i worked at paragon park in 1963 and rode the coaster over 1000 times. the hill was exactly 93 ft high the other 5 ft was added un maryland. i suggested to charlie dinn to add the helix at the end which burned down in 63 which had a tunnel. all the parts were marked by number before being taken down they were shipped to maryland and put into vats of paint remover at dupont. anything found defective was replaced. all the wood in the middle of the lift hill were made from red cedar heartwood of 1917 was in perfect condition and was reused. the speed in hull was 58 mph and now is about 66 mph. i walked the track in both locations and have the only photographs of both which i use in my lecture on the park. every time i see the ugly condo's i almost get sick. but it was awesome to have had a small part in its survival i went on it 40 timed in maryland
In 1987, my brother saved me from flying out of this coaster. Literally grabbed me with one hand and pulled me back down into the seat at the top of the now missing speed hill before the turnaround. I was 7 years old, small for my age, and just shy of the height requirement... but back then in a much "cooler" world, he was able to talk them into letting me on anyway. I still remember it like it was yesterday, and we still bring it up when we see each other, which sadly isn't as often as I'd like. Sorry to hear about the changes to the track and buzz bars. The very real element of danger was the most fun part. I don't think I'd want to visit it in it's current form. I'll stick with the memory I have from being a terrified kid. I and my then best friend also appeared in the old Wild World commercial popping up out of the ball pit circa 1985. I've searched, but sadly haven't been able to find it anywhere on the internet. Great memories!! It will always be Wild World to me.
I used to go to Wild World with my family and friends all the time as a kid from Maryland. I had no idea this wooden coaster was from Massachusetts and built in 1917. 😲. On weekdays you could ride it over and over with no lines. The wave pool. The crazy giant water slide that I think was shut down because it was probly too dangerous. The sides were low and it dropped straight down very steeply. I almost went over the side on one of the waterslides that I leaned too hard into. I used to find money in the wave pool. In my opinion Wild World was the best. Maybe because I was so little so there may be the nostalgia there but I don't think so. I didn't get the same feeling when it was rebranded Adventure World as much. I guess it finally became a Six Flags apparently. As a kid born in 83, I thank you for bringing back some of those memories👌🏼
One of the most underrated coasters for me. But it's been 20 whole years since I rode it. It was GLASS smooth in the back when I rode it and was wild indeed.
I rode the Wild One in 1999 during my Virginia coaster trip. That must have been just after the modifications you described as the turn around was flat with the double up and double down. I don't remember the trains having buzz bars so they must have had the ratcheting restraints. The other recent additions to the park at the time were Roar, Joker's Jinx, and Two Face The Flip Side. I sampled Joker's Jinx and Two Face at least once. I had already ridden Poltergeist several times, so Joker's was mostly just for the credit. I like that Two Face had seats facing each other. I recall riding Roar as much as possible but I think the line was a little longer than for Wild One, so I spent more time on Wild One. I like trains too, but unfortunately, SFA's train ride was only used as transportation to some catering area, so it was closed to regular visitors. I think the Skull Mountain log flume was another recent addition at the time. It was certainly operating. I didn't ride it because I hate walking all over a theme park in soggy shoes. The next day, I visited Kings Dominion and the next two days after that were spent at Busch Gardens.
My dad used to operate it at Paragon back in the late 70s. He said it was a hunk of junk with planks falling off as the trains would pass. He couldn't believe that it's still around today
I marathoned Wild One at an enthusiast event and gained a newfound appreciation for the ride. It runs remarkably well for its age (and for a Six Flags wood coaster). Thanks for putting a spotlight on this gem!
They always had SO many issues after a while with this ride. I remember it constantly being shut down growing up going to Wild World (I liked that name better lol)
i was a half inch too short to ever get to ride this coaster at Paragon. It is on my bucket list though. I am not a fan of six flags but I will make an exception to ride this one.
I spent weekends in Hull in the early 80s. I recall the summer they dismantled the coaster. We saw truck after truck hauling painted white planks down the only road out of town. I figured they would have used at least some of it to reassemble but perhaps it just all went to a landfill. I was always sad I never got to ride it. However, we did get to enjoy the carousel the summer it was restored, something I only appreciated decades later when I rode it again and saw how beat up it was.
that twisted speed hill seems very similar to a very overlooked and unexpected moment on voyage, its the twisted speed hill directly after the the first 2 camelbacks, both this and the one on wild one are in between pretty filler sections of the rides, they both are a low to the ground fast paced speed hill with a pop of laterals, they both give some fun sustained floater but with an aggressive jolt of laterals, and they both have surprising moments with voyage's having the tunnels as u enter and exit it and wild one having the insane headchopper
When the wooden coaster moved to Maryland they decided to pick three couples to get married on the coaster. because my wife Maryann lived in Hull as a child we were one of the couples picked.
At Six Flags America, there are Wild One and Mind Eraser. Most liked Wild One, what do you think? A) Wild One a bit better than Mind Eraser B) Wild One a lot better than Mind Eraser
But this is a great ride probably my second or third favorite at the park really I find this ride Batwing and jokers jinx pretty interchangeable between my second through fourth spots
@@CanobieCoaster built in 1917 as a side Friction Coaster. Damaged in a fire in the 1930s and rebuilt, damaged in the 60s and rebuilt, then moved to Maryland in the 1980s
Contender for the best coaster there at a park with a GCI a hypercoaster a launch coaster and and a flying coaster (America's lineup is kinda eh........)
I rode with buzz bars and 1999 six flags retracked it took out the old fly wheel for the new ptc train and with new brake system before six flags they ran one train with old lever brake system and could not be run in rain they had no choose to bring it to new safety standards now with a new president at six flags america roar is going to get r.m.c or the topper track from GCI and get a ground up raptor r.m.c depending upon money this park last ground up coaster was 20 years ago with batwing it's time this park got new coaster
@@CanobieCoaster it was insane you went flying out out your seat and those train had 3 rows per train back in the day when six flags baught in 1999 it coast over a million dollar to overhaul wild one at that time roar is due next fore a over haul but if money tight I think roar getting the new topper track from GCI

Very cool information, thanks for sharing! I really wish I could have experienced the ride at Nantasket.

6 year old me was not prepared for this ride as a kid 😂

I'm thankful this ride has lived on to create more memories.
I could only imagine if thing still had its old buzzbars. I could see it being definitely better than Phoenix
I agree it would be amazing!
yeah i agree if this had buzz bars it seems like a better ride
It had buzz bars until 1999, when the park became Six Flags and they bought new trains and re-profiled the ride.
This was another nice surprise on my visit to SFA, as I didn't really have any expectations for it.
This ride really shined on my first trip since Superman was down for the day.

I love this ride.

If this ran with buzz bars, it would likely be my favorite ride in the park.

You're welcome! I agree this is a fun ride to marathon.
This is my first and current favorite wood coaster, and I try to make it a point to ride it every year.
This would be a great coaster to grow up with.
I just visited SF America for the first time. And Wild One is probably my favorite roller coaster. And I didn’t think roar was not that bad.
Wild One is great. Roar is decent up front.
They always had SO many issues after a while with this ride. I remember it constantly being shut down growing up going to Wild World (I liked that name better lol)
It has run great for me in my recent trips.
I love how wild ones que line is in the station lol.

This ride still runs great.
Thanks for the video this is awesome! I never knew about a lot of these reprofiles.
You're welcome!
This coaster is overlooked
Agreed!
Great Video 👍
Thanks!

I wish this were still in Hull. I would have ridden it a ton growing up.

I agree that's a good comparison. I'd say the laterals are stronger on this one though.
@@CanobieCoaster yeah this one looks more aggressive
I think the Wild One is One of the most underrated coasters out there.
I love it.
This is the second best ride at Six Flags America and I’m tired of pretending it isn’t.
It's close to number one.
One of the best woodies imo.
It's great for sure!
This is a great wooden coaster. Its 100 years old and it's still fantastic and even better then the 23 year old gci wooden coaster in the same park.
I agree.
As for paragon park, Think of it as Bostons answer to NYCs Coney Island
Wish I could have made it there.
@@CanobieCoaster me too, too bad that I was born way after it closed

Is Roar or Jokers Jinx next or is Six Flags America done with reviews
I'm going to take a break from Six Flags America, but I'll come back to it.
You think this will be a future rmc or refurbished gci?
I think they'll keep Wild One as is. Roar is the one I could see getting touched.
My only real gripe with this ride is that the trains aren’t super accommodating the larger guest but I suppose that’s with most PTC trains
But this is a great ride probably my second or third favorite at the park really I find this ride Batwing and jokers jinx pretty interchangeable between my second through fourth spots
A lot of the PTCs are narrow.
@@CanobieCoaster Yeah I’ve noticed that millennium flyers are a little bit more accommodating for larger people
am i crazy for not thinking this is a 100 year old coaster.
It opened in 1917 in Paragon Park, but technically the ride has been completely rebuilt.

hey i heard it was a wild one- flo rida
Nice
I love old time wooden coasters but in 2018 I rode it and I honestly don’t remember liking it much I do think Roar is worse though
I've loved this ride in 2010, 2018, and 2020.
Roar did not age well and the new president knows this so roar getting r.m.c or getting the new topper track from GCI that I heard smooth
Roar ducking hurts
