Thank you for your excellent video - both channels now working - after watching your video I suspected the switch, which after putting the unit from play to record a few times sorted the issue :-)
I'm glad!!! Thank you!!! Yes the switch for Record & Playback it can cause a loss of sound of either channel due to corrosion on the contacts inside the switch. If you can manage to clean the contacts much better if not try to spray a contact cleaner but be careful in contact cleaner some of them are harsh on the plastic parts. It can cause damage.
Question: I have a Technics 630 and it’s in amazing shape other than the right channel drops because of that rec/play switch you mentioned. When I crack it open and hose it with Deoxit D5 it sounds good as new but it will only last a few days before it’s right back. I tried putting a blank tape in every day and just switching the record and play back and forth about a dozen or two times but it seems to never want to go back unless I hose it down again. Is this thing trash? I want to just replace it but I don’t want to spend hundreds on another deck and have the same problem 😭
Deoxit D5 sometimes cannot clean the contacts inside. If you know how to pull out the switch from the circuit board then pull it out. The crucial part is take out all parts inside the switch be careful there are small parts. Then clean the contacts by soaking it in a white vinegar or lemon to remove the corrosion.
Excellent video! My TEAC A-380 has the exact same problem and I think I've narrowed it down to the NE545B IC as the culprit. Do you happen to know if you can use an IC puller to remove it or does it need to be desoldered? Thanks for making these great videos!
@@Woodys_Hobbies Mechanically, the Rec switch is functioning smoothly. I also cleaned everything with deoxit. No leaky capacitors either. Is there anything else I can do before replacing that Dolby NR IC?
The problem I am having is that my machine doesn't record on the left channel. Playback is ok on both channels. Could it be the IC (there are 4 in total on the machine) for the left channel recording section of the circuit that is likely causing this? Thank you.
Before you replace IC check first the contacts of the play/rec switch. This switch is connected to the record button. This switch can cause a problem like no sound, hiss, cannot record, or sometimes humming. Your last option is IC but check first the other components or try to resolder the circuit board.
Check the Playback and Record switch try to clean the contacts. Sometimes in electronics there are many the same issues but different reasons why it has no sound. Try also to check the transistors.
@@Jamesnov1970 if you know how to pull out the switch take it out then clean the contacts inside. If not then use a mild contact cleaner. Check contact cleaner first before applying some contact cleaner can damage the plastic parts.
Put a cassette tape with a tab press the record and play button together then press stop after 2 seconds do this many times. The problem you have is a loss contact in the playback/record switch inside.
@@Woodys_Hobbies thanks for the help, but it goes back to normal before i do it. i don't know why, i just leave it for a night and then it normal again. but next time when it happen again (hopefully not) i will try it.

Thank you! This helped me repair my cassette boombox. Record/ play switch needed cleaned with deoxit spray. Lifesaver.

Oh no I'm not a master buddy just a hobbyist.😊✌

Thank you sir. You save my Akai GXC-725D it has exactly the same problem with noise reduction IC.😉

Had the same issue with rs-635/m-205 tape, left channel, figured by swapping ne646 between channels.
Than the same for right channel few mounth later...
Yeah that's one the technique by swapping from other channel.
@@Woodys_Hobbies The funny part is that I had to go out-of-box thinking while I do the same diagnosing server issues and swapping CPUs

You need to desolder the IC. Did you check the Record switch? Sometimes this switch cause this kind of problem.
