I don't live in Pittsburgh but drove by a few times and it used to be horribly polluted driving through. Looks good now. The Rust belt is drawing attention now.
Moved to Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood from New England this year, after checking out the city for a decade. The neighborliness is off the charts; our neighbors are a mix of couples in their 30s/40s and some older Yinzers. We are a 3-minute walk from Brookline Boulevard, which has small specialty grocers, pubs, restaurants, library, USPS, pharmacies, hair salons, etc. We have two bus routes within a 5 minute walk -- the bus trip downtown is 15 minutes (faster than going by car, since the transit tunnel under Mt. Washington is completely separate from car traffic and there's no traffic jams). Definitely not one of the "hot" trendy PGH neighborhoods -- but a great place to live, with some really solidly constructed homes.
I wish I had the language to articulate your accent. It's so American clean, yet incredibly distinct. Moving to Pittsburgh from the SF Bay Area next month. Can't wait.
I was born & raised in Pittsburgh. Still live in the area though I've been to a lot of places throughout the USA. I'm 62 now & if you think you've seen changes you have no idea how much people my age have seen change in Da' Burgh!! The obvious good things are that the city has been able to morph into the technological center it has become and not die a slow death due to the loss of the steel industry, among other blue collar businesses. Plus it has grown and changed but retained some it's it's big city/small city charms. Some of it. However from my perspective, there are numerous losses from my time that make me sad. The richness of the cultural neighborhoods is all but gone. The friendly neighborliness is not there now, though to be fair, that's true in many places around the country. The traffic and buildup is immense, which can be good or not depending upon your perspective. However, I will say that it's still a great place to live. The city has taken on a debonair & sophisticated atmosphere however you're not far from small towns, country or mountains to visit. It's only about an hours drive to Seven Springs mountain resort for skiing in winter, Ohiopyle for summer white water rafting or Fallingwater if you like historical architechtural adventures.
I agree with much of that but the tech boom benefits a very small demographic. I often meet men in their 40s,50s,60s who never got back on their feet when steel collapsed and can't get work in skilled labor because the builders hire Mexican or Guatemalan teams cheap. And I would not call Pittsburgh sophisticated, wearing a Steelers jacket and sweatpants to dinner is not debonair. lol!
Unfortunately there's no small grocery stores in the city center areas. There's no clothing stores, no stores to draw and keep people in the city longer when visiting. It's also unfortunate that the city charges like the bigger cities for parking which pushes people out from coming into the city. We're definitely not using our riverbanks to our advantage. I'm glad that it's been able to reinvent itself but you got to change more than just jobs wise. You pushed clothing stores, department stores that draw people in are gone. There's no big anchor stores drawing people in. I remember coming to the city on the weekend was the highlight of seeing the city and the storefronts. Living downtown is only good if you have the structure so you don't have to go out of the city to get food, clothing, and other essentials. I still like the city but it's got to get the other things right.
@tommeadows-ie2xb I live in the South Hills area. I have within a 15 minute drive or closer, Giant Eagle, Aldi's, Save A lot, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's and a few others. That's one of the reasons I moved to that area. I think that the city can learn alot from NYCs different areas and the small neighborhood grocery stores as well as the clothing and other stores that are in the city and neighborhoods. I spen time in Queens, Forest Hills area and I was impressed with the ease of finding groceries and other stores to shop at. That's what's needed here in our city.
@@tommeadows-ie2xb Giant Eagle has always been the highest priced store. They think because it's a Pittsburgh area store people will be loyal no matter the price. I rarely go to one. I stick with Shop & Save, Aldi's, Save A lot for the most part. Kuhns used to be reasonable so I don't know what happened to them plus there's not many of them around. I don't get there very often either. I've seen that it's the area you're in that dictates the price alot of times too along with the way the store is kept, stocked. I'm alright with the traffic on Washington rd, it does get congested some but that's because you're coming to an area that has multiple businesses so I just deal with it. Plus I know the better times to deal with it too. Mt Lebo is your best spot for multiple stores to choose from and within a 15 minute drive. I have no problem going to multiple stores to maximize my spending on food. I also go to a family store but it's an hour away, well worth it though called Mill St market in uniontown. Most of the prices are way less than regular stores. Like I said I don't mind the drive to maximize my spending, plus it's a nice drive away from congestion.
I'm selling my house on the west coast and relocating to Pittsburgh sometime in the spring or summer of 2025. I have been there a dozen or so times in the last 10 years on business and it grows on me a little more each time.
i left pittsburgh in 1994 and have returned in 2024. i guess "deep agent" isn't quite the right vocab word i'm looking for but i'm not better off than i was in elementary school and look what i acomplished

I have two neighbors on the north side who cannot sell at 170K. Pittsburgh has loads of houses under 150.

pittsburgh is 13 highest cost in housing in country. as a real rate agent i could see you wanting to not have that truth out.
You should explain that the "Strip District" is not a red light area. People might get the wrong idea about the ladies there.
