For people who don't know, HKS was a huge aftermarket import racing company in the 90's and 2000's. They specialized in cars like the Supra back in the day.
Was? Is. They're still one of the world's leading aftermarket parts manufacturers. The "was" is the popularity of cars and racing, prompting the chance to make money off of such a company's branding.

You should really try this on more of a sim racer like Assetto, as those games are generally less approachable with a normal controller. The oily/sticky substance is plastic softener oozing out of the material. It's an aging process, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Wiping it with lemon- or orange surface cleaner will help temporarily.
Racing wheels aren't technically better because they're more precise, they're better because the force feedback gives you more information on what the cars doing. Theoretically keyboard is the fastest because it has the fastest inputs
which input method is "better" is entirely dependant on what you're trying to do. if you're playing an arcade racer like trackmania or f-zero, you probably want keys or a thumbstick, but if you're playing a racing sim, you'll likely want some form of analog input, especially a racing wheel. a racing wheel is better both because of its precision and its force feedback capabilities if you want to play something like iRacing or assetto corsa as you will want to be able to make very slight adjustments to your cars trajectory and respond to feedback from the car. a keyboard being faster in this case is useless since, without an insane amount of practice, it is much easier to overshoot your target and lose control of the car. the primary drawback of binary inputs like keyboards is the fact that you're unable to select a position on the axis and stay there, which quite literally means racing wheels are better because of their precision.
@thesaintnoodle I said theoretically for a reason, no other input method will allow you to instantly go from lock to lock and unlike real life slip angle tends to be a very efficient tool in turning due to games not having perfect physics. Beyond all that you do realize quite a few of the top Iracing pros are on controller right? The most important part of picking your input method is preference, I was just speaking on the *THEORETICAL* fastest input method
Omg I had one of these and I miss it so so much! Im sad that mine broke but ive had 2 of them before. but the l-r triggers would always break or jam up. And the backing plate would get nasty too and start to wear off. other then that they were super good for games like Gran-Turismo. Thanks for bringing me back!
This controller is more suited for “actual” racing games with more realistic physics. I’m sure kart racers are designed for regular non-racing controllers
the little pressure readout thing could work for like really precise braking, like in simrigs where you have adjustable pedal travel/stiffness, but youd have to be looking down while in a braking zone...if you need to brake for a WHILE then it could be helpful
yes on the wheel, if your worried about compatibility, companies make little hubs that make the wheel work with any console, and they all work with pc :) This video was fun however!
I was the only person back then actually using the 3D touch type feature with the PS2 shape buttons. Used to actually drive normal traffic speed in GTA
@ 3:50 take it apart, clean the deteriorated rubber coating off with denatured alcohol, reassemble. In the meantime, cut the flat panels off of the clear tray, keep it in tray while using.
like for example, it would mean that i can use clutch in a controller, wich gives even more control on sim-cades o simulators in general, like, i would use the x and sq yeah, as break and gas, and the right "trigger" as a clutch, and the left one maybe, just maybe as an e-brake, the top bumpers to change gears, and everything else as whatever else the game asks me for, like, the triangle to turn on the car in one or other game, the dpad for the tipical comunication shmut that i dont use, but one thing is what i think of it, and other completely different is what it would actually be like
I bought this controller when it first came out. I still have it and the soft touch plastic has turned sticky on mine as well. I really liked using it for playing Need for Speed and other racing games on the PS3. I wish I knew of a way to remove that sticky plastic.
Hmm, that kart racing game genuinely looks good. contrary to you I'm one that plays a lot of racing games, I'm one of those with a full racing simulator, but there is not that many arcade racers that I play, but this looks interesting, and free :O. I also have a weird racing controller somewhere, it's the (Thrustmaster F1 Wireless Gamepad, Ferrari 150th Italia Alonso Edition), had to google the full name because it's way too big, it is more normal of a controller, but around a rather small dpad it has a wheel like thing that turns like a total of 90º or something, weirdly enough I did enjoy it quite a bit, but that was 10 years ago and it must have been one of my first gamepads i had, apart from my gravis (or knock off of one) that I had in the 90s, surprisingly the thrustmaster is also still available for purchase and very cheap.
A good racing wheel will give you a completely different experience than a controller. I highly recommend it. But you really need a good one tho. Probably $200 minimum for a decent one.
What is funny is that HKS (which is a pretty good quality aftermarket parts manufacturer) put their name on this... I have an HKS sport intake on my 1985 Toyota AE86 lmao
You missed out on the functionality of the pressure sensitive button by not playing a racing sim. I imagine it's not great, but the display would let you know how much throttle you were using.
I had a madcatz playstation MLG controller that had this happen to it over the years. I like that controller since it is a 360 clone for PS3 basically, so I saved it by taking it apart, and scrubbing the sheeze out of the back plate with rough sponges and dish washing degertent. Alcohol based stuff might have been there, maybe soaking some oil into the dishwashing water since oil and sticky stuff repel each other better. It was mostly just the scratching thing that made the controller into mostly semi glossy black finish and I can enjoy RE5 on PS3
You missed out on an ASMR section. PEOPLE GO NUTS for people cleaning things. You should have recorded that bit and used a toothbrush on it just for a few sound bytes. Also, wireless controllers are almost always heavier because of the batteries. The pressure meter is very helpful for people trying to dial in their drifting and cornering on certain turns while working on time trials. Also, attack the buttons from a little lower position, find where it's comfortable to rest on both the gas and the break... Also, you can use that switch on the back to assign the thumbstick whatever you want for item throwing and emotes...
2:30 _Mouse with a little joystick on the side of it. Why would you want that?_ Good for one handed gamers like Champutee. ZLOT makes a vertical grip mouse like that.
They really downgraded the triggers to make people use those buttons. There's a reason why every racing game uses the triggers for throttle and brake, simply because it works perfectly.
@@P_D-px6iv it is still better than two buttons being one next to the other. You can easily press X and Square at the same time by accident, while you can't do this when using the triggers.

Cool, I got one of these few years ago. I had to take it apart and clean the rubberize coating off everything with 99% IPA.
damn a new episode of nugget hunting and it has everything from diasgusting rubber to dubious named brand with dubious quality
only thing missing is shitty notebook from 2000s and naming the props
Guys it aint that deep that it wasn't tested on sim racing games. It's literally a controller turning into ooze. And im here for the ooze
im not gonna lie i had a physical reaction to those awful joycon lol
This controller is more suited for “actual” racing games with more realistic physics. I’m sure kart racers are designed for regular non-racing controllers
the little pressure readout thing could work for like really precise braking, like in simrigs where you have adjustable pedal travel/stiffness, but youd have to be looking down while in a braking zone...if you need to brake for a WHILE then it could be helpful
That's the best Kart Racer on the market? Ha, don't make me laugh. We all know it's about Kart Rider. lol
In all seriousness, interesting controller.
yes on the wheel, if your worried about compatibility, companies make little hubs that make the wheel work with any console, and they all work with pc :) This video was fun however!
could you test this controller with other games? would be interesting to see this controller playing something like Dark Souls or a 2D platformer
Harmon Smith’s gonna be pissed hearing about the new kart racing game
you can (usually) remove the liquified rubber from things with isospropyl alcohol, it quite literally just wipes away
I was the only person back then actually using the 3D touch type feature with the PS2 shape buttons. Used to actually drive normal traffic speed in GTA
Sometimes I wonder if someone besides me uses the R-Stick for accel/decel in Mario Kart 8D lol
I don't play Mario Kart 8D because I don't have a Switch; but, I've been using the right stick for accel/decel since the PS1.
@@mattdavis9601 actually based lmao
Alcohol wipes, Ispropanol or simply cleaning alcohol gets rid of the rubberized coating and leaves behind perfectly smooth plastic
You're a man of culture... Love those Arcor strawberry candies lol
Bootleg Dankpods lol
I love playstation dank pods 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣💯💯💯💯💯💯
Huh never seen anything like it. I'm excited to watch this now. U got a sub
Stampede racing Royale to me looks like a spiritual successor to Little Big Planet Karting, especially in the animation of the characters.
@ 3:50 take it apart, clean the deteriorated rubber coating off with denatured alcohol, reassemble. In the meantime, cut the flat panels off of the clear tray, keep it in tray while using.
try it for rally racing if you can
i personally think that controller can be amazing for someone who like simulator-like games
like for example, it would mean that i can use clutch in a controller, wich gives even more control on sim-cades o simulators in general, like, i would use the x and sq yeah, as break and gas, and the right "trigger" as a clutch, and the left one maybe, just maybe as an e-brake, the top bumpers to change gears, and everything else as whatever else the game asks me for, like, the triangle to turn on the car in one or other game, the dpad for the tipical comunication shmut that i dont use, but one thing is what i think of it, and other completely different is what it would actually be like
Use wet wipes to clean the soft touch rubber that is dissolving, it worked for me on a 1987 sony walkman that had the very same sticky issue
thank u for the game recommendation, i already have 2 hours in stampede!
He needs to ware gloves.
Bro tryna be dankpods so bad
This looks like something someone would 3D print and then send to Uncle Derek
A good racing wheel will give you a completely different experience than a controller. I highly recommend it. But you really need a good one tho. Probably $200 minimum for a decent one.
why do you have fake paper psps and a vita on your desk bro🤣
What is funny is that HKS (which is a pretty good quality aftermarket parts manufacturer) put their name on this... I have an HKS sport intake on my 1985 Toyota AE86 lmao
Ngl I kinda want one of these for the sole reason of playing anything but a racing game. Ala Guitar Hero Dark Souls.
You missed out on the functionality of the pressure sensitive button by not playing a racing sim. I imagine it's not great, but the display would let you know how much throttle you were using.
The mouse with a joystick is probably for one handed play.
Oh my god I actually own this controller and I've owned it for years.
XD do you use it regularly or does it just collect dust?
the fact that HKS put their name on this is so wild
You can use acetone to remove that soft touch rubber
Bro really played with a controller made for racing game with a non racing game.
That's like playing mario kart with a sim wheel lmfao
Use rubbing alcohol/Isopropyl alcohol to clean the rubber.
I assume they were acquired by Lexip, as Lexip has been around for quite a while already.
The cable is better than the snes mini, those things are so short, i struggle to reach the settee with those!
Ur right hand, first finger for square, middle finger for x.👌
No freaking way. This game is basicly mod nation racers
That game looks like Mod Nation Racers.
My favorite kart racer was Blur lol
You would need to flock the controller to stop any glare 😂
Wade has changed over the year's...
Why would you want that?_
Good for one handed gamers like Champutee. ZLOT makes a vertical grip mouse like that.
Maaaaan I would of been unstoppable in forza4 if I had this on the Xbox😂 I think the concept is really cool.
They really downgraded the triggers to make people use those buttons.
There's a reason why every racing game uses the triggers for throttle and brake, simply because it works perfectly.
Eh it's not like the stock PS3 controller has analog triggers either
There's a reason most racing game players preferred the 360
@@P_D-px6iv it is still better than two buttons being one next to the other. You can easily press X and Square at the same time by accident, while you can't do this when using the triggers.
You really need to invest for a pair of gloves, in case of biohazard things like this one lmao
it's baffling why you didn't use it in something it's clearly designed for like gran turismo
I had one of these when they came out. I loved the way it looked but it totally was so janky imo but still kinda fun in a way but if you played gran turismo it was not as good as I’d hoped for
People say you're like DankPods.
But I'd say you're slightly closer to James Channel.
This woulda been fun for Most Wanted or Carbon or something.
Give this to a fighting game player and see them cook combos
