    I purchased I believe it was a Car Craft mag that spoke of back in the day when they did an original drag test on a ‘69 ZL1 Camaro. I remember it said the first couple starts they attempted had blown the tires to kingdomcome. They had played with the carb adjustments, opened the breathing and put some narrow slicks on there and ended up running mid 11s at better than 120mph.

      Yeah, with open headers or 3" dual exhausts, the ZL1 all aluminum big block Chevy/BBC 427" dynos at 530 HP stock and the iron BBC L88 427" at 560 HP stock... at 6600 RPMs... L88 engines were simply listed as an option in standard Corvette sales brochures... with option of 4 speed or even automatic transmissions... choice of rear end ratios... although disguised with a "430" HP rating so unknowing rich kids would opt for the more streetable 435 HP tripower 427" engine option... in 1970, the L88 was replaced by the similarly built iron BBC LS7 454" over the Parts Counter crate engine, not offered or installed in cars... unless you knew the right people at GM... 254/254 degrees duration cam for solid flat lifters...
      In 2006, the new all aluminum small block Chevy/SBC LS7 427" engine came out in Corvettes and later in Camaros... also as a crate engine... it's internals were made of exotic metals and, thus, was priced at $16,000.00 a pop! Rated at 505 netHP... about 530 grossHP with open headers or 3" dual pipes/mufflers... it is much more tractable than the earlier engines, gets good MPG, and, incredibly, works well from 500 - 7,000 RPMs... because of milder cam spec.s... 210/229 durations... roller lifters cam... unusually wide 221 degrees LSA... a cam change can bump it up over 600 HP...

    The 69 ZL1 is more like 550 HP but not enough too beat the Chrysler hemi and I'm a Chevy guy

  • @darrellsomers5427
    @darrellsomers5427 3 месяца назад

    More like 550 horse power the all aluminium L88 rat ,yet the Chrysler 426 hemi was better and could take more HP/boost and I'm a Chevy guy ,the ZL1 option was 3.400 bucks on top of the regular price of a 69 Camaro

    The mk1 camaro's width is too small for a stable ride. Except not when you turn it into a lowrider.

      ZL1 and L88 are RPO codes for the build of the car, in this case these two are engine options, and the ZL1 was a special order referred to as ‘COPO’ (Central Office Production Order).
