I have a few more ideas for France-related videos so I hope you’ll enjoy those too (and you’re right about the audience, lots of French people have been watching which I’m so pleased about - it’s been great chatting to everyone in the comments about France’s relationship with manga/anime, I’ve learned a lot from you guys).

    The intro of One Piece is inspired by the death of the pirate named Olivier Levasseur, nicknamed « La Buse ». Just before he was executed he literally throwed an incrypted written message to the crowd and said « my treasure to the one ho can find it »… the chase for the treasure is still on.

    • @ArchieTalksAnime
      @ArchieTalksAnime  2 месяца назад +9

      That’s so cool! What a badass way to go out. I’m reading about him now - his treasure was worth an estimated $1 billion in today’s money, that’s insane!

    Fun fact: Lolonois is not even a real name, it's just his place of birth: Les Sables-d'Olonne, along the coast of Vendée in France.
    His name was spelled in various documents as François l'Olonnais, l'Olonnais, l'Olonnois, Lolonois, or even Lolona.

    • @ArchieTalksAnime
      @ArchieTalksAnime  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah I spent a lot of time trying to decide which name to use in the video haha, there are so many variations! I decided on Lolonois because that’s the one that Oda knew him by, so that made the most sense for this video.

    The name of Trafalgar D. Water Law is a reference of the 2 famous Napoleon Bonaparte's battles (losted) of Trafalgar and Waterloo.

    • @ArchieTalksAnime
      @ArchieTalksAnime  2 месяца назад +1

      I never realised that! I mean the Trafalgar part is obvious but I didn’t notice the “water law” part being Waterloo, that’s pretty cool! Thanks for pointing that out!

      It’s crazy right?! As soon as I discovered this I wanted to make a full video about it, the guy was brutal! “Lolonois” is pronounced “Lolonoa” or “Roronoa” in Japanese, so Oda used it for Zoro, so cool! He also revealed in the same Q&A that Axe-Hand Morgan was named after the British pirate Henry Morgan.

      Jean Bart who joined Law on Sabaody is based on... Jean Bart, privateer in the north sea who originated from my hometown and is still celebrated to these days. His story is epic and could make a great video.

I wish the U.K. was more like this but we mainly got American stuff because of the language. As you know, there are tons of references to other pirates, if you have fun with it, I wouldn't mind the same format for each one of them! The relation between France and Spain was terrible at this time (I strongly suggest a viral video about an hilarious interaction between a French/ British crew, the game is sea of thieves, about this matter iirc) Have a nice day!

Of course they did terrible things but I love that pirates were setting up these island bases with different nationalities and governing themselves. I did enjoy making this one (I’m a bit of a history geek) so maybe I’ll do more videos like this down the line! Question : Do you know that there is what is called Franga (French manga) ?
    One of them was published in Japan, Radiant by Tony Valente. The japaneese anime studio "Studio Lerche" have made an anime on it for the japaneese chanel NHK.
    Do you know if something similar exists in other countries ? I'd be curious about that.

      Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I know there’s been a few American comics that have been adapted into anime, like Witchblade and Cannon Busters. A couple of people have mentioned Radiant in the comments on my other video about France/manga, I had never heard of it before. That’s so cool that the cultural influence now goes both ways, it’s like a full circle moment! The story of Radiant sounds very interesting, I will definitely check it out when I get the chance. Is the anime adaptation worth watching?
