  • Mindbender at Galaxyland in the West Edmonton Mall was the world's tallest and longest indoor roller coaster for many years. Built in 1985 by Schwarzkopf, Mindbender is an imposing coaster with some powerful positive G-forces.
On 1/30/23, Galaxyland announced this iconic coaster would never reopen and it will be removed. This video was filmed prior to the coaster's removal was known. A similar coaster is reopening at Indiana Beach this year in American Dreier Looping that should still give a comparable ride experience.

    Canobie Coaster would say:
In June of 1986, Mindbender had the back car derailed during the third and final loop. This caused the car to slam into a concrete pillar damaging the car. This caused the lap bars to unlock throwing all four riders into the concrete, leading to the unfortunate deaths of three of the riders. The root cause of the accident was a faulty wheel assembly. The ride was not properly maintained due to issues translating the German maintenance manual. Mindbender did reopen the following year and it has run without incident ever since. However, several redundant safety measures were put in place that are to the detriment of future riders:
One, the trains were reduced from four cars to three cars. This reduced the coaster's capacity 25% and reduced the coaster's overall momentum.
Two, each car had the number of wheel assemblies increased from two to four. In order to do this, Mindbender's trains were comprised of three Schwarzkopf lead cars chained together.
Three, Schwarzkopf loopers were designed to run with just lap bars. The strong Gs on the loops naturally keep riders in their seats. After the incident though, seat belts were added. These do not impact the ride in my opinion. The other restraint that was added...
    A) does impact the ride.
    B) doesn't impact the ride either.

There is a quote that Canobie Coaster said in this video: Meanwhile, Mindbender runs as designed. "Runs as designed" means that the ride feels and runs based on its design and layout. In the quote, "runs as designed" reminds me of a quote from another coaster that Canobie Coaster would say:
PortAventura still duels these two coasters however the ride no longer runs as designed. There is a trim brake on the first drop sapping the ride's speed. You still get airtime in the first half, but the coaster peters out by the end. What about that, Canobie Coaster?
    A) It is glass smooth
    B) It is mostly smooth
    C) It is far from smooth, it has shuffling in spots

Canobie Coaster said in this video:
The only one I prefer is Mindbender's little cousin in Mexico in Quimera. Both Mindbender and Quimera have similar first halves, but if you saw my review of Quimera, you know la Feria removed all the brake runs from that ride. This causes Quimera to run unnaturally fast in the second half, augmenting the already powerful Gs of the final loop and causing some unintended airtime and laterals. Meanwhile, Mindbender runs as designed.
"Runs as designed" is when a coaster feels and runs based on its design and layout. There is another coaster, about that one imagine a quote that Canobie Coaster would say:
PortAventura still duels these two coasters however the ride no longer runs as designed. In the quote, "PortAventura still duels these two coasters" means that the park still operates the coaster with the two tracks together. "However the ride no longer runs as designed" means that while the racing coaster has an interesting layout, it has...
    A) a big issue.

And on that note, Mindbender can be tricky to marathon as-is. That's especially true if you're bothered by the restrictive restraints or positive Gs. Got to love them circular Schwarzkopf loops!
And as I recall, this was actually the last coaster that Schwarzkopf himself both designed AND built (he did design Olympia Looping; but his company went bankrupt and construction was done by the amusement division of BHS; which was later bought out by Maurer AG). If his company didn't go belly up, I think Anton would have designed some intense hyper coasters.
And the founded of Gerstlauer was a former Schwarzkopf employee.

Nope, Schwarzkopf went bankrupt while building Mindbender. Anton Schwarzkopf was even fired by the new management which was put in place during the bankruptcy. This is why the manuals weren‘t translated properly in the end.
Yes, that is true. Today Gerstlauer even owns the former production facilities of Schwarzkopf.

Given my history as an enthusiast Mindbender will always have a special place for me, because this is the coaster that got me over the fear of inversions I had before 2014 when I rode this. As someone who was a very "GP enthusiast" at the time I loved speed and airtime but was terrified of inversions. I had ridden Superdooperlooper at Hershey (a visit where I was like "hell yea" when I saw Skyrush but needed to be talked into riding Superdooperlooper, a glorified mine train. I also picked up the rare credit of Roller Soaker on that trip, something I am not quiet about when the conversation turns to rare credits being that that thing was down over 80% of the time from what I understand) but I always squatted forward so I didn't actually go upside down through it's loop. I rode Mindbender 9 times within 30 minutes, don't know how I did it with the high Gs. But I did it. The coaster that cemented me as an enthusiast 4 months after riding Mindbender is on the other side of Canada, Leviathan.

Only myself and my dad wanted to do Mindbender), it was a weekday so they were doing 1 train ops so they weren't rotating and they let me stay on for 3 cycles at a time, presumably because of G-forces. The fact that I barely met the height requirement at the time (which is insanely high compared to what I've seen at other parks) is probably a big reason the restraints didn't bother me as I know kids tend to be less phased by bad restraints.

That accident really goes to show you that maintenance is extremely important, especially on older coasters like Mindbender, and any Schwarzkopf, Arrow Dynamics, or wood coasters. The parts for older coasters, especially for those for Arrow and Scwarzkopf coasters, are not even common anymore, and so it's important that there is extremely good maintenance. Plus, it's important to run a ride as designed, and I can't say that Quimera and La Feria should have operated that way without trim brakes. That's not a mature way for the park to handle this ride and maintain it so poorly. For that reason, Six Flags Mexico should really be the only park to go in Mexico, since Six Flags has resources for the team there to maintain their rides well.

    • @CanobieCoaster

And now this coaster's track is sitting in a scrapyard, truly a tragic end for one of Canada and Schwarzkopf's best coasters. I was hoping both this and Tsunami down in Mexico (better known as Thriller or Zonga) would be saved, but alas both ended up in dumps. really there was no one interested in buying them? That's hard to believe. Guess the park thought they'd make more selling them as scrap. Well, to be fair, Tsunami was going to be relocated to Germany but didn't live up to safety standards or what not, so it never happened, but with Mindbender there's no evidence the park even tried to sell it. At least, we have Drier Looping opening at Indiana Beach, but that's shorter and less intense than Mindbender. Galaxyland will suffer from this decision, such as by never getting my money which I planned on giving to them someday, because Mindbender was a bucket list coaster of mine, but now that's it gone, screw them , no money for them, in fact I help the park closes down, screw them. Texas Tornado was pretty insane and I felt honored to have it at my home park even if for such a short time. The shoulder restraints on Mind Bender look like the ones on Texas Tornado. Except the ones on Texas Tornado seemed to have a dynamically variable height setting. Meaning you could set them comfortably off of your shoulder before the ride started and at the end of the ride, they would be lower down compressing you into the seat. You could counter this by pressing your entire back flat against the back of the seat and keeping it there for the duration of the ride. Apparently they got enough complaints because AstroWorld ordered new trains which a different style of OTSR. But, it appears the new ones were even worse as it was open for less than a day with the new trains and never opened again after that.

@@gregorymoore2877 That's cool that you were able to ride Texas Tornado. That is sad if the new trains were the reason for its demise. I didn't know that prior to that, it used the same restraints as Mind Bender. I would prefer to keep the shoulder bars low, since I tend to have issues with headbanging, mostly with the ones from B&M, because those sit quite a bit higher than those from Arrow or Vekoma. Lower head restraints are better for me. No head restraints are best, which helps makes Shockwave so good. Alan Trotter Are you asking me? I have not been on Mindbender, unfortunately. Quimera felt a lot more compact than Shockwave, constantly doubling back on itself, and Quimera was a lot more intense in terms of g-forces and in terms of wild and weird moments of airtime/laterals.

Alan Trotter D’oh! I completely glossed right over your mention of SFoG, probably because of the topic of this video. But actually, my answer doesn’t change. SFoG is the largest park in North America that I have yet to get to. I had plans to go the summer before last but got a concussion on i305 and had to cancel the tail end of that trip. Then this last summer I went to no parks. So, it remains very high on my US to do list.

@@mitchellries256 Depends on what you’re looking for. Edmonton’s about 4 hours away from the Rockies, and there’s great ski hills there. If you’re into museums there’s a few good ones, including a pretty decent living history one. Otherwise there’s the river valley that’s pretty cool, and a historic street that’s the center of the nightlife. Not sure how good that is. It’s definitely not a tourist town, more of a roughish blue collar city with a decent downtown as well, although that area can be pricey and sterile in most areas away from the city hall (still reasonably safe). There are a few areas that are a bit sketchy but still reasonably safe during the day. The winters are long and can be pretty cold. I’d say you could stay a week or less before getting bored depending on what you like to do and the season be. All in all it’s not a bad city, but most people come for a specific reason rather than just to visit.

    • @WhiteWulfe
      @WhiteWulfe 3 года назад

Late reply, but I'll give it the best go I can. There are a few ski hills within the city (Snow Valley, Sunridge, and Rabbit Hill), as well as Edmonton Ski Club, but LRT construction has really hampered the operation of the Edmonton Ski Club. If you're used to mountain skiing, they're probably nowhere near the same. Jasper is a few hours away, Banff is 4-5 hours depending on how you drive and where you stop.
Muttart Conservatory is rather lovely to visit. I'm curious how it is now that they've done their deep maintenance on it (it was closed for 18 months to overhaul a bunch of the inner workings).
Edmonton Space and Science Center (now known as the Telus World of Science Edmonton) has a lot of interesting things to it, including adults only events.
The Royal Alberta Museum is located downtown (take an Uber or taxi if you can, parking downtown is outrageously expensive) and word is it's a rather nice facility. In the same area is also the Art Gallery of Alberta.
High Level Bridge is pretty neat looking, and even has a streetcar running on top of it during the summer. Garneau Theater in the same area is rather interesting as well. If you do check out the Garneau Theater, stop by La Poutine in the same area for some really good poutine too.
Elk Island National Park is about 45 minutes to the east. Pack bugspray and sunscreen if you go in the summer, as there's usually a ton of mosquitos.
The Ukranian Cultural Heritage Villange is interesting, if you're into such things.
The University of Alberta's Botanical Garden is apparently rather lovely - I say apparently because it used to be known as the Devonian Garden, but I've never been due to it being outside of the city.
Reynolds Museum is in Wetaskiwin, about 45 minutes or so out of town if I remember correctly
Three hours south in Calgary there's also Calaway Park, but I've heard mixed reviews about the Vortex coaster.
Also approximately three hours south of Edmonton is Drumheller, which has a variety of things to see. There's obviously the Royal Tyrell Museum, with a good amount of dinosaurs, the hoodoos, and the general badlands scenery when visiting (pack water, sunscreen, and keep an eye on the heat, it gets surprisingly warm there). The Star Mine Suspension Bridge is pretty neat too, as is the remains of the Atlas Coal Mine
Approximately 4-4.5 hours to the south/southwest there's Head Smashed In Interpretive Center (now known as Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site). Writing On Stone National Park is also "relatively near" here too. Frank Slide is rather interesting as well, doubly so if one wants to see the aftermath of digging too deep into an unstable mountain...
Oh yeah, there's also arguably Vulcan, Alberta, if you're a Trekkie. No idea what it's like, as I've never been there.
Edmonton has the Valley Zoo, but if you're into zoos I'd say time is much better spent going to the Calgary Zoo, as it's significantly better. I have to have a bit of a disclaimer there though - I haven't been to the Valley Zoo since 2011 or so, before they started all their new construction.

The other restraint that was added does impact the ride, and that would be the accordion-style shoulder harnesses.
There are two ways to position the harness. Both have their pros and cons depending on your personal preference:
The first is to keep the shoulder pads high. The benefit here is that you'll have some clearance between your shoulder and the restraint. This gives you more freedom. The downside is that you will likely hit your head several times due to the snappy transitions that this coaster has.
The second is to press the shoulder pads tightly against your shoulders. This will really lock you into place and they can dig into your shoulders, but it will allow your head to...
