering their loot, and taking the Noble Ladies's stuff at the same time, and they will likely call me unfair.... as a DM and who knows what will happen to my group after that all happens. Who knows Will I be DMing for them in the future?? .................................................. Man, its like pulling teeth to get the players do do any thing outside of the game... send me a email saying.. my character is doing this in the off time, or even coming to the game and saying my character did this over the past week (out of game)....
Arg....... I live in a small town.... not many people to pull from when trying to get a group together................... Do I just .............. Sticks finger down my throat to make my self vomit......... and just dm poor modules ... you go down the hallway, open the door, its not trapped or locked or anything, you gank the 2 orcs in the room and find a chest of gold so heavy you can nor carry it home, and the PC have not bother to buy a mule...... ( even though its not the job of the DM to beg the player's to buy a mule, I have suggested it for months now.....) ...... ARG!!!!!!
In the late 70's when I started playing and DMing AD&D... it was not nearly so difficult, didnt have to coddle the players so much as it seems to day..... or just loose my group and hang up trying to DM, or play any D&D at all? Its what Motivates me, well I spend a lot of time 3d printing and painting miniatures to get my once a year, 15mm massive AD&D battle in with ~ 5-700 miniatures on the pingpong table in.....

Was this an insight to how to play games or how to live life? Why not both.

Trivia about chutes and ladders, which may be of interest:
It originally used snakes and ropes instead of chutes and ladders. It was invented in the 13th century by a Hindu philosopher, and was meant to be used for religious instruction.
The ropes represented virtuous behaviors; land on one, and you could climb it to get closer to the realm of the gods illustrated at the top of the board. The snakes represented sins; land on one, and you fall down towards the bottom.
Every player starts at the bottom.
There are, indeed, hidden depths to children's games.

@@MoonMoverGaming This idea carried through to modern times, with some publishers using artwork that depicted children behaving poorly at the top of chutes and children helping others shown at the bottom of ladders.

One of my issues with some of the more recent brosr discourse I've seen is that their Braunsteins also have elements of mother may I, where players just meme stuff into existence to see what they can get away with, while GM's will just ignore orders that don't meet certain criteria (e.g. not amusing enough, or not similar enough to specific books, etc...).

I've never joined an RPG group for this very reason. Instead I've always played Wargames. TTRPGs, I play solo for the same reason.
