My sister loves magic realism, but is utterly uninterested in fantasy, whilst I love fantasy so much that I write it. She said she'll at least read my books, even if they are fantasy. "All classic fantasy is just Fairy Tale garbage!"
Why do people make out Fairy Tales like it's a negative trait for a story?!
I LOVE Fairy tales. Especially the Grimms Brothers versions. It's fun to see how brutal and interesting the old school stories can be.
My favourite Brother's Grimm are the ones like The Girl With No Hands. Grimdark should really be Grimmdark.
And there's the classic murder ballads like Twa Sisters/Minnorie/The Bonny Swan.
@@YAUUN
I think my Favorite's gotta be this one where this boy was abused by his father so much, he decides to commit suicide by drinking poison. But it turns out the poison was Hungarian wine, he gets drunk and dances at a wedding, and then he dies from too much alcohol.
People tend to treat "fairy tale" like a negative trait because people associate fairy tales as a childish form of literature, not helped by Disney doing their best to softball them and make fairy tales even more the domain of children. It's this viewpoint that I imagine is the impetus for a lot of the "old fairy tale but make it super dark and full of murder, sex, and violence" modern fantasy.
@@Mokiefraggle yeah it's the same with cartoons which are now also becoming increasingly violent and mature in theme. I know so many people who won't watch anything animated because they think it's only for children and miss out on so many amazing stories because of it.
@@Pandemia616 Honestly, I feel like modern animation (well...western animation, at least. Less so Japanese anime) is actually getting steadily more softball and toothless. You wouldn't see stuff like _Gargoyles,_ or _Batman: the Animated Series_ getting the green light nowadays, as opposed to the 90s. You'd never hear the line "Pay a man enough, and he'll walk barefoot into Hell," in a modern cartoon, for instance, nor have the sheer amount of implied death, violence, horrific human experimentation, etc. that was present just in those two shows. Is modern western animation more friendly and accessible for neuroatypicals, LGBTQ folk, and people of all walks of life? Sure. But it's also a lot more bright and happy than a lot of 90s stuff, and a lot less grim.
The manga one gave my flashbacks to early-Daniel.

"I'm not saying woman can't write fantasy" haha, yeah... I had a guy who was teaching fantasy literature at uni tell me that there were NO female fantasy authors due to the definition of fantasy that he used 🤢
Instant loss of respect
Damn what the hell what sort of definition is that 😂
I'm kind of interested in what kind of definition he had, I mean unless you specifically include the words "Written by a man", how do you exclude all female authors from the definition?
How on earth can you define fantasy so that Ursula K Le Guin, Katherine Kerr, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Elizabeth Moon, Diana Wynn Jones etc aren't inclued? Not to mention all the modern ones.
So he never heard about R.F. Kuang, Suzanne Collins, Fonda Lee? 🤣 Also, you can tell him that if he doesn't like female authors he shouldn't come to the Nordic countries since we have many! And they are great!
I can't imagine someone so openly sexist being in a teaching position. Yikes.
"The theatrical cuts are objectively better," is just as objectively wrong as saying, "The theatrical cuts are subjectively better," which is as objectively wrong as saying, "The theatrical cut is better than the extended in some ways."
I actually had this exact conversation (argument) with a friend a while back. After shooting down all his objections to the extended editions he settled on "They're just too long". And no, he hadn't read the books (unsurprisingly). Face meet palm.
When it comes to LotR the director's cuts for Fellowshiop and Return are certainly better, but I can see an argument being made for the theatrical Two Towers given it leaves out a lot of the slower bits and extended treebeard sequences...
but I haven't watched the theatrical cuts since they were in theaters and have see the DCs dozens of times, so I have no idea if that's actually true or not.
@@robbybevard8034 Yeah, there's still a lot of good stuff that leaves out too.

There's also the variant on the "if you're excited for this adaptation you're a naive child" that goes "if you're excited for this adaptation you're a paid shill" that is currently being screeched by a very small but very shrill minority of the Wheel of Time fandom...
"He said the line calmly in the book and screamed it in the movie, this is a completely original critique that totally hasn't been made a billion times already and I'm super cool for having said it."
The Harry Potter example is less a case of people hyper harping on that one moment, and more that it's easy to point to as an exemplar of all the things being done wrong.
It's like Batnipples aren't actually what made Batman and Robin bad, and nuking the fridge didn't make Indy 4 bad, and the characters wearing their kimonos backwards in Avatar indicating they were dead because the costume designer didn't know anything about the culture...
