i love that look of shock and awe on ZigZag's face as he first lays eyes upon the lair. its such a subtle thing, but you can tell it was NOT what he was expecting, and he isn't used to seeing such things. having served in a palace for so long where the people dress prudely and people are polite and quaint, to suddenly be bombarded with images of sin and lust like this would absolutely be a shock to his system. and its conveyed so brilliantly in a three-second shot that most people won't think twice about... Richard Williams really created something special.
He probably wasn't expecting them to be so organized. He went in there thinking it would be a bunch of loincloth wearing, starving muscleheads but what he found were basically techno-slavers.
@@tiptap2352 I'd say both, really. You can tell by his expression that he's thinking that *maybe* he didn't quite think his plan through all the way.
@@tiptap2352 Starvation and muscle don't go together at all. Musculature is a mark of might and the result of good nutrition. Throughout history, the capacity to consistently secure good and plentiful food was a sign of power.
You put my thoughts into words, man.
@@mooseolini1447 hungry people are stronger than you'd give them credit for. desperation tends to make people do unspeakable things, things you didn't think people were capable of

Back when animators catered to dads as well as their kids. lol
Zigzag's guide to making friends and influencing people.
Step 1: Walk into a hostile army's camp with no guards or protection.
Step 2: Vandalize their flag.
Step 3: Act like a coward rat and call angry warriors "gentlemen" (even though "gentleman" word didn't exist in Asia).
Step 4: Claim to have power over beasts even though you can't control your pet.
Step 5: Say you manipulate people to someone who now thinks your trying to manipulate him because of it.
The balls (pun intended) on ZigZag for coming into the lair of an incredibly evil tyrant and being like "Oh, also, I'm a master manipulator, I think everyone other than me is stupid and simple, boy I enjoy tricks and deceit".
Yeah...he should of kept that part for himself
I love how annoyed One-eye looks when Zig Zag tries his magic tricks and then has him thrown to alligators to just to test how good he really is.
Everyone always seems to be annoyed by whatever Zigzag does.
Its his annoying rhyming
President Kudsi I guess he didn't mean any test... it was a game of words to kill ZigZag
Абдаллах Муслим I think so too. It’s not a test but an execution!
@@kayalandry2249 like constantly talking in rhyme?
Dude the cards scene must have been so brutal to draw and animate... so perfect.
I believe that Richard actually animated it himself.
Truly an amazing artist, but unfortunately too ambitious and too perfectionist to put this movie out in it's intended state, before his death.
This is some of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous animation I've ever seen. I geeked out over just the way ZigZag's robes and the flags flow in the wind toward the beginning.
The real topper is the cards though. Every single card individually hand animated and not a single card is repeated.
It's absolutely fantastic. Richard Williams was a master of his craft.
@@cheezemonkeyeater the way his fingers and arms are moving around too in that scene is also great because of how hectic and fluid it is.
@@ethanlaborde bad at storytelling though

Fun fact:
This movie took THIRTY years too make!
Um no it did take a long time though
30 years and it still wasn't finished.
@@jacobodom8401 it did actually. and the version that came out is actually still incredibly unfinished. The story of the creation of this movie is quite a wild one, I reccomend looking into it.
Technically new versions of this movie with added materials originally considered are still coming out so this movie is still unfinished.
Fun fact: this comment section is still unfinished!
The way Zigzag tried to subconsciously suede the one-eyes through peppering in sublime references to eyes lol. Genius
It's incredibly entertaining, that's for sure. And it shows how slimey and desperate for manipulation Zigzag is. Funniest part to me is how the One-Eye King just seems irritated by it.
@@allendrake6960 yeah, he gets the expression on his face that he knows he's getting fed a line of bullshit by ZigZag, and he's not biting.
So awesome how Zig Zag walks the line between comic relief and unsettling villain.
Vincent Price’s voice acting and the animation of his face are just perfect at 2:52. The tone changes in a micro-second.
Catchy jazz sounding music, thicc dancing girls. Barbarians sure know how to party.
One hell of a sexy party, that's what I always say.

Gotta freaking love that awesome zoom out on King One-eye's eye.
i like how the one-eyes, instead of having their single eye set in where the forehead would be, or in the center of their face, is instead off to the side, making them appear asymmetrical, with where the other eye would be resembling a tightly shut eyelid. very unique character design!
I very much doubt it's natural - more than likely, One-Eyes tribe pluck out their right eye as part of a manhood ritual. If you look closely at One-Eyes slave women, their right eyes aren't missing, they're covered by their headgear. Only the men are missing their eye, and they all miss the same one.
I though only Mighty One-Eye was a cyclopes and everyone else removed and eye as a sigh of fealty.
This whole movie just has a hypnotic flow to it, and ZigZag is one of my favorite animated characters ever.
0:48 That :O face Zig Zag makes when seeing One Eye's camp is so hilarious, it's clear what he's thinking in that moment because with serving in the King's palace as vizier so long he'd never before seen a place like this with a smacking of every sin that has a name.
I love how when ZigZag first sees the camp, he's shocked, tries to get a hold of himself and brace himself against the stimulus, and then just completely falls apart in shock
I wish there is a longer version of this theme...is so good.
True, it's such a banger
Maybe edit to make it longer? It would be very awesome!
It’s like Arabian jazz and by god i love it
Look up Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade.
@@sesfilmsllc Why is that? Is it similar to the piece above, or is it actually the piece?
0:46 I like this shot because up to this point, you don't really get to see any kind of emotion from zigzag other than anger, greed, or deceit. But here, you can see just disgust
Disgust or shock. Maybe both.
He looks pretty surprised as well
Disgust as in he’s grossed out by One Eye’s girls, or just disgusted (Morally) of One’s Eye’s debaunchery?
He doesn't look disgusted, just shocked. He's lived in a cushy palace, bathed in pomp and opulence his entire life. Now for the first time ever, he's confronted with a den of pure debauchery and carnality.
@@WobblesandBean the whole middle east prior to the introduction of Islam, or even christianity, was a degeneracy haven of debauchery and carnality, look up aincient babylon and the shit they did back in the day

I like his Calvert voice actor more.

Didn't realize how One Eye was such a Chad😂.
Vincent Price is absolutely phenomenal in this. Could watch this scene all day
One-eyes Acrobat minions are so cool. I like that they exude a power of their own, like they’re not submissive to him but more like part of his warrior’s force. They’re completely stoic and powerful in their own way.
So basically what you have here is pre-Sorcerer/Genie Jafar looking to team up with Shan Yu and his Hun army and sell out before they invade Agrabah
Wow, the One Eye army has a post-apocalyptic Mad Max style feel with that horn rock background music.
+J. Cav Dude, and they have a war machine later on in the movie, where they have warriors jumping on drums to provide war background music. I was thinking the same thing. This is so mad max.
That's funny, I assumed they were the Mongols.

One-Eye has got to be one badass villain. I really can't understand why he has so many teeth especially on the top part of his mouth.
I think they're set in rows like with sharks
Hyperdontia.
And that voice! One-eye's voice is very fitting for a character so big, so terrifying, and has total control over his domain.

Take this piece of advice: "If you feel that you're a villain and you don't have a hoe throne, what are you doing with your existence?"
You're not supposed to like that, he's the villain and he's literally treating women as objects, ffs 🤦♀️
@@WobblesandBean You love it.
If I plan for world domination a Hoe throne would be on my to-do list, like dude just imagine the massive Flex during negotiations and meetings.
You point out that one eye is a villain and yet somehow miss what op said?
Zigzag yanking Fido's leash, him jumping through the hoop, and then running away, is not only so expertly paced and animated, but is easily the funniest part of the whole movie.
Zigzag promises to feed Phido and the alligators, only to have them eat him in the end when he failed.
At least he was good to his word.
He sure fed them, alright!

@Lizardguy you can edit the movie so that his voice overlaps with Jafar
Makes Jafar even more camp than he already is and by god i would watch that and love it
the main diffrence between the two is jafar could use actual magic.
zigzag was playing it up but was more a stage magician.
You have no clue how awesome this animation is.
This is one of the great tragedies of our time, todays generations raised on a steady diet of flash/3d CGi won't ever be able to truly appreciate the beauty and difficulty of the old ways of animation. And honestly, had flash and CGi simply evolved alongside traditional animation methods instead of completely replacing it, the medium would have been better as a whole for it, some of the most interesting animation I've seen was when traditional animation and CGi were blended together (Treasure Planet, for instance). But instead of using it to push the medium to new heights, it was instead used as a flat-out replacement to cut costs as much as possible. When do you ever see as much effort put into CGi or flash animation as the effort clearly put into this traditionally animated scene?
Yes I do.
@@BDNeon While this movie is truly beautifully animated, you have to remember one thing: It was never truly made. Williams was unwilling to cut corners or take shortcuts, and because of this the production of this movie turned out to be impossible.
@@BDNeon there is still 2d animation being done, not in the USA that much tho

thief and the cobbler, the animation film made entirely by sequencing 70's prog rock album covers
zigzag fels like the only chracter they really put any time into besides the thief. i would not have minded if zigzag was the main focus insted of tack.
They were constantly trying to figure out how Tack was going to look like. He didn't have a conclusive design until around 1990.
@@tobbs5410 i know the movie took forever. but you'd think the main character's design would be the first thing you'd work on.
@@megamike15 I can't exactly speak for Richard Williams, but I get the impression that he wanted things to be just right, and was more interested in getting the set pieces done than characters. He knew what he wanted from Tack and a rough idea of how he'd look but the project had a very complex history and had patches where almost no work was able to be done. Mind you, if you think Tack is a such a boring character I'm not sure why this would be your concern.
Many early animated features had rather bland, template protagonists.
It’s probably why the villains were more interest, with their flamboyance and theatricality.
@@BlackCover95 I wouldn't say that this was an 'early' animated feature. Say what you will about Tack being a shitty and boring character, but I find him vastly more likeable and amiable than half of the contemporary Disney protagonists from around 1989 and onwards.
I mean in his defense he does charm those alligators.
In any likelihood, if we’re going by reality here, and since The Thief and The Cobbler is set somewhere in the Middle East, chances are those Alligators the One-Eyed Barbarian King spoke of were likely Chinese Alligators, and alligators are only found in the United States and China.
3:32 this has basically become my go-to catch phrase of when someone should be punished
This must be from The Recobbled Cut
If only the writers and animators could go back and actually finish what was supposed to be shown in the movie and fix some scenes that weren't finished during production. That was, the film would've been more interesting to watch.
What could I possibly say that would describe how much I love the visuals of this movie?
One Eye remind me of Aku from Samurai Jack
Where instead of a giant demonic sorcerer like Aku, One Eye looks like a giant demonic barbarian.
King One Eye doesnt take Zigzag for real lol

I wish the song in this scene was found
1:43 He twists his head and upper torso entirely around. The next shot shows him continuing in the same direction, so he never untwists.
That's why the next shot is him getting up off the ground with his hands. He fully rotated his body until he lost his balance. So he had to stop himself from falling on the ground using his hands. You also see his feet spasming from the effort before his head twists around.
At least that's what it looks like to me
